You talking about "propping up" weak hives. We think alike on that. My dad was nursing a weak hive for pretty good while. I told him you sure are putting a lot of extra energy Into that one . He came back with the old saying "the squeaky wheel gets the oil". I told him I find it cheaper to replace the wheel rather than keep buying oil....... 😆.
Great information and I like your style of beekeeping. I run all single deep brood boxes all year except spring build up I let her lay in a super or two. And I overwinter in a deep and a medium and so far so good. Looks like you do it similar. Good luck with your bees.
Hey Gus, what kind of plywood do you use for your lids? Is it AdvanTech? They look very simple, practical and economical. I'd love to see a short video sometime with a little detail on what you do for your tops and bottoms! I need to build some economical ones that will do the job and last a decent time. Thanks!

I have started applying this technique in my 15 hive operation, trying to take my losses in the Fall, did a combine last weekend due to finding a big hive queenless, plugged in a nuc box with a laying queen....... Great video Gus!
Gus another good and timely video. I agree with how you handled the situation. My question is, what if you have a queen right hive that is weak but no queenless hives to combine it with. Would you pull brood frames from the stronger hives to build up a hive that is weak but has a good young queen? Or would you just feed them and hope they can build up or remove the queen and combine the bees with another hive?
Do those resource hives ever swarm when they get foundation? Do you add foundation on top or in the middle box? With my season in Ohio comb drawing season and swarm season happen at the same time 😐
That’s not part of my management, I make some late summer to build up off of the fall flow. Some people have great success with gal splits, just not my thing.

Combine, either kill the weak queen or let the strong colony do it

What about fall splits with mated queens?
That’s not part of my management, I make some late summer to build up off of the fall flow.
Some people have great success with gal splits, just not my thing.
I did that the other day, talked and talked and then later discovered the camera had a dead battery.😅
