    Just want to thank you for your video on rebuilding a carb on a Mac 10 10. I'm reworking an old right hand start and your detail in explaining the positioning of the gaskets in the carb was so helpful. Other TH-camrs had it sooo wrong. They didn't even know the difference between the ethanol components vs non ethanol. Thank you

    Thanks for the demo. I worked on saws as a guy who just got them to run by carbs and adjustments. I had about 40% failures or so. Now that I have more knowledge my success rate is higher. i totally got what you are doing. I have porting in my future and now that I can measure all the pressure points (crank seals etc) with pressure testing I am having fun with 2 strokes at 65 years of age. Cool eh!!!

    Very good introductory video on 2 stroke porting. Porting 2 strokes it's not an exact science as there are many variables to be taken into account. I have built and raced 2 stroke engines for over 40 years and I very familiar with the top end 2 strokes that can make more than 400HP per 1000cc equivalent. I am new to chainsaws (I just recently moved off grid and have to do my own wood) but fascinated and keen to try to push the limits on a chainsaw. Like it is said in the video a 2 stroke engine is an air pump and if you figure how to put more air (fuel mixture actually) into it and burn it fast you develop more power. In a 2 stroke you can get more power as following: 1. up to 40% more from the exhaust (proper tuned expansion chamber exhaust), 2. 10-50% more compression ratio and correct squish band, 3. 20-30% transfer ports and correct volumetric ratio between crankcase and cylinder (above the piston), 4. 15-20% from carburettor tunning alone and the rest 10-20% is in the type of fuel and oil ratio you use, type of oil, spark plug heat value, ignition timing and last but not least the specific power band you want the engine to perform at max torque. Like it is said in the video just buy second hand parts and have fun, who knows you may get something!

    Very good information, I'm remembering back in mid 80 early 90 I helped a mechanic put sleeves in an old 4 series Detroit Diesel maybe 471 or something, he explained the intake, compression, combustion and exhaust and how it took place in 2 strokes of the piston. The sleeves had a series of square rectangular ports in the sleeve where the blower on the side of the block forced air to be picked up on the way to tdc. Wow it's crazy how you will forget things when you don't do them regularly. I remember as a 20 something year old gaining much respect for a good engine builder!!!
    Thank you for reminding me of those good days I always asked questions and wanted to learn this stuff, people don't realize the skills that guys like yourself have are not learned over a couple of months it is years of doing and experimenting!!

    Been a mechanic for over 40 yrs. By no means an engineer. 2 strokes have way less moving parts than a valved 4 stroke, but my peabrain has to actually work some to know the different operating principles, and specifics. Have worked on a 2 stroke diesel, they are cool.

    This video, as well as many of your others, have gone a VERY long way in helping me understand porting and the operation of saws in general. I'm new in the saw game but have taken a deep interest in them after I lost my job. So needless to say I have watched countless videos from a bunch of different channels but I never felt like I had a complete grasp of what they were trying to explain until I find one of your videos on the same subject. Then in the first 2 minutes you do what others couldn't manage to do in hours and then I go drive my wife crazy because I won't quit talking about saws! Keep up the great work and don't stop doing what you're doing. For young guys like me that are just taking an interest in saws, your videos are indispensable and a gold mine of knowledge for saws. Something that, for the are I live in especially, Is hard to find if not impossible. So thank you for the videos!

    This is an awesome video. Really clarity’s how 2 strikes are basically backwards from a 4 stroke where the charge enters the cylinder from the top side of the piston.

    Hey thx tinman..good shit..im a little late to the game at 48 but needed to learn how to work on my saws as I've been getting alot of logs bigger than my bandmill can handle..just built my first 660 kit n so far so good..ive found alot of pics of a mastermind ported cylinder n copied or tried n about to give'r a rip..thanks your videos were the ones that made it all come together for me w the wheel n timing..now it makes sense!!😂..have a goodun!!

    COOL VIDIEO!! and to make it more confusing when the exsaust port opens it produses a shock wave that travels into the silencer and a tuned pipe when set up propaly sends it back towards the exsaust port and hits it just as the trancfer ports open and block the new charge from escaping out the exsaust so you are burning more of the charge and predusing a bigger bang!! although i'm no expert and don't have a clue how to set them up but thats basicly what a tuned pipe dose on a 2 stroke.

    I already know all that. But now i know i don't know it all. You know what i mean? Are you going to touch on rotary valves? That's cool too. Detroit diesel have 2 cycles also, i believe piston ported. I think you need a tripod. Sound is good. Put some air in tire on lawn mower. Oh i just subscribed, i have more to tell you!

I have a new 372 xp x torq and was curious to know what tool would you suggest using two add a hole on the muffler? I want it to look clean and most of all function well. I guess some scratches wouldn’t be the end of the world considering it’s a saw muffler but I am super OCD lol. Hopefully not wasting your time and I could just look it up but I value your opinion tinman

    two strokes are simple but apparently 75% more power than 4 stroke , not as efficient but interesting, i rebuilt 2 stroke diesels for a while that was an interesting few months working at a friends business reconditioning train engines etc. you have a good nature just like Harvey said.

    Very informative video. How much $$ will one save by doing their own porting and polishing? Are most of the aftermarket cylinders/pistons able to be ported and polished?

    This helped so much. If I wanted to toy around with this stuff, is it possible to port a cheap 42cc saw? I have one I picked up for super cheap.

      Absolutely it is a perfect place to start. I have ported for strokes since I was a kid never really did much with two strokes other than clean up the ports because I didn't understand the timing end and didn't want to change it. But a few months ago I decided to start playing around with these curbside throw away weed eaters they're cheap and they're everywhere for free. Get on eBay or Amazon and buy yourself a timing degree wheel you can pick them up for less than twenty bucks well you're there buy a Dremel with a flex shaft and a set of carbide bits. Also a set of carburetor adjustment tools the 21 spline seems to be the most common and a package of fuel line. Each item here will be under $20 you could add a digital tach and still be under a hundred bucks. Get your engine running to the best it can run. Then put your degree wheel on it and write down your stock timing numbers in a notebook. Check your squish with some solder record that. Remove your base gasket if the engine your working on has one see where that put you record those timing and squish numbers. Make a plan and start carving. Sharpies layout bluing and a flashlight are your new friends. Put it back together see what difference should changes madeobviously most of the time you're going to have to change your fuel settings on that carburetor. Even just a muffler mod will change your fuel setting requirements. Most important don't be scared and have fun good luck my friend!

      Ironwood, welcome to the channel. Every saw is different so unfortunately its not just a matter of "use these numbers"
      Also it really depends on what you want to cut, how long of a bar and how you operate a saw.
      I'll be doing more videos on port timing very soon.

    Love your information..I can't find any information regarding kickback. Pre ignition when starting your saw.. stihl460,,,660 flywheel and keyway are fixed timing. I'm firing before tdc.. I got 2 saws I can't start..new short blocks on both saws. Any ideas?thank you

    Would you explain the resistance to exhaust flow that a muffler provides in relation to the compression stroke and why it affects engine performance. Basically I'm asking why a 2 stroke engine will run with the muffler removed and the same engine will not run when the stock muffler is installed, even if the stock muffler is not clogged. Will port timing influence the amount of muffler restriction required to provide optimal engine performance?

    I been seeing some saws that the exhaust is getting hot spots and carbon buildup. My question is can you take a die grinder with a cutoff wheel and place grooves on the skirt to help pull a draft around that side of the skirt to help cool it off?

      I'm not sure what you mean by hotspots?
      Are you meaning discoloration on the piston??
