The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has many hours of Oscar Peterson recordings, beginning from when he was a teenager. When he passed on, they played many of those recording, and I remember one in particular. I'm sorry I don't remember the song, and I don't remember where, or when it was recorded, but I remember this. He was playing along in his usual excellent style, and about 2/3rds of the way through the song, he took off like a 747 roaring into the sky. He went to another level altogether. The freedom and joy of his playing just took your breath away. I can't even imagine what it must have been like for those in the audience. A glimpse of heaven. He was truly one of the best.
Saw Oscar in 1997 with my whole family at his return after a 1994 stroke at Carnegie Hall. A courageous return since his left hand was effected. Unbeliveable performance.
Love how Oscar slyly throws "Corner Pocket" into the solo. Always thought Oscar's solos sounded stylistically more like a horn player than a pianist. So inventive!

@@MikeNewland I saw Oscar 3 times in Australia in the 70's when we had a radio program. On the 1st occasion, Oscar was in no mood for an interview. By the time the last visit cam around he was a balloon. Poor Oscars left hand was gone after that Stroke.
@@bozotheclown935 i meant Martin Drew was a balloon about ten years ago in Ealing - badly worded. Oscar the same of course. Just awful. Killed themselves with their mouths, Such a waste
@@MikeNewland The Good Life... I like in Oscars Biography "Jazz Odyessey", he talked about those years spending every cent he had on jewellery, suits, clothes and great restaurants. I guess he enjoyed his success. He was grateful od Norman Grantz telling him one day he was not lending Oscar another cent, which prompted Oscar to get his finances a bit more steady and I suspect reel in his lifestyle as well. Probably by that time the damage was on its way. I do not let a day pass without listening to him. Martin had his ears wide open when he was playing never ever dropping a beat. Nothing these days like thos ol greats.

Saw him at Ealing Jazz Festival horrified by how fat he was and blurted it out. He heard me. Died shortly afterwards. So unnecessary.
