I remember the innistrad pre-release, and someone pulled a foiled snapcaster. People were giving high fives over it. Guess it was a different era.

This has been an excellent set as a collector rather than an investor. Loved revisiting these cards.

Rudy, my roadmap for MTG in the next 10 years is to include one collectors pack with every Taco Bell order and that pack will contain at least one power 9 gold border reprint. In all reality, opening boxes and packs used to bring me a feeling of tension. Nail-biting tension. I remember when my dad and I opened Innistrad boxes after release and pulled ONE Liliana. Not a foil. Not a full border. Not a textured braille, box topper, serialized Liliana. An OG print Liliana of the Veil. We both celebrated with smiles on our faces. Opening packs used to have a redeeming quality, will you pull the chase rare/mythic? Will you miss the chase rare and pull a few 10-20$ cards? Will you get the bulk boxes? Who knows?!? There was something about a sealed booster box that the boxes nowadays could never compare. I know I’ll get blasted for having “Rose Tinted Glasses” on while reminiscing about the past, but was there ever a reason that we needed to deviate from a FUNCTIONAL system? Stores used to have TONS of bulk that you could simply ask “can I look at ‘enter any set here’” and you could find those missing game pieces for your deck that Friday. You could see the piles of rares in display cases from the Stores’ mass box openings. Maybe I am just stuck in the past, but I still think Magic was always more than just a game. It was a COLLECTIBLE CARD GAME. I could bring my binder to the shop, crack it open and have the attention of the other person because it was always a fun time seeing what people collected based on who they are and what they played. I felt like my binder was a reflection of ME. I could trade cards that were worth a few bucks and offer trade fodder for that Liliana I wanted. The collectability of the cards is what really made me happy. I felt a sense of satisfaction from my cards. I felt like the cards meant something. The only thing that means anything now is the connections made from shit talking what once was a wonderful game company that hosted events and had cards that would make players smile. Now I sit back and think about how ruined the CCG aspect of the card game is. Now, I dont CARE about my cards. They just sit there and remind me of what once was.
Ice age was the period when I was playing magic the most. Jester's cap is such a memorable iconic card.

I am a massively outspoken critic about Wizards, they have a million different things they've done with Magic in recent times that absolutely deserve criticism, but do Rudy's comments rub anyone else as giving off "old man yelling at the sky" vibes? It seems he's mad simply because every single aspect of the game hasn't stayed exactly the same as it was earlier in its history. Complaining about cards being affordable, or whining that foil mythics no longer cost as much as a college degree, is just silly.
Not to mention some of the stuff he complains about is just completely ill-informed. Like at 25:15 where he says "Explorations, 10 to 15 dollar cards back in Conspiracy", clearly insinuating he thinks its price has tanked? The card is still $8-10, dude. Certainly hasn't come anywhere near being worthless. But despite that, he complains. Because he hates the idea of cards being affordable so much, that even when he doesn't know the current market value, he automatically assumes it's gone down the toilet because affordability bad.
Its cringeworthy to say the least. Watching him rant because cards like Shivan Dragon aren't worth anything anymore, I really can't help but think wtf do you think man. Nobody cares about old cards that are useless now. You might as well complain that cards coming out now are too good. Truth of the matter is you can still turn a profit on most mass pulls you just have to do it over more sales. Yeah you can't open 6 boxes and hope to pull 2 cards that make up the investment but I bought a box of All Will Be One and after flipping made 40 bucks in profit. I'm sure someone will say wellllll back in the day blah blah blah. But honestly if you think about it as markets go I'm interested to see what happens if all these old nostalgia stans leave leaving a vacuum of sellers if maybe we will go back to the days where you can send your kids to college with a few dozen cards. With all the reprinting probably not but im gonna go buy another box.

There are only 4 cards in Dominaria Remastered over $20; Urza’s Incubator (minus the retro frame,) borderless only Sylvan Library, Vampiric Tutor, & Force of Will.

Yeah its great for the average player in the short term, but when the local communities are dead because they don't have a place to draft on Fridays, or play Pioneer on Tuesdays, their interest for the game will fade. This will kill Magic and once the damage is done, it will be too late to reverse the damage :/

I like that the shock lands could go down in value. It would make an actually good mana base affordable rather than needing to sell a kidney for it. Though if they do go down in value, they should add other chase cards.

Wizards always goes way overboard. Years ago, all we wanted was one extra reprinting of "game pieces" and maybe a chance at an extra foil so we could stop having to shell out a hundred bucks for a single fetch land.
WotC sees this and is like "YOU GOT IT, REPRINTS FOR EVERYTHING SIX TIMES A YEAR AND EVERY PACK HAS 32 FOILS"
Then when we complain to them that this is too much and that sealed product has no EV, they can be like "Well we gave you what you want, you're just really too picky"
As an aside, I think Rudy's disdain for the "Timmys" who wanted more reprints is horrendously misplaced, WotC is 99% to blame for all the issues with MtG today
MTG is a competitive card game first and foremost so the prime objective of any set should be to make competitive cards as affordable as possible.
They should never concern themselves with what people want to do on the secondary market beyond acquiring those competitive cards.
Also i dont get why people are so upset about too many foil cards - the fact that they are shiny has nothing to do with how rare they are, nor does a reprint of an older card in different print change how rare or collectible that original print is.
The things that mtg community is complaining about now are complete norms in every other tcg - reprints, foil cards being common and affordable versions of competitive cards
You are arguing for the competitive aspect without regard for collectability, then you go and say reprints are like this in all other card games and can't see the point...magic the gathering is not a competitive card game first 😂 it has its roots in the 90s and art was a big thing and so was rarity, why should magic be like all other card games? It always set the standard until recently. If all you care about is this, then people like you should just push what you really want, prepackaged sets with guaranteed cards at bottom bin pricing. 😆 it will always be a mistake to make a collectible feel as though it has no real value.

I thought my post was pretty clear that I don't agree with the current system. I don't know what's so hard to understand about the stance that game pieces shouldn't ever be $1-$2, but they also shouldn't be $100+ either. When did the idea of small adjustments and basic compromise become so triggering to people as a collective?
I bought a box of draft boosters this set for my nephew for his birthday. He only just learned to play with a couple kids at school. His collection consists of a couple decks he put together for free in a weekend class his school put on in the summer where they learned to play various fantasy/strategy games. No matter what the investment price of this set, I think this set has a great cross section of awesome magic cards from different sets over the years. I'd love to have a set like this to draw from as a starting point when I was 15! I hope he keeps them for a long time, perhaps long enough that MTG is no longer produced in physical / collectable form.

It's entirely possible that the Ravnica Remastered print run has already concluded and all the cards are sitting in a warehouse. (They don't print product in the same order they release product.) WoTC knows they overprinted based on current demand for other products, so they skip to the part where they firesale the product on Amazon. What's the real cost to WoTC for a sealed box, $40-$50? Or maybe they are testing the waters, so to speak, measure the demand then print to it?

dominaria remastered draft box is probaly the most printed set ever.. Not only they put that box in 3 times into the secret lair, it has 2 dumbsales on amazon, on big tradingsides and also there is still such a high demand and low prices for everything. If they reprint another force of will or Urza’s Incubator in the future this set will complete collapse
In other news, the availability of DMR has led to more than a few great Draft nights. This was a set made for drafting, and in a limited setting, it makes for a fun draft experience, y'know, like the reason the game was designed. Collectability should always be secondary to game play.

I opened a box of this. The best value card I got was an Urza, Lord hihg artificer retroframe in foil. At the time was a 60€ card, now it's barely 25€. What a time to be alive...
The best card to get graded is a non foil land with the most taco fingerprint grease on it

Rudy I watch all your videos to be honest I am a humble Timmy but I feel the old steer the course and hang in their kitty kat will prevail as always but this time will be a really fuckin weird one we will all look back on. I think buyin the dip on singles and speculation on modern cards will always be fun and eventually like you always say people with heavy bags and time will make it back with being the last sealed product lord out there. Thanks for always being real and topical and even if things get worse please always do MTG box openings they bring alot of joy to us all! Ill go back and finish watching this video now…

I know it’s not exactly a value card, but I’m actually considering grading it just because it’s gorgeous and one I’d like to have a high grade version of in personal collection.
It’s a gorgeous set, lots of nostalgia, and a blast to play, but it hasn’t exactly held up as value town.
The Draft Booster Boxes were obviously packed with the dregs that were left behind after the Dominaria Remastered print run was plundered of Mythics and Rares for the Collector Boosters. The Draft Boxes weren't even good for drafting as there was no effort made to balance the quantity of cards of each color.
If the manufacturer is undercutting its vendors. That means they don’t want vendors. If the manufacturer starts selling singles, then they want to remove a secondary market of mint cards.
And it is already starting to happen. Secret Lair is just the first step. Soon, at some point, there will be a print to demand service. The upshot for Hasbro is that there will be more Magic players than ever, but the bad news is the instant collectability will demolish the secondary market. This is a game first. The popularity of the cards in the game based on usage should be the immediate driver of value, not just its rarity. Game pieces can still hold great value if the cards are great.

Based on hits, the boxes were definitely busts. Based just on the rares/mythics and valuing them all, all three boxes together still only come out to about $200-225 US at time of ripping. Even adding in value for the bulk since I’m using it to build a replica Draft Cube and from the retro basics, this was not value town, and based on my personal goals the duplication actually hurt even more than just being less desired Rares and mythics. Yowch.

I just don't see why it can't be both and. Why is it always either you get cheap game pieces or you get expensive collectibles? It should be we get both. Make decks cheap to make, make cards accessible, but have collectible versions that are hard to pull. These collector boxes have done nothing but tank singles, those cards should be hard to pull singles in draft or set boosters but instead theyre just as cheap as every other variant, sometimes cheaper. Pokemon has had it figured out for YEARS yet Magic seems to be blind to it. Have alternate arts be the chase. Not these weird serialized cards. Get rid of collector boxes and make those beautiful variants hard to pull rarities in a regular set. Maybe call them...idk.. MASTERPIECES?
"Game Pieces' players by and large would have no problem with this system at all. We'd get cheap cards and get to play a game without spending more on it than our cars. The issue is the investors don't want to admit that they use us to prop up the value of their investments. They want our demand for a card to play at FNM or a tournament to drive up the price of theirs. If we ever stopped buying purely to play their cards would collapse overnight

Does Rudy ever talk about what happened to Tarmogoyf? I’m confused with the complaint of “game pieces.” If the company is making bad business decisions I get it. And obviously he runs a store so how he sees something is different compared to the players but like some of these cards aren’t “special” or pricey because they aren’t really played anymore. If something is collectible it’s collectible because of what it is. A 1967 corvette is still a collectible because of what it is. They still make corvettes and the 1967’s value is the same. And it’s cool to open old cards a format like premodern is awesome but yeah let’s pretend like savannah lion is still really awesome in comparison to Ragavan or unmask is great compared to Grief. If the price goes down, like Tarmogoyf, it’s because it’s a game piece no matter how much of a collectible you want it to be. Also, Pokémon decks are under $100, but people still collect them

What card got graded?
I think wizards of the Coast is taking actions to get people who have contracts with them and distributors to cancel those contracts so if they will no longer have to sell to them and can move to a strictly Amazon based box case palette in direct to consumer sale.
I also think that wizards of the Coast is going to move to a model where they scrap entirely the sale of boxes cases and pallets, and move to single sales model using TCG player and the like to handle the logistics for a fee.
Why would they want to sell Say a Sheoldred the apocalypse for like a quarter in a pack when they could sell it in directly on TCG player for $50?
I feel with reprints of reprints of reprints in three consecutive sets we have entered the air of 365 magic where within a year wizards of the coast will destroy any cards, value by printing and re-printing, and re-re-printing that into oblivion.
With a model of indirect sales, they could offer a trade-in value that would be far more than you could ever hope to function in the market, so you trade in the card at a substantially reduced rate from what you purchased it from wizards of the coast through TCG at hence office 365 magic 365.
They want to form the first ever Galactic Empire.
Then why are they destroying all their reprint equity?
@@Just_Pele the answer is simple. Let’s say in bloom borough the upcoming set they sell each of them mythics for $10 in the first six months they offer a five dollar trade-in value after that it goes to three and then a year out goes to a dollar.
This would motivate players to trade in their old cards quickly and turn around and buy the next sets mythics for five dollars and the trade in value five dollars.
Couple sets later the six month trade in value drops to three dollars. They ate nine month trade in the two dollars and you’re out to $.50.
This sets up a pseudo-system, whereby they are effectively doing everything in their power to rent cards to the players in the same form in fashion that Microsoft office 365 Ranset software tool license holder for one calendar year.
Clearly, wizards cannot rent cards and once they’re sold, they are the property and in possession of the buyer, but such a system would set up a pseudo-system of renting the cards.
If wizards were to print cards with disappearing ink, it disappeared after 365 days or one calendar year from date of print. They would be liable for lawsuits for selling defective products. It just won’t work for them to do a physical work around renting this is the best case scenario for them to any fact, cause players to want to dump their cards before they lose value and take the trade-in this would generate sales for the new sets, and continue the cycle of renting the cards.
They would see either card rentals as residual sales, but more so a revolving cycle of renewal subscriptions.
Someday, when electronics become advanced enough, they might actually sell digitized cards that appear on screens in the cards themselves, and then after 365 days, the card goes blank when powered on, but that technology does not yet exist, but one of those rest, assured wizards wood with all the question switch to selling these Electronic Arts, so that they could license for a period of time the use of the card and then once the time is expired, collect a new fee, or just deactivate the card.

Those were horrible boxes and I noticed the ravnica remastered boxes a few nights ago and was already talking about how the pre-order was way down from the $211 or whatever it was for dominaria remastered last year and maybe wotc learned they can't charge premiums for a reprint set that is only going to damage the financials of the secondary market and then the videos come out talking about how they're undercutting the store costs.
I bought one Ravnica Remastered Draft box off Amazon as doubt any of my LGS will have it (nor will Rudy). Dominaria Remastered was fun to open so guessing this will be too? But my one box wont make a dent.

It makes no sense to me how you can complain about foils having no value and then buy into as many collector booster boxes as you do. Collector boosters destroyed foil value.
It's my personal belief that Dominaria Remastered was supposed to be the 30th anniversary set. Given that Magic 30 felt very hackneyed, and Dominaria Remastered was spoiled over a measley 2 days a week before release tells me it was shunted by some hotshot marking dipshit's attempt to kiss Hasbro's ass.
Nothing beautiful about $165 boxes. Just people screwing the consumer over.

There are many modern cards that need reprint but wotc is such "nit" they keep reprinting already cheap cards to hold at least some equity.
Honestly its been great getting such cheap cards for my decks. Everyone who hasn't made poor investment decisions is happy.
It's not just about investing. It's hard to sell an expensive box if the cards inside have no value. It also means your collection won't retain value in the future.

@@jperry253 if the stores can’t make money on magic products they won’t carry the products. And the amount of players has decreased the last couple years. Hence why we see a large increase in FAB players along with a ton of other tcgs on the market currently. There’s never been a time when magic has had this many healthy competing card games.
Bought a box or two of Dominaria remastered... didn't even bother opening a single pack. cards are reprints of reprints of reprints... nothing exciting about it.

Im a random guy on the internet, but if i had a store, i would focus on cultivating a tight knit customer base including tournaments, raffles, and various customer appreciation. I also think nearby stores need to work together to build the local fanbase

I feel your pain. I opened 3 draft boxes and 3 collector boxes of this set and did not pull a single Force of Will and ONE Vampiric Tutor
3 boxes and only 2 of the top 5 cards, thats not even the Amazon Dump price. Hope something good gets dumped tonight. Lol.
