  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ I was taken by surprise when the ‪@BOSSinfoglobal‬ GX100 appeared a few months back. I think this is the best modeler Boss have made in recent years, but why don't more folks use one?
    thmn.to/thoprod/538371?partne... here's an affiliate link for the BOSS GX100 just in case you wanted one!
    So the GX100 - it has touch screen, totally free signal chain, and a colour screen. Here's the first time unboxing it, turning it on, and building my own preset (without reading the manual - which I will now do!)

    I have the GX100 and love it. I was hoping you would do another video on it. As a relative beginner, I always appreciate your playing and insights on your channel, and I hope you will continue to explore the amps and effects on this unit. Thanks for the really enjoyable and informative channel!

    I came for the info on Boss modelers. I returned for Little Wing. What a gorgeous, gorgeous rendition! At the moment the rhythm section came in and I realised what you were playing I felt like cheering. I'd love to listen to any album you put together, Nathan. Your playing is tasteful and skillful and I'd love to develop my playing to the same level one day. Keep up the great work!

    I think this thing is fantastic. The amp modelling is something else, especially those "X" amps, and the effects are as good as expected. I love the fact that it doesn't come with an absolute overkill of all kinds of amp emulations, but gives you essential tools and tones to create anything you could need. It's very practically orientated and sounds absolutely great.

    After struggling with the HX Stomp and POD Go for a couple years and never quite getting them to feel right to me, I got a GX-100 when they first came out. Couldn't be happier. Don't care about sounding exactly like this or that amp--just want a good sound that responds the way I like. The GX does it. And I find it much easier to tweak than the Line 6 stuff, maybe because I gigged with a GT-8 for years. Also, I don't miss scenes or snapshots at all. The ability to assign anything to any button makes it so I can have a core sound, then turn on/off multiple effects and adjust multiple parameters with one button press.

      There you go, all the marketing hype focuses on reproductions of an amp or whatever, but most working guitarists just want to get to their sounds easy and have it sound good.

    I am using the GX100 both live and in the Homestudio. I like to have everything I need in one Preset. So I started with the Deluxe Reverb Amp , a Klone and a Clean Boost as the Gain Stages and Tremolo and Univibe as Effects. Delay on C1 controlled by the Expression Pedal ( Delay Volume ) , Bank up for Looper, Bank down for Acoustic Guitar Sim. A Compressor and the Reverb are fixed. ( Always on ) . I fixed it on a Pedalboard so I could use a strong and long extra Power cable. For Monitoring I was using a Harley Benton G212A FR Cabinet. But after testing a Kemper Power Kone I was totally exited how much better the Sound was . It felt much more like a Amp in the Room. So I ordered 2 of them as a Stereo Rig and thats my Solution now. I know that a Kemper Kone Kabinet is not build for the GX100 but for me it sounds fantastic.

    I've used Boss GT-10, GT-100 and GT-1000. To me the ideal would be their tones with the user interface of Line6 Helix/HX Stomp. The metal knobs are classy too.
    Also, I think because Roland designs (maybe manufactures?) the chips is why the latency is so good. Everyone else I think is simply using ARM or SHARC processors, which are great, but you're fitting software to a processor rather than building something cohesive.

    Roland has a long history of synthesizers and this has definitely transferred over to the Boss guitar products in terms of UI and interaction. I think they are just so used to thinking that way that they find it very hard to make something more user friendly like the way the headrush, hx/helix and quad cortex does. From a software engineering standpoint they have very likely been reusing old tools and libraries to create their UIs.

    During the late 90s, the leader of my first band opined that DigiTech effects processors were for guitarists who didn’t know how to play. (I might’ve misheard him.) During the last year that we worked together (and he said that), his processor of choice was a Zoom 3030. It’s been a while since we’ve met in person. If we do meet again soon, I’d love to show him my GX-100 and get his take. It is 28 February, 2024 as I leave my comment. I created my first patch on this paddleboard five days ago, and it came out exactly the way I wanted it to.

    Got an ME-70 in 2009 since I was new to multi effects pedals and guitar in general. Probably the best decision a beginner could make because you got a lot for a quarter of the price.
    The upside of it was on-the-fly adjustments, but the down side was you don’t have a screen like the GX to save a chain of everything together.
    All in all, it’s 2 ways, do you plug into your amps preamp and stack or do you plug into the back of the cab and do it that way. I’ve found both ways work well, but you do sometimes need to plug into the front of amp to stack preamps to make Boss modelers to really get a voice.

    only a few years ago I didn’t use any Boss products. Now I’m in the process of building a pedalboard/case which uses a Boss GT Core, VE-500, and RC-500. Even my peripheral stuff like foot-switches and expression pedal are all Boss.
    I’m going around playing with a lot of different bands so making a rack for the whole band isn’t viable, so a pedalboard was the only way to go.
    I can have a self contained rig where I just plug in and go, including both my guitar and vocals. And all for a cost less than the high end modelers which would only do my guitar no vocals, and looping would be restricted to what I could do within one scene.
    Altogether, I can’t think of another way to have mostly any guitar tone, processed vocals, and a two track looper, and fit it all in a one handed briefcase

    BOSS are pretty much universally regarded as one of, if not THE greatest and most important pedal companies of all time. They have JC-120's in Studio's all over the World and Roland Blue's Cube's are amazing amps. The Katana series was a HUGE and even unexpected success story for BOSS. They sold a Zillion of them.........BUT..........the all in one multi--fx? The ME-80 has gone completely unchanged for 8 years and still sell's at a not so cheap price. The GT1 had mixed reviews. They only just recently updated their COSM to AIRD.....The GX100 looks professional enough., but if other companies are offering 60 more amps (everyone loves options) and BOSS is trying to play catch up in the market, it is an uphill climb for them.
    That said, I will always love their pedals and amps.

  • @yikelu
    @yikelu ปีที่แล้ว

    I recently got the OD-200, and coming from the Helix world UI wise, it was a culture shock to basically have only one old school letters/numbers screen (think alarm clock) for the interface. The symbols were very hard to decode and/or memorize, so to do any set up I constantly had to check the manual.
    Sound wise it's great. And I understand the UI kind of has to be that way to keep the price down ... maybe. I wonder if modern displays are cheap enough to be able to put into a pedal of that size and price range.

    John revisiting this video you did. Looking at the GX100 as a good travel rig. I love the Stomp. However what I find frustrating is the DSP limitations with the Stomp. Some amp models use more DSP than others. So that in turn limits the number of blocks and effects I wan to use.

      Why laughed at? Zoom can be freakin' awesome. Despite it's "plasticky" almost Star Wars Toy style appearance, the G6 is AMAZING. The touch screen is supposedly a bit slow for some, and you have to jump around with the foot switching to get to the looper, but other than that, it sounds great and is super easy to use. Plus you can save up to more than 2 hours on an SD card. Love Zoom products.

    I had a gt100 before shifting to line 6 hd500, and i still have an sy300, dd200 RC 300 and rc500. My albeit limited and personal experience is that in terms of their more digital multi products, they're pretty poor on taking on feedback even for bug fixes for these products, roll out very few fw updates and the support for the units are quite short lived. With boss the product is what it is at release, may get a few but fixes for midi implementation down the track and then they'll focus on their next product.
    I pointed out a bug on the dd200 for their tape and drum delay implementation to the AU branch and no update has happened to correct it. By contrast I found a serious bug in the source audio ventris and they fixed it within days trying a few different fw updates for me to beta test. It's an old product but SA still put the time in. The dd200 is newer and no fix in sight and it would be easy for them.
    Boss can make great sounding products but they are presented as WYSIWYG and no fuss at release which they're attitude towards updates. Some are really well implemented because they are several generations of that product down the line and they have made refinements from product to product but if you adopt early you'll likely find your self needing to sell off the older product to buy the newer model to get those imporvements. They don't support the more complex gear for long, putting future improvements into the next piece of gear. I may be wrong but it's the lack of future proofing their products with long term support and FW updates, that their competition L6 and FAS do as a business model (and people expect neural to do) that holds BOSS back and diminishes the brand to a lower tier of product for GT and GX modellers - even if the sounds are on par. I don't know what they're like for the 500 series but I hope they're better there.
    I also found it discouraging to see on their Japanese site a statement on their policy on customer feedback/suggestions for their products. I really hope that was something lost in translation.
    So with their simpler products compact pedals, smaller units like the 200 series I'll happily get them if they fill a need but expect no support. I think they knocked it out of the park with the sy300 (but got mine used because $1000 was too much for what it is) and I wish it was smaller. If only the sy200 let you select the wave form in each of the settings. The RC 300 and 500 loopers are great too but I expect no further support for them as boss looks to the next series. Often the next series only has minor upgrades or is a repackage of the older unit with close to identical algorithms/models. There are some exceptions mostly recent but also many which are not exceptions.

    • @literalghost929
      @literalghost929 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good point for the updates! The Helix/Stomp/Go, just by updating the unit, all users get a lot of new free amps and effects, some of which are just superb and would stand on their own as single effects pedal...!
      Not sure how significant the Helix was in contrast with Kemper and others at release, but I think that when the Go was released, it was kinda revolutionary; getting top notch sound quality (Helix) at a very affordable price. Almost (99%?) up to par with anything; be it real or effects, in terms of sound quality. But since I bought the Go (Helix was interesting but just too expensive/big for my needs), i maybe be biased. Probably as historically relevant as the original Pod?

    • @johnnytwo-shoes9798
      @johnnytwo-shoes9798 ปีที่แล้ว

      My memory of the helix when it was released was that it was very bare bones. All the special characteristics sounds like the seeker (step seq wah) that were in the hd500 their previous flagship wasn't ported over which I expected to be, at least until they upgraded the algorithm. The distortion selection didn't suit me either and I wanted the legacy FX they now have in there. Since, the improvements have been huge and I could always make it work, but I did go back to the hd500x sometimes at the start. Also they never ported over the vocoder.
      I think the helix LT is better priced being much closer to the hx stomps price. The flagship has advantages i use so it's handy the extra exp control for example. The pod go is missing the dynamic DSP implementation which is why it was a miss for me and I went with an hx stomp as my smaller unit. I think if they did something like the hd500 in the pod go - 8 dynamic DSP blocks but a fixed amp cab which if turned off can be reallocated - it would have been my smaller unit. That same limitation is why I didn't like gt1000 core series (24 simultaneous FX but they determined what the FX were and most were simple versions of an fx) and with my sold off my gt100 - 2 Flexi blocks and the rest locked into an fx type. I like the dynamic DSP approach.,¯\(°_o)/¯

    • @literalghost929
      @literalghost929 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnnytwo-shoes9798 Yeah the Go's main limitation is DSP.. There's a json patch file where the amp and cab, volume, wah, etc., blocks have been removed and all of the 8 blocks I think it is are empty; so dynamic.
      But the Go's limited DSP basically means that if you're using an expensive amp, reverb and pedal, that's it... You can run out of DSP with just those 3 blocks. So having 8 dynamic blocks isn't useful if you can't use them....
      For me the LT was still too much, and it's more than the price 2 pod go's. And what you can do with the Go for the price is/was pretty amazing! Stomp has its disadvantages vs Go in its own ways too!

    • @zhimsy
      @zhimsy ปีที่แล้ว

      Summed it up well. I used to have a lot of Roland and Boss gear but you had to go in with the “as is” mindset when purchasing. Even bugs didn’t get patched sometimes, USB drivers won’t be updated etc. Jupiter 50 never got a PC editor, the iPad editor was discontinued, and editing on the screen and wheel was downright painful sometimes. Cakewalk Sonar dropped (though Gibson ultimately really killed it) and my VS 700 felt like a stressful soon to be brick.
      Not to hate on it, I loved the gear and sounds, but a lot of little problems and worries added up.
      To reiterate again I get it, you but gear for what it can do NOW. But still, if another company offers better future proofing then I’d rather have that.

    I’m retired and just spent a whole week (for about the third time) working on one Helix patch to perfect it for the pub gig band I play in. Basically replicating having one amp with a comp, drive, chorus and wah. I thought I was getting there BUT when I do an A/B test versus my two Boss Katanas in stereo expand mode (or just one of them in mono) the Helix is nowhere close. This has been doing my head in for the last year. I’ve got the powercab, genelec monitors, maxkie thumps and tried playing it through them all. I’m beginning to think it is just the processing latency that I can sense as the boss katanas just feel more connected (only word I can think of). Boss stuff just seems to have some mind of soecial sauce on it. I even downloaded your excellent Heleix patches but still prefer the Boss katana… maybe I just have funny ears…. Or maybe it is because boss products are just (as they say in Liverpool) boss. (My band mates think I’ve got shares in them😂. I haven’t)

    Community wise. I've a bit of nostalgia for the days of GT central. Always lots of patch sharing with geniuses who could do anything, from
    Iron bells to helicopters which was handy for doing brick in the wall with a covers band heh heh.
    Of course this was all fan driven. Boss were less than useless. Before tone studio, they had zero interest.

    what do you think is the best idea? 1. use boss pedals to record directly from USB or plug it into an audio interface ? 2. connect the pedal to amps and record it from amps? 3. connect the pedal to the amp and then connect it to interface for recording ?

    I had a GX100 for almost a month. It's a REALLY REALLY GREAT unit. But ultimately I went to an HX Stomp XL because I already know the Helix software. It's just so much easier to get around for me in the Helix than the Boss stuff. Assigning footswitches and setting up patches or scenes seemed foreign to me. Additionally, the Helix keeps getting updates with new effects and amps. They've added almost an entire separate multifx unit's worth of FX, Amps, and capabilities for free since launch. Boss typically doesn't add new stuff. Still a great unit though.

    • @Scott__C
      @Scott__C ปีที่แล้ว

      I kept both, but I feel like if Boss's interface was more akin to the Helix, it would be all I need. I think most folks though have a few amps or tones they need which they can most likely get from one or two amps.

  • @ThomasHope73

    Yeah, fair play for giving them a go, but my thinking is: if it ain’t fun, it’s gonna sap creativity. The way they do it looks like a pain the proverbial. Even the best interfaces on the market seem to all lack something (scribble strips, touch screen, logical colour code, etc.) There’s always something not quite right, that seems like it was low hanging fruit that got missed. So when you have an interface that seems to go out of its way to be different, rather than accepting the established good ideas and adding to them…. well it’s pretty much a non-starter. 🤷‍♂️ JMO

    Ordered one but it will goback to have a Headrush MX5. The main problem is that L and R outputs are not separated, so you cannot configure Cab ON/OFF on different outputs, really weird cause you can do it even in the Hotone Ampero, which is cheaper...

    I got a Boss GT-1000 second hand for about a year ago for 650€. And it was the best decision I could ever make. It sounds freaking killer. And the desktop editor is good enough for me. Also, you can connect it via Bluetooth to any device and control it there with as if you were in your pc with the desktop editor. It also looks and feels rock solid. The screen has brightness for days when you play live in outdoors in a sunny day. And has a lot of routing and personalizing options inside to make you feel comfortable. The assign matrix is nuts: I can do whatever I want to do, I just have to program it. I don't know why it isn't more popular (well, I do to some extent, but...). For me, at least, it is such a hidden gem on the shadows of the more youtuber promoted digital devices such as Helix and others. And specially at its pricepoint (and even the better pricepoint in the second hand market.

      Dude you able to help me out?
      I've gotten a GT-1000 too recently, and one problem that I have (idk if I'm just a noob when it comes to modelling amps) but basically I've got it connected to a FR FR speaker (Headrush 12inch) and it seems to be way too loud. I've put the volume on the Headrush down to 3 but its still super loud. So when I'm switching between a softer effects channel like Chorus to Hi-Gain distortion it comes out really strong. Is there a way to tweak it to make all the sounds level?

    • @tejeguitar
      @tejeguitar ปีที่แล้ว

      @@QLDdontget13v13 yep! Not an expert, but I'll try my best: in every fx, every amp module and every patch there's a level knob/setting to level it up through your whole setup. Even an overall system level setting. It is called "Level" everytime, check for it.

I appreciate the fact, they dont copy other amps, but have their own thing going. I think since GX100 does dont model a specific amp puts off a lot of buyers, but the reality is none of the amp digital "modelers" sound real or "feel" like the real amp...lol...a lot of tweaking is needed.

    I think I agree with some of the comments here. Their digital stuff has always been a bit mediocre which was compounded by them pricing their digital pedals fairly highly for most of their existence.
    I think a lot of it is that their amp sims are just not good because I have a vague recollection that their peddle emulations where pretty good. I used to play with someone who used an ME-50 and that sounded pretty good but that could be rose tinted retrospective glasses.
    I love their stomps though (as I think most people do).

    I've had GX100 for two months now. I think that factory presets should be corrected in cabinet section, mic position 5mm setting should be switched to center to immediately sound better or have few pro IR's loaded. thats one good (or bad) thing that i like about boss stuff, they dont attempt to model a amp, they just make a clean, a edge of breakup or a distorted sound, its up to the user to create the tone they like (you know, like a real amp) by using the eq and the now extra features available from the software (internal or external)
    people just seem to want a click and go "fender" style, fiar enough if thats what they want though

    • @Scott__C
      @Scott__C ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually like that more, because, some obscure boutique amp is unlikely I've seen one in person, let alone had the chance to sit and play through one. Clean, dynamic breakup, slight drive, overdriven and full on distortion. What more do you need?

    • @KenithCopeland
      @KenithCopeland ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Scott__C spot on. Too much emphasis is placed on “what amp” such an such band or guitarist used. Doesn’t really matter, was it clean ? Was it on the edge of break up ? Was it high gain ? Start there and your 90% at the tone
      Haha I remember seeing a video with Paul (prs Paul) saying he made this certain amount after a dumble….. someone in the audience put their hand up, Paul asked what the question was, guy says “I’ve never and will probably never ever play through a dumble so what’s the point of using that in a reference”. It’s a valid point too

    Boss has stepped up their game over the last 5 or so years. They offer excellent products at a really great price compared to competitors like Strymon if you will. I have really loved the boss products that I have purchased over the last couple years. But I think there is this stigma of bland or boring that will follow that company forever. It isn't true but it is sort of set in stone. Kind of like Toyota is to cars. I have a Toyota Tacoma. It is a boring truck but I love it.
