  • In this video, we will share a direct comparison between the BOSS GX 100 and the LINE 6 POD GO. First of all we will hear the units in action with a demo song, then we will compare the technical characteristics of the 2 units with a very detailed comparison chart, then we will ear more sounds, comparing the 2 units with real tube amps checking out the frequency response, the dynamic range management, the note envelop, and the effects, and finally I will give you my 2 cents. So I hope you enjoy, and please subscribe and ring the bell, as it would really help me to make more videos like this!

Great music and playing Leo. Fantastic demos and comparisons as well. Held off getting the Pod Go because didn't like the pick attack on the clean/mid gain sounds . Sold my GT100 and just got the GX 100 yesterday. Loved the tones on your demos and when I tested it at the shop was blown away plus coming from the GT 100 it was easier to programme. BIG THANKS FOR YOUR VIDEOS LEO.

After a bit more thought about buying the Boss unit I finally picked one up this week. It works well as expected from your review, (and others) of it. Being a beginner guitar player I also purchased the Boss RC5 looper pedal and the FS7 foot switch. The looper has a rhythm drum kit section and compliments the GX-100 nicely. The GX-100 looper was a little too limited for me as I wanted to record my playing for longer than its short time limit. I can use the FS7 foot switch with both the looper and modeler so a good investment for my entry into guitar. Your reviews of this unit put me in a position, (as a beginner) to make an informed decision, thanks again.

Congratulations and I just have to say, kids like me in the 80's and 90's could not have even barely imagined a device such as this, with these vast and customizable sonic capabilities and in this price range and with a touchscreen too. I hope you enjoy it to the hilt and go "Hog Wild" creatively on it as often as you can.

Subscribed.. Very nicely done video.. Only if the licks from one to another could have been a little closer or only one short lick at a time.. I felt the pod had better modelling and maybe a more darker sublte tube kind of vibe

I have a BOSS ME-80 which has served well, but the amp modelling is naturally way behind the latest, so I will be upgrading it. I had looked at the Line 6 HX which seem to be available on Reverb at the moment for circa GBP 300 if used. I would prefer new though, because of warranty etc, and the switchable banks like I have on my ME-80 are very important to me, I was glad to see both have these, and although more expensive the GX 100 is sturdier and has an easier interface, so I am torn.
Leo, can you give me your opinion to what I want it to do for me, and which you think is the better option? I play direct into a Focusrite Scarlett Audio interface which is connected to a PA, and I play over backing tracks that are sent to the Scarlett via Ableton 9. I play mostly Pink Floyd covers which you will realise need a lot of effects for most of the guitar parts, and I would like to amp model Gilmour's Hi-Watt and cab setup, as well as Leslie Rotary modelling. Both are available in Line 6, but not sure if the GX 100 can do the same. I don't need some of the features in the Boss, as I simply want pedal board and amp/cab models, maybe the Line 6 is all I need? I play to small audiences so the final sound from my guitar just needs to be authentic and be sent almost direct to the PA desk, so maybe I could save some money? The touchscreen and Bluetooth features of the Boss are not important to me, but are useful of course. I just don't want to buy more than I need.
Your help, or anyone else's would be welcome. Like the video btw! The idea of using the same sound clip on all 3 amps is great.

Hi Chin, well they are both pretty good....You can check out the more sound section to decide by your own...I can tell you that with the GX 100 I was able to get one of the nicer Strat lead tone I have ever made...pretty quickly, thanks to the touch screen used in conjunction with the knobs..
      Thank you!

Nice Video Leo! I've owned both, Pod Go last year for a few days before it was returned - so restrictive and very uninspiring, and the GX100 just for a week or so. Really getting into the GX, fantastic sounds, and it's great with my Roland JC via four cable set up 👍

Thanks for the very detailed and professional video, it really was the most helpful one I've encountered so far. Regarding a preference... I must admit to having been shocked by the aggressive, annoying, fizzy (digital?) tone of the higher gain Boss sounds. The Pod is definitely (ugh, here it comes) warmer. If not for that (to my ears huge) tonal difference, the Boss would be a no-brainer for me, if only for the effects and greater flexibility. I would probably have to cut the highs on every sound if I got it.

I had a Boss GT-1 and then a Katana 100 but switched to a Headrush FRFR and a Pod Go. After about a year of using it and gigging with it, I think I’m ready to go back to Boss. The Go is very useful and I like a board with an FRFR because although I loved the Katana, I didn’t like an amp behind me as I have some hearing issues from being a 40+ year drummer. The Pod has a very finicky volume pedal setup that no matter what I try I can’t seem to get control of it. I’m a 30+ year IT architect and comfortable with tech and software, but really struggling with the volume levels between patches and snapshots. I also have Boss WAZA Air headphones and the Boss sounds just sound better to me. Will be selling the Pod and getting the GX100. Btw, gorgeous Kiesel next to you!

To me the GX sounded like the reverb was dialed down compared to the Pod Go. Would this be fixed by simply turning up the reverb, or is there some sort of limitations with the GX-100's processing capabilities?

As a Boss ME-80 and Line6 HD-500 user, I always thought that ME-80 works more like "real amp'" in Live situations. To me, HD-500 has better audio output resolution, better high frequencies, but doesn't have the mid range punch of Boss. Interesting that this difference kind of remains on GX100 and PodGo, specially on your Live playing demonstration. But when compared with the real Marshall and Fender, cleared that the PodGod had more definition and matched better the real deal.

Cool video. Personally I could not decide which is "better", they are both very good for this price range. You cannot go wrong with both if you do not want to spend more money. I lean more towards line6 but this is more I am more familiar to its fx, editor and ecosystem.

HX stomp offre qualcosina in più in termini di signal chain...in termini di suono sono praticamente equivalenti... se dovessi fare una comparazione diretta tra GX 100 e Stomp XL credo che i risultati sarebbero molto simili a quanto esposto in questo video.

I recently bought a PodGo and was afraid I’d have to return it for the Boss. But I did prefer the sounds of the PodGo in your video. So, I’m sticking with it. One thing to note is the DSP limits. An amp like the jumped plexi uses a lot of DSP. Depending on the other effects you choose you may not be able use everyone you want. This isn’t an issue for me, as I use cleaner amps, but may be for some.

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Joe, good points, thank you for sharing! As regards the sounds, I think you can get good tones with both the units, and it comes down to your personal preferences. On the other hand, the BOSS signal chain is for sure better compared to the one of the POD GO.

Hi Mario, I'm super happy that you like my playing!
It's pretty hard to answer without all your detailed needs. Even because the risk is to give you a wrong advice. First off al these are all great units...I would say that if you need at least 8 foot switches when you play live, the FM3 could not be the right unit. If you want a unit to be able to profile your amp, you need to go with the Quad Cortex. If you want the unit with the most flexible signal chain and with 3 parallel effects paths, the GT 1000 is the unit for your...etc.
Maybe you can check out some of my comparison videos, as I think I compared the QC to the FM3 and to Helix, and also the Helix to the GT 1k, etc.

For the price can't go wrong with the Pod GO, especially if you're a simple signal chain player. Same price though I think the GX 100 is the better unit, unless there's a certain amp type you really want in the Pod GO. I have the Helix and really love the line 6 litigator amp, it's probably the amp I play the most. It's a dumble style boutique sounding amp. Now with the Line 6 Catalyst out it has only like 6 amp styles but one of them is the litigator or at least mostly litigator, plus like a fender clean, marshal-y cruch, and high gain and a couple more. It basically covers most of the presets I play, I think if I had to start from nothing today I'd pick up a catalyst and use those amps and get a cheaper effects processor to go with it.

Well, Leo... the plexi sounds better on the Boss, and the Twin I kind of liked a little bit the POD, but the GX just seemed to nail it very close. I am one to use more the channel signal than stereo FX loop, I don't do 7 cable method, only done 4 cable like 5 times in my gigs. I am a Boss lover, though, and I lean to it since I've had a GT-3, GT-6, and GT-8, along with an ME-70. I think that for quick gigs I will get the ME-80, and then for the serious stuff, the GT-1000. I don't think anyone else has topped Boss' AIRD amp behavior as of yet, at least in a pedal and not that I'm aware of,excepting IKMultimedia's Amplitube 5 or Peavey's Revalver or other worthy plug ins being its possible peers of course. That to me is a Major consideration as I like avoiding using actual hot and finicky tube amps as much as possible and especially during a hot summer too. I would say that with both you can achieve great results. For sure the POD GO has more amps, but has a pretty poor mic section, where the GX has less amp but you have some more parameters to tweak for the mics.

one thing that all line 6s have a defect from the first pod red bean xt x3 go helix etc is the sound of the hollow melody ... it always sounds muffled never clear as it should sound instead which on the Boss in general always sounds good even the old Boss models sound clear and empty like in a real amplifier. ditto Fractal has this flaw and that Headrush Eleven rack orange doesn't have because he too plays the empty me singing very clearly. ditto Kemper excellent . so after having had line 6 all the most important models, I understood this defect idem Fractal. in the studio, try to believe and then you can feel the defect of line 6 and Fractal under your fingers

what do you think is the best idea? 1. use boss pedals to record directly from USB or plug it into an audio interface ? 2. connect the pedal to amps and record it from amps? 3. connect the pedal to the amp and then connect it to interface for recording ?

    • @LeoGibsonGtr
      @LeoGibsonGtr  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi, I would connect the unit to an amp only if I wanted to use that amp tone. Otherwise the best connection is via USB...using the GX 100 connected via usb to your computer you are gonna have an Analog to Digital conversion to have the sound in your computer. If you use the analog port of your audio interface, you are gonna go to more A D A conversions.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure if I have properly understood, but I would say that the best way to use these machines is to connect them directly to a computer via USB. I would not connect them to a Katana, as I think that the modelling technology is the same.

On repeated listening it seems to me that the Pod Go has a slightly more solid sound, but the difference to the GX100 is really small. When you then add in the fact that the Boss has a total of 15 effect slots and all that flexibility, while the Pod Go has only 4 free slots, it seems to me that the Boss is the winner. What does everyone else think.

Thank you for your review as I am looking to buy one of these units and needed help deciding. I like the Boss and after your review can now make a more informed selection. I also liked that the Boss has input sensitivity selection as I discovered in researching that the Pod Go has an input problem (low input impedance) which requires a buffer before inputing a passive guitar into the Pod Go. It seems if you use the Line 6 wireless connection from the guitar it works perfectly without effecting the tone as this device has a buffer built into it.
The tone problem with the Pod Go is explained here. th-cam.com/video/Ykezs1A7PBE/w-d-xo.html
Have you experienced the same tone problems in testing the Pod Go?

Nothing like a good tube amp. Unfortunately they're bloody heavy and you still need shed loads of pedals. With some tweaking modellers can sound fantastic, but they'll never shift air.
I'm thinking 2 reasonable tranny amps, a modeller and go stereo. Win, win.
As for the Pod Go or the GX 100? Still not sure. 😔

The Boss GX100 is currently about $200 more expensive in the States. If you like the Boss sound, it looks like a good purchase to me. I think the GX100 will be a good unit for many years to come, whereas you might start thinking about replacing the Pod Go in a 2 or 3 years. Each has different selling points. I don't know how frequently Boss updates their Firmware, and that is something important to consider.
I did notice that the Suhr sounded more "Straty" through the Pod Go.

    Boss GX-100 vs Pod GO:
UI is better on Pod GO even though it does not have a touch screen (much better in live usage).
Boss has much less amp options and they sound similar to each other (I think this is because their AIRD tone capture technology has a feature which makes different amp sounds get closer to each other; therefore they do not make a stand-alone unit for their tone capture algorithm unlike Kemper, Mooer, Tonex etc.).
Pod GO has less build quality and feels weaker.
Pod GO has stereo FX loop and balanced outputs.
Boss GX-100 bluetooth or tone studio UI is worse than Pod Go/HX Edit. Still, this is bearable though.
Boss has more blocks but you are somewhat limited because you can only use the blocks which are given to you, nonetheless it is certain that it has more dsp power than both Pod GO and Helix HX Stomp.
Tips: If you choose to buy the Boss GX-100, I strongly recommend some pre-amp pedals within FX loop (like Tonex or Mooer Preamp X) to increase your tonal capabilities and use the GX-100 for the remaining part (such as drive/mod effects and IR loading).

Boss’ modeling is second to none. They have a brightness and responsiveness more closely related to a valve amp. A little thinner than the real deal, but I think every modeler is thinner than the real deal. If I can’t use a real amp I’m going Boss for digital modeling every time! Helix modeling is one of the worst to my ears. Response to dynamics is on the lower end of the modeler spectrum.
I feel Helix also sounds so artificial. I feel like it completely obscures the voice of the instrument. Just taking input signal and recomputing the sound according to signal levels.
