    Masterpiece by off the planet staggering talent from all three. I love to imagine OP jamming with Bach, up there past the clouds where music is born.

    I dont think ive seen as calm a performance as this from Oscar. My favourite parts of his playing are always when he doesn't rip out his lightening speed licks but instead just plays around the melody. He was a unique soul and it shines through his playing the most when he takes his sweet time.

    • @nemo227
      @nemo227 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Sometimes it's more difficult to play slowly. Your brain operates very quickly by suggesting the next note or phrase from what it "hears" before; one note suggests another, one phrase suggests another, one rhythm change/anomaly calls for the next. That's been my experience. I just try to let my conscious mind get in the background and let the music speak.

    Among modern inventors of melody, Oscar Peterson has no rival. That is because he entered the scene at a time when melodic invention was the principal improvisatory paradigm. When Art Tatum, who was the superior musician overall, matured as an artist, the melodic paradigm in jazz had not yet taken shape. Both piano masters are beyond compare.

      @@younique90 Nina - at the time still only known by her birth name of Eunice Kathleen Waymon, as she didn't take her stage name until a few years afterwards - attended Juilliard (studying classical piano) in 1950.
      She applied to Curtis the following year and was not accepted. There's no way to know what role, if any, race might have played in this. It needs to be noted that Curtis had accepted black applicants prior to this time. Also, Curtis is exceptionally difficult to get in to, and traditionally many of it's attendees are child prodigies. FWIW, at 18 (Nina's age at the time of her audition), she would have been past the window when she would have been considered a "prodigy".
