😂 the rags in the intake reminded me of my neighbor when I was a kid. He did that to everything he worked on. My dad had him rebuild a Packard automatic transmission, and he forgot some rags in it. One test drive, and dad converted the car to a manual. It was a beautiful 1954 black convertible Packard.
I had a 77 LTD 2 when I was younger and on the valve cover sticker it said 351/M400. Drove that car for 4yrs, put a boat load of miles on it! It had a rod knock for the 1st couple of seconds after you started it, but it ran like that since like a few months after I got it but it ran for years like that. It was still running when i sold it but the frame rotted in 2 so couldn't drive it any longer, loved that car! It was an LTD that had that "Starky and Hutch" stripe down the side, automatic on the floor, pretty cool car, bought it for 300 bucks in the late 80's.

With respect to the commentary about the 351W/351C/351M and the 427/428/429, it should be noted for anyone who doesn't know that Ford didn't classify engines by displacement, they're classified by design/family. So even though displacements may be identical or close to each other, they're all different, unique engines, hence why you couldn't swap many parts across them. Parts swapping *is* possible within each engine family, though.
It makes better business sense for parts to different displacement motors to be interchangeable? How so? Seems to me if you can snatch a part off another motor lying around than as far as business goes you just lost money because otherwise you would have to buy a part and your business makes money. I could be wrong, I did go to school for finance but this is more business model type stuff.
I was a licensed aircraft mechanic & worked on Bristol Freighters with Bristol Hercules sleeve valve engines. Rebuild shop left a red cotton shop rag in a cylinder. I was pulling bits of it out of the jug for hours after the sleeve valve diced it up
What was the advantage of having sleeve valves? I'd think it would make things more complicated. 🤔 I think my dad had a single cylinder cut-a-way model. I'm not sure if the sleeve was intending to move on it, only the piston moved.
Had a few of those Torinos growing up. That Cleveland will come ALIVE with a 650 Holley and electronic ignition. Had 2 /1971s and 2 / 1972s one was a 351cj 4speed ❤
Another thing I love about this channel, being over here in the UK quite a few cars I'm not familiar with turn up and that always adds an extra interest to it. Thanks Mort, great channel.

Tow truck tech tip. That T-handle sticking out of it toward the drivers side of the box. pull or push in and lock the winch will free spool. makes pulling it out to the car way easier.
Also, the 351 Cleveland came in two variations, maybe three if you count cams or valve train. There's a 2 bbl version with smaller chambers, and the 4bbl that had slightly larger chambers. The 4bbl had huge valves. The 2bbl still had big valves, only slightly smaller than the 4bbl. The four barrel was for higher rpm power, the 2 barrel was for low end. But both heads are great. They were wildly successful engines, once you modified some oiling problems. Even the 351m/400m have 600hp potential. They still make Cleveland type heads for small block engines.
Ford did a great job with their door latches. if you have 14 water pump and 28 brake caliper options for your f100 at least the 4 trips to Napa you can shut the door with confidence
Ain't that the truth? I've had about 25-30 Fords, and the different water pumps, calipers, master cylinders, brake boosters, etc, for the SAME YEAR, MODEL, AND ENGINE, can drive ya nuts!

@@MortskeRepair dude I could only wish to work with such a cool old man. I’m an old guy myself, but he reminds me of my childhood. My uncle was a great mechanic. I love your show bro love all your videos and I’m not some kind of freak either lol I watch your videos every time they come out I’m a truck driver been doing it 25 years, keep up the good work bro look up CTC auto ranch in Denton Texas and bring about 10 trailers with you. They got everything there 30s 40s 5060s and 70s and a few 80s cars nothing newer than that. Check it out you’ll like it Fryberger and Finnegan did a video therefrom the hot Rod magazine all right you tell Duff I said hi take it easy bro
this Torino reminds of a mad max car. Congratulations on getting this thing going, and it sounds good. Amazing work. really enjoyed this video. I am not a ford guy either.
@MortskeRepair Why do you answer comments with so much sarcasm all the time? You know as well as I do. If you're careful, you will not get water in everything or in the motor. It's not so much of the benefit of the motor being clean. But for you. Not getting as dirty, When you're working on it. That's all I was trying to say.
I'm not a Ford guy, but I've always thought highly of them. Ford didn't take the government bailout in 2008. GM and Chrysler did. Anyways, i like the looks of that Torino. Too bad it's such bad shape. I hope someone saves it.
Used to know a guy back in HS that had a '70 SCJ with a 428. Same color - that dark choco color. He said he could pull the front wheels off the ground with it but you know how that goes some times. Those stripes on the sides glow in the dark - pretty cool car!
The strut towers were fine on the Falcon for which they were designed. The majority of them had the little Thrift(Falcon) 6. Mustangs being the exception as most of them had 289's
Yeah!!! I had mentioned getting a hold of a Torino a few years ago when I first started watching you. My dad had a 1970 GT as well. It was supposed to be mine, but my mother scrapped it when I was 14. I never let her forget about how much I loved that car.
Great video! The engine sounds awesome! I caught his that 70s show reference. When Fez told Kelso he "would pay tens of dollars" for his ford delivery van. 😊
A lot of people in the 70s bolted the Cleveland heads onto the Windsor because they have canted valves. The Windsor has a bigger main journal at 3 inches than the Cleveland with the 2.75 main journal.
I was raised in Central Michigan and I delt with rust cars. If you have holes in the floor boards there's more than just surface rust. When there's holes in the quarter panels its more than surface rust
Good thing you pumped the water throughout the engine before you drained it most people remove the water before cranking the engine over a bunch of times but not Mortske he makes sure all the internals are filled with water before draining it that way the lifters are pumped up with water and all the bearings got cleaned so it will have great oil pressure.
Yeah, the Ford Mustang used ram assist PS up through about '73 IIRC. But Corvette used it from '63 all the way through '82. When your engine compartment is tight and you don't have much room between the exhaust manifold and the frame, you only had two choices back then: ram assist or rack and pinion. In '74 the Mustang II went with rack and pinion.
Laughed pretty hard at the rag under the carburetor thing. Reminds me of the times when I was younger and my dad and another guy on the farm used to prank each other, The old guy would stuff rags in his carb (sometimes stopped four times on the way home before he realized he was pranked)and my dad would tie giant rocks (boulders) to his steering wheel with bailing wire. There were many other pranks but those were the ones that stuck out in my memory especially after seeing this episode. Kind of like the classic hooking your horn to your break lol
I had a 1970 Torino GT with a 351C 4bbl, AC, PS, power front disc brakes and a column shifter back in 1978-1981. I would love to have one again, even a 71
Congrats Mort, you were mostly right on you description of the 351 saga, but I gotta tell ya you got a big C...Clevland OhiO, Yea!!It didn`t last long because it had an oiling problem. I worked at Ford in the early 70s and there was daily at lest 2 or three getting main bearings replaced in the dealership. so Ford engineers 'modified' the oiling system, hence, The Modified, and they put a big block bell housing on it. Then all they did was put a stroker crank in it and wala, da 400 big boy. My dream car I got was a 70 country squire with very faded woody sides. Interior very clean , body straight, 4v engine locked solid. I horse traded a 351c 2v heads and a bare block and a total rebuild kit , slammed it together stuffed it in da wagon and used the 4 v 2 1/4 factory exhaust . sounded GREAT, It had a 3;00 L(imited slip) so it hooked and hauled . I got it to use as a shop 'truck ' to replace my 71 one ton 4 door with a 428 and 4:11 gears ( about 5mpg) and now I`m getting 9mpg. I found a GT hood and hide a way headlites. Took it on a road trip to Oklahoma and got 12 mpg with my daughter in teh back telling me ever 15--20 miles....."daddy, I gootta go potty." So I made super time and mileage on that one., From then on I bought a motor home , so when I head the "Daddy I got" I said "OK go" and I went down the road.
23:12 with enough raw torque it doesn't matter if you're open or posi. Buddy of mine in high school bought someone else's project 67 Mustang that had a hotrod 351w/c6 combo in it. That thing, stuck in 2nd gear, with an open rear, on a 3500 stall converter, would indeed smoke both of 'em from a roll. 'Course it would diff out as well, but still. With enough engine you can get two wheel peels out of opens.
Congratulations on the start of the Torino. Definitely a project car. You mentioned the spark plugs how hard they were. I Had a 1969Torino Cobra. 428 Had to jack the engine to change the rear ones. You can flip for a song as a project car. Thanks for sharing! 💯👍👊
My kid ended up with a free ford taurus back a couple years ago. It needed plugs. We pulled the upper plenum off to get at the back ones. Anywhere it was getting late so I stuffed paper towels down the holes. Then my kid cranked it over and sucked all the paper towels into the engine. It was fine. Had it been red rags it would have been curtains for the old 3 liter. Nice video as always!
Moved a building just like that on an old mobile home frame trailer 18 miles down gravel. Said we would just push it in the ditch and burn it if we had problems. Duff said he might not have thumbs but he has some balls
Sir Morticus, the Windsor 351 is the motor that was used to make the "BOSS" 302 . It was a sleeved windsor with a special cam or maybe my memory went down a rabbit hole...
YOUR MISSING THE FUNKY ALUMINUM SPACER FORD USED ON A SHEETLOAD OF CARS WITH THE 2BBL AUTOLITE.ABOUT AN INCH THICK, HAD A BIG PORT FOR BRAKE BOOSTER TOO.

I have a Crower Monarch in a 283. nice rumpity idle. The motor is a 64 Impala 283 2 barrel that was a totaled car in 1965. The local dealership gave it and the powerglide to our high school which the metal shop used in a parade float until the early 90s. My buddy got the glide and i got the motor in 1994. His uncle had the Monarch cam on a shelf in his garage . The cam had been in a 327 Vega wagon and was put on the shelf in the late 70s til I got it. Anyway its a cool vintage cam that Crower actually still sells.
Back in 1970 my best friends dad bought a brand new 70 Torino Cobra Jet. 428 with a C6. It was white with blue interior and it had the factory rear window louvers. It was always garaged and he rarely drove it. He had a 73 IIRC Ford F-250 that he drove all the time. I still remember when he took us for a ride. Man that car ran hard, even if it was a Ford 🙂
My mom had a '71 Torino with a 302, was a beautiful metallic brown color with a red oxidized primer fender, it had cragars of course and rear air shocks lol.
My Blue Heeler "Thelma" has a major crush on Duff. Evry time I play one of your videos she recognizes your voice and watches for him. Barks at the TV every time he has a screen shot.
Ok. That’s a first. Hauling a building with a roll back 🤣 Whatever gets the job done right? Great job getting that crusty old Torino running. Too bad there’s not much left. Bet she was a cool car back in her day. Thanks Mortske!!
351W was from the Windsor lineup with the 6-bolt small block pattern, the 351 Cleveland was a 335 series small block with a big block bolt pattern, the 351M was also a 335 series originally stroked to 400. When the 351C was phased out the 351M reverted to the Cleveland stroke. Both had the big block bolt pattern. The 427 and 428 were FE engines, 427 was designed for high RPM race applications, the 428 was the mass market version with better torque and lower RPM ranges. The 429 and 460 were derived from the 385 series and became the king of Ford power in the muscle car era. Side note, 460's can be bored and stroked to 557ci, the MOPAR 440 can make it to 541, but poor old Chebby MkIV 454 can only make it to 511 and that is just a few casings from 69-73. MkIV's from the 1974 to 1990 can only make it to 496. The Gen V/IV engines are just boat anchors, as Fuzzy Dice has discovered.
@@_Frank_the_Tank The Windsor was the everyday design from the late 50's. The 355 was more of a commercial application and was a mid 60's design. The 351C, when built right, will out perform the Windsor. The M was just coat hangar abortion of a bad idea. 351C had MONSTER torque possibilities beyond the Windsor, hense it use in medium duty and heavy duty trucks. But a lot of drag guys loved it. The 351M, actually a 400, just liked to break rods.
😂 the rags in the intake reminded me of my neighbor when I was a kid. He did that to everything he worked on. My dad had him rebuild a Packard automatic transmission, and he forgot some rags in it.
MOJO is tha MAN!!!!! =Steak dinners
this Torino reminds of a mad max car. Congratulations on getting this thing going, and it sounds good. Amazing work. really enjoyed this video. I am not a ford guy either.
Probably wouldn't hurt to power Wash the motor off before you started to work on it, just saying.😊
why would I wash something if we didn't even know if it was any good? To fill it with more water?
@MortskeRepair Why do you answer comments with so much sarcasm all the time? You know as well as I do. If you're careful, you will not get water in everything or in the motor. It's not so much of the benefit of the motor being clean. But for you. Not getting as dirty, When you're working on it. That's all I was trying to say.
I'm not a Ford guy, but I've always thought highly of them. Ford didn't take the government bailout in 2008. GM and Chrysler did. Anyways, i like the looks of that Torino. Too bad it's such bad shape. I hope someone saves it.
Wow, for being such a steaming pile, that engine sure sounded good during the burnout!
Used to know a guy back in HS that had a '70 SCJ with a 428. Same color - that dark choco color. He said he could pull the front wheels off the ground with it but you know how that goes some times. Those stripes on the sides glow in the dark - pretty cool car!
Sweet
428SCJs would have been Mustangs and Cougars, in 1970. 429SCJS would have been the Torino’s and Mercury Cyclone’s
I just read one the other day that said the 429 didn't come out with the Torino until '71.
@@gr8xr7
The strut towers were fine on the Falcon for which they were designed. The majority of them had the little Thrift(Falcon) 6. Mustangs being the exception as most of them had 289's
Yeah!!! I had mentioned getting a hold of a Torino a few years ago when I first started watching you. My dad had a 1970 GT as well. It was supposed to be mine, but my mother scrapped it when I was 14. I never let her forget about how much I loved that car.
Dude I freaking love that dog he's such a good boy an hrs unique looking too
Another fantastic Mortske Monday, thanks to you Duff, Mojo and Chin.
Great video! The engine sounds awesome!
I caught his that 70s show reference. When Fez told Kelso he "would pay tens of dollars" for his ford delivery van. 😊
A lot of people in the 70s bolted the Cleveland heads onto the Windsor because they have canted valves. The Windsor has a bigger main journal at 3 inches than the Cleveland with the 2.75 main journal.
interesting
I was raised in Central Michigan and I delt with rust cars. If you have holes in the floor boards there's more than just surface rust. When there's holes in the quarter panels its more than surface rust
Good thing you pumped the water throughout the engine before you drained it most people remove the water before cranking the engine over a bunch of times but not Mortske he makes sure all the internals are filled with water before draining it that way the lifters are pumped up with water and all the bearings got cleaned so it will have great oil pressure.
My little magnetic "Got screwed by Mortske" screwdriver is coming in handy already with mower carb stuff. Gotta love that.
dang right!
In '74 the Mustang II went with rack and pinion.
way to stick with until she runs!!!thanks again for another great monday!
Always!
I would love to have one again, even a 71
Pull up to a camp site with a garage on a roll back. That would be a flex people wouldn’t forget! Take the pickup camper to whole new level!
💯👍👊
The 69 was much better looking and sleeker. The ULTIMATE Fastback.
The roll back with a garage on it is still better than the crap Washington states allows on the road!!! Great Video Thank you
Right on
My kid ended up with a free ford taurus back a couple years ago. Nice video as always!
classic!
Mojo you tell him! It’s still just a Ford. Great video!
Torino sounds good with the side pipes ! Moving that building was cool to watch ! Take care !
That "By the power of GreySkull" cracks me up every time! 😂
I had a 71 Mach1 351 Cleveland and I did 150 in Death Valley in the early 80s
YOUR MISSING THE FUNKY ALUMINUM SPACER FORD USED ON A SHEETLOAD OF CARS WITH THE 2BBL AUTOLITE.ABOUT AN INCH THICK, HAD A BIG PORT FOR BRAKE BOOSTER TOO.
That’s a cool Torino! My best friend in high school had one with the Cleveland. We drove 90+ to Florida for Spring break.
Norman Rockwell missed the boat
Guys getting together doing projects with what equipment on hand. Building move was fun
Once again informative and entertaining. Thanks Tom
You gave a whole new meaning to Motor Home at the end, Mortske!
Awesome!
Moving the building on the rollback was pure genius. 👍🏻
Thank you
My mom had a '71 Torino with a 302, was a beautiful metallic brown color with a red oxidized primer fender, it had cragars of course and rear air shocks lol.
My Blue Heeler "Thelma" has a major crush on Duff. Evry time I play one of your videos she recognizes your voice and watches for him. Barks at the TV every time he has a screen shot.
Hahaha
Thanks mortske 👍🏻
God jobb saving that old Torino
351 Cleveland engines sound great.
More fords pleas sir 😁
Greatings from Sweden 😉 2:12:23
Holy smokes!!!! Definitely safe to say that blue tarp did nuthin' to keep water out of the engine. Wow!! 😮
Chin didn't forget you, Hope you and your Blessed Family have a HAPPY, Peace out, Cheers, Thanks, "YO", Thumbs Up Guys!...
The R.A.A.C Edition Torino more & more common as the years roll by. This is going to be a fun one.
The Gen V/IV engines are just boat anchors, as Fuzzy Dice has discovered.
thanks for the info!
Why did Ford need three different 351s? Same reason GM needed four different 350s... 🤷
@@_Frank_the_Tank2 technically. The 351M and 400 is a variant of the 351C.
🗿💨 that crowler cam had some serious duration on them lobes 🌘🌒 Nearly soiled my bean bag chair seeing that. Thanks for sharing Mortske 👍
Just saw what ya pulled out of intake, time to replace my shorts,😂
Exh + - 32 intake bout 26.. bout 1.40 into video 😅 Truck stops are awesome, lol
Weld the rear and make it a pozzy then smokem till they pop. You can’t hurt the quarters any worse than they already are. Love it
valid point
Nice Torino To bad it’s crashed Mortske Great building move Glad someone got The Chevy
Hey Mortske that ford needs a 3/4 spacer under the carb and it haves a vacuum port on the back, it provides a heat up in the winter
