Jon Anderson, in person, has an incredible aura. He sincerely loves every fan. He held my hand for a whole song back in the late 70s…heaven. The vibes coming off that man..the whole band is the same way. To kind, humble and so down to earth.

I blasted this song on my way to take the NY Bar exam, it put me in the most positive, ready to kick ass place and got me ready to channel all my energy into meeting the challenge....and then I passed it!!! Just one of the many, many, many times Yes was there for me in my life in the best way possible.

Squire's backing vocals are genius. And to think he does it live while playing the bass as well boggles the mind.
RIP Alan White from two weeks ago.
RIP Chris Squire from 7 years ago.

...AND Chris Squire would often play Moog taurus pedals with his feet at the same time (a full octave of a keyboard for the feet, basically). He was a legendary musician.

This was a great album - released in 1977, quite a contrast to the punk albums that exploded on the scene that year: The Clash "The Clash", Sex Pistols "Never Mind The Bollocks", Ramones "Rocket To Russia", The Damned "Damned Damned Damned"...

I bought this with my first ever weeks wages on the day that it came out in 77 and my reaction to the opening track was similar to you own. Listening to Chris's walking bass part, walking patiently up and down the scales during the whole tagged outro is the most hilarious part of this amazing song. It makes me laugh everytime. It is even more promenant on the live version. The real jaw dropper on this album is of course
'Awaken', one of their most sublime epics, you must check it out.

Going for the One is a favorite of mine, most of the original band were back together after talent issues - because they all were. This album was a little like they wanted to go back to the Close to Edge era, and the album feels like it is going for it. If you do want to revisit this album, I recommend Awaken, 15 minutes that builds into something quite connecting if not emotional. From the comments below you see these members did appear all over the place. Still I think when they were Yes, they had a very unique sound, always positive.... Thanks for review, I look forward to more reviews from you.

I've been listening to this song since 1977. I still sing along to it at the top of my lungs in my car. I don't care who hears me. It's such an uplifting song. I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't realize for a long time that Chris Squire is singing in the background "open the windows".

I think you can equate Yes to painter artist ...rather than a canvas the paint their music with every texture and hue that humanity has ever seen at this point their instruments from Jon's voice to ricks keys the instruments were the paint brushes and their imaginations and the colors were a palette of never ending color ...to sum them up

I think "Relayer" was the absolute peak of Yes' creativity as a progressive ("prog") band. So at the time of this album's release, I found it a disappointing step back and the beginning of a tendency to tread water while trying to win back fans and critics who were put off by the creative experimentation that made "Relayer" and the earlier "Tales From Topographic Oceans" so richly rewarding. On "Relayer", Patrick Moraz had been an exciting addition to the group, but the return of stodgy, beer-sodden Rick Wakeman, who'd left because he was unhappy with the direction Yes was taking on "Tales", meant a return to familiar territory such as the idea that "progressive" still meant playing cathedral organ on a rock record. The title itself hints at a desire by the band to take a bigger stab at chart success. The next album, "Tormato", would mark an even more drastic step in their creative decline.

After the long format songs of the previous three albums (Close to the Edge - 3 songs, Tales from Topographic Oceans - 4 songs on two discs, and Relayer - 3 songs,) the opening to Going for the One proved to everyone that the band could write and perform an economically short, punchy rocker. What a way to open an album! There are several good live recordings of this tune as well and some of those performances are freaking amazing. It's a good question: why isn't this music more popular? 1) many of their best work tends to be longer than many peoples' attention span 2) lyrically they are heady and complex 3) people just "don't know!" Some deep cuts that might interest you - "Sound Chaser" from Relayer (the whole album is nuts crazy good,) "South Side of the Sky" from Fragile, "Perpetual Change" from The Yes Album - maybe check out the Yessongs live recording from 1973. It features a drum solo from the then drummer Bill Bruford. I'm impressed that in these days of reaction videos that a lot of younger folk are hearing this odd band called "YES" and are asking the same question: "Why aren't they more popular?"

  • @jimpatrick5918

I bought this on my way home from school ~1980 on cassette.
As soon as that opening riff played, I popped the tape out of the player to make sure I hadn't got the wrong album.
    Nope.
IMO, this is their best album. It's got the most variety in mood, tone and length. Plus the cathedral acoustic and organ. Rick hits those sharp notes during the quiet part of _Awaken_ and you hear the echo and reverberations skittering around the acoustic space.
The largest number of songs that bring tears to my eyes to this day.
And the best piece of music I've ever heard: _Awaken_

I’m just getting into Yes myself….was never into prog much in the 70’s. But have listened to maybe 10 of their songs. The more commercial cuts This one I haven’t heard…seems like a fairly deep cut. I will be interested in your Yes journey as it will be mine also. I would second the suggestion for the album Olias of Sunhillow, a solo project of Andersen. But I leave it to others to suggest a track, as it’s a concept album

To truly appreciate this song, watch the recording sessions of this album. Every part gets broken down, along with the harmonies.

"The meaning of the lyrics for Going For The One doesn't matter"? Whoever said that should instead " The lyrics are simply beyond my comprehension, and so I should just not even try." So sick of people throwing off Anderson's lyrics.

For us, original Yes listeners, this album was very bad news They had given up. This is no longer Yes. Yes ended with Relayer. But you won't understand.

The first concert that I ever paid for was Yes, touring this album. It was amazing.

02:00 Chris Squire isn't playing an 8-string bass on this song. Careful about information you read from youngsters writing rock reviews, or even their interviews with elderly rockers who were blazed through the '70s.

I really enjoyed your reaction on this one. I love this song and this album. I’m not sure anything could prepare you for Awaken. Looking forward to that for sure!

Know what the crazy thing is? Every single other song on that album is BETTER.

Such power. And despite that explosiveness, it is beautiful. Those steel tones are unmatched. Derrick &Dominoes comes close, but nowhere near the complexity

I've always loved "And You And I" - it's one of their longer epics, but a gorgeous song!

I have been a Yes fan from the beginning of time... but to me, this album is harsh! Especially the keys. I also find the slide guitar very annoying. That said, Squires bass and Jons vox are always genius!
