@@ST-lb9tt I think last year when he was pitching he had fewer strike calls on the outside of the plate than average. So he was getting screwed by umps when hitting and when pitching

Seems that superstar athlete has to pay some sort of dues one way or another, even more if one is Asian...Umps decided to enlarge Ohtani's strike zone by 2 ball widths which makes all the difference. But Shohei is smart, he's catching on. Last season he was protesting in the kindest ways, this season he found a way to get good with the larger Ohtani strike zone. Now here comes the unfair part (not like the above isn't unfair enough already), pitcher Ohtani gets the same strikezone as everyone else, wonder how much benefit of the doubt he gets on the close calls on the borders of the strikezone.
That's what they did 2nd half of last season. They nerfed him with larger strike zone causing his OPS to drop from 1.000+ to 0.965 which is still elite of course but very unfortunate. He had 33 HR halfway of the season and only hit another 13 the rest of the way. He was projected to hit 60+ and realistically 50 at least. But Shohei still did ok, he wowed them other ways...hitting triples, stealing home...
When will MLB join the modern age and use modern technology to bring precision to umping home plate? The same technology we just saw on this video that's used for the broadcasts would bring some honesty and integrity back to the sport. Oh, wait a minute, I almost forgot, there has Never been honesty and integrity in the sport!
Foolish Baseball video titled The Year of Ohtani also talked about this 😅 to be this unlucky but still managed to put up a number like he did, just incredible.
A lot of those pitches are close. With two strikes, you have to protect the plate. But, I do admire him for not doing a Donaldson or Votto imitation. 😂
Announcers are not on his side at all. None of them opposed the bad calls. But what difference does it make. This is why baseball is impossible to appreciate on radio.
2:15 that's a strike; the ball hit the upper half of the zone. 2:31 Don't move out of the zone on a close call, umps will more than likely call the pitch against you. The thing is this, every player gets bad calls, pitchers, batters, baserunners, fielders. Sad that it happens, especially during critical moments.
One thing I noticed, is that he ALWAYS starts toward first base on a close 3-2 pitch assuming it's a ball. We know umpires don't like that. Let the umpire make the call, THEN start towards first.
If the umpires were consistent on all pitches by the all pitchers in the same games, no problem. MLB needs to assess all umpires and disclose the results. Also MLB needs to set the rules to the quality standard for the umpires. The umpires are unsung heroes but they don’t get immunity from being penalized by their own serious mistakes or misconducts.
In the end, everything balances them out. There were times when Ohtani pitched outside the strike zone and batters were struck out. Having said that, I like the idea of using Robo Umpire.
if you watch Foolish Baseball youtube video titled "The Year of Ohtani", you know that's not true though 😅 when Ohtani pitched he got less strike call on borderline ball, and when he batted he got more strike call than average MLB players.
