    These cameras are pretty amazing in that you can customise them in so many different ways, so by all means this is in no way the only way to set your camera up, it’s just the way I like it and the way I have set it up after lots of shoots.
    It gives me access to everything I need and I’ve got all these settings memorised, mainly through repetition of use.
    I mainly shoot in either aperture priority or manual mode.
    When things are happening or changing quickly in front of me, I need to be quick in getting my settings. Aperture priority is a little like a semi automatic mode and when used in conjunction with the exposure compensation dial, I can very quickly get the settings I want. Click here for aperture priority.
    When things are more controlled, I switch to manual mode. This gives me total control over everything I want. Say for instance landscape shooting, I have time to change the settings as the conditions change. On portrait shoots, I control the lights and move the subject to where I want….so a nice controlled environment.

    Thanks Mike, nicely paced. I watched this just for fun without my camera in hand but will go back at some point and see if I can refine any of my settings. I like the way you explained your reasoning behind some of your decisions and how you emphasized that this how you set up your camera and how others may have different priorities. Also cheers for allowing me not to stress out too much to find things to put into the "My Settings" tab!

    I watched one video of this guy, and I got hooked on his voice. Super soft voice, he explains why he uses settings instead "use this because I'm a pro and you're not" like other youtubers. You're videos are very in depth and I love it.

      Thanks so much for your kind words. Nothing better than to explain why I do things a certain way...it does surprise me when others don't do this on youtube and even in paid tutorials.

      @@mikesphotography That is what was super helpful for me. This is my first camera ever, and I am just getting into the art form, so this video was really helpful in not just setting it up, but getting an explanation as to what each thing meant. Mike, like many of the other commenters on here, I've had my a7iii for a few months without properly diving into all the settings. As an Apple addict, I find Sony's menu system quite intimidating and unintuitive, almost like going back to DOS! In any case, having stumbled upon your video series, I now wish I could wind back the clock to just before I took it with me to the Kruger... Fantastic content, super clear, amazingly helpful - I feel like I'm now able to make the most of this sensational camera. Thanks a mill, and please keep it up.

    Literally just found this great tutorial, this camera is so customisable its easy to miss things that are in other menus, like you I shoot mainly in continous Hi shooting mode but I wanted bulb for fireworks shooting, but after a few days and conversations with Sony (who try to be very helpful) with no joy I finally found it in single shot mode bulb at the bottom of the shutter speeds. So we all learn some thing every day especially with this camera. Thanks very much for the video Mike and I will return. Gordon

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries Gordon.
      You’re right, there are so many hidden functions in this camera and it takes a little time to find and remember everything.
      I did a super quick video on bulb mode recently, check it out when you get a chance:

Very informative, in-depth and yet straight to the point. I usually can't stand long TH-cam videos but I watched yours in its entirety without even realizing it was close to 30 minutes long. I just recently upgraded from an a6000 to an a6600 (at $998.00) and this was very helpful in reviewing settings. Most tutorials are video-centric created _by_ content creators _for_ content creators. I really wanted photo settings for landscapes, architecture and street genres. I'm looking forward to exploring custom settings and trying back button focusing. Every one of your videos is a condensed master class - thanks Mike!
    edit: Would you consider a very short video pointing out how you set your custom keys for your a6600, and link it to this one?

    I know I'm late to the party, I've only just purchased my A7iii. But coming from (an old) Canon 550D, this video was super helpful. I couldn't for the life of me figure out where the focus zoom function was. I now have it set to custom C3 button (for macro) Thank you.

    Another good tuitional video. I shoot wildlife almost exclusively and have my A7III (and A7II) set to manual with auto ISO. I generally shoot stationary mamals/birds at f5.6/f8 but it's easy enough to change the aperture. I will also set out with a shutter speed of at least 1/250th, but with good light I will use 1/500th as a baseline. I tend to use the two presets on the top function dial for birds/insects in flight. I have one set up for 1/2500th, f8, lock on AF wide, and the other preset is set at 1/1600th for overcast skies in order to keep ISO as low as possible. I also preset exposure compensation and adjust it as necessary. Using the presets means fewer missed shots.

      Thanks Pete and that’s great to hear How you set your camera up differently.
      I was at an event yesterday with lots of photographers and it was really interesting to hear how others set up their cameras. I actually learned a thing or two that I’m trying out at the moment, so I might make an updated version of this video in six months time if my setup varies enough.
      What lenses do you predominantly use for wildlife?

      @@mikesphotography. I have a Sony 100 - 400mm G Master on my A7III (I will purchase a Sony 1.4 TC in the new year) and a Sony 90mm macro on my A7II. I find that I do not require anything else. My previous system comprised a Nikon D500 and Olympus EM1 mark II, a Nikkor 200 - 500mm, Nikkor 300mm PF ED VR + Nikkor TC14EIII, Sigma 180mm macro, Olympus 300mm + Oly 1.4TC and an Oly 12 - 100mm. It was a fabulous system but became cripplingly heavy after 17 months of walking about 7 hours a day, 5 days a week.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! Your older system sounded amazing but also amazingly heavy!! Can you get everything you need with the new lighter package!?
      I had a play with the 100-400gm at the weekend and it’s a really nice lens. Amazing light for what it does!

    • @klackon1
      @klackon1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikesphotography.It works for me, Mike. The full format allows for reasonable cropping and the addition of the 1.4TC will cater for longer range subjects. The fact that there is no crop factor makes the 100 - 400mm quite versatile for subjects which are reasonably close. The 90mm macro is superb and so much lighter than the Sigma 180mm, so I can now take handheld shots. It would be brilliant to be able to afford the Sony 400mm f2.8, but it's out of my price range and is also rather heavy to lugg about for 7 hours.

      The memory modes are really handy if you shoot the same sorts of things on different days. Saves a lot of time setting your camera up at the start of a shoot.

      If you’re not sure to premier pro, I’d say go with resolve as you won’t be hooked in to the subscription model.

    Hi Mike.. This is the first time I've seen your tutorials.. Two weeks ago I bought the Sony A/7/3 after using the A6000 and the A/7/2 For 3 years.. To be very honest and screaming for help,,, I'm bloody lost Mate.. Very well explained and it's interesting to know how a professional does the settings on his camera. I just bought this camera and it seems to have much more in details and quality comparing to Sony Alpha 77M2. But, its also have some features less. Would have been nicer for beginners to have some explanations on some details you say you do not use. As you said, it is about how you use it, yet I think with just a little more, it would have been even better, Over all I liked a lot! Thank you for the great job.

    Great tutorial Mike....I noticed you AF Track Sens you have set to 5. I have mine set to 2 so that it has better lock-on power to the object of interest. Is there alternative thinking for setting to 5? Also, you mention that half a shutter press will LOCK exposure when AEL w/shutter is on. I presume that it re-reads the exposure or does it just lock it to what exposure you have adjusted too? And does it release and relock the exposure when the shutter is pressed a second time? Cheers

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Craig!
      When tracking things the af track sens is much better in the lower numbers, this is more for general shooting.
      I’m going to make some videos on setting in more specific environments like sports, portraits etc in the new year...but I definitely agree with you in having lower numbers when tracking subjects.
      I really like locking my exposure so I get a consistent exposure in a sequence so that’s why I have exposure lock on shutter. There’s been the odd occasion where it’s not helped but most of the time it works for me. It keeps the exposure locked until you release the button completely.
      I hope that’s answered your questions. 👍

      What type of things will you be shooting? The tamron lenses are great the 28-75mm is a good walk about lens and the 17-28mm is a really good wide angle lens.
      Or if you just want one lens, the new sigma 24-70mm f2.8 is one I really want to get and looks like a solid lens.
      ... And if you're on a budget, the kit lens (28-70mm) produces some great images for what it is. 👍

Can't you change the "brackett" color to "Red"? Hi Mike - Great video, i am new a73 user and your video not only helped me in understanding how to setup but also helped me in understanding the various options and their meaning and usage. However i still have a few questions.
    - why to keep aspect ratio 3:2 but not 16:9?
    - why you kept dro off but not auto?
    - in what conditions you would turn ibis off? And why?
    - in what conditions you would use mf but not af and why?
    - in what conditions you would turn zebra off and why?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3:2 uses all of the sensor and 16:9 crops it, so you have a drop in megapixels.
      I’ve never had dro on...I think it only affects jpegs.
      I generally turn ibis off when shooting from a tripod.
      Manual focus is good for when you set your focus point and then it doesn’t change. Autofocus when tracking subjects or when they move a lot, or when shooting events when I move around a lot.
      I generally keep zebras on all the time.

      It had a green dotted line in the videos/photos when taking them, they replaced the Mecha device on it, which I have no idea what that is.

    When I first got into the menu of my a7III, I felt like someone shoved me into the cockpit of a plane and told me to land it. After this video I feel much more familiar with the camera. Thank you!

      Haha! That's a great analogy!! There is so much to these menus isn't there, it's basically like a little computer in there with minimal buttons and dials...

    your the man. thanks for this video. I am unskilled when it comes to taking photos but My sister in law needed me to take photos for an event and I literally watched this 1 hour before said event to figure out camera config. the shots look pretty decent. I didnt make any money otherwise I would have venmo'd you a bit. hope life is good. cheers mate

      Great to hear it all worked out though. Once you understand how the camera works it is great to be able to get some decent shots of events for the family ... I always get the "can you just bring your camera" line when it comes to family get togethers ... it is a lot of fun though!!
      All good here dude! Thanks for watching 😁👍

    Hi Mike: Is there any functionality within a Sony A7iii that would display where the focus point was on an image when viewing through image play-back? On my wife's Olympus M1 Mark iii a green square appears on the playback to show exactly where the focus point was engaged. Also Nikon has this in their Nikon View NX software. Any ideas? Thanks, Keith

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Keith. I'm not sure if there is. I haven't found it in any of the menus. I used to have this on the canon cameras and it was a great help.

    Great tutorial!
    Question: what’s the difference between compressed and uncompressed? Does it impact the quality of your Raw file? Curious about it. Thank you.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Itai! There actually isn’t that much of a difference in image quality in day to day shooting....I have noticed a small difference in my astrophotography shots but I really had to pixel peep to find any.
      There have been times where I’ve changed the setting and forgotten to change it back and the only thing that alerted me to it was the huge file sizes.
      I hope that helps.

    When shooting JPEG do you recommend in camera iso noise reduction and if so at what level?

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Charlie,
      I haven’t shot jpeg for years so I don’t have much experience with this.
      I think you’d only need to use it when shooting really high iso levels as the camera produces really clean images.

    Hello Mike! I always love your video. I have an idea for a video you might want to do? I’m have a shoot to do for a church group photo. I need to get into focus about 300 people. I don’t think the eye focus would work? Lol! I’ve been practicing how to get everybody in sharp focus. Your help would be great. Also this will be shot outside high noon sun behind me and facing the members. Thanks!

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Ralph!
      Ah, that sounds like a challenging shoot...Is it flexible in which way they will be facing? If so I'd really push for a different position or time of day.
      Sun in the faces of your subjects is always tricky as they will tend to feel uncomfortable looking towards the sun and some will start to squint...If you can change that, I'd get them all in a position to use the sun as a hair light, hire some big lights if at all possible and flash at full power to overpower the sun. Or if you cant get any lights or change the location, maybe change the time to get a more preferable angle of light?
      As for getting them in focus, close the aperture down...I'd be shooting that at f8 at the widest...
