I donate everything what I declutter, because the resources that are most limited in my life are mental energy and time.
That’s def something to think about. I once decluttered a pot shelf in my bedroom (too high, dusting was limited, and the items were heavy) and took them right up to Goodwill. Someone got a bargain that day as the items were all from Pier 1.
You're fortunate.
I wanted to sell my decluttered items but my energy is so limited. Instead I carefully chose charities I want to support, and donate to them. And then that is how I do my good deed of supporting people in need.
If I think about how I could have sold the items, I remind myself how I appreciate being able to give to charity.
I need this mindset. I need money tho.
I donate everything mainly because I know it all comes back around and almost always, when I give things away - anything I may want or need is given to me or I find cheap or on sale.
I have always appreciated coming up on a great deal or good free stuff.
If I didn't care about spreading good will, I would do it because it is the easiest route / path of least resistance 💜💙💚
I’m the same as you, Carla… When I moved last fall, I had to get rid of about half my stuff. I found online selling excruciating. People made insulting offers and ultimately I sold only a handful of pieces of furniture, and everything else was donated. I consider it my charitable donations for the next three years. It was a lot of good stuff. I had a month overlap between my old home and my new home, and in the last week of my possession of my old home, I opened up to my doors to all my neighbours to come and take whatever they wanted for free. It was fun and fantastic! And everything went.
Ok that’s soooo brilliant!! so incredibly satisfying when you get to see the person who gets your item. I love that you opened your doors like that!!
I knew someone who rented a storage unit, put all the boxes in it, put an ad on line and sold the whole lot for a flat rate. Always ask for a little more so you have some wiggle room to negotiate. That way, no one comes to your house. Always bring a friend with you.
That is a good idea! Be nice and don’t put garbage, it’s fun for the buyer (like a surprise bag), and hopefully everyone is happy!❤
By the time I am ready to declutter something I figure I have either gotten my money's worth or at least gotten over the guilt of having bought something so ridiculous that I just want to be rid - I donate!

I used to love selling old clothes and collectors hobby items on Ebay auctions and enjoyed the whole process, made a decent amount back so all the photographing and writing listings (and answering daft questions from people who can't be bothered to read the listing) was all worth it. But in the last 5 or 6 years I have noticed that people no longer bid until the final few seconds of the auction and so you only ever get the start price.... to be honest I have really resented having to part with some really nice higher end High Street clothes that I loved but grew out of (too much cake therapy!) for a few £. It's either that or list things with a higher 'Buy It Now' price and be prepared for it to sit there for absolutely MONTHS. Meanwhile it's still cluttering up your home and the whole point of it was to get organised... so in future everything will be going to the charity shop. I notice Poshmark both opened AND closed it's business in the UK in 2023!
I used to love selling on eBay as well. I made a decent amount over the years, but with eBay policy changes and the increasing cost of shipping I don’t really sell anymore. Now with so many businesses selling on eBay and offering free shipping, a small time seller cannot compete anymore. I understand what you are saying about auctions. I stopped doing auction type listings a long time ago and just did buy it now. Now I sell non-clothes items on Mercari and FB Marketplace where they move pretty fast. I still have some clothes I want to sell on eBay, but I just don’t have the motivation.
I think you nailed it when you gave resale items a $50 threshold. My experience is that the effort it takes to photo, list, chat, and meetup is at least worth that much.
After years of feeling " judged" by consignment selling I now think donating to my local thrift the best. They give 20% off coupons for all donations. I get that you need to shop the store to use the coupon and I do. Giving is good , right.

I once went to sell some really great things at buffalo in nyc I felt so judged & the offer was not worth it neither the store credit so I took my stuff & left feeling exhausted & disappointed I don’t ever want to go through that again donating & getting some tax credit works better for me & allows me to feel free of clutter thanks for your videos they are inspiring 👍🏽
I'm disabled, so I prefer donating because selling takes more energy than I have. Even though I love that selling comes with the knowledge that my items are going to a new loving home!
I'm in an area where garage/yard sales are very common. I enjoy the process preparing for and having a sale. I try to price things with resellers in mind--about half or a third of what I think it would sell for online. That way I get some cash for it but I only have to deal with people for one day.
I thought about doing a yard sale. I did one with a friend years ago and made about 400 bucks. It was awesome!
Buffalo Exchange is the worst! The line to sell is always about an hour long, I’ve been condescendingly told “this is too last season” or else for a $200 item they will give you a hefty $6.00… lol. I honestly have seen the ugliest items being bought there. IMO better to just give stuff away for free to avoid the embarrassment and not waste your time. EBay and Mecari is hit and miss…if you have the patience to upload the items and let it sit around in your home and hope someone is interested then it’s not too terrible. However if you seriously want to declutter stuff- just take it to a charity shop and walk away. The money spent was long gone. Freedom from the stuff that I don’t want is way more valuable to me.
Crossroads is also awful! B exchange was actually super fast this day and the girl was so nice I think we stepped into a wormhole

Yes Buffalo exchange is brutal. I wear a size large and always buy really nice quality items. They take almost nothing from me unless it's Timbuk2 bags or a patagonia jacket or something. They took some nice artist made sterling jewelry from me for almost nothing. (Then after I cashed out I could hear the sales girls fighting over the big sterling gemstone pendants that they just paid me like 10 dollars each for. They were nice although made in the middle East.) My thing is... you wonder who the pricing is even for. Are the people that work there lowballing so they can buy it and resell it later? My friends and I have all had the same experiences there. I do have one male friend who makes a lot of money there on the trendy tee shirts he sells. But all the women I know say they get nothing and they rip on the clothes they bring in. It makes me shop there a lot less. Not a real positive experience there...
Sadly at LOT of resale shops are like this! I think it’s better to just sell your own stuff at a yard sale or online with Poshmark.
Selling things is definitely time consuming, but can be fun too. I’ve sold good quality expensive things on eBay for the minimum amount. And once some people had a bidding war on my basic strappy top for way more than I bought it 😅 I tend to donate these days, especially if I’m doing a big declutter - I just want it gone!
I live in a small apartment and even though I would love to be that person, listing and selling, I give up. 😂 I donate it all. Some go to worthy rummage sales and others just to goodwill. Time and space is precious to me.😊
The "worthy rummage sale" is my new favorite for non-clothing items of value. One box/corner area to keep the items until the next event that helps makes money to support Democrats to win elections. Every little bit counts. Our County Democratic party headquarters made money on a rummage sale that helped us pay our rent for the headquarters. Keep helping and volunteering. Election winners make the laws, except the punishments, and shape the judiciary. We must win elections for civil rights, voting rights, bodily autonomy, environmental protections, social security, Medicare, and the rule of law. Maybe I should start a video called decluttering to stop fascism! Clean your closet to defeat the authoritarian takeover. 😊
Hi!! I started selling some items on Depop, as a way to see how much my unworn garments were worth, little by little uploading and selling became more of a way to stop me purchasing things I don’t wear at all or enough of, (from fashionable colours, just in case, special occasion items..) I lost some weight and I uploaded many things I thought were super cute but don’t fit me, then I noticed how much I was willing to get rid off stuff as my life style changed, and I also noticed how much I love other things that I wanted to have them fitted to my size.
The process of selling have help me understanding my personal style, preventing me from over consumption and now when I purchase something I always wonder If i will be willing to sell it, If its worth my time, (of taking pictures, add descriptions, package and post…) More often than not, I decide to not buy something, and I end up not even remembering the item it. This process makes me feel better, as Im not bringing potential clutter into my life.

I really like decluttering process. I like selling hhings online even with minimum price. Thos is not onlyoney but ecology as well. When a person buys something, he/she tends to take care of the things. But when it is for free ...
I always donate the stuff. The idea of selling just adds extra stress that I don’t need. It feels good knowing the thrift store will use the money from selling my stuff to help others. 😊💙🐦
I prefer to donate. In attempting to go through my parents household, its either donate or eventually call in someone who will handle an estate and let them deal with it. Too time consuming to handle myself.
That’s what I did with my parents house too. Did not have the bandwidth to sell items it was overwhelming enough as is!

She’s the only other person I’ve seen with the purple/tan one like I have ❤ Very cool that she designed a fabric that was picked up by TNF 😊 On the topic of sell vs donate, I’ve been selling online my entire adult life, but I’m like you… sometimes I get overwhelmed if I have too many things that need to be listed. Right now, I’ve got a massive backlog of things to list and it’s been haunting me. When it gets this way, I will set a dollar amount for what something will sell for, and donate anything that goes for less than that.

I had posted Chanel brown suede mules for $75.00. I wore them once. 2 separate people bought them and returned them. I said forget it and I still have them and I will wear them in the summer. After that experience I don't want to do it anymore.

My favorite consignment shop has served me well for most of my life. I don't take it personally when they won't take certain items. Just donate. We have a place to donate in our town and all of the funds raised go to our public schools. I get it out of my house and the schools benefit. They do VERY well.

I sell nothing, I donate, give to family, neighbours and friends. The lady at Restore said to me they have made over a one thousand dollars from our donations in the last three years. I was speechless for a second but no regrets. TBH I would of donated most to the SPCA to support in need animals but they are not taking donations due to the pandemic and small space. Oh I have just been told they take donations on a monthly bases depending on how quickly they empty the shop. Great to know. I so cant be bothered with all it takes to sell my clutter. We are soooooo much more intentional about what we bring into the home now!
Great video! I have sold a lot of clothes, purses and shoes on Poshmark and Mercari over the years. It is time consuming photographing, listing and then taking the stuff to the post office. Recently unless it is a higher priced item I have been donating to a thrift store who puts the profits towards spaying and neutering dogs and cats for people who can’t afford the services in the community. I figure that way someone gets to use the item and I am contributing to a good cause.

I am so glad that you talked through the ‘selling items for cash’ debate. I often feel guilt giving items away. I am just not successful in reselling. And once I made my decision I want the stuff GONE! I take picture of my higher end donations and claim it on my taxes.

I resell online as my job, it is a job for sure. LOVE your vids, you are one of the main inspos for my decluttering days!
I have had good luck selling things that are valuable or unique. And if desperate for cash any amount is welcome. In general selling clothes is more difficult unless it is very valuable, imo. I prefer the auction sites, because I find that more interesting than straight sales. And sometimes items will be worth more than expected.
I love resellers! I sell books, DVDs and CDs in big amounts with very little effort on a regular basis (I read a lot and the library does not have everything I want). But like for clothing etc. I have the rule: more than 15 € (16 $) I try to sell it. But things that would go away on a yardsale or fleamarkets for less I just donate. I do not have enough stuff to make a yardsale myself anymore and the kids clothes go to little cousins. But I think its worth it at the beginning of a decluttering journey, because you have a lot of stuff to sell and the gain motivates.
The downside of selling on reselling sites is that you still need somewhere to store it all. If things don't sell after a certain time I either donate, give to friends and family or I take to a boot fair (in in the UK so a bit like a flea market in a field).
The main goal has to be about decluttering and not about making money. Try selling first and if you do get money that is a bonus but ultimately the item is set to go. I give about two weeks of selling time and after that bye,bye.

Interesting! my threshold for selling is around 8 euros.I can use a dropping service that has a shop just below my house so that helps (before i had to got a place 15 min away and my threshold was higher) but i made a ton of money resaling while declutering. We also have a donation app here that i love to use for bags of clothes that would not be worth to sale or that have not sales after a month or 2.
I have listed items for porch pickup with FB. Large items…like a treadmill, also a Christmas tree! Easy peasy. Clothing, etc. I take to Goodwill. I wouldn’t do the work required to list and sell items…no matter how many times I thought I would try. Ughhh.
Yeah i would just take the 35 cos the store credit just encourages you to reclutter
I hear you about not liking selling items - it is a hassle and some people are ODD! I have made quite a bit if money on FB Marketplace over the past few years, so that is nice, but it is a lot of work and headache, and I still have too much clutter in my house.....
I moved from a 2 bedroom apartment to a small travel trailer. I had to sell about 70% of what I owned. I used Facebook marketplace. I found it easy as I kept prices low. I sold thing for about 30% of what I paid for them max with the exception of electronics that I sold for about 50%. I got what I asked for the items and often had multiple people wanting items with only 1-2 exceptions. What didn't sell went to Goodwill. I will say you need to give it some time. I started selling items about 4 months before I moved to take make is less stressful and allow me to post items multiple times as needed.
I skip selling -> I just put it for free on fb, at the curb or donate. Last year I had a ton so the donation center came and picked it up.

This was so timely and informative. I always donate my items because I have no patience for selling but my mother wants to sell things so now I have some ideas to get me started to see if it will be worth our time to do that.
Higher ticket can definitely be worth it!
If you sell on Poshmark for example, make sure you share your closet as often as possibly as that can help. And they have different parties too that you’d share all your shoes for example. Good luck as it can be time consuming.
I've sold on Craigslist and had immediate responses and good luck selling things I posted with no haggling. I feel like at yard sales people only want to pay .50 cents for things and it's a lot of effort for a mediocre return.
I never sell my clutter. I much prefer to donate and have it make someone’s day. I always offer my things to my sister 1st, then on our what’s app group that we have with everyone in our street( for free) and if no one wants our things, we donate. Sometimes though, when my head is about to explode, I just put the bags of donations in my car and drive it straight to our donation centre, without offering it to anyone.

This was great to watch. I sell on Poshmark and it takes forever for clothing to sell so the clothing stays in my home forever. Not great for someone who wants to declutter. I might need a new strategy! 🤔
Do you share your closet a lot as that can help. But yes, it’s a time consuming venture.
@@ds7675 I go in spirts of sharing, then days off as it’s so time consuming. As a part time seller it’s hard to manage every single day. Also, the low ball offers are so off putting.

Oh wow....I haven't been down Melrose in years. I remember a store called Warbabies, where I got my monkey boots years ago (i was 12, now 45)...LOL! Yes, I agree with you, I don't like to sell anything. Especially clothes, I just leave it downstairs for people to grab by the recycling bins. Love the video. I tried Posh Mark. It was a fail. In L.A. I sold a lot of clothes to Buffalo Exchange and Crossroads. Each company/store has its own criteria...so you have to go to multiple locations to move that merchandise! They are picky on condition, brands, natural fibers and size :( I felt so good about selling for myself than just giving away for someone else to sell. I will say, It is work and I am trying to downsize so storing all the bags and bins to one day sell is taking up real estate in my space and mind! Thanks for sharing.

I seriously considered it! There are bars on the windows (not uncommon in older four plex style apartments in LA) but those are on my dealbreakers list. Otherwise super cute spot!
Genuinely curious, can you take the bars off? Even as a renter surely as long as you keep them and put it back on when you leave it’s okay, right? I’ve never lived in a home with them so idk how feasible it would be to do

I tried consignment once and I swear they changed the rules while they had my clothes. I basically would have had to pay to get my stuff back that didn’t sell so I just let them keep it. What a joke.
I only list and sell what's still in their original boxes that I've never used. And even with those items; I only give it a certain time window to sell. Other than that; I wash and donate, such as clothes. Great video. I can truly relate to not being able to go into the cat cafe due to allergies. She did say it was a cat cafe no?

I've accepted that if you want to sell your items fairly quickly, keep expectations very low. Even in MINT condition, don't expect clothing return to be better than 25% what you paid; furniture and appliances only around 30%. Is it worth the effort, yes I think so. It's too easy to just donate and I believe if it takes effort to remove items from your life, you will be more selective on the items you then purchase or let in.

Honestly if you have high Contemporary or designer goods you have a better chance of selling them on. Or for example Zara with tags also sells but everything else is likely donation.
When I declutter I just want the stuff gone so donate knowing it’s going to help others. If something is worth a lot I might sell it
I cannot believe the amount of stuff people move with! Or at least PLAN to move with. The friends that you have helped get ready to move, have they really moved all they planned to? I especially wonder about the friend who was moving to Europe.

The consignment stores are such a hassle.. You have to get an appt... can only take in about 10 items at a time.. they are super picky on stuff even thought they have a lot of stuff in the store not nearly as nice, you can only get your money at certain times, and when you ask for your things back that didn't sell, they mysteriously don't have them. I don't even bother anymore. It is a painful process so unless it's a pretty valuable larger item we just donate it.. It does make me feel a little sick feeling like I'm throwing money down the drain. :) Your friends apartment is so cute. Good luck to her on her new job !
I post things on my local buy nothing group and things get picked up within 48 hrs. Feels much better with the item out of way 😆

Question: You mentioned in the beginning of the video, she was giving up her apartment to move. The entry looked more like a house and the interior is spacious. IF....it's an apartment, is it possible you could rent it, since you've mentioned moving. Just a thought & curious.
I send things to ThredUp because to me it takes the same effort as donating (just putting a shipping label on a box I would have filled to donate anyway), they decide what to sell and dispose of the rest, and then I get shopping credits.
It seemed like she didn't wanna get rid of anything really. So this was more about her organizing her belongings for Pashmark and for moving and selling at consignment.
Oh well.
Our version of Buffalo Exchange is Plato's Closet for teens/20s and Clothes Mentor for working women. Agree they are super picky but theyve got a certain clientele. I use to package like stuff and sell as a bundle.
When I lived in the Midwest, garage sales were always successful and fun! Out here in SoCal, not so much so I donate.
I just donate my items because I figure the stuff nice enough to sell could really benefit someone trying to start over at the women’s shelter

FB market place a henry vacuum I inherited from my mama - the number of pi$$ takers will never do that again! Books and media selling online (we buy books for example) generally get peanuts for each book/dvd/game etc but ship a bulk order off and out of the house I don’t mind doing that - I would have taken the cash is she gonna use that store credit before she goes? 🤷🏼♀️

I tried a few sites online and locally. EBay was the best. I just limit attempted sales to two bins of storage, and donate everything else. All other selling sites, I agree…don’t make much money. Not worth the time.
I like selling online but I’m pretty clear if they are wasting time or ghosting I will report them… And I usually have 2 yard sales a year… I’m also a minimalist and a professional organizer, I have very small amount of space in my apartment for storage and I do like donating

I made over $2k selling on Mercari in 2021. I didn 't feel like selling much last year. People who leave reviews just arent' always nice. And it gets annoying sometimes. It does take a lot of time to list things and deal with packing them up and getting them to the post office/fedex/ups It just depends on how much you want to deal with it. I know you have used threadup before and I have a few boxes i need to send them thinking maybe i could make something. I just don't want to deal with the people most of the time on these selling sites. I have found that usually people are nicer on posh. However, I often feel like my free time could be spend doing better things. Also, the products can be sitting around your house for MONTHS before they sell so you have to weigh the pros and cons.
Also, I LOVE Good Chop. i have been using them for over a year. Great quality meats, and also they have amazing customer service. I also highly recommend them.
I donate everything I declutter. I give things to friends and family as well as donate to good will/salvation army. My items are always in almost new condition so selling is probably a good idea. I just think why sell for the purpose of personal gain when I can give it to someone who needs and will appreciate the item.
Too much trouble for me to use up time and energy for resale. I would so much rather donate or give to someone that would use or enjoy it more than myself!
I don’t like selling things; I just give them away on my community page or to friends. I’ve also had junk removal companies come because they will find places to donate.
Agree with you, personally, it is not worth my time and effort. Besides, I live in Spain, where second hand is not a big thing, so it is even harder... so donate it is!
The most part I donate my items. Sometimes I keep a bag just for donations.
