Really great advice, couldn't agree more. I just order that trinity of lenses and now I have my eye on that 85mm. What I love about all the lenses you mention in the video is that they share the same 67mm filter size, so one set of filters works across the whole collection.
fantastic and I agree 100% about the filter size. I have a couple lenses that are a different size and it's really a pain to have to carry filters for just those lenses
Just got the last of the holy Tamron trinity this week. Started with the 28-75, quickly added the 17-28, and finally just added the 70-180. I've got a couple Sigmas (35mm and 50mm) if I really need to drop below f2.8, but 99% of the time the Tamrons are giving me what I need. After being a prime purist for so long I have no regrets about getting zooms.
I FINALLY jumped back into full frame and purchased the A7iv. I forgot how much I enjoyed watching your content. This is a great video and really will serve me well as I kit up. I'll absolutely be logging some more watch time with your stuff. Thanks Jake!
I took your advice and got the Tamron 17-70 for the Sony a6600, and was not disappointed. I’ll probably check back with this video if I pick up the a7iv later this year
Nice video, very fair recommendations. I rock the 85mm 1.8 and 24mm 1.4 GM and I couldn't be happier, covers like 99% of things that I shoot. To be honest I use the 85mm for street photography as well, not just portraits. And 24mm takes over for any kind of landscapes, well most of the time at least. It's always fun to mix them
I actually bought the A7iii with the Tamron 28-75, Sony 85 1.8 and Sony 35 1.8 in January and later got the 70-180 because I wanted to get closer and use the macro capabilities of that one. Now I still have the 17-28 on my wishlist and I'm unsure about what 50mm to get but the Zeiss 55 is probably the best choice. So you pretty much covered my own camera bag here 😅
I recommend the Samyang 35 1.4 ($300) and 85 1.4 ($400) used. Excellent optics at a value price. Viltrox 85 1.8 is also a great value. I have the Tamron Trinity and am very well satisfied.
Finally somebody other than myself that believes in Tamron. They make really good lenses that are very affordable the only lenses to stay away from in the Tamron lineup are the 2.8 prime lenses the 35mm definitely left something to be desired. If you are an event photographer you will definitely love the 28-200 the specs don't do it justice it is by far one of the best lenses in my lineup. At some point I'm getting the 17-28.
Ive the 17-28 & 70-180 and i love them. Such an great lightweight combo for the 7III. With my Sigma Art 50mm ive everything i need for Street Photography for. Great Lenses 👌
Man I was getting the 17-28, 28-75 and 70-180 but the 50 or 55 primes would be a good sub for that middle range. I shoot 40% of my photos at 70, 10% at 24 and 50% in between usually around 50..
I think you've nailed the question "best lens selection on a budget" for E-mount FF. I own the 3 Tamrons and they are superb lenses. And when you check the price you can't believe it's true. Of course, there's always one or two issues you would prefer like this or like that. But overall and considering the competition when you look to the ratio price-performance-quality no other lens selection beats this Tamron trio.
Great review! I initially purchased a Sony a6000 (aps-c) with two kit lenses. I got it home and was not feeling great about the purchase. Two days later I returned it and bought an a6400 with a Tamaron 17-70mm 2.8mm lens. I am so glad I did. This combo is incredible and covers such a wide range of focal lengths, it's all I needed for many months. I recently bought a Sony 70-350. I like it but don't love it. I was considering the Sigma 100-400 and am now wondering if I would have been happier with that. Lastly, I just bought a Samyang 12mm 1.8 and man, this takes wild & WIDE pics!
The Sony FE 24mm - 104mm F4 OSS G is a great general zoom lens, and reasonably priced at $1100. It has bit more range than the Tamron 28-75 but not quite as fast. With OSS it does very well in low light, but probably without the F2.8 probably won't generate as much bokeh blur at similar focal lengths. Another important aspect is weight, the G Masters are all metal w/ large apertures that end up weighing a ton. Even if they didn't cost more, they may not be worth it.
Super helpful! I got the tamron 17-28 when I bought Sony a7s iii. Great performance but did find the narrow zoom range limiting when shooting travel vlog. Might consider adding 28-200 after watching this video!
I haven't tried that lens but I would love to. I keep hoping Tamron is going to release something similar but up to now the 70-300 is as close as they have come.
For JPEGs and Video-only: the Sigma 16mm f1.4 is perfectly fine with x1.2 clear image zoom. Making it a 19mm f1.6 on a7III or any Sony Full Frame camera with clear image zoom. Best thing is it's only $300 used.
Thank you so much for your videos! They have been extremely helpful. I would really appreciate some input since some new lenses have come out and I have some slightly different uses than you. I am mostly into family, portraits, travel, landscape, and astrophotography. If you had the ability to choose two lenses for the above uses, what would you choose? I am open to suggestions as well. Thank you so much for the help again! Lens choice considerations: -Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM or 35mm F1.4 GM ($1300) -Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM ($2000) -Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 Di Ill RXD ($800) -Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di Ill VXD G2 ($900) -Tamron 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 Di Ill RXD ($650) -Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 Ill VXD ($1900)
Another option, esp with the A7R series (more megapixels), is to use 3 or 4 sharp/fast/cheap/lightweight primes (compared to the zooms), and then crop to zoom into the intermediary focal lengths. 16, 35, 85, and maybe a 100-400. Depending on the display device and the requirements of the audience, a photographer can crop a LOT and no one will know the difference.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Jake on this topic. Very practical advice from a pro targeting budget conscious A7 users, also testing them on a frigid location really help me make well informed decision for my A7iii lenses. 👍
I think it stacks up very well still. I hope sigma fixed the dust inside the lens issue they were having. Sigma still beats tamron ever so slightly on image quality but at a cost of size and weight
I have 24-105, I think it’s a great lens. I’m not sure why this lens most of the time is omitted by the youtubers. I’m planning to add 85mm 1.8 soon. Thank you for the informative video.
Great review Jake! Sami I agree 100% for the 24-105, however i used this as always on. in that case 105 ist not always sufficient. after many reviews , including this one I’ll go for the Tamron 28-200 for my upcoming Alaska trip. I hope it will be ok for shooting a whale .
Thank you for the great suggestions and as a person who at the edge of switching to Sony system, I think I will definitely starting with the trinity set and 85mm 1.8/f or 55mm 1.8/f. 28~200mm is tempting when doing outdoor events though.
Nice budget suggestions! And what about lens auto focus noise, are they silent, specially the tamrons. And for weddings you will still go with the 28-200 or the 75.
I would go with the 28-200 for weddings or the 17-28 and the 70-180 would be great as well. None of these lenses have any audible AF noise they are all practically silent
I think Tamron make great lenses. Weather sealing is very good and light weight for travel are a big benefit. The optics are excellent & I like the fact that you have a constant Aperture through the zoom range. Great value for money.
Love your videos. Very clear and beautifully made. I now own the 28-75 and am very happy with it. I also own an old 80-200mm that i use with an adapter. However Tamron just announced a 150-500 lens. Any plans on reviewing that when it comes out?
Hi Jake. Great video. Very informative and I like that you have tested them in harsh conditions. I do a lot of hiking to take photos and like that tamron lenses are lighter as this would mean less weight on my walks. I have been looking for ages to work out what to get on a budget for mostly landscape/astro and wildlife with a little portrait photography as well. I have been using the a6300 but I’m looking to get the a7rii. Would you still recommend using the tamron lenses with the higher megapixel a7r ii?
So glad I stumbled upon this channel! Love your videos. Binging the crap outta these, while waiting for my A7 IV to arrive. Switching to Sony from Canon, and I just wanna learn as much as I can. Thank you for these amazing, very informative videos!
I have been using the Sony 24-104 and Sony 70-200 f4 as my travel photography lenses. Am thinking of getting the tamron 28-200 as a one lens solution on my A74 and then have my 16-35 f2.8 GM on my A73 for special situations. Good review. Tamron seems to be coming up with great low cost quality options. So much more choice now than when I first got my A73 a few years back.
It wasn't released when I made this video but the Tamron 50-400 is absolutely fantastic. You can see my review of it here: th-cam.com/video/jBHfqSIUlDo/w-d-xo.html
@@MollyFitzBrown tbh, you will not see a difference (if anything the difference is minimal at best). You’re better off getting a lens that is more versatile and you’ll get more out of if
@@joshuareveles I really enjoyed having some zoom but I ended up keeping the 20mm after making a video using each of them. The 20mm is just so sharp and I loved the f1.8 :)
Thanks for this fantastic clear video about lens options. I have a question and I’m really curious for your opinion: with my sony A7siii I already have the sony 16-35mm GM and sigma 24-70mm. I am planning some weddings for this summer, and I think I will need some more reach at some moments. What do you think is best for my third lens?
Such a great video!! Massive information, really helpful for who is looking for a new lens! I think I have same mindset of you, I love nature and landscape, and astro is something important for my soul! I have the 24 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8. But still missing a tele lens! Tamrons seems to be a great option!
I just bought the A7III. I am a casual vacation/concert picture taker but truly enjoy taking good/great pictures. I love shooting the performers at concerts, landscapes, and flowers and tight shots. Would you still recommend the Tamron 17-28 and the Tamron 28-200? Any other lens? Thanks so much for this most helpful video and your advice on this!
One other question for you -- heading to the US Open next week and want to take a telephoto lens with me. Can't wait for Tamron's new lens. What would you recommend to get now in light of Tamron introducing a new lens? Thanks again!
Great video Jake! My tammi 17-28 stays on my a7s3 probably 90% as well - such a versatile lens! . Many of my videos right now are of my 3 little daughters, wife and myself. I also love my tammi 28-75 and 70-180. In fact, right now, since i sold my Sony APS-C gear, these are the only lenses i currently own for my a73 and a7s3 and I'm perfectly happy.
really learned a lot throughout this video ! quick question, what camera & camera lens are you using for recording yourself in the wilderness throughout this video ?
Hey Jake. Thank you so much for this great review! Do you have any experiences and can tell more about the difference of the Tamron RxD / VxD / VxD G2 models?
What would be your recommendation for landscape? Zion specifically, headed there soon. I can really get one lens. So curious for depth, etc. more photography than video. Thank you so much, fantastic video!
Great video as always Jake. I recently bought the 28-200mm after seeing your previous review about it. Which filter are you using on the 28-200 in this video? with the red ring?
I just bought the Sony A7III camera this year after getting my tax refund and getting a few extra dollars to it. I still have it brand-new in the box on used. I'm glad to see that you're happy with your Sony A7 camera and have lenses to go along with it. If you're donating or plan to donate a Sony lens from your Sony A7 camera, you're more than welcome to leave a comment on any of my TH-cam videos with your contact information so I can send you my address to mail me a donated lands. I appreciate you in advance for doing so and I promise to give a review of your Sony lens once I get it. I'm new to Sony cameras and don't know how to use it to film for you to, nor do I know proper camera settings. Thanks in advance. :-)
Jake your Videos are superb and very informative. Thanks for all. how about using APS-C lenses on these cameras for good work ? Would you suggest them in terms of saving some amount and getting very good quality with these cameras?
Thank you very much! If you have a full frame camera I would always get full frame lenses. If you have an APSC camera then tamron has released some really great lenses for APSC!
Great reviews and suggestions! 👍 I have the new A7 IV and two ZV-E10's. I am switching off of Canon DSLR's after years and have a number of "L" lenses that I'm now working on replacements for to use with my new Sony's. I am temporarily using both the Sony MC-11 and Metabones V Adapters for the Canon, s, but I'm looking to convert to E mount lenses only. Some of your suggestions have given me well-needed reviews, evaluations and ideas! I bought the Sigma 24-70 DG DN ART after a lot of back and forth with the Tammy, but I did buy the 17-28 Tammy. The 70-180 might be a good choice to replace my 70-200 f/2.8 L Canon. For large tele, I bought the Sigma 150-600 DG DN Sport (the new one), and for the ZV's, I have APS-C's incuding the Sig 16mm 1.4, Sony 20mm Pancake, and Sony 18-105 f/4.0. I was forced to buy the 16-50 kit lens with one of the ZV's due to only finding one E-10 body-only and then having to buy the kit for the other due to almost non-existent availability of the model. My takeaway from your video is a strong interest in a couple of lenses you reviewed, especially the Sony 24mm f/1.4 due to my needs for my live streaming studio setup as well as low-light photography. Additionally, you have seriously perked my interest in the Sony 85mm f/1.8, Tammy 70-180, and possibly even the inexpensive Tammy 28-200. Awesome reviews and discussion. Nailed my questions without even having been asked!! 😁👍 Cheers!
Jake, I noticed in the night shoot video you used the Tamron 17-28 at about the 20mm point. I see the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 is the same price as the Tamron 17-28. If I am using it primarily for wide shots is the Sony a better choice?
Great reviews and I just purchased the 28-200 based off one of your videos for my A7S. What would you recommend for surveillance/investigative type work for the dark of night. GMaster looks like what you would say, but I need something as I am at a distance. Cannot really do post editing to keep the integrity of the picture.
Thank you for so informative video. I have Sony a7iii. What lenses would you recommend for video interviews? I just read that 35mm f/1.4 and 70-100mm f/2.8, but now I'm confused which brand is better value for money. Or maybe even my selection is not correct? 🤔
Hi Jake, great video and great advice. I wonder, I have the peak design tripod and wonder what set up you have that seems to support the long lens tamron 70-180 since lens has no tripod ring?
Thanks Jake for such informative videos. Could you help with deciding which one lens for my purpose? I love to take family/event shots and am continually disappointed with these - they are usually in low light situations. I also love seascape/view photography and then the real close-up nature pics like petals, insects etc. Am I asking too much to try covering all these interests with one lens? 😜. I will be purchasing the Sony A7III in the coming days.
If you want to cover all that then you definitely want to look at the Tamron 28-200. It's a great all in one lens that will give you tons of options and great image quality.
Nice video, Tamrons Lenses were actually THE main reason to go with sony vs. canon...the overall system cost with 2.8 zooms is just so much lower and also the size and weight is so nice...Tamron is killing it. I only wish they made the manual focus linear for video on sony...but yeah, somethings gotte give i guess
@@EmilWall you are absolutely right and thanks for telling me. Havent yet decided to upgrade as ive learned how much i CAN actually trust Sonys af…i was a 100% manual only shooter before the Sony now its like 10%, and for that its not really a big deal (mostly for macro shots and stuff, tha sony focus pulls are better then what i could do)
A great everyday carry with the A7iii is the Sony FE 1224 f/4 G great from astro to sunsets/rises and Sony FE 24240 (360 APS-C mode) great to keep on the camera ready for a wide 24mm to birding at 360mm (center of sensor crop) fastest AF and 10 fPS in silent mode, did a great Solar eclipse wedding ring with rainbow colors, very sharp. Best long range zoom 200-600 with 2x teleconverter (no need for 1.4 T with aps-c) you get 1800mm in APS-C mode. 1800mm you get a full frame moon so clear and sharp as a NASA telescope and IS so good you can do hand holding.
Those lenses all sound great, I just haven't had the chance to use them personally yet, but after your comment I think I will try and get hold of a few of them to try! Cheers
Great video as always Jake! I love the 17-28, 28-75 and 70-180. Like you I shot with just the 28-75 for my first year with my A7III. Although I haven’t used used my 28-75 much sine picking up and he other two. Been rethinking my lens since I need to add a longer telephoto for the types of photography I’ve been doing of late. My struggle is I do both video and stills and travel a lot (in Puerto Rico currently) so I struggle to keep my kit small since I’ve added a mini2 drone as well. It keeps growing! Been considering the 70-300 in lieu of the fantastic 70-180, or perhaps getting into a 400+ mm. Need to watch more reviews.
I have the 70-300 and 17-28 both are great. Mainly i decide if i di video or photo close up i use the 17-28 and with aps-c i cover the 35mm up to 63 with clear zoom at f/2.8.. for wildlife, zoo, and portrait, and wildlife video i use the 70-300mm with can go up to 450mm with aps-c and up to 900mm with clearzoom. Having a 28-200 for time where changing the lens is difficult would be a good compromise.
What lens would you recommend for taking pictures of interior rooms like bathrooms and kitchens? Preferably on a budget. I'm a home renovation contractor and my camera is a Sony A6600. Yes please on the APSC video !
Thank you for an excellent informative video. I will wait until Sony A7 IV is in the store to try it prior to make a purchase. Is there any way to have an external GPS connect to Sony A7 IV? I used to have a Canon 6D with built in GPS. I used it while I visited Japan and helped me to remembered where I was. My cell phone has no signal in certain location but the GPS has signal. It is important to me as I’m getting older and can’t remember. Also, will you do a comparison between Sony A7 IV and Canon R6 in the future? Thanks.
Hey partner great video!. I purchased that Sony 85MM lens. It was exactly what I was looking for in a portrait/narrative DOF. I’m new to macro extension game and had a question. Are the macro extensions specific to the lens or just the mount?
@@JakeSloan I've been a Canon guy my whole life, shooting with every x series pro camcorders but I'm getting away from commercial broadcast shoots and do more indy narratives and I think that using the macro extension is going to help me out shooting a film that takes place entirely in a car. Excellent explanation. Very useful. Thank you for this video. Would like to know the capabilities of Sony a7iii for portrait photography, that would be lot more helpful. Also shed some light about the portrait lenses.
I loved this video, I had been looking for something like this recently. My budget was about the price of the 18-105 but felt in love with the 28-200 wow, it seems pretty much all in one haha anyway, you still recommend the 18-105 or definitely better safe more money and get the 28-200? thanks!

@@Rohitkrvlogs i think it really comes down to what more valuable for you: portability or getting the extra versatility of the wider angle. But I would say that id you want portability, go for the new Sigma 28-70mm
Why tamron? What’s the difference between tamron and Sony? Wouldn’t it be better to go with a Sony? Excuse my lack of knowledge, I’m new to photography
They would be just a bit more stable but enormously more heavier and expensive. Will not happen. This is one of their strength, good quality solid plastic, weather resistant and very lightweight, with good sharpness and optics quality at good prices.

Totally agree!
I have the Sony 20mm f1.8 G lens and Tamron 28-200. Great combination!
Excellent!!! I keep hoping sony will release a 16mm GM or G lens otherwise I would jump on the 20mm G for sure
Even if they didn't cost more, they may not be worth it.
agreed! I finally got the chance to use one and its a great all around lens
Super helpful! I got the tamron 17-28 when I bought Sony a7s iii. Great performance but did find the narrow zoom range limiting when shooting travel vlog. Might consider adding 28-200 after watching this video!
Fantastic it makes a great option with the 17-28 you have a whole zoom range covered in 2 lenses
The 17-28 looks very nice. I’d love to hear from the lenses you did rent and your experience also the reason why you opted to do so. 👍🏽
I rent the 12-24 from time to time but that is about it. Everything else I need I can get with my lenses
Your reviews made me go with the Tamron 17-28 and 28-200 combo even before this video :) I love your channel. Keep it up!
Fantastic thanks a lot!!
Absolutely agree the 85/1.8 is underrated and my absolute favorite.
Absolutely!
My favourite e mount lens is the sigma 100-400. It's amazing how versatile this range is, in more or less the same package as the 70-200f4 from sony
I haven't tried that lens but I would love to. I keep hoping Tamron is going to release something similar but up to now the 70-300 is as close as they have come.
They announced a 150-500mm! Should come out in June I guess
Does it crop the image on a Sony a7iii? I've seen reviews that due to it being a full frame it turns the edges the black the farther you zoom in?
I’m glad I found the channel it’s always great getting advice from locals.
Thanks!
Thanks Jake ! that Tamron 28-200 is looking enticing.
It's an excellent all in one lens
For JPEGs and Video-only:
the Sigma 16mm f1.4 is perfectly fine with x1.2 clear image zoom.
Making it a 19mm f1.6 on a7III or any Sony Full Frame camera with clear image zoom.
Best thing is it's only $300 used.
very true I used the 16mm sigma for a few years and it's a great lens
Thank you so much for your videos! They have been extremely helpful. I would really appreciate some input since some new lenses have come out and I have some slightly different uses than you. I am mostly into family, portraits, travel, landscape, and astrophotography. If you had the ability to choose two lenses for the above uses, what would you choose? I am open to suggestions as well. Thank you so much for the help again!
Lens choice considerations:
-Sony FE 24mm F1.4 GM or 35mm F1.4 GM ($1300)
-Sony FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM ($2000)
-Tamron 17-28mm F2.8 Di Ill RXD ($800)
-Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di Ill VXD G2 ($900)
-Tamron 28-200mm F2.8-5.6 Di Ill RXD ($650)
-Tamron 35-150mm F2-2.8 Ill VXD ($1900)
For what you want to do I would get the 24mm gm (great for landscapes and astro) and the Tamron 35-150 (great for portraits travel and lots more)
@@JakeSloan thank you so much! Really appreciate your videos and the quick response!
Just got an a7C and this video is so helpful! Thank youuuuu
Awesome!
Agreed!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Jake on this topic. Very practical advice from a pro targeting budget conscious A7 users, also testing them on a frigid location really help me make well informed decision for my A7iii lenses. 👍
Thanks and I am so glad to hear my videos helped you out
Coming back to this video after a couple months, how do you think the Tamron stacks up to the sigma 24-70?
I think it stacks up very well still. I hope sigma fixed the dust inside the lens issue they were having. Sigma still beats tamron ever so slightly on image quality but at a cost of size and weight
I have 24-105, I think it’s a great lens. I’m not sure why this lens most of the time is omitted by the youtubers.
I’m planning to add 85mm 1.8 soon.
Thank you for the informative video.
Fantastic
Great review Jake!
Sami I agree 100% for the 24-105, however i used this as always on. in that case 105 ist not always sufficient. after many reviews , including this one I’ll go for the Tamron 28-200 for my upcoming Alaska trip. I hope it will be ok for shooting a whale .
Thank you for the great suggestions and as a person who at the edge of switching to Sony system, I think I will definitely starting with the trinity set and 85mm 1.8/f or 55mm 1.8/f. 28~200mm is tempting when doing outdoor events though.
You're welcome!
Great value for money.
agreed!
Love your videos. Very clear and beautifully made. I now own the 28-75 and am very happy with it. I also own an old 80-200mm that i use with an adapter. However Tamron just announced a 150-500 lens. Any plans on reviewing that when it comes out?
Absolutely! I cannot wait to test that lens out
Can u pl let me know which is better sony 200 600 vs tamron 150 500mm
Yes I’ve used mine on the a1 the a7riii and the a7riv and they’ve worked really well.
So glad I stumbled upon this channel! Love your videos. Binging the crap outta these, while waiting for my A7 IV to arrive. Switching to Sony from Canon, and I just wanna learn as much as I can. Thank you for these amazing, very informative videos!
Wow thank you very much!!
I have the Tamron 17-28 and 70-300 for wildlife. Both very good lenses.
Nice!!
Aaaay!! I was waiting for this video, thank you!
YAY!!! I am glad someone was lol
They are and there are some very exciting new lenses coming from them in the next few months too!
@@JakeSloan sounds like a good topic for a video, hopefully before I put down my cash for the 28-200.
Fantastic budget conscious advice. Cheers for the great round up!
Thank you!
Love your authenticity. Any lens recommendations for Sports Photography?
It wasn't released when I made this video but the Tamron 50-400 is absolutely fantastic. You can see my review of it here: th-cam.com/video/jBHfqSIUlDo/w-d-xo.html
I got the Sony a7c with kit lens and looking for lest vlogging lens, can't decide between Tameron 17-28 and Sony 20mm, any thoughts?
Awesome, I would get the Tamron 17-28 as it gives you more versatility for vlogging.
@@JakeSloan that’s what I was thinking but the quality from the 20mm looks so amazing, do you think there’s any quality loss going with the tamron?
@@MollyFitzBrown tbh, you will not see a difference (if anything the difference is minimal at best). You’re better off getting a lens that is more versatile and you’ll get more out of if
@@joshuareveles I really enjoyed having some zoom but I ended up keeping the 20mm after making a video using each of them. The 20mm is just so sharp and I loved the f1.8 :)
Great video Jake! I've watched a lot of lens videos recently and yours was the most helpful.
Thank you very much
Thanks, Jake. I just love your videos and really appreciate the time and energy you put into them. Have a nice day!
Thanks, you too!
You are to blame for me owning two of these so far 😂
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA awesome!!
😆
Which lens can you recommend for a vlogger? I'm in a state of transition from the Gh5 to the Sony A7SIII. Great info! thnks!
17-28 for sure!!
Tnks! Much appreciated 🤓👍
I would definitely look into the 70-200 range or if you need a bit more reach and to save a bit of cash the 70-300
Such a great video!! Massive information, really helpful for who is looking for a new lens! I think I have same mindset of you, I love nature and landscape, and astro is something important for my soul! I have the 24 1.4 and the 85mm 1.8. But still missing a tele lens! Tamrons seems to be a great option!
thanks and definitely worth a look
Great value advice based on the real experience in the field. May I ask you recommendation for the tripod and head ball for travelling or hiking?
I use the peak design travel tripod for pretty much all my adventures now. Simply fantastic for light weight travel.
I would but I also would tell you to wait just a bit. Tamron just announced 2 new lenses that might be better for you
@@JakeSloan Thanks Jake!!
NICE!
really learned a lot throughout this video ! quick question, what camera & camera lens are you using for recording yourself in the wilderness throughout this video ?
Most of the shots were the camera and lens combination I was talking about at the time
Hey Jake. Thank you so much for this great review! Do you have any experiences and can tell more about the difference of the Tamron RxD / VxD / VxD G2 models?
most the g2 models are slightly smaller or lighter and they added the USB-c port for firmware updates etc optically the improvements are quite small.
What would be your recommendation for landscape? Zion specifically, headed there soon. I can really get one lens. So curious for depth, etc. more photography than video. Thank you so much, fantastic video!
I would highly recommend the Tamron 17-28 for landscape!
@@JakeSloan thank you so much!
Hi Jake. Very informative and has given me a few ideas. Great video. Cheers, Dave.
Thanks!
Great video as always Jake. I recently bought the 28-200mm after seeing your previous review about it.
Which filter are you using on the 28-200 in this video? with the red ring?
That’s from freewell gear and it’s a 2-5 stop variable nD
Hi. Great video. What lenses do you recomend to shoot food and also use for video?
I would use prime lenses for food. The 85mm would be great certainly the 135 and maybe a 35mm?
This was the video I was looking for. Thanks for the tips. New subscriber
Thank you so much
That low light stuff was pretty impressive.
Thanks
Great video thanks. What are your thoughts on the tamron 35-150?
It's unbelievably good! I just wouldn't put it in the "budget" category check out my review of it here: th-cam.com/video/cqtLxiOSln0/w-d-xo.html
congrats on getting a great camera!
@@JakeSloan Great thanks again Jake. I have full frame camera only. Best Wishes with you always.
*Thanks, great informative review 👍 ✨ ✨ ✨*
*What lens did you use for this video studio shooting parts?*
I think the 24mm GM

😁👍 Cheers!
Thanks a lot!! I just released a review of the 24mm too so if you want to see it and examples from it be sure and check it out
Great video as always! Thank you Jake. What would be you recommendation for mountain bike videos ? Thanks in advance
Wow well really I’d look at getting a 17-28 for wide stuff. But you would really want a small action camera like the insta360 one x2
Jake, I noticed in the night shoot video you used the Tamron 17-28 at about the 20mm point. I see the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 is the same price as the Tamron 17-28. If I am using it primarily for wide shots is the Sony a better choice?
That would be a sharper lens and perform better in low light for sure!
Excellent video and great comparisons & footage . Subbed !
Thanks for the sub!
Great reviews and I just purchased the 28-200 based off one of your videos for my A7S.
What would you recommend for surveillance/investigative type work for the dark of night. GMaster looks like what you would say, but I need something as I am at a distance. Cannot really do post editing to keep the integrity of the picture.
for something like that I would look at the 135GM 1.8 or the 70-200GM for the low light
Thank you for so informative video. I have Sony a7iii. What lenses would you recommend for video interviews? I just read that 35mm f/1.4 and 70-100mm f/2.8, but now I'm confused which brand is better value for money. Or maybe even my selection is not correct? 🤔
For interviews the 35 is excellent and either an 85 1.8 or the 70-180 would be great as well.
Awesome vid.. thank you for helping guide me in the right direction!
You’re welcome
This is exactly the type of video I was looking for, thanks so much, Jake! 🙂
Thanks Danielle
Hi Jake, great video and great advice. I wonder, I have the peak design tripod and wonder what set up you have that seems to support the long lens tamron 70-180 since lens has no tripod ring?
I’ve used that combo a lot without any issue even fully extended on the tripod head and lens
I only wish they made the manual focus linear for video on sony...but yeah, somethings gotte give i guess
yeah but they are killing the lenses lately, absolutely fantastic performance for the price
@@JakeSloan lets start a petition to sony/tamron to get a linear manual focus option then! I love their glass :)
On the new G2 version of the 28-75 you can change into linear focus really easy by using the tamron lens utility software.
@@EmilWall you are absolutely right and thanks for telling me. Havent yet decided to upgrade as ive learned how much i CAN actually trust Sonys af…i was a 100% manual only shooter before the Sony now its like 10%, and for that its not really a big deal (mostly for macro shots and stuff, tha sony focus pulls are better then what i could do)
Why I sold my Nikon, Z lenses were to expensive, and sony has all the 3rd party lenses
Cheers
I have a tamron 28-75 and a sony 85mm 1.8 A great combination for all occasions
agreed
thank you for the extension tubes!!!!
wanted to take micro shots and portraits in my camera
you're welcome!
Nice!!
I would get the Laowa 9mm for that! it's excellent for wide angle shots of interiors
Thanks.
Not that I am aware of unfortunately
I have the 85mm. I absolutely love it, my all time favorite..
Nice
Hey partner great video!. I purchased that Sony 85MM lens. It was exactly what I was looking for in a portrait/narrative DOF. I’m new to macro extension game and had a question. Are the macro extensions specific to the lens or just the mount?
Just the mount. They will work with any emount lens. I can’t speak to what you will get out of other lenses though lol
@@JakeSloan I've been a Canon guy my whole life, shooting with every x series pro camcorders but I'm getting away from commercial broadcast shoots and do more indy narratives and I think that using the macro extension is going to help me out shooting a film that takes place entirely in a car. Thanks
@@JakeSloanI also subscribed. Let me know if you ever need music for your shots in a composer as well.
Awesome video! Do you record in 4k or 1080p? I hear Sony’s 1080 isn’t good. Is that true?
I record everything in 4k, the 1080 on sony is fine but certainly not the highest quality
Enjoying my Tamron 70-300 on the A7 III
Nice! Thats a great lens
I have it too with my A7c and the 17-28. Very good lenses.
First!! I am one of those people!!
YOU ARE!!!
Excellent explanation. Very useful. Thank you for this video. Would like to know the capabilities of Sony a7iii for portrait photography, that would be lot more helpful. Also shed some light about the portrait lenses.
Thank you! the A7III is great for portrait work and the lenses of choice would be 85mm or 55mm Zeiss
What are your thoughts on the best camera lens for top down desktop product reviews ? 😝
I would look at a prime like the 35mm gm or 20mm g depending on how much ceiling space you have lol. The 17-28 would also work really well
@@JakeSloan thank you so much for the response. Can’t tell ya how helpful it is!
Which Sony camera were you using? Is the Tamron 18-400 for the A7's the best for amateurs?
this was the A7sIII. Tamron doesnt make the 18-400 for sony e mount (yet) but I highly recommend the 28-200 as a great all in one lens
I loved this video, I had been looking for something like this recently.
My budget was about the price of the 18-105 but felt in love with the 28-200 wow, it seems pretty much all in one haha
anyway, you still recommend the 18-105 or definitely better safe more money and get the 28-200?
thanks!
if you shoot APSC the 18-105 is good (or the new tamron 18-300) but if you shoot full frame get the 28-200
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 makes a lot of sense as a first lens. Those extra 4mm compared to the Tamron are a big deal.
I've heard great things about the optics of that lens but way too many people have reported dust problems with it so far
@@JakeSloan I have this lens. I have no dust issues. I think Sigma has fixed this issue (purchased recently)
Kindly let me know which lens is best like tamron 28-75mm 2.8 or Sigma 24-70mm 2.8, I have ronin sc gimbal and personally I would like to go with Sigma, please suggest as this would be my first lens for a7iii
@@Rohitkrvlogs i think it really comes down to what more valuable for you: portability or getting the extra versatility of the wider angle. But I would say that id you want portability, go for the new Sigma 28-70mm
@@AM-wi6gw how’s it holding up for you so far today?
Why tamron? What’s the difference between tamron and Sony? Wouldn’t it be better to go with a Sony? Excuse my lack of knowledge, I’m new to photography
Usually the tamron lenses are a fair bit cheaper than the Sony equivalent but the performance is the same in most cases
I would like to see how well the sony 20mm f 1.8 lens holds up in low light compared to the 24 f 1.4.
it holds up very well actually. the 20mm is a fantastic lowlight and astro photography lens
Thanks for the effort and the sharing. I wished those recommended Tamrons has some form of stabilization/ISIS. Thumbs up.
that would make them absolutely amazing
They would be just a bit more stable but enormously more heavier and expensive. Will not happen. This is one of their strength, good quality solid plastic, weather resistant and very lightweight, with good sharpness and optics quality at good prices.
I own 28-75 with sony 85 but for two lenses i'll recommend 35-150 and 17-28 as the second lens.
agreed!
Which lens would you recommend for street photography? Thanks in advance.
Honestly if you have the budget for it the new Tamron 35-150 is amazing. A less expensive option that also works well is the Sony 24-105
