☀️🌎 I would call Close to the Edge a modern day Symphony. 🌏☀️
💫 For 50 years now that opinion has never changed. I am just as moved by it now as I was in 1972.
It IS a masterpiece, brilliant and otherworldly. 💫
🌬️ As an aside, I have had a change of opinion over Relayer, which is an album of chaos and resolution and was beyond my comprehension at the time.
As a high school girl, I wasn't that interested in war and history, so the full impact of ⚡Relayer⚡ eluded me for decades. Over much time however, becoming aware and gaining knowledge of Earth's more modern wars and the world conflicts this planet and it's people have endured, learning more of wars we studied in school, to those of My era, the ending of the Vietnam War in 1975, to Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom and beyond, recently Relayer has had much more of an impact on me than ever. 📹There is a Relayer video on TH-cam, if you search Relayer, visualization and lyrics, you should find one created by a Russian guy named Igor Kovtun.
It was powerful, well done and magnificent. My heart was pounding by the time it was over. He also did a video of Close to the Edge. There are a couple (probably more) ways to interpret CTTE, and the more dramatic, chaotic movements, I prefer to think of the dramatic and chaotic sections to be the formation of Earth, with asteroids and meteorites slamming onto the Earth's surface, along with earthquakes, floods, typhoons, and volcanic eruptions, rather than war (again). Either way, Relayer is not for casual listening like throwing it on while you're driving to work, lol. YES is not listened to, it is experienced, and if you get dragged down the rabbit hole, YES will change you. If you don't believe me, just ask fellow Reactors POPE. and Jamel_AKA_Jamal

I know I am super duper bias towards Yes, but to me there is no group comparable to them! Seen them about 100 times in 70's and there was nothing like a live Yes show! I still remember the first time, looking at my friends in amazement as we could not believe how good they sounded. We thought it might be hard to duplicate this complex music live, boy were we ever wrong. Listening live was even better than the studio albums. Love Heart of the Sunrise and your reaction to it. Your just touching the tip of the iceberg! So much more great stuff for you to listen too! 😁

I also saw several YES live shows over the years and like you, I was amazed at the live reproduction sound. In the early 70's Eddie Offord (their engineer/producer at the time) also toured with the band. After parting ways the live sound quality was never quite up to the level of the Eddie years, even when they returned to play some of the smaller auditoriums.

It makes me very happy to see the smile on your face as you discover this music. After all these years the music still holds up and to see the younger generations still be blown away by it is great. Yes...our minds were truly blown when this music was new. I had no idea what I was listening to at first, but the music holds up and it's still a joy to listen to. Jon Anderson, the vocalist and lyricist is a beautiful soul and I can see him reaching you even though the lyrics are hard to decifer.

When I first heard this song and album in '71, it blew my mind and greatly influenced my music. Over 50 years later it still brings me great joy to listen to. The singer Jon Anderson is about to begin a US tour with The Band Geeks (an interesting story) to perform the music of Yes. Looking forward to your future Yes reactions. An amazing world awaits you.

The drummer is Bill Bruford, who left Yes at the peak of their fame to play with King Crimson, another pioneering Prog band. The bass player is the incomprable Chris Squire (RIP!) Steve Howe plays guitar here, and during this time period began his winning of Guitar Player Magazine's "Best Overall Guitarist" five years in a row, and he was the reason GP Magazine came up with their "Gallery of Greats," taking Steve out of the running in the future. Keyboards are Rick Wakeman who was performing with David Bowie, as well as being an extremely busy session player (later he was featured on a Black Sabbath album!). He was invited to join Bowie's "Spiders from Mars," but decided to join Yes. And nobody compares to Jon Anderson, whose voice can be both soft and commanding, all at the same time. Yes is my all-time favorite band.

So glad you’ve started your ‘Yes’ journey. (The Masters of Prog’ Rock). As I mentioned in your ‘Roundabout’ reaction, You are in for some ride. Yes are my all time favourite Band. (Along with Pink Floyd). This track Heart of The Sunrise’, is from Yes’ 4th Album, ‘Fragile’. It was keyboard player, the great Rick Waksman’s first Album with the Band. (He was Classically Trained). I did also say you should really take your time and check out their history and slowly work your way through the Albums. There is just way too much phenomenal music and there are too many Masterpieces to hear, in my view. I know you have great suggestions by others, but here’s a few of my own too.
I’ve been a Yes fan since age 14, when I heard their 3rd Album, ‘The Yes Album’, in 1971. Hearing ‘Yours is No Disgrace’, I’ve Seen All Good People, Starship Trooper and the rest of the Album, I’d heard nothing like it before. Jon Anderson’s incredible unique voice just gave me goosebumps, Chris Squire’s amazing bass, Steve Howe’s scintillating guitars, lead and acoustic, (Steve had replaced Peter Banks) and Bill Bruford’s mind blowing drums. Tony Kaye was awesome on keyboards too, he was replaced by Rick Wakeman of course, after this Album.
(The great Alan White replaced Bill Bruford on drums after the 5th Album, ‘Close To The Edge’, until Alan sadly passed away last year, in 2022).
After hearing ‘The Yes Album’, I immediately checked out their history and bought the first 2 Albums. (‘Yes’ and ‘Time and a Word’). I think you could sense the direction they were heading. I first saw them Live in 1973, at my hometown venue, Leicester’s ‘De Montfort Hall’, UK.
They were formed in 1968. I, like many others here, love the 70’s Albums the best. ‘The Yes Album’, ‘Fragile’, ‘Close To The Edge’, ‘Tales From Topographic Oceans’, ‘Relayer’ and ‘Going For The One’. There are just too many Classic Masterpieces, which are pure genius, to mention. The masters of long tracks, many made up of ‘Movements’.
But my own personal favourite tracks from this group of Albums, ‘Yours is No Disgrace’, I’ve Seen All Good People, Starship Trooper, from (The Yes Album). ‘Roundabout’, ‘Heart of the Sunrise’, ‘South Side Of The Sky’, from (Fragile). ‘Close To The Edge’, ‘And You And I’, ‘Siberian Khatru’, from (Close To The Edge). ‘The Revealing Science Of God’, from (Tales From Topographic Oceans). Well you’ll have to listen to all 4 sides of (Tales From Topographic Oceans) really. ‘The Gates Of Delirium’, ‘Sound Chaser’, ‘To Be Over’ from (Relayer). And ‘Turn Of The Century’, ‘Wondrous Stories’ and of course, ‘Awaken’, from (Going For The One’). Awaken is my all time fav’. Just phenomenal.
I do love so much more of the Yes Albums that followed too, but that 70’s era was the best for me personally.
I was lucky enough to see the Steve Howe version of Yes in 2014, with both Chris Squire and Alan White, (who are both sadly no longer with us, Chris Squire passed away in 2015).
I was then fortunate enough to see the other formation, YES-featuring-ARW. (Anderson, Rabin, Wakeman), in 2017 and then in 2018, celebrating Yes’ 50th Anniversary. What fabulous Shows. I’m hoping to see Jon Anderson this summer, (2023), with the ‘Paul Green Rock Academy’. He has toured already in the US, with these fabulous young musicians, performing many great ‘Classic Yes Songs’. Jon Anderson’s voice still sounds incredible, aged 78. And he’s still making new music.
These are all just my own personal feelings here and I know a lot won’t agree. But I thought I’d share anyway and try to help you a little in selecting some absolute mind blowing pieces of Classic Prog’ Rock, by the Masters themselves, ‘YES’.
    Enjoy. 🎶❤️🎶

When they went out on a concert tour to promote this album they played it on a stage that was round and would slowly spin around in the centre of the arena, with the drummer in the centre of the stage. When they played their songs they sounded exactly, note for note, like on the album. They were all business, nearly 3 hours of music, each a classic master piece now. During that time you had other concerts that were more rock and roll, with a lot of band having killer lead guitarist and screaming vocals; then this band came along and their concerts sounded exactly like what you hear on the album. And at the time a lot of concerts had a smoky haze throughout -- you could get high just on the music, but with so much smoke going around you got high just by being there ... then this sound ... it was magical.

I saw them in concert in 1973 and Heart of the Sunrise was a stand out especially with the way the light show was synchronised with the different sections of the song - especially remember the 'Sharp - Distance' part where the lights pulsed on dramatically - remembering that back then such light shows in rock concerts were not the usual thing - all down to the wonderful work of Michael Tait who was responsible for it.

I especially liked the little comment about the piano sound so sophisticated... Well I guess it helped that Rick Wakeman went to the Royal College of Music, England's premier music college as you can tell by the name. I guess you would have heard the synthesiser sounds in amongst all that other stuff going on. Well, I think the synthesiser had only been out for 2 years at that point. And Rick was one of the early users. You now have another subscriber...!!!! Keep on Rocking.

Look at a painting by Claude Monet (Water lillies) for example, they are not EXACT, but Impressionistic. I view many of Anderson's lyrics that way. He conveys the emotion of what he's singing about lyrically, but its like an Impressionistic painting, its not exact.
Note: in the Gates of Delirium & Turn Of The Century, his lyrics are exact.

Yes has been my favorite band since 1978. I saw them twice in concert, and they are phenomenal. There are so many good tracks. Here are some more as you work your way up to Close to the Edge. Try 'A Venture', "Yours is no Disgrace", "Long Distance Runaround", "I've Seen All Good People" , then you can to "And You and I', then "Close to the Edge'. Then if you really like that, you can then graduate to the double album, Tales from Topographic Oceans, which only has 4 songs on it. (one song per album side).

As an old fart, hippy, progrock relic, retired musician, it warms my heart to see a Metal Junkie appreciate and comprehensively enjoy YES. No I'm not a famous person and the band I was in thrived in obscurity without commercial success. We did it for the goal of creativity in the musical doldrums of the early 1980's in Canada. Wrong time, wrong place Methinks. No regrets.
After this tune I had to check out to see if you reacted to Close to the Edge. A song that had a profound affect on me in 1975 as a young musician. I would like to ask for a request for you to react to, but no one ever does, so I'll just wait and see how it goes for you in the future. I like the deep tracks and the hidden gems that the mainstream music listening public don't listen to, so my requests never get upvoted. Good luck with your channel. Subscribed.

Yes. I just watched your reaction while having lunch. After almost 50 years of listening to this song, it never gets old and it's a song I return to when the chaos of our world overwhelms me sometimes. This song reminds me that there are ups and downs in life, to be more aware of my state of mind and to be in the moment more often to get balanced and centered.
Great reaction to Close to the Edge.
This song showed me what was possible in creating original music as a 15 year old with 11 years of private music lessons under my belt. I was never the same again as it also inspired to study philosophy and mysticism. I've been a weirdo ever since 🤣✌ 🕊

One of my favorite Yes songs. Definitely gives me King Crimson vibes. And it’s not that the lyrics don’t mean much, it’s just the meanings are mostly only known to Jon Anderson.

When you watch Bill Bruford play this song live, it's amazing how laid back he is, considering the tempo that he's playing. Almost can see him sipping a cup of tea with a third hand while banging away.

One of their most crazy pieces. Now you have to go to their longer pieces: The Ancient, Ritual, Gates of Delerium, Awaken, Sound Chaser, Close to The Edge.

It's younger people like you who give us hope that good music will not die. Not that all new music is bad. Actually, it's not. Older people, like myself, just need to go out and look for it too. It's goes both ways. I look forward to seeing you react to more of Yes and other progressive groups from the past (King Crimson, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc...). Enjoy the journey!

  • @Yesquire0

Bassist Chris Squire set out to present his own unique sound by turning up the treble control to "11". The drummer, Bill Bruford, felt his snare would go unnoticed next to the trebly bass, so he turned the screws up a notch or two and increased the pitch a bit. You can really hear the trebly bass and the slightly higher pitch on the snare drum in this fine Yes song.
It is odd to hear anybody call Yes "under-rated". They, along with Genesis and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, created the style of popular music we call "progressive rock" and are widely known for having done so. On the other hand, progessive rock fell out of fashion in the late '70's, and the music-buying public moved on to the "next big thing", which, at the time, was disco and grunge, supplanted later by hip-hop and rap, until the internet fractures everything to the point where they may never again be a "next big thing" that captures the interest of a wide audience. All genres are now effectively walled-off from each other. Whatever you love, you an find it 24/7 online and never listen to anything else. Kudos to you for venturing outside the metal genre to discover the magic of Yes. If you weren't alive and loving music in 1975, I suppose you could conclude that Yes is some sort of obscure band that nobody knows about..

I grew up on this band and Pink Floyd.. People thought I was a freak.. well the girls did anyway... I was actually introduced to them via Fragile.. My all time favorite though is Gates of Delirium Off of the Relayer album.. another Up and down song about war. But dont neglect Pinkk Fployd with INHO.. the greatest guitar solo of all time.. See the Pulse video of this.. I wont give it away.. let someone else do it.. this is about YES!.

I love Yes and this entire album. But I think a more fully realized version of the super-rapid-fire rhythm that Yes uses here was employed a year or two earlier by King Crimson on '21st Century Schizoid Man.' That's a highly entertaining track.

Lots of great musicians and writers out there, these five guys are best ever in one band. I saw them when I was 14/15 in the 70's and some more times after. All of there music is complex yet they pull it off and add more sections live.

Have you heard Yes, The Gates of Delirium yet? It's side 1 of Relayer.
Don't miss Quicksilver Messenger Service... try Calvary and Edward The Mad Shirt Grinder.
Don't miss King Crimson! Robert Fripp formed the band and reforms it every so often. Start with 1969 - 21st Century Schizoid Man
Don't miss Rush, try La Villa Strangiato or the instrumental Leave That Thing Alone which is so suggestive it is LEWD music!

"Fragile" is their 4th album. Second album with Steve Howe, and first with Rick Wakeman. My favorite lineup of the band - same with their next album "Close to the Edge" which was the last for Bill Bruford until "Union" (1991) which was unique in how it merged two bands.
Jon Anderson - lead and backing vocals
Steve Howe - electric and acoustic guitars, backing vocals
Chris Squire - bass guitars, backing vocals
Rick Wakeman - Hammond organ, grand piano, RMI 368 Electra-Piano and Harpsichord, Mellotron, Minimoog synthesiser
    Bill Bruford - drums, percussion

I know what you're experiencing as you take the journey through YES' 1971-1972 Uber-Classic Period. They just kept producing these _experimental_ masterpieces, filled with complexity, the mix of which was perfected at the sound board. _Definitely_ agree with your decision to put off Close To the Edge until you've sampled all/most of their masterpiece creations on the *The Yes Album* and *Fragile* albums. I would suggest that, since you've turned to the Fragile album with Heart Of The Sunrise, that you stay with this album & react to *South Side Of The Sky* which is another of their pre-CTTE masterpieces. Then maybe return to The Yes Album to have your mind blown by *Yours Is No Disgrace.* _Then_ you'll be ideally prepped for CTTE...😊

Bruford's last Yes album was CTTE. After some time in King Crimson, he was in the "supergroup" U.K. - but just for one (eponymous) album, as was guitarist (the late) Allan Holdsworth, who was often admiringly referred to as being "not human". Talk about some "shredding"...
