  • A whimsical abstract alcohol ink painting...using markers to lay my ink down. I really love how much control they give me, especially in a medium like ink where the word control is not often used. They really have a mind of their own! Since I don’t talk over my videos here are some details about what I used....Artist Loft Alcohol Ink markers, Creatology plastic poster paper, 99% isopropyl alcohol in a needle nose container (small gives best control), Piñata Brass applied with my cheapy palette knife...sometimes even a drop from bottle is TOO much! Used an old C-pap machine for air, lol. For small dots I used tiny disposable dental/eyelash tool w/alcohol. For splatter dots, I scribbled in a condiment cup w/marker and added alcohol to make ink and just tapped a paintbrush full of it for some randomness while keeping the main area covered. I went back in after the video ended and added some larger dots too. I think that covers everything??!? Feel free to ask any questions!

Love this! How creative to use an old c-pap machine for air. That gave me an idea.

Your work is so beautiful! Is there a big difference between 91% alcohol and 99% alcohol?

    Hello Lisa
Thank you for sharing. I’m new to TH-cam and to this beautiful world of alcohol ink after seeing some work for sale at a spring fair here last year. I’m about to retire from work and was looking for something creative and fell in love but I’m finding it difficult to find a teacher, so I thought I’d look at TH-cam to gain knowledge, skills I hope will come. 😀
I read your notes in the dropdown at the top but would like to ask some questions if you don’t mind.
The (what looks like) gold and silver on this and one of your other videos and applied with the pointy spatula, is that ink and what is the actual technique for getting it on the spatula then onto the paper?
Are the markers you use the same as Copic markers?
Lastly does the air blowing have to be hot, warm or can it be cold? Is it about both drying quickly and movement of the ink?
Again thank you for your inspiration.

Wonderful job again Lisa! It’s amazing how nice results you get with the markers, I don’t think i could do it this way. You’re so lucky you can use that hose from the c-pap machine. I just will try a small dryer (more like a brush curling iron that blows air) for the wispy technique but i would like eventually an airbrush. I watched the other day a video where the artist recommends 3 different type of air brushes, but cant remember the video. Are you familiar with air brushes? Some are complicated and noisy but not all. Again beautiful painting, maybe it’s easier to do the wispy method with makers,I don’t know

Judith F I use anything that blows air...seriously! I have a Masters TC-20 airbrush (Amazon) that I really like but can’t say I’ve ever tried another brand. I use that for petals mostly. My work table has two blow dryer’s, heat gun, camera bulb cleaner, straws...and a cpap. The one thing I don’t like is canned air. I should probably give it another try, lol

Lisa Jordan Thank you! Do you use the heatgun on Yupo? Or actually there is this new opaque craft plastic by Grafix that doesnt warp if you use heat. Have you tried it? Can I ask how long have you been doing alcohol ink that you’re so good at it? I’m just starting,i suppose there is a learning curve.it looks easy, but I’m sure it’s not ..I’m a member at wispy AI on facebook,i follow you there too.I’m a friend of Lorries. Again, very nice work,if i learn half as nice i will be pleased 😀

Judith F I’ve been playing with inks since last Fall. They are easy...there’s really no right and wrong. Alcohol can make anything you don’t like go away!! I haven’t tried the Grafix yet but have tried the heat gun on this and it does buckle a bit but then relaxes after it cools. I wouldn’t use it as a rule, maybe if I was trying to dry something quickly. The Ampersand smooth artist panels from Micheal’s (hmmm..or A.C. Moore) are good for the heat gun though. (I was just watching Lorries video and was commenting when it closed on me and took me to another video and lost my comment, arrgghhh!

Lisa Jordan oh,sorry that happens....you meant you tried the heatgun on Yupo and it buckled, but then when it cooled off it relaxed? Lorrie said the same about the Grafix, but It takes a lot more heat than Yupo before even starts to curl a little. She really likes it,but I saw a demonstration by Myriam where she compares the 2 against each other and the Grafix does a lot batter. Plus if you directly drop the ink on it,it wont leave a stain. Grafix has another paper on Amazon that’s really nice, called Dur-a-lar, comes both in opaque (and you can use both sides) and a translucent one. Using a hair dryer on low heat,it won’t hurt the papers especially the new Grafix.its also a lot cheaper than Yupo

Any idea if the graffix is acid free?
