If you are listening carefully to the lyrics, you will hear Andy describing the plane that carried the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. Hence the name of the song, is the name of the airplane Enola Gay. Although the song is quite upbeat, it's telling a very sombre story.
enola gay was the pilots mothers name , the subject is simple , japan were warned , they ignored , and thousands of american men did`nt have to loose their life`s
you have to step into the mental world of japan at that time, you would be willing pilot a plane to your death , send the biggest battleship on a one way trip, america had one course to stop the bloodshed in one act , it two as the japanese even after the first did not want to surrender
"Is mother proud of little boy today?" A double meaning: Enola Gay was also the name of the pilot's mother, and Little Boy was also the name of the bomb.
Early 1979 i was 15 and i paid 25 pence to see some bands in the basement of the imperial Hotel in Blackpool UK 🇬🇧.. 2 of the bands were OMD and JOY DIVISION.. 25 pence.. ohh they were happy day's
hi..................john wanted to know if i know you from Blackpool................i was fifteen at the time too.................my full name is john .Dearie.
Enola Gay was the name of the plane, named for the pilot's mother. The bomb they dropped was called "Little Boy". Three days later Nagasaki was bombed...they named that bomb "Fat Man". The 'kiss' they referred to in the song I suspect was the nuclear fallout...aka radiation burn/poisoning that anyone in the vicinity of the blast suffered if they didn't immediately die in the initial blast. Such a happy sounding tune, very dark subject matter. A lot of 80's music was about the potential of WW3 happening in our lifetime. Thanx for playing that song...never gets old!
As several people have mentioned, Enola Gay was the plane that dropped the bomb on Hiroshima, but the bomb itself was called Little Boy and this is also referenced in the lyrics
And the pilot had chosen the name of the plane. Enola Gay was the name of his mother. Weird way to pay tribute to your mother ... Please do Maid of Orleans next. Another song with a historical context. Possibly my favourite OMD song, if you can stomach the intro.

I would also recommend 'Joan of Arc' or 'Joan Of Arc - Maid Of Orleans', the latter being my favourite of the 2 tracks! But both were great songs in their own rights and still are too! Hope you listen to them and enjoy too.
Seconded! I'm named after Jeanne D'Arc (aka Joan Of Arc) and have a picture of her on the wall. I ♥ Maid of Orleans but you have to get past the weird synth sounds of the first 35 seconds (which I still love because it's OMD!). Maid of Orleans is the song I used to learn how to play the drums - fabulous drum part but it's a great song overall. I love OMD 🥰
OMD has like 15 amazing songs! This is a band that should be praised for their sound! Enola Gay dropped the ABomb. They said it’s extremely hard to play is song in Japan because all the people are dancing and it’s an extremely sad song lyrically
We just called them OMD, since Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is so long. This 1980 song was one of the first I heard by them, and they entered the charts at the same time as two other major synth pop bands, Depeche Mode and Human League, did, so I always associate the three together. In my mind, this song goes with Depeche Mode's 1981 "New Life."
I was just a kid when i first dance to this song in a disco. Still love it after 40 years 🖤 This song and "Electricity" are my favorite tunes from this band. Cheers from Greece! 🍺
OMD are an amazing band. You need to listen to Maid of Orleans, Souvenir, Electricity, Messages, Joan of Arc, Talking Loud and Clear, the list goes on. Top music
The keyboards on this song are epic. There's that wonderful riff that is repeated throughout the song but underneath that is a keyboard line that repeats a slightly ominous sequence of notes, it produces a tension that says this is not just some happy disco song. Such an interesting song, both lyrically and musically.
OMD , must hear song Maid of Orleans for the 80's haunting melody pure classic, OMD 90's Pandora's Box & Sailing on the seven seas, again pure classics.
Such a great group! They're still around after 40 years and still making great music. I absolutely love them! Thank you for that trip down memory lane.

OMD were part of that Britsynthania movement of the early 80s along with the likes of Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, Ultravox, Duran Duran,Blancmange and many more, which were all inspired by Kraftwerk, can I suggest Fade To Grey by Visage which for me is a classic, anybody agree?
I have the best of OMD and play it constantly my old friend had "Joan of Arc" played at her funeral not a dry eye in the room, I must say "(Forever) Live and Die" is one of my favourites....
OMD is one of my favorite groups from the 80’s. Another group you should definitely check from the 80s is the Psychedelic Furs. I don’t think you have yet. They have a number of good songs, The Ghost in You, Heartbreak Beat and Pretty in Pink from the movie of the same name.
I think this is the song that gave Howard Jones faith that there is space for music artists like him that loved playing the piano. So synth pop music was the direction for him. Such a cool song, has always been my fav from them.
Yep, for sure. OMD were trailblazers with the new tech sounds. Gordon Deppe, of SPOONS (Canadian band, emerged early 80s) changed his whole outlook and sound of the band after seeing OMD in an early Toronto gig.
I loved OMD back in the early 80's and still love some of their best songs now... Electricity, Souvenir, Joan of arc, Maid of Orleans, Talking loud and clear! These were my favourites with Enola gay as well! 😍❤️👍🇬🇧

It's an anti-war song, at heart. The cold war (between USSR and USA) concerned younger generations well into the 80s. Some artists expressed it in songs like this. Very cool band, pioneers of electronic music. Their song 'Joan of Arc' is well worth checking out, also their song 'Souvenir' which is probably one of the most beautiful sounding synthesizer songs of the 80s

OMD are still going strong today, Have a listen to Electricity which is very apt in the current clumate, other songs are, Messages, Tesla Girls and Joan of Arc plus many more
Pronouncing their name can be hard. You guys - almost - got it. Their full name is "Orchestral (sounded out as ôrˈkestr(ə)l ) Maneuvers in the Dark". Having said that, back in the day they were simply know as "OMD". 😊
@@Paladin70 They pronounced as if it simply sounds like orchestra with an L sound on the end. This is incorrect. When you pronounce the word Orchestra, the emphasis is on the "Orc" sound. With Orchestral the emphasis is on the "Kesteral" sound. Or-kesteral. I would suggest you TH-cam videos on how to pronounce these are to two different words.
@@darcyferrier775 “these to two different words”? Really? What does that even mean? Why not throw in the other form also and say, “these to too two different words”??? I don’t get what you were trying to say with “to two” but maybe I’m missing something.
Rush has a song with similar content but, of course, a very different sound. It's called "Manhattan Project" from their 1985 album, "Power Windows". Remember, the cold war was still on in the mid-'80s and the spectre of nuclear war was still on the minds of many.
Jay & Amber you’ll love Rickie Lee Jones’ “Danny’s All Star Joint”!!! Cool bass intro for Jay, cool vocals/lyrics, and swingin’ horn jam the last minute for Amber!!!!
An excellent techno/new wave band from the 80's. Love this song. OMD has a great sound and you should go down this rabbit hole some more - "Secret", "Dreaming", "Electricity". just to name a few.
More commonly known as OMD. My friend went to see them a couple of nights ago and they are still sounding fantastic. My 80s nostalgia keeps going as I'm off to see Heaven 17 in November and also hoping to book to see Shalamar 🙂
"Enola Gay" is an anti-war song by the English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), and the only single taken from their second studio album Organisation (1980). Written by lead vocalist and bassist Andy McCluskey, it addresses the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by the aircraft Enola Gay on 6 August 1945, toward the conclusion of World War II. As is typical of early OMD singles, the song features a melodic synthesizer break instead of a sung chorus.
My wife and I have one fun memorie of OMD. We met in a bar early 80's where they were playing Talking loud and clear by OMD. At first glance our eyes met, softly playing OMD in the background. It was love at first sight. Although it's a little bit of a corny song it became our song, special thing is that the song is about love playing at the moment we fell in love. It also shows another more playful side of OMD. So you are loving the 80's synth pop? This man in fact is the pioneer of synthpop, Gary Numan started his sound late 70's people found it weird because they never heard synthesizers like that and called it a one day fly, history shows different synths rule. Other pioneers from the late 70's early 80's are Kraftwerk from their track autobahn to The Model, all very special. I recommend starting with autobahn that's typically Kraftwerk and then try The Model it will surprise you. Kraftwerk can be dark but also very sunny. Love Thomas
Continuing the theme, there's a dark comedy on the theme of nuclear war, featuring the inimitable Peter Sellers in three roles: "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb". It's brilliant, very funny, and quite sobering all at once. Highly recommended.
Went to see OMD at the Royal Albert Hall last year, amazing concert. Videos can be found on TH-cam. 😉 Andy McCluskey is an astonishing performer. Walking On the Milky Way, Sailing On the Seven Seas, Electricity, If You Leave, So In Love, Call My Name.
One of the many things I love about synth pop, new wave, & dark wave are the fantastic melodies. This song is no exception. Speaking of, i have a Song suggestion: Pet Shop Boys “Suburbia (The Full Horror)” My favorite PSB song!

What do you mean they “almost” got it? That’s exactly how they said it. 🙄🙄🙄WTF??
@@Paladin70 They pronounced as if it simply sounds like orchestra with an L sound on the end.
This is incorrect.
When you pronounce the word Orchestra, the emphasis is on the "Orc" sound.
With Orchestral the emphasis is on the "Kesteral" sound. Or-kesteral.
I would suggest you TH-cam videos on how to pronounce these are to two different words.
@@darcyferrier775
“these to two different words”?
Really? What does that even mean? Why not throw in the other form also and say, “these to too two different words”??? I don’t get what you were trying to say with “to two” but maybe I’m missing something.
@@Paladin70no, he's right it's orkest(rhymes with chest or best?) ral not orkistral.

“He” is a “she” and she explained it much better than you a day ago, so I’m not sure why you even showed up. 😁
Try “Classical Gas” by Mason Williams! Awesome instrumental from ‘68!!🤘🔥
I haven't heard them do instrumentals as of yet, but that is a good one.👍
I agree. I had the 45 single and played it constantly. Love the song.
@@donnakubiski5572 I still have that 45 single!.
The threat of nukes was real in the eighties. You had to be there and not in diapers to understand.
My favorite song of OMD is "Talking loud and clear" .... listen to that song ... you'll like I think
“Tesla Girls” is a must
No. No. No. 😉😎✌🏽 (it’s my favorite OMD song, btw)
Commonly referred to as O.M.D,
The Enola Gay was of the plane that dropped the A bomb on Hiroshima.
No way!!! Was sat listening to this this afternoon and thought it’d be great if you both reacted to this, weird! 😮
Great new wave, synth pop band. 👏
1980s synth pop is a great scene to go and listen to, the sounds they created on their early synth keyboards were outstand
Another three songs that talk about war in the 80's: State of the Nation by Industry, Russians by Sting and Forever Young by Alphaville
My favorite OMD song. So sad.
Love
Thomas
Kraftwerk are German, that's why the record is called Autobahn which means Highway or in England, Motorway.
I love Genetic Engineering with its Speak and Spell voice and Maid of Orleans my two real favourites of OMD
I saw them open for Depeche Mode on the Music for the Masses tour. Best concert I’ve ever been to from start to finish.
Great synth pop band! Forever live and die is a great track of theirs!
OMD a band you should go down the rabbit hole great band and won’t be disappointed
One of the many things I love about synth pop, new wave, & dark wave are the fantastic melodies. This song is no exception.
Speaking of, i have a Song suggestion:
Pet Shop Boys “Suburbia (The Full Horror)”
