Knew Otis years ago , he was always a real sweetheart. Why so many people have to point fingers and slander someone who created a legacy and memories of great music we ALL love is beyond me. I agree that they were the greatest male "singing group" of all time, but the Temptations were not Musicians, they were primarily vocalists! I have a problem with the designation "boy band" It diminishes the status of musicians, as a "band" is a group of musicians who play instruments along with vocalists. Earth, Wind, & Fire is a band, the Temptations are a singing group, and the Backstreet Boys are a singing group...not a "boy band!"

Personally I will never forget when he granted me an interview for radio station WONY in Oneonta, New York when he was surrounded by anxious females. Otis is still doing it in 2013 with The Temptations.

Damon Harris' "birth name" is Otis Damon Harris. I guess this is why people are confusing his "given" name with Otis Williams. Otis Williams is very much alive although I hear he isn't in good heath. They do reunion tours. I worked at subway a sandwiche shop at a truck stop in 2010 and the bus pulled in and in they walked. Old members new members. I was 52

Otis spoke very truthfully in his even handed memoir. And no one, not David, not Eddie, not Dennis or Damon Harris or any Tempt who Otis revealed less than flattering things about ever spoke up against his book publicly. In the updated version of the book, Otis wrote that Eddie simply expressed a passive aggressive bitterness toward him at their Rock Hall of Fame ceremony, but that's about it. It's because he knew that Otis told it like it was. Dennis, who is also still around, knows it too.
They were just sick of everything that was happening because they put all that effort in. they were still young, you cannot blame them for their inexperience.

Him being in charge even though he wasn't the lead singer was centered around his organizational skills (which seeing where he is today, speak for themselves) and because he was the one who secured the audition for his group. His singing blended perfectly to help create the Temptation sound- he never wanted the spotlight for himself or for any other member to hog it; which is why the group remained a unit and never became "Suchandsuch & The Temptations." All this talk about him being jealous of David and Eddie and sabotaging them is pure nonsense. Why would he sabotaged the men that helped put him where he is? Let's face it- they're popularity came from being in the group TOGETHER! David Ruffin was already a solo recording artists before he became a temp but didn't make it big. Eddie and Paul quit the music business and moved back to Alabama when the Primes disbanded. Otis remained in Detroit and kept plugging away but needed better singers. None of them would have made it big without each other. David replacing Al, created the "Classic 5 Lineup" (not the original) David started doing drugs, missing meetings, rehearsals, recording sessions and Performances. So he was fired- not pushed out because of jealousy. It was a group decision- meaning even though he didn't want to, Eddie voted to fire David for the good of the group. By the time David was fired, the four of them had been together for over 8 years- anyone can see why he didn't want to give up just yet considering how far they had come. At the end of the day, the proof is in the pudding. Though they had the talent, neither David, Eddie nor even Dennis had Otis' work ethic and that's really what solidifies success in the business- even more than how well you sing. Otis is not a phenomenal soloist but he is a good singer and well respected in the music community. Each story ended badly for the Temps EXEPT for Otis- of course he's had his own share of troubles. His mother and father died young, his step father, HIS SON and of course he watched each of the Temps die. (And their replacements) But he's still going strong. I think the jealousy is directed toward him- not coming from him.

Motown had invited Jimmy to join the Tempts after he left the army, but he wanted a solo career, so he sent David instead. There was no vacancy for David at the time, so he followed the Tempts around becoming their drummer, until Al Bryant either left or was fired, either way David replaced Bryant............And the rest they say is history
And im just saying that they kinda did make the group great, because without them Otis wouldnt have had a group and thus never would have approached Blue, thus causing the Temptations to never meet and come together.
Otis is the only surviving member of the original line up. When David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks went their own way there were two Temptations groups working and touring the world at the same time. Dennis EDWARDS came from the contours and took over the tenor role when David was fired.

this woman should have done some research. If she had, she would have known that "call and response," was a carry-over from the African musical genre. It was brought to American by the African slaves and became a part of the musical legacy of the Black Church. This woman was not prepared for this interview. By the same token, Otis should have done a little response before putting "call and response" in his book if he could not define it.

+David Henry..........Jimmy Ruffin, (David's older brother) was the person who told David Ruffin that the Tempts were looking for a tenor for the group. Motown had invited Jimmy to join the Tempts after he left the army, but he wanted a solo career, so he sent David instead. There was no vacancy for David at the time, so he followed the Tempts around becoming their drummer, until Al Bryant either left or was fired, either way David replaced Bryant............And the rest they say is history

Otis is the only surviving member of the original line up. When David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks went their own way there were two Temptations groups working and touring the world at the same time. Dennis EDWARDS came from the contours and took over the tenor role when David was fired.

Yes I bought a copy of Tony Turner's book. As you say he really sensationalized things and got down and dirty when it came the drug addictions of David, Dennis and even Eddie. It's sad but I tend to believe that part of his book.

this woman should have done some research. If she had, she would have known that "call and response," was a carry-over from the African musical genre. It was brought to American by the African slaves and became a part of the musical legacy of the Black Church. This woman was not prepared for this interview. By the same token, Otis should have done a little response before putting "call and response" in his book if he could not define it.
