I think that Red is a masterpiece album because it encompasses the whole spectrum, quite possibly better than any of her other albums. I'm trying my best :) But I totally get that. I love RED but I can't really listen to it for a prolonged amount of time. I listen to mainly the slower, more somber tracks and then I'm done 😳 Gotta blast rep now
Gosh, Red, the memories of Red when it first came out, it came out right when I started my freshmen year in high school and my love for Taylor was growing. I actually brought the CD at my local target and played it until the CS broke (literally lol). What I love about the album is the aesthetic building the bridge of country music, indie rock and pop music, as well as the coming of age lyrics that features regrets, loneliness, celebrating our youth, loss and self reflection, especially considering I was starting high school, having deep regrets what I did and didn’t do in middle school and starting a journey of who I was becoming as a teenager. Also the album packaging and promo started my love for hipster fashion (even doe I hate hipsters for their association with gentrification) My favorite tracks I knew you were trouble Everything changed All too well Begin again We are never ever ever getting back together 22 Red
In my opinion RED isn't a Country record or a Pop record. RED stayed in grey area between those genres and other sub genres that she mixed it for. And why it's still remain of her great record? Cause the unique production & the masterpiece lyrics are the reason. We all know Taylor always do this experimental stuff since the beginning of her career. Yeah it's very risky move but she did a great job with every single experiments. In the terms of quality, I still think RED is her best album. Cause in this record we got all the things we need in an Album. folklore probably her 2nd best Album ever, cause this album have the masterpiece lyrics that can compete with RED alongside with the uniqueness itself such as melancholy production, the melody etc. But the problem is the tempo of folklore is too melow and not everyone likes that. Well these two records are enough to describe what Taylor is. She has known as a really great songwriter and a story teller since the beginning.
Very nice point! I agree, even though "folklore" released months ago, I really JUST got into it. I couldn't for the longest time because it was very mellow, but now I'm starting to really appreciate it.
This Channel is teaching me sooo much about the pop world. As an upcoming R&B/Pop artist myself, I'm taking pieces of wisdom from you. Thanks so much for your content man! Hopefully one day I have a video about my career on your Channel (a boy can dream anyway lol).
Yes, I completely agree with everything you said. Red is super important to me bc it’s the first Taylor era I was a swiftie for, but I also think it was the first taste of what to come for Folklore. I think people who are listening to Taylor for the first time with Folklore would also love Red. I know it was criticized for lacking cohesion at the time, but I think it just has an incredible range tied together by strong, “red” emotions. It’ll always be my favorite album of Taylor’s.
I keep seeing the "folklore" comparisons popping up and it's not something I really thought about until now, but you're so right! "RED" very much, in a way, was a "folklore" 'lite" so to speak.
first album I ever bought on itunes ahh. Really gives me 6th grade fall vibes. after that I remember how big she was right before 1989 when I listened to the yahoo livestream before shake it off which made me so excited and she immediately blew the world up with that era
Wow! I just LOVE hearing everyone's stories about the first time they heard certain songs and the memories they have associated with them. Thank you for sharing!
When Red is released, I know it’s a preparation for Taylor’s next move. She explored different sounds on that album and slightly changed her image so the change to 1989 would not be so weird or drastic to alienate her fans. After all the albums she released, Red is still my fave one.
Rewatching this video because the news that Ms. Swift dropped yesterday that her next Taylor's Version will be "Red." Which will be released November 19th, 2021.
Red was definitely a genre in itself lol It encompassed not only country and pop. It had elements of dub, disco, rock, and indie. It literally could fit anywhere. It’s very much a gem to this date. She really shined as a performer during the tours of that era, as well. And that’s was the time she really started doing her features where she would bring guest artists and also the acoustic performances 🙂
I believe Speak Now is also a solid album with a concept. It wad a collection of songs that serves as a message or letter to either a past lover, current lover, friends, family and acquaintances.
RED was the first era i follow from the beginning to end, i discover her with "You belong with me" loved her and remain with "Speak Now", there was something magical about her realeasing promo single track, each songs were different to the previous one (at the time, if i remember correctly, she released "State of grace, RED and I Knew You Were Trouble" as promo track) and wow, the first time i heard IKYWT i was in shock i never expected from her to implement dubstep sound in her music! All Too Well was my jam, the part when she said "And it smells like me" always got me in some way, she sang it with such pain and melancholy in her voice, the imagery in her booklet are very good too! Honestly i feel that her voice it suits better with those kinda of instruments even if i still think that with 1989 e other albums after that she improve a lot lyrically, and Folklore is the proof of that. I get the correlation between Folklore and RED, the first is like winter and the second one is like autumn, they complement each other so well! I honestly can't wait to see what she has in mind with her next project cause it will certainly be different.
Love your content and analysis and I will never tire of saying that. I love you described the single vs album, which is a creative/business decision that boosts the interest in her as an artist (Which I know thanks to your analysis of reputation! :)))) ) Red is one of my favourites by Taylor (up there with Rep and folklore), and what puts it there is that, despite including elements of pop, it feels timeless to me. The music itself isn't wrapped up in trends, the story-telling is dream-worthy (as always with Tay), and the situations described are pretty much universal.
So true about the “false start” lead singles! I’ve always said that to friends who have been skeptical of listening to a full Taylor album based on some of her singles alone. Also to me Red is such a monumental album because it’s not only so transitional from a genre perspective but a personal/songwriting perspective which I think you touched on a bit. The songwriting on this album is some of the best and most confessional of her career and definitely showcased her maturity. As for the pop or country question, I don’t think this should be categorised as a country record and I do think it leans more towards pop (especially with WANEGBT, IKYWT, and 22) but I also think she really embraced an indie sound and aesthetic for this album which helped the whole indie/hipster look go mainstream (ironically, and for better or for worse) at the time. Pitchfork called Sad Beautiful Tragic “Taylor on the verge of signing to 4AD”. I could talk about this masterpiece for hours ❤️ thanks for the video!
That's why I love Taylor Swift. Her ability for storytelling through songwriting is AMAZING. I remember when I was heartbroken, I listened to All Too Well, Back To December, exile.... I cried to it because she's EXCELLENT at channeling her emotions in storytelling and songwriting. Kudos to you, Taylor. I love you!
I love all the songs in this album except for the singles, “Begin again” and “all to well” are beautiful gems that deserve every once of love, “state of Grace” is an amazing intro, the tittle track is heartfelt and catchy, “everything has changed is a charming duet as Taylor swift and Ed switch vocals, “holy ground” and “stay stay stay” are underrated gems and “the lucky one is one of my personal favorites. I find the singles to be so annoying AF, like “I knew you were trouble” and “weEEEEE are never getting back together” I still hate them with every ounce of my being “22” is tolerable and cheeky. Overall this album is beautiful and amazing, I wished that all the tracks were mature tho.
I definitely love the album tracks more than the singles. I love "State of Grace". I think it's simply a stunning intro, and likely her best she's put out.
But I think that's the charm, it was weird sonically. Comparing to all of her albums RED just sounds so jumbled and confused and every song are distinct from one another.
6:42 THIS IS SO TRUE! As a longtime TS fan, I have been very disappointed with her choice of lead singles. “I Did Something Bad” should have been the lead off for Rep and “Cruel Summer” should have been the lead off Lover
I still can't get over the fact that she released an 80's pop sound based record in 2014, and all the other mainstream popstars are doing that just NOW. In 2021. ... She was literally seven years ahead of everyone else. What the fuck
I think Speak Now introduced elements of the new videography & curiosity of other genres that led us to Red, too-+ the experience of writing the whole album herself allowed her to step into Res confident in every songwriting choice she made, whether alone or collaboratively
To your question of whether Red is a Country or Pop record, I wonder if it's meant to be blurred. Building upon the idea that she was trying to convey all the different emotions one feels when they have their heart broken, blurring genre lines was necessary in order to help elevate each emotion. Side Note: The Lucky One is one of my favorite songs by her
My favorite album is Red. It shows an amazing version of adulthood and she captures that perfectly and the versatile genre is genius. Songs like Stay Stay Stay, All Too Well, I Almost Do, I Knew You Were Trouble are all different genres but tie so well. I would say that Red is my best and most favorite album.
Loved this, thank you so much for sharing!! I’ve always wondered why she picked such (IMO) bad singles for her albums lol, so thanks for talking about that!
I hate to add to your long list of video ideas, but could you please do videos on: How 1989 changed Taylor Swift's career The massive success of Lorde's "Melodrama" Why Katy Perry's "Smile" underperformed.
I appreciate you being respectful, so thank you! 😊 ❤️ I probably won't do a video on "Smile" until the era is closER to being over, as we still don't have the full scope or what could happen.
I think red was a phenomenal change for taylor in terms of everything. she changed her look from curls to straight hair, her style, her sound which became more pop than ever.
This album has some of her best songs. It has some truly instant classics like State of Grace and Holy Ground and All Too Well. It is her transition between country and pop and just ends up sounding like timeless rock.
Red's anniversary was a couple days ago. This era was very interesting! It's my least favorite album by her, but I love how much of an impact it had on music industry. Truly one of her most iconic albums. My favorite tracks: Red I Knew You Were Trouble We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together The Last Time Begin Again
if you’re looking for any ideas I think it be really cool to do a video on if wonder by Shawn Mendes flopped , Miley Cyrus is constant reinvention and if plastic hearts was a success just off the top of my head
No way. Folklore is way more superior than Red. Arrangements on Red sometimes don't suit lyrics, like The Lucky One and Holy Ground. Folklore has better lyrics and no problems with sound.
red is her best work imo! thanks for this video-it is so good! also please please please do a video about the success of Lady Gaga's 2nd album, Born This Way! i know myself and many monsters would love to see a video like this as BTW has a special place in many monsters and casual listeners' hearts! thanks sm
I disagree with the first minute statement. Taylor always had a central theme for her albums except for Debut. Fearless focuses on the true meaning of the word, “Fearless”. Even though that’s an odd concept, I would use Speak Now to fully prove my point. Speak Now’s concept is speaking up through songs. Taylor used the concept of “speaking through songs” by making every song a letter to her loved ones. So I disagree with first minute statement. Great analysis though. Keep doing this.
I don’t know how to explain Red. This was the last album I got around to listening to by Taylor. But now that I’m older, I’m glad I didn’t hear it until a few months ago. She really captured all the different emotions and fears around love. I can’t even put it into words. That’s how good she is. I always cry over at least one song whenever I listen. I still can’t believe she wrote All Too Well. I love Begin Again. Red is just incredible. Starlight is so good. Treacherous and State of Grace.. wow. I could go on and on about this album. It really is special and I can’t believe how underrated it seems to be.
For the first question, I would say because Red is Taylor's big transition record in so many ways, more mature, more relatable, first true step for her to crossover from country to pop, and the very first record that make Taylor get recognition about how great she really is as a songwriter and storyteller (shout out to All Too Well). Not to mention that her lost for Grammys Album of the Year with Red made her realize to made her second AOTY and a pop perfection, 1989. For the second question, I would say Red is a mixture, not just pop or country but both. Like, the record has a pop smash hits like We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together and I Knew You Were Trouble, but at the same time it has a beautiful and stand-out country song like Begin Again and the title track.
I’ve found a new appreciation of RED! When it was originally released, I didn’t allow myself to embrace the fullness of the album because you know, TOXIC MASCULINITY. Now that I’m 24, going to be 25, RED evokes so much emotions for me. I put myself back into the high school me mindset and it so nostalgic for me. Holy Ground, The Last Time, I Almost Do, All Too Well & RED title track I find myself repeating them daily. Given how the album has aged and how long ago it was released, but how fresh and soothing the music is, I think is a true testament to the talent of Taylor Swift.
I have some nostalgic memories with RED. I was 22. Just got married shortly, moved to England, had a baby all in the RED era. It’s special to me. ♥️ and at the time, I didn’t even know it.
I’m 17 years old now and, although I was aware of Taylor Swift as long as I can remember, Red was when I was really aware of her and then 1989 was when I started seeing her as a different type of celebrity. Not just someone famous but someone imperative to American culture
Although RED is Taylor’s most ‘pop’ country album, it still is a majorly country album with influences of a multitude of non-pop genres such as alternative, rock, alt rock etc. Most people might consider RED to be a pop record based on its pop singles WANEGBT, IKYWT and 22, given that they ultimately were the most remembered and renowned singles from the album. I agree with you in that RED was truly her first album that is built around a specific persona and aesthetic and her first in which she is able to take items from daily life and make it hers. All of her albums including the ones preceding RED are built around specific ideas and aesthetics, RED is the album where she does it for the first time in the truest sense. Overall the record feels like an emotional roller coaster, spanning all the emotions that the colour red may represent. In the prologue for RED, Taylor says “real love shines golden like starlight, and doesn’t fade or spontaneously combust. Maybe I’ll write a whole album about that kind of love if I ever find it.” Undoubtedly the ‘red’ metaphor is something that was inspired by her own life and it’s not until ‘reputation’ that she transitions from this ‘red’ phase of her life. In comes ‘gold’ a colour that represents real love to her, indicating she finally has found somebody who gives her peace, comfort and happiness like no other, a love that is really something, not just the idea of something. In the ending track of Lover, Daylight, she sings ‘I once believed love would be burning red, but it’s golden’
I think RED is definitely more of a pop album than country. The overall song structures and production feel more like pop, but the whole album has country elements

Also the album packaging and promo started my love for hipster fashion (even doe I hate hipsters for their association with gentrification)

@@popdissected4400 no problem each Taylor album always have a special place for me bc it they were/are a soundtrack to a certain period of my life
The lucky one had to move so reputation could run.
Idk why but every time I listen to the song I imagine lady Gaga
"The Lucky One" 😳 Underrated gem!
Yep mee too it is such a Remenesce of lady gaga
I agree RED is her best album. I think only evermore can compete with RED

I've been waiting for this. Thanks for doing this. I love the RED album very much.

I totally agree! "RED" definitely prefaced and set a smoother transition to "1989", and it makes me wonder if this was the intention from the start.

Talk about speak now, that show her savage side 😂
She had a feisty song here and there 😊🤚 !
The original Megan Thee Stallion ft. Taylor Swift - Savage.
I believe Speak Now is also a solid album with a concept. It wad a collection of songs that serves as a message or letter to either a past lover, current lover, friends, family and acquaintances.
You should really talk about Electra heart, or Marina in general, that would be interesting specially with the rise of alternative music nowadays
Great idea! 😊
I’ve been waiting for this one😼
purr💅💅
Yess!!! So beautifully put 💕
Love your content and analysis and I will never tire of saying that.
I love you described the single vs album, which is a creative/business decision that boosts the interest in her as an artist (Which I know thanks to your analysis of reputation! :)))) )
Red is one of my favourites by Taylor (up there with Rep and folklore), and what puts it there is that, despite including elements of pop, it feels timeless to me. The music itself isn't wrapped up in trends, the story-telling is dream-worthy (as always with Tay), and the situations described are pretty much universal.
Thank you so much!!! You're so kind! And YES, I totally agree with what you said about "RED"!
Thank you for watching, and thank you for these thoughts! Very nice points! ❤️
I love you!
YES!!! I'm right there with you!
Your videos never disappoint
Thank you so much! I appreciate it 🤗
Great video! Red and reputation are my fave albums!
Please come back soon 😢
My favorite album of all time. It consistently evokes feelings of nostalgia, comfort, autumn, and relatability. It’s just the best.
Comparing to all of her albums RED just sounds so jumbled and confused and every song are distinct from one another.
can you please post more content I am begging you
This is too real. RED is a heartbreak album
Listening to it ... takes me back 😳 😭
6:42 THIS IS SO TRUE! As a longtime TS fan, I have been very disappointed with her choice of lead singles. “I Did Something Bad” should have been the lead off for Rep and “Cruel Summer” should have been the lead off Lover
Yaay I was waiting for this
Hope you enjoyed! ❤️

I don't know how to explain this but I've always felt like RED is the album that is really defining of who Taylor Swift actually is
Yes 👏 !
I think Speak Now introduced elements of the new videography & curiosity of other genres that led us to Red, too-+ the experience of writing the whole album herself allowed her to step into Res confident in every songwriting choice she made, whether alone or collaboratively
Oooh yes, very good point!
To your question of whether Red is a Country or Pop record, I wonder if it's meant to be blurred. Building upon the idea that she was trying to convey all the different emotions one feels when they have their heart broken, blurring genre lines was necessary in order to help elevate each emotion.
Side Note: The Lucky One is one of my favorite songs by her
Whoa! That is such a smart observation! I never even thought of the genre mixing in that sense. Very neat! 😃
I love your channel!!
Thank you so much, you're so kind! I appreciate it.
She's like changing herself in brand new self at every album like wtf , She's such a smart bussinesswoman
Loved this, thank you so much for sharing!! I’ve always wondered why she picked such (IMO) bad singles for her albums lol, so thanks for talking about that!
I hate to add to your long list of video ideas, but could you please do videos on:
How 1989 changed Taylor Swift's career
The massive success of Lorde's "Melodrama"
Why Katy Perry's "Smile" underperformed.
Her top 4 albums are RED, Speak Now, 1989, & folklore😌
For me, I'd have to say "RED", "reputation", "Lover" and "folklore" 😳
This album has some of her best songs. It has some truly instant classics like State of Grace and Holy Ground and All Too Well. It is her transition between country and pop and just ends up sounding like timeless rock.
Not sure if this opinion is popular or not, but I definitely think Red is Taylor's BEST work to date 😌
If I had to say objectively which is her best, it's for sure a cross between "RED" and "folklore".
@@popdissected4400 AGREED!

😂 facts!!
No way. Folklore is way more superior than Red. Arrangements on Red sometimes don't suit lyrics, like The Lucky One and Holy Ground. Folklore has better lyrics and no problems with sound.
umm... is it me or did taylor swift looked a lil’ bit derpy in the thumbnail?

@@popdissected4400 omg yesss thank you!
Whoa, thanks for answering the questions! 😃 I think you may be the first. I totally agree with everything you said, very much explained it well!!
I totally agree! Thank you for sharing some of your story and how you connect to her music! That's so interesting.
I have some nostalgic memories with RED. I was 22. Just got married shortly, moved to England, had a baby all in the RED era. It’s special to me. ♥️ and at the time, I didn’t even know it.
Wow, that's so beautiful! Thank you for sharing! It's so incredible to hear how music has been tied to so many people's lives in specific moments. 💞
I FREAKING LOVE THIS ALBUM
YESSSS!
I’m 17 years old now and, although I was aware of Taylor Swift as long as I can remember, Red was when I was really aware of her and then 1989 was when I started seeing her as a different type of celebrity. Not just someone famous but someone imperative to American culture
Right! I think for me, that exact type of realization happened around the "reputation" era.
To those wondering where Pop Dissected went, he is in college and probably has a lot of exams and studying. He’ll be back when everything slows down.
We need new videos PLEASE!!!!!!!
you have no idea how excited i was when i saw this video was posted only an hour agooo 😱🤪
😱 😱 !!ahh!
Wow. Everything you said in the last sentences was incredible. So well explained - very true!! 💕
@@popdissected4400 thank you 😺😊

I think RED is definitely more of a pop album than country. The overall song structures and production feel more like pop, but the whole album has country elements
