      That's the point. I always feel regretful when a hero or character I love dies, but you can't really feel upset when that character's death is justified or at least had a point. Caim died and humanity was doomed, but they killed the queen beast. And humans later meet their demise for all that happened. I think it's a fascinating point of view. A cynical one that makes you love and care for a world but also gives you the sense that nothing really means anything. Something like that happens in Xenoblade Chronicles, where shulk and the homs are confronted with the fact that their god was just a petty piece of shit. The plot literally guides you through the idea of fate and you fighting against it to make your own. It talks of someone DENYING god, forging an entire new world with no gods. Instead of feeling hopeless or abandoned, they find relief in a world with no god. You have no idea if they'll get an afterlife or a way to cope with their existence, but they feel good because they don't care, just like you end up caring about caim but realizing he doesn't matter in the end

      @@stsleazy One thing that passes over a lot of people is that the Xeno-series is heavily inspired by Gnosticism, an old branch of Christianity that states that the God we know is an impostor who put all of Humanity in an abusive Stockholm situation and to free yourself from this reality to find the true God that is actually good.
      This even relates to the Drakennier series in that the Grotesqueries were actually called Angels in the JP dub and lore books showed that God hated humanity and was willing to destroy them at all cost. So when the the Giant Angel was defeated, her holy dust spread around and forced people to accept "God" or die. 2B's opening quote sets the tone for the whole game. "Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never-ending spiral of life and death. Is this a curse? Or some kind of punishment? I often think about the god who blessed us with this cryptic puzzle...and wonder if we'll ever get the chance to kill him.?"
      In the end both Xeno and Drakenier share similar themes and conclusions, for good reason too, they were inspired by the same source...

    I've been thinking a lot about this ending and Yoko Taro's narritive and diction.
    I've heard on many regards this ending is a "joke ending" and not meant to be taken seriously. I mean, I don't blame people for thinking so. "Thank you for Playing" at the end and "Unidentified Target Neutralised" in such a cocky tone.
    Although, this ending's meaning seems almost obvious. Maybe others have seen it this way too, who knows.
    To start, the dragon's name is Angeles, which right out sounds similar to "Angel" symbolic of a holy being of God. Now, while the "Mother Beast" does not have a name, the realm that occurs before this ending is hellish, satanic, the music and atmosphere are disturbing and dreadful. To put it plainly, when Angeles and Caim are consumed by the flash of light and enter the modern world, it feels reminiscent of the Biblical judgement day when Heaven and Hell shall before all mortal eyes to witness.
    Angeles and Caim are victorious, and the Mother Beast dies before them. Heaven has saved all humanity from Hell making it's way onto earth. Though when all seems bright, a simple fighter jet shoots down and kills Angeles with Caim falling into the unknown.
    How I interpet, despite Heaven defeating Hell, Yoko Toro continues to mock human's destructive nature in rejecting, and in this case, destroying anything they don't understand.
    That powerful, painful long moments of silence as Angeles falls from the sky and the deteriorating of the Mother Beast feels grim...Humans have rejected Heaven even in their most dire moment of need, that humans aren't worth surviving. The White Chlorination Syndrome that occurs after feels like the ensuing end of humans, their punishment for turning their back on their saviour.
    To Chlorinate is to lose every trace of water, and water throughout time is symbolic of life. Symbolic as the most sacred and holy thing that inhabits all. WCS entirely disintigrates a person's being. If water is symbolic as God, just as humans turned their back on God, so too does He turn their back on them.
    I'm not saying Yoko Taro believes humans don't deserve life, but for the time period Drakengard came out the 9/11 terror attacks weren't far off from...

      Yoko Taro has straight up admitted as such. In fact, many things in Automata were straight up jacked from other books, films, TV shows, and even other games. You know the plains region in Automata that connects most of the other regions and works as sort of a hub region? Well, that's Hyrule Field. He straight up jacked the entire map layout of Ocarina of time and copied it and put it into his game.He even timed how long it takes Link to run across Hyrule field and made it so the trek in Automata takes the exact same amount of time. He has absolutely no reservations about telling everyone about how unoriginal he is. Weirdly enough, it still makes him pretty damn unique. It makes sense with his design philosophy too. During a GDC conference, he made a little visual aid to help would be developers to make weird games like he does. The picture said "Not Important: The Game", "The important thing: "!" Making the player feel something is the only thing he really cares about. All the other stuff is just a vehicle to bring out that emotion.

    A sentence that describes Caim perfectly. I certainly don't condone his more horrific actions, but when you look at the character as a whole, from the blur of trauma that was his backstory to the genuine care he has for those close to him, such as Furiae and Angelus, I can't help but see the kingdomless prince as a rather human and tragic figure; one that would go on to revel in carnage and do some truly dickish things, but would nonetheless have moments scattered throughout that show traces of goodness.
    It's honestly sad knowing that the corpses of Caim, Angelus, and the grotesquerie queen would go on to become the foundations for the centuries of tragedies that would take place in the NieR world...

    • @daredl807
      @daredl807 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I can't really recall Caim doing anything "truly dickish", besides massacring some child soldiers that actually were a legitimate threat and turned on those that had spared them the moment they had their backs. The worst Caim had ever done was kick an elf that was begging for help in a moment of frustration and then kick Verdelet later, and boy if he had the benefit of hindsight, he should have killed that old racist coward on the spot and would have saved the world a lot of trouble in the long run. Sure, Caim revels in carnage against his enemies, but you have to bear in mind that his enemies are mind-wiped, enslaved puppets of an empire that is ruled by a cosmic horror. Only overwhelming, uncompromising violence could stand against such a thing. His violence and anger were completely justified and his capacity for love shows that he wasn't a mindless psychopath either.

The guy has no life outside of killing, and is only tolerated by the Union because they need his strength and his opponents are literally brainwashed fodder. If/when the war ends, Caim would be seen as a dangerous animal at best, since they no longer have a convenient source of bodies for him to kill.
      Angelus does hint in some
      Missions that Caim isn’t even trying to accomplish an objective, just satisfy his killing desires. It’s all he’s left with…

      @D4rkkn1ght1000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +156

      Game Archive drakengard 3's boss was intentionally trying to mess you up in the rythm fight.
      song starts and everything is simple, just hit one button as the circle comes near the dragon, simple enough right?
      then the song splits in to segments with a different rythm per segment that shows up, but it is still rather doable.
      AND THEN segment 3 begins where not only is the rythm slightly different which means you can mess up by just being off by the rythm changing, THE CAMERA STARTS MOVING AROUND and zooming in, mean you can't rely on your eyes to see the circles before they reach the dragon you're flying, still okay as long as you can keep an ear out on the rythm.
      And then segment 5 begins which is 3 but worse cause now the camera is just all over the place and you basicly have to play it by ear.
      finally, as one last screw you, the final segment starts off fast but progressively gets slower as the segment continues, until finally, the screen slowly fades to black, the song is beginning to stop, dialogue rolls in as you think the song is over, and then, DING, you hear the sound of one more note but can't see it and the rythm is so ungodly slow that you don't know when to hit the button and the dialogue is rolling on top of the last note too SO THE FINAL NOTE IS JUST A RANDOM SHOT IN THE DARK AND IF YOU MISS IT YOU GOTTA START BACK AT THE BEGINNING.
      Did i mention the entire boss segment is about 6 minutes in length? yeah, can't forget about that.
      overall i found the entire experience rather enjoyable and gave me a new experience of insanity and masochism

      From what I've seen of this game series, from the absurd unfairness of some of the boss battles (in Drakengard 3, you basically have to do this fight, except it's less forgiving and the camera shuts off at one point) to the brutal, bleak story lore, to this abrupt ending, it was created by people with a deep, deep contempt for their players and really humanity in general, and a desire to inflict suffering on them in any way possible. This is a game to troll the world.

      To be fair, it seems that Caim and Angel/Angelus were undergoing some form of calcification, likely due to the effects of White Chlorination Syndrome. This is probably why they broke off so easily after being shot, just as the Queen Beast did. This might also solidify the theory that Caim did indeed become a Red Eye, a special type of Legion in the Nier series, and was possibly the first one.
      Edit: Another point supporting the "Caim is The First Red Eye Theory" is that in the Grimoire NieR book, it's stated that only Angel/Angelus's body was recovered, with no trace of Caim's remains.

    • @MamaBedlamVO

      Important note that, frankly, it's unlikely the pilots could have done that. The Queen Beast was defeated when her Song was countered, Angelus and Caim are just flesh, and they were likely the first to undergo WCS.

    Years ago I remember reading an interview - I think was in Famitsu - with Yoko Taro where he mentioned that this ending was a direct reference to 9/11. I also remember feeling really weird and a little freaked out when I first read that. It was like the first time the magnitude of it all clicked with me, and I saw 9/11 in a way that wasn't just a tragic accident. I've thought a lot about how to describe this in words, but i've never really figured out how. It was like there was a kind of an unsettling sweetness to the way I felt - and I think, oddly enough, Drakengard helped me realize that emotion... whatever it was.
    Like I said, it was really weird and its the only time I can remember ever feeling that kind of a way.
