Just wanted to send you a huge “Thank you” . I’ve had this issue for years, my tags are expired because of it. The mechanic was not able to fix it and kept ordering used instrument clusters off eBay only to have them broken also. It took us hours to solder it but it worked. I used the link for the capacitors you had listed below. I am so grateful for you making this TH-cam video. Beyond! I would love to send you a tip if you have a Venmo account. Thank you! And then Thank you two more time. I really appreciate it.
Just did my mother-in-law's 2005 xB today. Replaced the two capacitors (a little challenging and I have a BSEE and soldered for years. Component mounting has changed since college), plugged it all in and all is good. Her battery was dying every 24 hours so we will let it sit for a few days and see what happens. Thanks for this Ron and especially the part numbers and source.
Hello Roger! Great to hear that it worked out for you. Yeah soldering these Caps was a bit tricky for sure. I had a crappy soldering iron so that also made it harder for me. However, my soldering is holding up great so far and all my lights are bright and the gauges are popping up like new. I was also experiencing battery drainage but since the repair it seems to be better. Fingers crossed this also fixes your Mum-in-law's battery too. have had caps to do this for quite some time and recently has become unbearable so broke down and found a guy with micro setup to do this right and paid the man. replacing the 2 100uf 16v caps like in the video fixed it up like new. used the digikey caps. Very thankful for the video. Best mod done to box in quite some time......
Thank you very much. Replacing those two capacitors as worked and fixed my 2005 Scion xB ride. In the last two weeks the dash lights went out entirely. Now no more flickering 100% brightness and no more dead battery as it was creating a current draw. I will update down the road. Thank you again for this great video and information.

Okay, had the EXACT same problem on the box car I recently got from a friend. Scoured the internet for answers, found your video. Watched 10 other videos on how to solder, bought all the parts on Amazon and a cheap soldering iron (mistake). And after an hour or so of scratching my head I changed out the Capacitor you point at , @ 8:49. Tested it and no flashing strong dinging sound. @ThirteenthPirate awesome and thank you for letting us know it worked for you. Yes I too had a cheap soldering iron that I borrowed and I would suggest getting a quality one for doing this. My repair is still going strong, lights are bright, no flashing, and the needles pop right up, so fingers crossed it stays that way. Take care ~Ron
For my 2005, the first issue I noticed was on coldest/damp mornings, starter sounded like it was hanging, not pulling off, so I would quickly turn the engine back off again. After one or two tries, sounded like starter now fully disengages, all ok then. That is when I realized it was associated with most of the warning lights flashing repeatedly and a clicking sound coming from the dash. Later realized that if I used the door lock remote to open the door on those coldest mornings, the clicking sound (same rhythm as the flashing) in the dash was already happening even before I put the key in the ignition. So now I have learned to just turn the key and let the flashing go on for a couple minutes before turning to engage starter. Waiting like this eliminates the starter problem and a minute or two later the guages start working. Also have the same pulsing in the gauge lights all the time. I was suspicious of the entire power supply to the cluster until I found this video. Happening more often now at less cold temps. Do you have any thoughts on these additional symptoms? Also in Florida.
I did try that first, but when I typed the caps and their call number I got something different. Just wanted to make sure I was getting the correct caps.; I guess example would be typing PCE453CT-ND 100uf 16v gave me a different number..so wanted to make sure . will give them some time to reply to the email I sent. Would you have a video recommendation on soldering these capacitors? I'm currently working on it and so far, it has been tricky. Might have to try with another board. Thanks!
Hey there MVoelker! Sorry I wish I did, but sadly I do not. It is tricky for sure and my soldering was not at all all anything to brag about but they are still holding up for me. I will say, if I have to mine over, I will invest in a nice soldering iron. The one I borrowed from a friend was not the best and I think this made the job harder to do for me. Good luck and just take your time. ~Ron
Hello Pei! So my dash lights would also "flicker" and they were dim too prior to replacing those two CAPS. After I replaced them, they are very bright and no more "flickering".
Hey there Wooly Bully Banana Peel!! You're very welcome and hopefully it helps you out. So far the video seems to be helping others and my console is still going strong since the repair. Please let us know how it goes for you! ~Ron
My ECU-B is connected to my cluster gauge, a/c, power windows for my 2008 Scion xB, and it's causing a parasitic drain while the car is off. It might be the cluster gauge.
I swapped the 3 capacitors and the disks work, but now my LCD display has a mind of its own. It doesn't respond to the control pin and I can't read my odometer. Does anyone else have this problem?
Hello Hydrolix! I wonder if by chance when you put the board back together that maybe you bent one of the pins. Look at minute 6:14ish and right near my thumb are a series of pins in the plastic. You may want to carefully pull it apart and check that none of them are bent down. ~Ron
Hey there Hiramcuevas808! So there are a total of six capacitors on the board, but two of them are the same. While I did order all of the capacitors, I only replaced these two and they are the same part number. PCE4534CT-ND -- CAP ALUM 100UF 16V -- PANASONIC (2 Each) . I ordered 10 of these just incase I messed some up, but got lucky and only needed two. If you watch the video it will show which two these are. It has now been 11 days since I replaced mine and all is good. The dash lights are super bright again and all the gauges work like new. Good luck and hope this helps. ~Ron
I'm in PUNTA GORDA, Where in FLA. are you?????? I wish you had shown the removal and re-soldering of those capacitors. Thank You for this VIDEO.... I needed it......
Hey BubPiper! You're very welcome and I hope the video helps. I am just north of Tampa. I almost did video me soldering the capacitors, but there are several real good videos of guys doing this type of soldering on TH-cam so I passed. It was actually pretty easy to do, but make sure you have a really good soldering iron with a small tip, flux, and proper solder. I ended up only doing the two and it's been over 2 weeks now and all is going well. Dash lights are super bright again, no flashing or dimming, and the gauges pop right up. Good luck! ~Ron
I ordered the 16v capacitors, and I'm looking for a fine point soldering iron. This is going to be a rewarding project..... it is a 2005 XB with 95,000 MILES, garage kept in South Florida.
So, I'm watching TH-cam VIDEOS about replacing Electrolytic Capacitors and they say that between years 2000 and 2010 there were many faulty manufactured ASIAN Capacitors...... That explains WHY we are dealing with this problem. UREKA.... RON..did you melt the CAPS off or BREAK them??????? I'm thinking of SNIPPING them.... What do you think???
I got the CAPS, you specified..... OMG are those soldering legs TINY, and don't stick out far, if at all.... Was there a different brand, that I could have ordered that would have given me a larger soldering area??????
Hey there Jason. So you may have something else going with your hazards. I didn't have any issues with my hazards and I haven't heard from anyone else having this issue either. Just so I can understand a little better what you're experiencing. Are you referring to the lights on the console or are your external lights staying on? By on, do you mean flashing or steady on?
I’m located in Central Florida. Any chance I can ship my board to you and you fix it. Obviously, I’ll pay for your labor. I’ve dealing with this issue a long time ago. Actually my brothers XB has the same problem. So, It would be two boards.
Hey there John. I appreciate your confidence in me, but honestly, I wouldn't want to be responsible for your board. Also, I wouldn't have any way to test it after changing out the caps. Where in Central Florida are you? I am in the Spring Hill/Brooksville area. ~Ron

Hey Steve all good and you're very welcome. My repaired dash is still going strong and you can see from the other comments, it seems to be working for others. So after you fix yours please let us know how things turn out. Good luck! ~Ron
worked! thank you!
hey there CrabbyDad! Great to hear and thank you for letting us all know. Take care ~Ron
Holy crap now I know why my battery would go dead sometimes too!
ty.✌
AWESOME! Thank you. I have three and have already spent too much on trying to fix this issue.
Hello Jorge! You're very welcome and I hope this helps you. Yeah I almost went the route of buying a used one on eBay, but I am happy I gave this a go and it worked for me. Over two weeks and the dash lights are bright, no flashing or dimming, and the gauges pop right up when I turn the key. Good luck!! ~Ron
Thank you sir 🙏 mine is the same way
I just subbed! Thank you! I have the exact same problem with my 05 scion xb! Oh my gosh, I’m gonna do this as well. Can you just purchase the mother board? I w I’ll order from the same company, but hopefully I can find a video to learn how to solder. ❤
I can't wait to try this mine was doing the same. Thank you.👏🏾👏🏾. Will keep you updated.
You're welcome WBIII and good luck! Yes please let us know how it goes for you. ~Ron
~Ron
Get a pin-point soldering iron and a second set of hands. Have someone else hold the CAP down.
You can test the capacitors in circuit with ESR meter. The one I use is a MESR-100 ESR Meter. They're inexpensive
Excelente información, hasce una hora cambie los capacitores que indica, hoy funciona al 100%, gracias por la información!
De nada mi amigo y estoy feliz de que te haya ayudado! ~Ron
Capacitadores donde los consigo

Ordered From: www.digikey.com
Capacitor Part Numbers:
PCE4534CT-ND -- CAP ALUM 100UF 16V -- PANASONIC (2 Each) -- {The two I replaced!}
does anyone's maintenance require light also flickering along with the dashboard?
Hello Pei! So my dash lights would also "flicker" and they were dim too prior to replacing those two CAPS. After I replaced them, they are very bright and no more "flickering".
221,000 miles!!!! Amazing🤯
Yes almost 222,000 and all good. Hoping for another 200,000 miles as well. :-)
Are you in East South Florida by chance? I need to hire someone to do this for me!
Does anyone know what is the recommended solder iron wattage to use when soldering the capacitors? Thank you fellow scion owners!
Do you know how to re assembly the odo knob!? I broke down mine, and now Idk how to re assembly!🙆♂️
Thank you so much for this!!!❤
Hey there Wooly Bully Banana Peel!!
So when ordering it cut tape or digi-reel
I swapped the 3 capacitors and the disks work, but now my LCD display has a mind of its own. It doesn't respond to the control pin and I can't read my odometer. Does anyone else have this problem?
Hello Hydrolix! I wonder if by chance when you put the board back together that maybe you bent one of the pins. Look at minute 6:14ish and right near my thumb are a series of pins in the plastic. You may want to carefully pull it apart and check that none of them are bent down. ~Ron
Hi i am having the same problem what was the part number u bought to fixed the problem and thank u !!!!
~Ron
Where did you find the capacitors? Thank you for this!
@@ThirteenthPirate Everything is under the description of the video.
@@bubpiper4028 Awesome and please let us all know how it goes. Fingers are crossed for you. Good luck! ~Ron
For someone who isn’t quite as handy, do you think getting an entire used cluster from eBay is still a smart idea to try?
Hi my hazard lights of my car keep staying on do I have to remove to the fuse box to temporarily get my hazard lights off ? Or the relay switch?
Hey there Jason. So you may have something else going with your hazards. I didn't have any issues with my hazards and I haven't heard from anyone else having this issue either. Just so I can understand a little better what you're experiencing. Are you referring to the lights on the console or are your external lights staying on? By on, do you mean flashing or steady on?
Hi Ron would you consider me mailing you my board or complete cluster and you fix mine for a good fee ? Thanks
Thank you so much
You're very welcome! Let us know how your repair goes. ~Ron
~Ron
So grateful for this video, it seems like the problem I'm having is a common one. However, as soon as I saw the screwdriver: th-cam.com/video/6I3VhsQ5Bro/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ThQRBo7BHipxunTx
hahaha very funny Josh! Yeah that is my long screwdriver, but for making the video I think it worked best. Thank you for the comment and all the best getting your console working. Mine is still going strong. Take care and Happy New Year! ~Ron
