  • On this episode I showcase the Junkyard GT40 cylinder heads and upper/lower intake I recently acquired. In this video I discuss the big differences between stock Fox body mustang 5.0 H.O heads and intakes vs. the GT40 Explorer/Mountaineer upgraded heads and intakes. These parts are the start 90's nostalgia tops end engine build I will be performing on my 1991 Foxbody GT Convertible.

For anyone looking to upgrade to these, Junkyard Doggs sells these too. Some rebuilt, some right off the vehicles. He has a TH-cam channel also. That's where I got my intake and heads, all cleaned, rebuilt and painted for a reasonable price.

This video brings back memories. I think of the time I met a guy in a parking lot in the middle of the night to buy a pair of F3ZE (SVT Cobra) heads. It was like making a drug deal. A few weeks later I found the matching '93 Cobra manifold lying in the mud at a swap meet. I paid $500 (US) for the heads complete with factory roller rockers and $200 for the intake with gaskets and hardware. Man, those were the days. I still have the intake, but now it's bolted to a set of AFR 165s.

i had one of those meets once--right down the street from a well-lit mall extravaganza, the seller wanted to meet me in a sketchy, barely lit commuter parking lot i drove by twice since it was hidden by a gas station and some woods...but i got a good deal on the parts, so oh well.
another seller led me through a garage that was a recent extension to his house, down a staircase into his basement and after the deal was made, handed me a pamphlet about Jesus and asked me if I knew where I was going after the Rapture. "um, i'm pretty sure where i'm going 3 minutes from now..."
all i need i guess is a seller who tries to sell me Amway. but the coolest buy was at a garage made from cinderblocks, two stories high. Waiting for the owner to come back to make the sale, I spot 6 foot tall concert speakers on the roof of his office, and his coworker asks if I've heard the latest Metallica album made with a symphony orchestra. there was some interesting accoustics there....

I bought 2 '97 Explorers that were wrecked (not severe) for $300, and $350. 1 GT40, 1 GT40P. The GT40 had 238,000 miles and was shocked when torn down I saw no bore wear, and the heads were perfect. The P was left together with 118K. Springs and valves from Alex's, pocket port and on to my 91 convert. 4:10 gears Performance Automatic valve body in AOD. Very fun now! Oh the rear dif's have trak lock's and 3:70 gears with disc brakes. Will be doing the 2 short side axle, narrowing and using these too!

Hi Gary. I was listening to one of your somewhat older podcasts and you spoke of the Ford 427 SOHC engine, popularly known as the "sock" engine. NASCAR did ban that engine, but NHRA did not and it was very successful in drag racing. Chris at TIP said he has a pic of the engine with gear drive cams. I've never heard of that version, but the engine Ford released to the public was chain drive. Initially, the engine was released with sodium filled exhaust valves which, over time, would corrode the valves from the inside out, thereby causing the heads of the valves to snap off. Yeah, you can imagine the carnage that produced. Stainless steel valves solved the problem. In the late '60s, Ford sold quite a few Cammer engines and they're not terribly uncommon. I've seen a few in different cars at shows and other get togethers, and let me tell you, when you see one, it stops you in your tracks. For us old school car guys, it's probably the coolest engine Ford ever made. Anyway, as always, thanks. Bill

I have been working a little bit on my 1991 mustang and was wondering if you think it would be worth putting 10k into some rust work and a paint job. It's a 1991 5.0L LX coop. My grand father was the first owner and then he gave it to me. It is almost 100 stock, the only thing we did was replace the exaught piping due to rust as it is a Canadian car. Grandpa bought it here in Canada new. It also needs interior work probably replace it all. The engine has 200,000 km/ 123,000 miles on it put grandpa treated it very well it still runs and sounds great. Do you think I should do the paint and interior work on it. And again it has nothing done to it all serial numbers match I'm second owner. Looking forward to hear from you and if I did all that work do you have a rough estimate what it would be worth? I'm not looking to sell it, like you it was my first car and I love her so much. Thanks

Cool. But what years of 5.0 can I put the gt40 heads onto? I read in a forum today you can put them on a 77 302 block? My cousin owns a shop and agreed that the 97 heads would fit on a 1977 block. I want to swap in a 302 into my 89 ranger so I wanted to make sure I find the right block. I hear there are a few years in the 90s f150s that had roller rockers. Efi is preferred so wondering if I should start with that.

I imagine Ford put the GT40 stuff on the Explorer because it weighs over 1000 lbs more than a Mustang and knew it needed a little more power. Pluse, without the extra HP, it probably didn't make enough more power than the V-6 for anyone to justify paying for the V-8 option.

My Fox came with the whole GT40 head/intake deal with a CAI and headers, I measured the cam and it appears to be an E303, it also came with a set of the 1.7:1 crane cobra rockers. I'm running 19lb bosch injectors with a Walboro 155 and a stock A9L. Is there anything in that setup you think I'm leaving power on the table with? Seat of the pants I'm gonna guess it's making 270-280 at the tires which is a ton of fun but I'd love to break the 300 barrier without having to build a short block. Can you tune a stock A9L for bigger injectors? I'm new to the Fox community so I'm trying to learn as much about my car as I can.

    • @KASLCustoms
      @KASLCustoms  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes you most definitely can tune an A9L to do pretty much what ever you want it to other then run and very high rpm’s (i.e. 7200+). I have a video on my channel talking about this.
Unless that GT40 set up is ported fairly extensively, I’m not sure that you would be that high in the HP department should you test it on the rollers. I also think you’re probably at the higher side of the duty cycle for the 19# injectors. That said, I would look at bigger injectors (24#) and a good tune and I bet you can find some “free HP” for sure 👍

@@KASLCustoms I wasn't planning on running 19's forever, just wanted to get the car on the road and out of my Dad's basement 😂. It sat for a long time before I got it but it didn't even have an A9L when I got it (somebody tried to do a MAF conversion with an '87 ECM), so I thought they'd be safe and good enough to get the car on the road for a summer. No clue what was in it, but they were pretty ugly so I wasn't gonna risk it. Do you have any recommendations for chips that would be the most cost effective so I can get dyno tuned? Thanks.

Oh wow you don’t hear of that conversion wry often lol!
In all honesty, I would seek assistance from a reputable that is local - or close to you so they can see the car and help you with the tuning. You can buy an off the shelf tune but they are so generic and are made to pertain to the widest variety of people and mods. It’s kind of like shopping online for “a shirt.” It’s always better to know your size, colour preference, material, sleeve length, etc.

Actually people who wanted to go fast back in the 80's and 90's didn't go with the GT40 Heads. The only people who used GT40 heads we're old dudes(to brag at car shows) who had too much money and didn't know any better. They were overpriced at the time($800.00/pair), and compared to the very popular World products, Edelbrock, and Trick Flow(heads found under the hoods of street racing and, track cars) offerings in the same price range GT40 Heads didn't make sense. Some people bought the GT40X aluminum heads. Those were a different story. Although the GT40 intake was always very popular! However the reason why GT40 parts are popular today is they can be had CHEAP! I think the explorer got the upgraded head from piled up old stock. Ford was good for that. All the GT40 head that didn't sell and they had no more E7 supplies.

That's not accurate!! Who told you that??
Every single part for the Cobras and Explorers all have different part #s casted into them for their designated years and applications. The Cobra GT40 setup got 1.7 roller rockers and kept the High Output cam for more performance, while the Explorer GT40 setup had 1.6 rockers and a low end cam better suited for towing the extra weight of an SUV. All the heads had casting IDs as well.
Just because the inside of the GT40 ports are all the same n flow the same amount of air at the same velocity, doesn't mean they are the same, even the F150 Lightings with a 351 got a GT40 setup that was the same, but different...
Right off the bat, at 1st glance, all the intakes even look different, how could you even come to your conclusion??
It's not like Ford just happened to have MILLIONS of extra Cobra heads n intakes just laying around and some guy tripped over them and landed head 1st into an Explorer hood and had a light bulb go off!
