I've seen Yes 4 times in concert. I think the best one was in 1974. I was about 50 feet from Rick Wakeman on keyboards. I really did float out of the arena! The best venue was in a smaller outdoor amphitheater in Santa Fe. That was the mid 90s. I had a hard time keeping my mind on the road during the drive home!

When you get to the song "Close to the Edge”.... Studio version first.
Each of us only gets one chance to hear this magic the first time. Don't squander it on a live version.
Same advice for the song "Awaken"
    And ”Gates of Delirium”
Studio versions first, you won't regret it. Cheers! 😊

100% Agreed. Classic Rock is too important for the first impression not to be the album version. If the group recorded the song, picked it for their album, that is the best way to hear it.... Then, make sure you're blown away watching it performed LIVE

The virtuoso keyboard player here, Rick Wakeman, was a fellow pupil and used to play the organ each morning during the daily religious assemblies at my school in West London in the 60s. The inventiveness and sheer stunning musical skill is just stunning. On another planet from most other rock bands.

I'm an old fellow, having a jolly good time watching a new Yes fan in the making. Magic is one way to describe them -- they write music for the Soul, the Heart. They have a way of getting into your head. I will happily aid in your binging.
Short and Sweet: Wonderous Stories, Holy Lamb, Onward,
Hidden Gems: That, That Is, Homeworld, Turn of the Century (You mentioned paintings -- this one is based on Pygmailion & Galitea -- maybe my favorite of all Yes songs.)
Yes Controversy: You only need side one and side four of Tales From Topographic Oceans -- but for sheer epicness, it's hard to beat The Revealing Science of God (side one) and Ritual (side four)
Summary: Binge as deep as you want, wander wherever you choose. You''ll hit some duds on the side roads, but you'll also bump into Olias of Sunhillow.
Happy journeys, my young Yes friend. Your smile as you listen brings many of us Yes fans back to the days when our hair stood on end when we heard Perpetual Change. Some of us miss the hair we had back then.

@JMBOYTV , I think @AliasMark69 nailed it when he said "MAGIC". I have also been to 4 YES concerts.... imagine this scenario during the "Close To The Edge" tour.... the band has transitioned into one of the instrumental only songs...the lights had gone down to focus on just Rick Wakeman and Bill Bruford, so it is pitch black... and out of nowhere Jon Anderson's voice starts singing, quietly at first....but you can't see him. Slowly a new spotlight starts shining on the top of the speaker tower, 50 feet above the stage, Jon had climbed the speaker tower and was sitting on the top speaker singing as the lights came up and the band goes full tilt. You float (not walk) out of their concerts, partly because of the music and partly because of the herbs you had brought to the concert.... INCREDIBLE!!!!!!

    "And You And I'
A man conceived a moment's answers to the dream
Staying the flowers daily, sensing all the themes
As a foundation left to create the spiral aim
A movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Changed only for a sight of sound, the space agreed
Between the picture of time behind the face of need
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you, oh
Coins and crosses never know their fruitless worth
Cords are broken, locked inside the mother earth
They won't hide, oh, they won't tell you
Watching the world, watching all of the world
    Watching us go by
And you and I climb over the sea to the valley
And you and I reached out for reasons to call
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid
As a movement regained and regarded both the same
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Sad preacher nailed upon the colored door of time
Insane teacher be there, reminded of the rhyme
There'll be no mutant enemy we shall certify
Political ends, as sad remains, will die
Reach out as forward tastes begin to enter you
    Ooh, ooh
I listened hard but could not see
Life tempo change out and inside me
    The preacher trained in all to lose his name;
The teacher travels, asking to be shown the same
In the end, we'll agree, we'll accept, we'll immortalize
That the truth of the man maturing in his eyes
All complete in the sight of seeds of life with you
Coming quickly to terms of all expression laid
As a moment regained and regarded both the same
Emotion revealed as the ocean maid
A clearer future, morning, evening, nights with you
And you and I climb, crossing the shapes of the morning
And you and I reach over the sun for the river
And you and I climb, clearer towards the movement
And you and I called over valleys of endless seas

This performance is from the 1991 Union tour, which combined the two competing versions of Yes after the highly successful Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe album and tour from 1989. Musically they pulled it off, but there were tensions on the tour after a listless album, both of which were the result of a compromise between the two camps. I don't know how they managed to perform so flawlessly with so much chaos onstage, with two drummers, two guitarists and two keyboardists. Yes has a very interesting history, but it is generally agreed that their best albums are from the 1970s. They put out some fantastic music after that but most post-1980 albums were hit-and-miss. Some of the band members' solo albums are more interesting. Glad you found Yes! It's a deep rabbit holes with many wandering warrens. Enjoy

Hey JMBOY glad you're reacting to YES but I always advise newcomers to any artist not just YES to *always* listen to the *original* and official *studio* recordings of an artist work before listening to any live reinterpretations. It's my opinion that newcomers should get acquainted with the originals first then live. LIve should be the second step *not* the first. The studio is where they spent time crafting and perfecting the material. Also sometimes there are things that can be done in studio that aren't replicated as well in a live setting. I'm not against live but I don't feel it should be the introduction. That all being said I would love to see you react to the studio versions of "Yours Is No Disgrace' 'Starship Trooper' "South Side of The Sky' 'Heart of The Sunrise'. The wasted footage of those stupid images is just a crime when they could have shown Steve working that slide. His musicianship is beyond the pale, and compositionally, he's on par with Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach. Hundreds of years from now, this music will be on recognized with all the greatest classical pieces. It's amazing how overlooked they are in the mainstream, but most people don't have the consciousness to understand YES, and even more the intelligence.
