  • In this video we will make a detailed sound comparison between the BOSS GX 100 vs the BOSS GT 1000 in order to verify if they sound the same or note, we will compare both the amp tones and the effect tone, trying to verify if the amp modelling algorithms used are the same for both the machine and also if the effects sound the same. I hope you enjoy and please don’t forget to subscribe and ring the bell: it would be of a great help!!!.

    You are really fun to watch. I love your friendly and extremely rational scientific perspective. You clearly quantify everything you present in the most specific unequivocal formalism. I have dealt with many professors and doctorates working with them on microbiological issues in the food industry and you seem to have much clearer thinking! Your attitude is accomadating and seems extremely humble considering your very gifted perspective. Just keep doing what you do. The world needs more like you and that would be an extremely tall order. Thank you. I always feel more enthusiastic about dealing with technical issues after just a few moments of listening to you. Great job!

    If you buy a GT1000, don't think you can just plug and play and get all the results you want...you will need to spend a lot more time fine-tuning, but it is worth it- it is a powerful unit. I have set mine up to emulate my old Deluxe Reverb and Twin Reverb amps, and it sounds incredibly close though a PA for live work. Good video thanks.

      I learned this lesson the hard way. I started playing during covid and i bought my GT1000 during the gear buying frenzy. I'd been playing maybe a year possibly less at the time. The GT 1000 is incredibly difficult and frustrating. I almost have up on it a dozen times but didn't because of how much i spent on it. I'm guessing most just gave up and returned it.

    Great review as always. If I'm in the market for new gear, I want to hear what you have to say before I buy something. I agreed with your assessment, so similar it would be impossible to tell difference in a mix. If that's the case, buy the lesser priced one. It's odd manufacturers have decided to make 2 devices that are so similar (ie HeadRush) that would appear to steal sales from the higher priced unit. That's mainly why I bought a POD Go over a Helix. I just didn't need some of the higher priced unit's feature set. Great to have choices though! God bless and rock on 🎸😎👍

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! Yes...here the differences with the bigger brother are more related to the IO (for instance the GT 1000 has XLR out and stereo fx loop, where the GX does not have XLR our and has mono fx loop)...I mean more related to the features than the sound...even because I think that in this way the manufactures can save time and money using the same modelling algorithms for many devices.
      Thank you!!!!

    Thank you Leo for always posting great contents. I personally prefer a little bit less clarity because that’s how you hear an amp sounding so it might be closer to an analog production whereas a very clear and crystal and polished sound can feel a bit less warm and too thin aka the digital sound IMO.

    It was so difficult for me to detect a difference that I defer to your opinion on this. You have tested so much gear at a very detailed level that I value your thoughts. I have a FIIO DAC with very good headphones and could barely tell a difference. I am happy with my GT-1000 and will not upgrade. I am wondering which one you prefer if you had a choice to purchase one.

    Great review!! There is definitely a distinction between the two sonically.
    They are both great units although IMO the GX100 sounded closer to the Plexi more so than the GT1000. The GT sounded more hifi and I think its effects and soundstage are beneficial attributes of higher bit depth a sampling rate of its converters therefore slightly ahead of the GX, although I preferred the sonic flavour of the GX100 overall. The GX100 is a winner.

      It is , as the saying goes "horses for courses". If you can pay the extra money for the GT then okay, but the GX gets most people where they want and knocks the Line 6 POD GO, and even the HX Stomp out the door imho.

  • @JaredGunstonTV

    Exactly what I picked up, your "brighter" is my "a bit harsh" and your "softer" is my "darker" which I personally prefer darker tones, more crunch over high end shrill frequencies. 🤟

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Lina, thank you, I'm happy that you like the video! I don't think that the IR 200 has the AIRD tech, because the AIRD tech is meant to work at its best without IRs, mimicking the interaction between an amp and the speaker, where the IR 200 is more oriented to be used with IRs. Nevertheless a comparison IR 200 vs GT 1000 would be interesting indeed...to verify the differences...

    Hi Leo. Greetings from a fellow Mediterranean Greek living in Finland. Everyone is talking about the GX 100 sounding warmer and more amp like. Do you think you can tweak the GT 1000 sound as warm as the GX 100? I'm thinking of going for the big one to not feel I'm missing out on DSP or anything. Thank you for everything you provide to the guitar world!

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Mike, well...I didn't notice this difference. To me the GT 1000 sounds even a little bit better, having better converters. In any case, tweaking the units you should get the same tone!

    Tonally, they seem so close as to be practically indistinguishable except under the most critical, isolated, and non-realistic tests listening to them back to back. The decision between them comes down to desired features for the individual application. The two that would be most important to me would be the user interface, which seems much better on the GX-100 and the ability to load multiple reverbs. I still can't believe Boss released the GT-1000 only being able to load a single reverb at a time. Some of us enjoy stacking multiple different reverbs (ie spring and hall together)

      I had a used Ampero and it would start giving artifacts if I tried to use all effect blocks at once. I think either I had a defective one or it's DSP hits a limit fairly easy. I returned it. With the boss GT1000 I never hit a DSP limit.

    This is maybe a bad question, but do the ADA converters make a difference when you just run the unit into a FRFR speaker through a 1/4 inch? Or is it just something that matters when you use them as an audio workstation via usb?

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, actually yes. When you use the unit for recording and connecting it via usb you are using the Analog to digital converters...when you go in the an FRFR speaker you are using both the Analog to digital and the Digital to Analog converters.
      Thank you for your question!

    It sounded to me like the GX100 was a bit warmer sounding and closer to the real Amp. The GT1000 sounded a bright and brittle. I think it was in the "Dynamic Range" test that the 1st string almost became inaudible - weird. I preferred the warmer sound of the GX100. I don't think my listening was quite as good as normal. 🤷‍♂️

    Great review.
    People should understand that digital bandwidth has zero effect on the tone, or quality of sound.
    It is simply a matter of headroom.
    No effect on the noise floor, as digital "technically" has no noise floor.
    A higher bandwidth is exactly what it sounds like, the frequency wave is taller, allowing for more db before its peak.
    A digital sine wave could care less how many effects or processes have been added before it (your processor does all the heavy lifting, not the convertor), as it simply considers it one signal.
    This is why a singe guitar, and a 128 piece orchestra recorded, and mastered at the same frequency will have the same perceived fidelity.
    The "audiophiles" who insist higher frequency and bit rate "sound" better, are correct.
    The higher rate allows the mastering to be done at higher db, making it easier to hear more detail, even when that detail already exists.
    Every human ear has its own unique ability to process sound, and every person has a different level of "headroom" before the sound becomes distorted.
    If you take a recording of somebody speaking, and listen to it at a barely perceptible level, you wont understand what is being said, even though at a louder volume it is perfectly clear.
    Or when you hear a detail in a song you never noticed before, you do not listen to it again at a lower volume, you turn it as loud as you can before it distorts to hear it better.
    That is why re-mastering old material has the perception of higher quality.
    None of the material was re-recorded, just re-mastered louder.
    All of this is moot, when dealing with a digital guitar signal.
    Pretty much anybody will tell you the analog sound coming from a quality amp, through a quality speaker, will always sound better than any recording of the same.
    As long as the signal is not exceeding its headroom, there will be zero difference in perceived quality.

    Over TH-cam, when it came to amp modelling, the tonality of the GT 1000 seemed a little too bright and looking at the adjustments you made, it required more drastic tweaks. The GX 100 sounded more similar in tonality to me both before and after tweaking.
    As for the effects, I wasn't listening super critically and would need to go back and forth instantly to make up my mind.
    I'd consider myself to be impartial because I don't own either and have no interest in buying either. I'm watching more out of curiosity. Perhaps things have changed with firmware updates, but all the early descriptions of their approach to amp modelling was that the amps aren't necessarily one to one recreations but more idealised representations. They've gone more with the "everything at 12 o'clock should be your starting point" mentality. I'm more interested in the "warts and all" mentality. Also, I use a looper a lot and would prefer longer times on the one built in.

    I like the sound the GX 100 more than the flagship GT 1000 by a little bit....It sounded closer to the amp, IMO.... I think there's something they've actually improved.... I suspect whatever tweaks/upgrades they used well be coming to the GX 1000..... Plus other new upgrades and updates. I wouldn't try to match an amp exactly though..... And just tweak it until it done best for what it is.... It is it as a multi effects pedal before a tube amp. Or use it in tandem with a real amp as a stereo counterpart.

    I think the Amp Test is a little bit boring and some licks are too long, especially lick 4, which always repeats the same. Moreover, those licks are not built to test delay and reverbs, as all the repetitions are very confused one on top of each other. I liked it more before this mania of 'eliminating the human error' at all costs.
