This guy is what all athletes should aspire to be. He is not only at the top of his game in his sport, but he is also kind and humble. It proves that the two qualities are not mutually exclusive.
We were all taught to be this way in Asia as children. Unfortunately most of the time this personality works at our disadvantage, especially when moving to a western country.
@@willxiahan364I’m just so shocked at how respectful Asians out it’s just a very different experience. But unfortunately I’m the west we don’t care about respect and it makes us worse

According to Japanese news, Ohtani's family has never touched his money. Even when Ohtani offered to rebuild his family home, his parents said, "We're still healthy, and the house isn't that old, so that's not how you should spend your money. Save it properly." His mother still works part-time, and their lifestyle hasn't changed at all from old days. When his mentor and sister got married, Ohtani tried to give them a big gift, but they didn't accept it. Ohtani himself doesn't spend money on anything other than baseball; it's clear that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
some people probably think Ohtani picking up litter in the dugout and on the field is a bit obsessive, but elementary schools in Japan have no janitors - the children do ALL the cleaning in the school including the washrooms. Japanese kids are taught very young to take responsibility and not expect others to clean up for them or after them. Look at the streets in Japanese towns and cities - they are as clean as an indoor mall, not even a speck of trash or litter anywhere.
Shohei picks up trashes as he believes each trash is a luck other people threw away. We’d better start doing that so the world will be a better place.💕❤️
That's a nice way to put it but it's more like karma. He believes the more good you do, the more good will come back to you. And it sometimes just take that last bit of luck to win.
...and for all children and young people too. On top of being an extraordinary, talented baseball player, Shoei is also such a remarkable young man with a wonderful personality and a heart of gold. He has definitely won our admiration and adoration. 👏👍💕

The universe is on his side. He set a very difficult goal that many thought was impossible and did everything he can to put himself in position to succeed.
He picks up trash not necessary for the ground crew. It just makes him feel good to keep his surrounding clean. How can I say that? Because I'm Japanese too.
Yea japan you rarely see trash on the floor. They even carrry little ash trays so they dont ash on the floor. Not saying some dont but their streets are pretty clean
Not trash. The shrapnel from the bat. As for cleaning up, Japan is the cleanest country I’ve ever been to. You can’t even find a garbage can, yet it’s spotless. People just carry their trash with them til they get home. And then they have those onsen and public bathhouses with mineral hot springs. I’d soak in one every day if I could.
MVP is not enough, give this guy the sportsperson of the year award. I still think Freddie Freeman is more "friendly," but Shohei Ohtani is just amazing and i love the guy

That chair thing was so refreshing to see. Elementary school kids are taught to push their chairs back under the desk (or however they found it) after using it. By the middle of first grade it's almost automatic for them and they carry this up to adulthood. So nice to see Shohei instinctively put the swivel chair back in place after his interview. 😀
This guy is definitely from another world! Hope he can keep his enthusiasm and exuberance as his career unfolds. It's not going to all be rosy and filled with success
Most Japanese baseball players are just as polite and kind as Ohtani. Actually, most Japanese people are like this. I say this not to diminish or dismiss his kindness and friendliness. He is extremely personable and humble. He is a joy to watch play and I wish him only the best success.
I heard from a Japanese friend that.... when Shohei was in Japanese Little League, his teammates and their parents had only seen eating and sleeping, other than his baseball practice. Even during the summer practice camp, even if the kids were making loud noise until midnight, he never woke up until morning once he slept.

I don’t care what team you root for - if you don’t like Sho, you must not like baseball or purely good people. I would hope that this is every kid’s role model.
I’m Japanese and these comments are making me cry. I’ve never heard Japanese people praises for Japanese. When we talk about us we always compare ourselves with people from another culture and say like “Japanese are too serious” “we should be more like people outside of Japan” “that is too Japanese (it’s usually used as a bad meaning, like too honest or too thoughtful)” etc. but seeing people outside of Japan saying something so nice about Japanese culture is really touching and makes me realized that we can proud of our culture little bit more.
I work in tech and every single Japanese person I have dealt with has been nothing but amazing. The attitude and compassion for others is great. I literally told my wife last week that we should plan a trip to Japan to see more about the culture and people.
Please be proud of your culture! There are many worldwide who envy Japan’s cleanliness, safety, lack of crime, safe and reliable public transit including your train system, proper respectfulness to one another, strong work ethic and perseverance. How everybody is proud of their job and do their job to the best of their ability. I have hardly ever met an arrogant Japanese person as I think your culture does not encourage that type of attribute. Japanese people abroad are very much respected by others. I would love to visit Japan one day! Although you have such a large population in such a small land area, you still have beautiful nature areas. It seems to me that the environment is treated with respect in Japan. One of the most obvious compliments I can pay is how high tech Japan is. And I haven’t even started to talk about the food yet! You must have very high standards for each other in your culture and maybe that is where the criticism comes from. It’s possible to offer constructive criticism while at the same time acknowledging the positive characteristics of the person or the situation. Best wishes! 😃🙏🌸⚾️

Shohei said that picking up trash means picking up luck.
The small gesture of picking up 'litters' tells a lot about how he was raised.
