Talk Talk is one of the most underrated bands of all time, and Mark Hollis's voice should be up there with the greatest of all time. I hope you continue to dive down this rabbit hole, as there are SO MANY great Talk Talk Songs. "Life's What You Make It" is phenomenal just for the piano, "Such a Shame" is brilliant, and so is "Living In Another World". My all time favorite, however, is the live version of "Tomorrow Started". It's one of the most heart-rending vocal performances I've ever heard. Mark's voice drips like honey, and I lament the fact that he's not a household name. RIP Mark Hollis. Thanks for reacting!!

Such an epic 80s masterpiece. Absolutely still blown away every time I hear it. So many great memories associated with this song. I get transported back to my college dorm room and the amazing sense of freedom and independence I felt living away from my home and family for the first time. I was exposed to such a huge amount of new experiences which included a tidal wave of all new sounding music from new bands never before heard from including this song and artist. The early 80s was an amazing time to be coming of age and being part of the new wave in music, particularly the bands and artists out of the UK. Such a vibrant and exciting time for music. I love watching when you guys hear early to mid 80s British music. Keep going down that rabbit hole because it’s a fun journey!

Same! Was in high school and college during the 80s and it may have really been the last era of real youthful innocence - before the advent of the Internet.
80s Pop radio - which played EVERYTHING from British New Wave to Michael Jackson to Wham to New Order to Depeche Mode to Kenny Rogers.
In college (entered in 83)…i discovered Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet and Tears for Fears and The Smiths and Paul Young and Talk Talk and Naked Eyes and The Jam and then The Style Council and English Beat and…and …and …just…an amazing time for the explosion of NEW sounds. Thank you so much for your reaction to Talk Talk “It’s My Life”. I agree with everyone who has stated that Talk Talk is underrated. I listen to their music everyday. Mark Hollis has one of the most beautiful voices in music. I was devastated when he passed. It is wonderful that you have reacted to them and this means more people will want to listen to more Talk Talk. My favorites are “Such a Shame”, “Dum Dum Girl” and “Renee”. RIP Mark Hollis ❤️

I've noted this before but what you are hearing here in this song (and album) is Talk Talk taking leave of 80's synth pop and moving into a whole new realm of musical experimentation. I would argue that they actually came to be one of the best progressive rock - in the truest sense of the term - bands of the late 80's and early 90's. The lyrics, the arrangements, and the production on their later albums are simply excellent, beautiful works of art.

Takes me back to me at 13... thanks for sharing. What an amazing song.
Most of the new wave music was quite bombastic, this promoted the reaction from bands like the Smiths. "The music they constantly play says nothing to me about my life" The one New Wave band who bucked that trend was Talk Talk, Mark's voice and lyrics juxtaposed the music fantastically.
Duran Duran singing about women called Rio. Mark singing about the angst of life.

Talk Talk we’re such a great band - amazing songs. There were a load of British bands in the 80s and early 90s who straddled pop and a more indie sound to create unique styles of their own. Check out The Lightning Seeds (“Marvellous”, “Pure”, “Life Of Riley” are great places to start), Prefab Sprout (yes, really! “The King Of Rock And Roll”, “When Love Breaks Down”, “Faron Young”, “Cars and Girls”), Aztec Camera (“Somewhere in my Heart”, “Oblivious”, “Good Morning Britain”), XTC (“Sgt Rock”, “The Mayor of Simpleton”, “Senses Working Overtime”) and a bit later Blur (“Song 2”, “Boys and Girls”, “Parklife”). All worth adding to your list!

The vibe coming from this song is unreal. The ' no doubt' version of this song is definitely not a bad cover but can never touch the epicness that is this song. But while we're on the subject that is Talk Talk. 'Such a shame' is their masterpiece for me, this one is a close second. The bronze medal would go to 'living in another world'. But overall, top class band, once in a lifetime.

"Such a Shame" by Talk Talk - Is really interesting. The song is based on a book that I believe was banned at a point. You're right Americans for the most part are infected with glass is half-full optimism, which is antithetical to many of the Smith's lyrics. There was a subculture however that connected with the Smiths. Kids who came for the synth-pop/British pop and stayed for the delightfully darker asocial and twisted themes, speaking to our coming-of-age angst
