Obsession Journal, Day... Whatever, they're all starting to blur together. Now I'm digging on those moments when she absolutely nails whatever she's doing -- the music, appearance, lyrics, eye-blinks, whatever -- and she gets that smile as if to say, "yeah, that went well."
Vintage discount Harmony guitar, with gold foil "lipstick" pickups, the best part; Smiths single coil jangle when quiet, but sound a little like Angus Young humbuckers when cranked. She has built this song from some unusual chord progressions, and the lead solo bits near the end are so compressed by effects that the sound she is pushing out is like a moog, and blends right in with the key pads. She has really thought through every aspect of the sound, writing, and performance.
Lipstick pickups? I'm pretty sure you're mixing up terms here. This was a discount Harmony guitar with Gold Foils, so you're right there, but "Lipstick" pickups were and are Danelectro-specific. Danelectro were another budget company (and they've been re-started and re-made for years now,) but they're not the same company as Harmony of Chicago.
This sounds so different live, but in a good way. With no multi-tracking and synthesis of her vocals, you can just hear that pure, beautiful, and strong voice of Annie Clark. I can't wait to see her live at the Portland stopover with Mumford and Sons!!
It's funny how these are songs of isolation. I'm kinda isolated right now, and right now, songs from Strange Mercy appeal to me the most, even though it's her third best in my opinion.
I've had good times With some bad guys I've told whole lies With a half smile Held your bare bones With my clothes on I've thrown rocks That hit both my arms I don't know what good it serves Pouring my purse in the dirt But I-I-I-I-I don't wanna be your cheerleader no more But I-I-I-I-I don't wanna be your cheerleader no more I've played dumb When I knew better Tried so hard Just to be clever I know honest thieves I call family I've seen America With no clothes on But I-I-I-I-I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more But I-I-I-I-I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more I don't know what I deserve But for you I could work Cause I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more I don't wanna be a dirt eater no more I don't wanna be a dirt eater no more I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more
St Vincent is good!!! Now, if only they could get her, the national, and The Moth & The Flame (a new, underground band that is my current favorite) on tour together that would be pure freakin ecstasy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anybody else notice that she smiles at the start of just about every chorus from every song in the session? I like to think a camera man or someone started rocking out and she thought it was funny...
Never mind this guy, he's a no brainer. The lyrics are amazing and actually tell a story and a deep message. This is real stuff... Go listen to Katy Perry if you want something simple.
Songwriters use slang because it sounds better/more natural. Notice she doesn't sing, "I do not want to be a cheerleader anymore." It would sound ridiculous. Thus, "I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more."
Intelligent music does not have straightforward lyrics. If you do not understand a song, find something more simple. Seek mainstream, more "dumbed down" music that is less than two minutes.
No... Only in my case it's more or less an exaggerated truthful and sometimes allegorical lyric. "Cheerleader" of my own destruction (getting _outrageously pissed beyond reason_ at people for their wrongs won't help me...)
What makes Anne special is that she is one of the few acts who sound better live than on the studio record.
I like that, through the chorus, the look on her face is "I wrote the perfect song"...
WHAT INCOMPREHENSIBLE LEVEL OF HD IS THIS???????????????
I prefer this version so much more, seeing Annie's eyes/smile just makes the song all the more perfect than it already is.
St. Vincent's best era, imo.
Anne is definetely happy there. And I'm happy too. To be witnessed her great performance.
12 years later and still probably my favorite live video of an artist. Definitely at her best at this time
The live concert with David Byrne for Love This Giant is insanely good. Best version of Wild Wild Life ever.
I think she's one of the few contemporary artists that's capable of a grounded, yet really inspired live performance.

i love the chords in this song so much!!! particularly the chorus

Cool story bro!

I - Love - St Vincent.
Seen her live, she's from another planet
WOW!!..SHE IS AMAZING🎶💕🎵💖
Every artist has their high water mark, and this is hers.
Why isn't this song in the 40 minute performance video? Its the best version of this song out there.
Her voice makes love to my ears.
i've listened to this 15 times in a row, too much?
Not enough, 2 years ago.
Never enough, ever
No, I've watched these videos many times and I keep coming back.
I'm going to see her in paris this summer. She is so amazing i can't wait
annie's smile gives me life
Same. It's so beautiful 😍
I don't think anyone has ever made the word "I" sound so sensual :x
I've had good times
With some bad guys
I've told whole lies
With a half smile
Held your bare bones
With my clothes on
I've thrown rocks
That hit both my arms
I don't know what good it serves
Pouring my purse in the dirt
But I-I-I-I-I don't wanna be your cheerleader no more
But I-I-I-I-I don't wanna be your cheerleader no more
I've played dumb
When I knew better
Tried so hard
Just to be clever
I know honest thieves
I call family
I've seen America
With no clothes on
But I-I-I-I-I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more
But I-I-I-I-I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more
I don't know what I deserve
But for you I could work
Cause I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more
I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more
I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more
I don't wanna be a dirt eater no more
I don't wanna be a dirt eater no more
I don't wanna be a cheerleader no more
The drummer just creepin in the background! YES!

I've seen god.
This os really really great, but i still prefer original
This song is a double negative, so she's actually saying that she wants to be a cheerleader.
0:02 ROBERT DOWNEY JR?????
mmmmmm
me three?
^_^
I thought she was strictly Chicky....

Do you have to be on drugs to listen to this?
No... Only in my case it's more or less an exaggerated truthful and sometimes allegorical lyric. "Cheerleader" of my own destruction (getting _outrageously pissed beyond reason_ at people for their wrongs won't help me...)
Wow, she is even better live! Amazing (:
Check out my cover of Cheerleader on my channel!
I'm a man but i'd like to be her girlfriend😅
thumbs up if you think the drummer is creepy
