044 was my first real chainsaw, I got it for free from a logger friend of mine with a box of spare parts. It was totally blown up from a bad big bore kit and replacing that top end was what sent me down the rabbit hole of saws
Great video,I have a mid 80's 038 magnum that probably should have a deep clean. You have motivated me to clean her up when i get up to my cabin at the end of winter.
I share your sentiments regarding the 044. I have a 10 mm version that is in mint condition. Was cutting with it a few weeks ago, and it is just so smooth. It gives you the sense that you'd never really need any other saw than that! Thanks for sharing your great work as always!
Just seen this video. So i dug, then I ended up watching all of your 044 videos.. I have a original, fully stock, 1989 Stihl 044. 10mm wrist pin, slanted fin. My friend, I love this saw. I use it to chuck up my lengths of spruce for the winter. I paid $450 last year. I really wish you can see this saw. It runs like a top, got a 24in bar, full house chain both Stihl. I trim the rakers and she, loves the wood…! My friend, I shall part with the wife before this saw. Love yor videos buddy. Greeting from Newfoundland. Stay warm!
My Holzforma G444 was delivered to me by FedEx with a broken handle. Just this month decided to install the new handle. When everything was in that litttle cam on the far left cracked and broke. :( Now waiting on Holzforma to send me whole new cam spring kit. :) Just a coincidence that you posted this so much help. :) Thank you. :) The G444 is a twin copy of the 044 and yes I also pull 25 inch full comp on it....always cut nose first and she will pull. :) Exactly will kickback if not careful and just replaced the starter rope also.
you'll like this, i have been struggling with the first stihl i bought brand new a l"il 026 so i put a new impulse line on it carb rebuild kit ordered the crankseals, started it after the carb kit and a good blow out still wouldn't run any sense, then remembered i had put a new air cleaner on it, because the inbuilt choke butterfly wasn't sealing, so ran it with the covers off and blow me if the choke wasn't coming off it was sticking! So filed a bit in the aircleaner started it and its raging again, not bad for 21year old saw! lesson for me on not always trusting stihl parts!
I have a collection of 026’s coming on here. Starting to get to know them a little & love them. They are my favourite stihl saw so far. I’d like to get a nice 028av some day if I get the chance, but am pre occupied with the 026’s for now.
Great as always Tinman! Hanging out in the shed working on my newest acquisition (Homelite XL 12) And making some video while I watch yours. Haha! Thanks for always being helpful, positive and entertaining. Keep em coming!
Just got a 10mm 044 last week. Wow, what a saw. It has a couple mods and just absolutely rips. I had a 461 new and gotta say I don't think a 044 is much behind....probably just as fast in wood 20" or less.

I picked up a 034 super from a recycling yard. Needed carb cleaning and a ignition coil, fuel lines. Looked further the exhaust side of the piston is scored. It still has a ton of compression
That’s a fine saw! Glad to hear the farmertec tank is a good fit, gotta get one for my 038, need some parts for my 440 too! Thanks for sharing buddy! Always love FNS! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
I have a farmertec on my ported 044. I had to steal the red lever off my factory handle because you’d break your thumb trying to drive it down to engage the choke. And the tank vent leaks fuel anytime the saw is not upright. EBay vendor gave me a full refund and told me to keep the handle so I’m hardly upset.
Great video Tinman! That's an awesome saw you have there, that series of Stihl is by far my favorite I've never had any major complications with mine. Keep up the great work 👍👍💪💪😁😎!
Hi Tinman!!😀😀 Yes we definitely could get the arctic model down here in the states. Back in the day when I ran 44' s they were just a saw. If I knew then what I knew now I would have keep a dozen of them. I always really loved my O44 . They are really good saws. But then the O46 came out and I started running them. Then the 460 came out and now I'm still running them. I'm close enough to the end of my cutting career I'm sure they will last me as long as I need them to. Take care my friend!!😀😀 Logger Al

Also works as a wee reminder if you can't quite remember what something looked like before you dismantled it!! Of course, TH-cam often does the same job and you can find really helpful videos, some of them made by a chap that goes by the name of "Tinman". I'd also recommend videos by "Afleetcommand".
I only have 1 Stihl. an 08s. If I were to get another it would be an 044 or 038. My mate has a 461 which is a great saw, but I was surprised at the weight of it for its size. Oh to have al the saws we want. Just bought another P28 yesterday for 17 bucks. Hehe. Keep the videos coming man.
Grease needle bearing every time it’s apart and I rotate my sprocket. One time I pulled it apart and the needle cage was blue just starting to turn blue but having a look to grease saved it
My equivalent would be a nice 038 av magnum, with the alloy tank that I have. Same issue with the start mechanism, I "throw start" the saw to avoid problems. But man it´s a nice saw!!! Timing feels a little advanced on the magnums even in stock format, maybe that's why it´s a bit hard to pull on them. Thanks for all the good videos!!! By the way, would be nice to see you work on one of these, the early 038 mag
Hey Tubman. I have a 044. I was wondering about the “ winter mode “. I have a half moon shaped hole in the shroud that faces the cylinder. I’ve been reading that there’s supposed to be a little slide or something in there. Am I missing a part for this? Thanks!
044 is the most loved saw in my area. They bring top $$$$. Only local loggers I know that dont care for them are really really hard on stuff. They are 395xp fans but I think they can break anvils with a bag of marshmallows.
Cool video, was wondering when you were going to pull an orange and white one out for the Stihl fans. Been reading a ton of different theories on porting and find it very interesting that your 044 runs so well with just a base gasket delete. Thanks for sharing!!!
Tinman I have a Stihl 462 and the muffler is hollow as Ive cut the baffle out and opened up the stock outlet. It has twin 1/2 inch exhaust tubes in the front muffler cover facing forward and am getting sawdust fines inside of the muffler sticking to the oil. I am worried about dust/dirt getting into the combustion chamber wearing the rings faster. Do two strokes suck dirt that is in the muffler back in the combustion chamber? Wanted to get your take thoughts on it. Thanks and I enjoy your cutting videos.
Idk if the rope spools on some of those stihls are smaller giving a guy less torque advantage or if they just have that much compression cause I got a MS290 that pulls over harder than my XL925 Homelite with a mint condition cylinder and piston/rings
Have a look at the FarmerTec mufflers - they are dual port and not hard to open up a little more under the spark screen. Stihl dual port mufflers are no longer available :(

Always the models ending in 2,4,6,8 were the best.Even the quality of the plastic on everything was superior than today's models.
Tinman I know more about cars than saws. But when they work the exhaust. They place the gasket on the heads. They dykem the heads and open the exhaust to the gaskets. Have you ever tried doing that on a saw. I know Ironhorse works the muffler itself. I’ve never seen anyone work the exhaust opening. Just curious 🧐
