    Hi Robin. Of all your films this is my favourite,. You would be surprised just how many times I've watched it. Although an extreme it does perfectly illustrate that parts of the Broads have to be respected and is great to show to newcomers. Although I did have a friend who after seeing it refused to go anywhere near Gt. Yarmouth in a boat!

    Done this many times. I know it's not right, and should wait for the tide. But I love it.

    Been there and got the T-Shirt . Was glad I had boating experience though as the tidal flow was awesome and had to concentrate fully .

    Excellent video. My brother and I have done this on a yacht without an engine, obviously only possible with the tide. We towed the 28ft boat using the rowing dinghy against the tide so if moving at say 1 knt through the water when the tide was running at 3 knts our speed over the ground would be 2 knts stern first. This causes a good deal of confusion and I can well imagine seeing us emerge stern first through a bridge must have been a novel and unwelcome sight for a cruiser. Our method mimics the way it used to be done by putting a mud weight over the bow and letting it drag along the bottom of the river. Before the Breydon bridge was built, with a decent breeze, ideally from the North one could take the ebb down the Bure and make good progress against the tide up the Yare

      ***** It is an unforgiving part of the river when the tide is running fast. If you can give me an e-mail address I can send you scans about the area before the old suspension bridge was removed, there was a fatal accident there shortly after the war. It always amuses me when people assume The Broads are all easy to navigate all the time simon.neary1@goglemail.com

    Used to go on the Broads for years. One time we were going in same direction as this film. Ebb tide just before slack water. 2 large wooden boats filled with School Children were coming down on the ebb towards Braden Water out of control. Not a way to teach children! If I hadn't had the experience to avoid them, they would have hit us. Reversed just in time then quick forward full thrust.

      Raymond Sedgwick Yes I would be very unhappy about going with the tide when like this, at least going against it you have control.

    I was wondering just how far ahead of low water that you made this journey? The water seems very low but the flow is (obviously) really quick

    if your thinking about hiring a boat ?? beware,, try controlling your car on an ice rink** you'll get some idea ?? but the tide factor is frightening,,NOT EASY

    Always hire a yacht, so wonder if a tried tacking up the Bure with that flow, what would happen. Mind you, if I was coming the other way,you'd be in for a surprise.

    • @TheCaptainsBlog
      @TheCaptainsBlog  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      john gaskell I recon what would happen is you would rapidly be taken back down the river - it is not just a question even of if one had enough wind to make way, because the current can run at about 5MPH so depending on your boats length at waterline you could be approaching maximum hull speed with the current rushing past it even though you would not be making way. If your top speed in calm water with no current was say 7MPH with the 5MPH current acting against you you'd only have a couple more mils per hour to play with and with wind being a fickle thing and not often being constant it all could go rather wrong.

      In a sailing yacht, the direction or strength of wind would be of little or no matter - your mast would have to be down flat otherwise you'll not make it under the two bridges.

    • @TheCaptainsBlog
      @TheCaptainsBlog  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Foolish comment based upon assumptions. Timing is known but does not work when the low water time would cause you to need to navigate after dark. The earlier low water time was before sunrise. This is late October with shorter days and needing to return to the northern rivers. I’ve done this so many times now in so many boats as long as I have clearance under the bridges is the main concern.

    why not just tie the boat to a tree and walk to acle? much quicker and better for the environment than that old smoker chugging up the briny :-(
