  • This video is my one and only from the Hive Life conference 2023. It's also my first Interview. I think that nerves get to all of us at times and I'm no different. After spending a good deal of time with Chris that day I completely blanked on his name! Chris got a good laugh, and I really appreciated him carving out some time for the interview.
The subject is Queen rearing and there are some great tips in there!

Hello Gus! You likely were not aware, but I am so thankful that you provided your comb-honey for the Pierce Beekeeping Equipment display. I had a cough that kept interrupting my fun, and I needed that comb! It absolutely worked! THANK YOU! You have a new subscriber :)

On these rainy days, I listen to stuff like this while I piddle around. I call it “gleaning TH-cam” looking for little nuggets of information, tips and tricks that you get from listening to beekeepers talk!!! Hoping all is well Gus!!!

Gus, tip on not losing queens when pulling from nuc. I saw a large breeder that had his workers use a folding table. Like a TV dinner tray. They had the nucs on the ground and would set the nuc on the table and work over it. Zero loss unless they moved away from the table.

That jump to hiring (paying) someone to help will be a big hard step for you. You have some good genetics and if marketed effectively could make you some money. But where do you find a "Carrie" in Memphis?? Maybe a retired person who is a hobbyist beek ?

I hired some part time help last year, but one is in jail for the foreseeable future and the other got a full time regular job.

Great questions on this interview. I graft just enough cells for myself and the info on acceptance and NUC strength is clutch. Would love to get in touch with you about some t-post adapters. I’ve seen the video, and the update, and I’d love to purchase four or five if you’ve had any extras made to sell yet. Chris Werner is a wealth of knowledge. Loved the 5 part series Bob did with him. Thanks for making and sharing this interview! By the way, not sure if you caught the comment on the Kamon stream last night, but I remembered the BBQ place I used to go to and loved and couldn’t remember when we were talking: Jim Neely’s Interstate BBQ.

I don’t have it worked out to sell any yet but as soon as I do I’ll let you know!
I love that series to I’ve watched it multiple times.
As far as bbq I like Paynes, they’re hard to beat

Gus, everyone makes mistakes, especially in an interview situation. I like your transparency about the slip up which, shows your authenticity. Chris was one of my favorite speakers at the conference this year. He has a great delivery and is extremely knowledgeable. Thanks for sharing a little extra content with him. I didn't get to meet you at HL. I wish I would have said hello. I am planning on increasing my queen rearing this season. Look forward to following your 2023. All the best to you!
