hard to believe this is 41 years old. still sound fresh and new to me. from a great album, Avalon.
True. Doesn't sound outdated at all.
I was 17 when this came out .im 58 now and I still think it sounds amazing .❤
I went to see them at the O2 in London last October. Those 41 years rolled away like Avalon mist on a summer's day, and there I was watching Bryan Ferry sing More Than This. What an amazing experience, never thought it would happen. I've seen Genesis and Elton and Peter Gabriel in the last year or so and you know, it's just possible Roxy was the best, in their understated way.
It’s as old as me!! Still young 😉
Please, I was 17 and dancing the night away in Barons nightclub. The 80’s was the greatest period for New Romantics and boy were Roxy music at the top of their game. I just wished there was a revival of that era. Such a great time for us kids born in the mid 60;s to early 70’s. TrueType was the happiest time of my life.
Ahh Roxy Music featuring Mr. Suave himself,Bryan Ferry….one of the smoothest vocalists ever.
Absolutely 💯
❤❤❤
Some people have described him as seeming smug. I think I might be pretty smug if I had a band like Roxy Music.
It’s an eno production. Great singer, plus everything eno touches turns to gold
@@futurereflections4097Eno didn't produce Avalon album. He was long gone from Roxy Music by 1982
Bryan Ferry is the only Englishman more suave than James Bond. 😊 I cannot recommend enough his song, "Slave To Love" from Bryan Ferry's highly successful solo album, 'Boys and Girls'. And it's fair to say there is as much melancholy and yearning in his music as there is romance. Btw, he just celebrated his 78th birthday. 🎉
Great suggestion.
Slave for love ohhh I would love to see their reaction to that!
The film 'Skyfall' implies that Bond is Scottish.
Not that it matters.
David Niven was called "archetypically English". But he had a Scottish name and was born in Scotland to a Scottish father and a French mother.
Then again there is Ian Anderson.
@jamesstewart8846 David niven was born in London, according to his birth certificate, to an English mother, and a father of Scottish decent. He's English.
This is just such a beautiful song with so many incredible textures in the music and of course Bryan Ferry's vocals are outstanding. It's one of those great bittersweet songs that moves you. Great reaction, guys.
It’s pretty boring tbh
@@Inequitiesit might sound like Elevator Music perhaps on first listen (like some have dismissed Steely Dan) but give it another listen or two. It grows on you, especially with headphones or a great sound system
@@Inequities just like your life.
@@samuraienterprises9802 😂😂😂 so I’m not allowed to say that I think the song is a little boring, and that deserves a harsh insult. Some anger issues?
This song takes me back to a simpler time where the possibilities truly felt endless.
😢❤
A time when getting up was fairly enjoyable!
Me Too! Feel The Same.
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Love Is The Drug" and singer Bryan Ferry's solo hit "Slave To Love" !!!
"Love Is The Drug" is upbeat, Jay will like that!! Love how fast you came back to them!!
And Don’t Stop the Dance.
Oh yeah, forgot about "Slave To Love"!, another really good one.
They'll love these songs...or they won't. Let them listen and decide for themselves.
Virginia Plain and Let's Stick together as well!
In Every Dream Home A Heartache and Oh Yeah as well.
Other great songs from Roxy Music:
"Love Is The Drug", "Avalon", "Dance Away" "Same Old Scene", and a great remake of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy".
Good choices. they did Avalon 3 weeks ago
Love Is The Drug is a must listen!
Love their version of jealous guy more than the original
"Love Is the Drug" is iconic, one of the best song openings ever and a must-listen. "Same Old Scene" is one of my fav Roxy Music songs, and I rarely see any mention of it: sax, synth, and that bass line is a killer.
And if you are ever feeling somewhat dysfunctional, you can try listening to Virginia Plain.
Beautiful song!! I grew up in the 80’s. That was a great decade!!!
Yes!
Carolyn, I grew up in the 60's and I agree, this is a beautiful, sad song, and the 80's was a great decade, esp. its music. Btw, I have all the Brian Ferry and Roxy Music lp's.
It sure brings back memories,
The 80s was the most creative, original, and innovative decade of music ….ever. It was truly remarkable!
I met my late husband in 1983 and we lived in Harvard Square in Cambridge, MA. We got married in 1985. We had a daughter Erica in 1990, and a son in 1993. We were married for 31 years, and I lost him to an asthma attack on August 10, 2016. Absolutely gut wrenching. Every time I hear this song it brings me right back. He was an amazing husband and dad ❤️❤️
To me, this is musical perfection. 40 years later and I still go back to it all the time
Absolutely!
Brian Ferry is the 1980’s version of a crooner. He was the suave gentleman of the time. The music plus his vocal style is really unique. It just has that je ne sais quoi.
I always liked his "lounge lizard" persona.
Roxy Music! ❤ The original keyboard player, Brian Eno is a *huge* influence on popular music, producing U2, Talking Heads, David Bowie (especially during his classic Berlin Trilogy era), Devo, Coldplay etc. Not to mention pioneering Ambient Electronic music with his own solo work!
Brian Ferry’s no slouch either!
More the synth player 🙂
@marialupinacci5283 Synth interface back then was usually a keyboard, so...
Here come the Warm Jets and Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy) are masterpieces
Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry at their romantic amd sensuous best! Totally unmatched and next level!🔥
Roxy Music is a brilliant band. Check out their debut single "Virginia Plain" to see how they started out. Very unconventional.
Bryan Ferry had a terrific solo career, too. Check out "Slave to Love" from his album "Boys and Girls"
And the song Boys and Girls is🔥
I loved "In Your Mind" Boy, I just wore that album out.
Virginia Plain is an excellent choice for Jay and Amber! That song is amazing!
yeah, they used a pic of the early line up with Brian Eno; I hope they react to some songs from that period
The clip of them doing that on "Top Of The Pops" with Eno...
“Love Is the Drug,” best Roxy Music song. Such a cool vibe.
I like "Same Old Scene" even better.
My favourite is Dance Away
@@surfpsych my second favorite
Yes, 3ove is The Drug!
One of the greatest songs ever. This entire album, Avalon, is a masterpiece. After Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry had an equally amazing solo career. He's one of those guys whose natural dress code is a tuxedo.
Watching Amber's reaction -almost tearing-up...Yes, a beautiful song, a GREAT singer. Used to love this band way back....
This is the first time they've ever heard Roxy Music? Boy are they going to enjoy their back catalogue. So many great tunes.
Ahhh, man you guys are killing me with the walk down memory lane tonight! This song came out in 1982 when I was 14, but I didn't discover it until college in the late 80s and got into the really cool music. I remember sitting in my dorm room listening to this and just feeling that it transcended....reality.
I hope you will check out Ultravox soon! Similar vibe as Roxy Music, but I think "Vienna" is one that will just blow you away, for real.
Yes Midge Ure another awesome vocalist!
Ultravox oh yes!!!
Both Ends Burning
Yeah between and The Search is Over…..makes me want to dig up my mix tapes of course nothing to play them on these days lol
Love “Vienna”!
I love how Amber started out bouncing to the song and within seconds she picked up on the smooth, emotional flow of the song and she completely changed her emotional reaction to the song. I can see that this song touched her very deeply as it does to most of us. Very beautiful.
This song is high art and the pinnacle of 80s make-out music at the same time. Beautiful album.
Love this song! Bryan Ferry is always just such a cool vibe. "Love is the Drug" is another awesome Roxy Music song I'd recommend.
Edit: "Dance Away" is another good one of theirs I really like, too.
The name caught the attention of this old retired Merchant Marine Captain. Back in the day this would have been termed "easy listening ".
Love this song. Always have. Bryan Ferry is the smoothest singer ever, and his style is so unbelievably romantic.
I am so excited that you are reviewing this song!!! Dance Away would be a great follow-up, very catchy and pop, more disco-ish.
I loved your reaction to this, Jay and Amber.
There are two Roxy Music eras, early and later, 'Virginia Plain', 'Pyjamarama', 'Street Life', 'Mother of Pearl', 'The Thrill of It All', is some of their earlier stuff; 'The Same Old Scene', 'The Space Between Us', 'Dance Away', 'Angel Eyes' and 'Oh Yeah' is some of their later stuff.
Mother of Pearl was the first Roxy Music song I had ever heard . I had to go buy the album.
@@chantaloblander9039 It's an excellent album, I much prefer early Roxy Music, there's nothing wrong with their later stuff, it's good, but just different.
Roxy Music with the amazing Bryan Ferry. They finally and rightfully took their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few years ago. My favorite British pop/new wave group of the 80s. Thanks for listening to this beautiful song. Amber, you would really love their song “Love is the Drug.”
It's sad to me because this was so big in the summer of 1982, and I'll never have my youth back again!
This is my favorite Roxy Music song by far.
Their live version of "Both Ends Burning" is such high energy! They are such a great band. "Oh Yeah", "Angel Eyes" "Do The Strand" "In Every Dream Home A Heartache"-every one a different sound. I hope you have a great time diving into them.
Bryan Ferry's voice just puts you in a trance and may not be aware of it❤ In the movie. "Lost in Translation", this song is performed (karaoke) by Bill Murray & Scarlett Johansson❣️❣️
The have to watch that one. And now they won't miss the song (or the symbolism). Don't forget "Brass in Pocket (I'm Special" by The PRETENDERS 😉
@@RobertSmith-js2kz Yes!! That one was also great👌
My fave from Roxy. Bryan Ferry's voice was accompanied by female Haitian vocalist, Yanick Étienne, who registered in the higher notes during the verse and chorus. On the chorus, Fonzi Thornton, who worked with many artists, also sang backing vocals on the chorus. Just listen carefully to " . . while the sea on the tide . . " and you will hear Yanick's voice. Once you hear her and anchor your ear, you can hear her singing behind him with a lot of reverb and delay. So, it's not Bryan doing the falsetto, he's singing in the mid ranges throughout. Bryan did this on quite a few albums, where his voice was "shadowed" by a female. Bob Clearmountain's mixing is elegant.
Thank you Jay & Amber for doing this follow up to Roxy Music's "Avalon". I really have no words to express the full impact this song has on me (that I can admit to on a public platform ☺). Bryan Ferry.... his sensuous voice, his sensuous moves. And who else can wear a freaking bow tie with a leather jacket and look freaking that HOT!
For the rock side of Roxy Music you have to hear "In Every Dream Home A Heartache"!
So good you reacted to this great New Romantic/New Wave song, and on WLIR Day! WLIR 92.7 FM was a radio station with a slogan that fit perfectly with the music they played, DARE TO BE DIFFERENT. WLIR changed their format in the early 80's & started playing New Wave music. My fav song by Roxy Music is "Love Is the Drug" released in the 70's. There are some prominent 80's New Wave bands that you never reacted to yet, namely XTC, Psychedelic Furs, Echo & the Bunnymen, and Siouxsie & the Banshees
One of the great bands of all time. And one of my favorite songs.
In Every Dreamhome a Heartache is my favorite Roxy Music song. So unusual.
"I bought you mail-order, my plain wrapper Baby"
I agree. And from my favorite album of theirs, the second album, from 1973z
This is new romantic or new wave music at its finest.
I love More Than This. Always seems like ideal for wake up in a positive way!
This is the first song on the Avalon album and keeps you in that beautiful trance until the very end. I really hope, if not both, at least Amber gives the whole album a listen. Like she said, she doesn't know why, but I know she'll get it and find a hidden gem.
Brings back great times. Roxy Music never goes out of style. Ferry's solo work is also outstanding. ✌❤
You guys have done the (admittedly awesome) smooth side of Roxy Music. You would definitely dig their more rocking side, too- instances where drummer Paul Thompson and guitarist Phil Manzanera have a chance to flex their musicianly muscles- "Street Life", "Editions Of You", "The Thrill Of It All", "Mother Of Pearl", "Love Is The Drug", "Virginia Plain, "Beauty Queen", "Grey Lagoons", etc.
Both sides of the band were major influences on the new wave/ "new romantic" bands that came out of the UK in the early 80s. And yeah, they don't come any smoother than Roxy vocalist Bryan Ferry (who has had a pretty extensive solo career as well).
They were almost like two separate bands. Both versions were excellent. It would be fun to see their reaction to some of the old stuff.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I could feel at the time
There was no way of knowing
Fallen leaves in the night
Who can say where they're blowing?
As free as the wind
Hopefully learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
[Chorus]
More than this
You know there's nothing
More than this
Tell me one thing
More than this
Ooh, there's nothing
[Verse 2]
It was fun for a while
There was no way of knowing
Like a dream in the night
Who can say where we're going?
No care in the world
Maybe I'm learning
Why the sea on the tide
Has no way of turning
[Chorus]
More than this
You know there's nothing
More than this
Tell me one thing
More than this
No, there's nothing
More than this
Nothing
More than this
More than this
Nothing
A+ for smoothness on this one. I love me some Roxy Music…80’s techno music at it’s finest. Thanks 😊
Another singer you'll love is (Gino Vannelli - Wild Horses - I just want to Stop - Black Cars - Hurts to be in Love)
Love Ferry's voice. One of my favs is "The Main Thing".
Yes!
Next, please listen to “(Oh Yeah) On the Radio” The live version of this Roxy Music classic is iconic. Enjoy!
Brian Ferry is so smooth he can even pull off wearing a bow tie with a leather jacket , great reaction 🇬🇧👍
Saw Roxy Music live once and Bryan Ferry solo twice and I have been fortunate enough to have met him on 3 different occasions while he was on holiday in my country. Bryan Ferry is one of those rare people (like Deep Purple's Ian Gillan) whom you do not feel disappointed when you meet them. Great reaction guys!!
Yea! Was hoping you guys would do this one! My Fav from them.... this is the song that made me buy the CD! :) Thanks for the Reaction, You Guys! :) PS- Hope You Don't Stay Sad for Too Long, Amber! :)
The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way... Classic.
I am so glad you got to hear this one by Roxy Music. They played this on MTV in the early 80's all the time. This was truly New Wave.
There is no doubt in my mind , one of the most beautiful voices ever!! I love Bryan Ferry & I love his music with Roxy Music! Everyone who hears his voice just wants to listen to more & more! ♥️
Lovely song that never got off the Bubbling Under chart. 10,000 Maniacs, with new lead singer Mary Ramsey, did their own version in 1997, which finally got the song into the Top 40.
I love the 10000 Maniacs cover. At the time, didn't know it was a cover. I really like the original, too, but the Maniacs' version is my favorite.
It was a top 10 hit in the UK . Roxy were huge in the UK.
Bryan Ferry has a voice that can do what no other singer's can and that's to make you cry because you want to go to that world where the voice comes from, a world of complete peace and love, but you know you never can. I think that's especially true for the his song Zamba. His voice is so soft an airy yet so full of emotion. Yes Roxy Music has some different styles. The earlier albums influenced the punk and new wave genres, the later are more of what you heard here with Ferry's silky voice. Biggest Hits Roxy Music: Virginia Plain, Love Is The Drug, My Only Love, Dance Away, Oh Yeah. Bryan Ferry: Let's Stick Together, Slave To Love, Don't Stop The Dance.
Pleased that you got to this one. I think this is their best song. He's smooth as silk on this track.
Oh, I looooove this song! OK, in fairness, I love a lot of Roxy Music's songs. 😄 But this one in particular brings back memories. I'd just finished college, didn't know what I was going to do with my life, wasn't in a relationship, and well, just felt a little frantic inside. My family and I were in Maine that summer and I remember listening to a mixed tape on my Walkman as I walked along the beach. I walked out to the end of jetty and sat down on the rocks to watch the ocean do it's thing. And this song came on. It's one of those times in life where you just feel all your senses connecting to the moment at hand and a calm waves over you as gently as Ferry's voice is in this song. I just got this incredible sense that things were going to come together and be OK if I just accepted what came my way. I'll never forget that. They did, happily, and even now, LOTS of years later, this song brings back that very special moment in my life and takes me there again. Thank you for this lovely journey of rememberance. ❤
A time and a place and a song, always the best memories. ✌️
Timeless. Avalon is a fantastic album. `The Main Thing,` would be my favourite track, but love it all.
The early Roxy albums are nothing like the later ones. Between ' Manifesto ' and ' Flesh and Blood ' it was as if they changed to Roxy 2.0 They later ones are good , but .......... the first 3 albums were extraordinary , experimental and unique works of art. Most people who have only heard the hits off Avalon and Flesh and Blood would be shocked by the original Roxy.
Their best one... this album is usually found on lists over the 100 bests pop music albums ever produced.
Roxy Music "Love Is The Drug"...Nuff Said.
Didn't Grace Jones do a cover of that tune?
Yay. You came back to Roxy Music again. Yes!! Next try "Love is the Drug".
One of the most perfect and beautiful albums ever recorded, as were Ferry's immediate follow up records. Darkly lit, endlessly sad and romantic. Phil Manzanera's lovely, melancholic little five note solo/goodbye lick (around 5:44, your video time) breaks my heart every time I hear it. So many guitarists could benefit from studying how much emotion and musicality can be expressed in so few notes. Slick record for sure, but I think it is deeper than that. Listening to the entire Avalon album is like tripping through a street-lit night just as dusk is breaking into something darker and anticipating meeting the love of your life. I have a lot of favourite albums, but Avalon is the one that always makes me fall in love with the city again, even with all of its enthralling illusions and broken promises.
I think this is the most played, top of my 80s playlist -- just gorgeous, poignant and haunting!❤❤❤❤ Thank you!!!
Bryan Ferry is so cool. He's always had his own style. Perfect hair, best clothes...and that unique voice.
He's kind of James Bond-like!
Their early albums with Brian Eno are my favs but "Love Is The rug" was their most popular single. They didn't do covers but their live versions of John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and Neil Young's "Like A Hurricane" are incredible.
Yes, the first two were IT for me
one of the most beautiful songs ever. especially that instrumental outro, Magic. 1
Always loved the instrumental break at the end of this song...Ferry sells it with true emotion.. Roxy Music...what a band ..lt is not easy listening it's emotional listening.❤
It was in the movie Lost in Translation with Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Roxy Music was a great time in music
I love Roxy music but this one is a gem 🖤
A MUST HEAR 60's classic,, Smith "Baby It's You"
I saw him in 2017, he was 72 years old and hit every damn note in every song they played.
I saw him at the Greek. Between the cologne and perfume, it was the best smelling concert I’ve ever been to. One of the best sounding concerts as well. You could hear every instrument at all times with perfect sound levels.
BOTH ENDS BURNING!!!! just some more rocking Roxy Music suggestions. 'Virginia Plain" ," If there is something ' "Remake/ Remodel" oh.....gee...so many....but, definitely ,Both Ends Burning....killer sax with Bryan's amazing vocals
For sure!
Love this song. I played this album so many times. ... It's about time you reacted to a solo Joe Bonamassa for the first time. It's been almost 2 years since you discovered him with Beth Hart.
I’m a real 60’s music person, but this song from the early 80’s has been of my favorite songs since it came out.
FINALLY! Roxy Music's Avalon album is on my ten albums I can't live without list. The instruments are beautifully used, not overpowering, but complimenting each other. Grand and rich.
‘If there is something ‘off the first record is a Roxy must. Been a fan since their beginning. Nobody looked like them & nobody sounded like them. Very influential band. Named my dog after them.
I named my imaginary horse after them. I'm still waiting for my dad to give me a horse like he promised decades ago 😁.
If There is Something is my favorite 😊
When you're ready for more from Roxy Music, check out some of these tunes -- "The Thrill Of It All", "The Main Thing", "Love Is The Drug", "Dance Away", "Angel Eyes", and "Sea Breezes" along with many others.
This is my favorite track of theirs. So atmospheric and lush with melody and a sense of restraint.
One of the best songs ever of the one of the best band ever! I LOVE IT! GREAT REACTION, GUYS!
Love is the Drug needs to be your next one so that you get to hear their cool side. A few more of my favorites are their cover of John Lennon’s Jealous Guy, Take a Chance With Me, To Turn You On, Dance Away, Same Old Scene, and Oh Yeah.
Bryan Ferry also had a successful solo career. You might want to start with Slave to Love or Kiss and Tell.
A BANGER,, The Romantics "What I Like About You" (Official Music Video)
Agreed. Been asking for that one.
@@The80sCat Me too,, for probably a year now,, but maybe I'm the black sheep of the family & I just don't know it 🤪
The Flaming Lips "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" & "Do You Realize"
I've loved this great song since the video first hit MTV. Here is my parody of it, entitled "Mormon Bris":
I concealed at the time
That the moyl was a Mormon
Failing plans, nothing right
Couldn't find cousin Norman
At three it transpired
Well, close to two-ish
But the moyl that we hired
Was not even Jewish
Mormon bris, you know we're having
Mormon bris, faulty planning
Mormon bris, ooh farklempting
It went fine all the while
This un-kosher incision
Not a seam out of line
Though against our religion
Don't care anymore
Moyl is a Mormon
Circumcision with style
That dazzled the doorman
Mormon bris, almost misfortune
Mormon bris, errant foreskin
Mormon bris, just don't tell them
Mormon bris, bluff this
Mormon bris
Mormon bris, bupkis
"The Thrill of it All" off the Country Life album is my go to song by Roxy Music !
Fantastic song one of my fav's for sure, I love early Roxy Music I listen to that Album at least once every 2 weeks. Both end's Burning is a fav aswell.
Yes!!!
Whenever I hear a Roxy Music song I’m 23 again………
I remember when it played on the radio... and strangely, I rediscovered it with my youngest daughter while we were seeing "Lost in Translation" a few years ago. She fell in love with it and started to listen to Roxy Music's whole catalogue. 😄
Early (1972-75) Roxy Music was really creative - Like nothing else - Virginia Plain, All I Want is You, Pyjarmarama and Streetlife are radically different
Fantastic stuff, with Brian Eno as well...just magic! listen to his early stuff all the time!
The movie Lost In Translation comes to mind from hearing this, great film.
Bill Murray does a great rendition of this song in Lost in Translation.
Beautiful song, love the melody! 🎶🎸🎷🎹🎺🪈🎶♥️♥️
Best song on one of my favorite albums of all time. Beautiful music, haunted lyrics of Love and Loss and production values that still shine after over 40 years.
Awesome :) Roxy Music is one of my 2 or 3 favorite bands.
“Love Is The Drug” is their US rock hit-they were huge in the UK, cult following here. For the next smooth one, “Jealous Guy” (John Lennon song). It’s beautifully heartbreaking.
Amber’s right, Bryan Ferry has that sad role down pat.
Double -“Captain of her heart” has a similar vibe to me. Check it out.
You should check out some Roxy Music from the early 70's. It's a uniquely different sound. This is from the 80's and it has a more contemporary and smooth sound compared to their earlier music. A few suggestions: Ladytron, Beauty queen, Amazona, The thrill of it all, Love is the drug, Both ends burning and...Re make Re model if you dare! There are many more greats, but these will give you an overall impression of their original sound from 1972-1975. The lead singer, Bryan Ferry also has an extensive solo career. Definitely worth checking that out as well.
Roxy Music is in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame for a reason. Great 80s band!
Please do Van Halen "When It's Love". Trust me, it is right up your alley. Vocals are amazing.
No, that was done by Van Hagar.
@@allengator1914still a great song
@@allengator1914 The better vocalist.
They started in the 70’s as a much more radical band. Both them and David Bowie invented Glam Rock. Their early stuff is very different and kind of disturbing. One of their tunes is about an inflatable sex doll! Their first four albums were ground breaking. They changed rock/pop music. As a good example is the track “Mother of Pearl”. You’ve been warned it’s “different”
I blew up your body. But you blew my mind. Classic.
This is such a great song. Hearing it never gets old.
I love, love, love this song
Great stuff guys, I remembered you liked Avalon and you have reacted to another good one by them, so smooth and melodic. Also time for some more Dire Straits, like 'Skateaway' or 'Private Investigation'-Thanks-Colin Ward
