I was a cutter for almost 30 years for logging companies. Even used a McCullough 125 in the early years. This guys for real. That's how you're supposed to do it. When you're out there in the woods and it depends on how much you cut, you learn things to be more productive because your family's lives depend on your abilities. This man is doing what every professional has done since I started cutting. My Father did it before me too. The same way he's doing it.
enjoyed the video!! My Dad was a logger all his life. He started at age 13 and stopped at age 82. The video brought back memories of watching him file his chainsaw. I remember he had a Stihl 090 model with a 5ft bar for the big trees. He had two circular sawmills and he sharpened them by hand as well. He was a wood man !!

Great video. I miss cutting firewood every year, from dropping trees and splitting it by hand an even stacking it all. But I lost the ability to walk and most days to even stand up. I truly miss them good ole days. Brings back those great old memories watching this video, thank you so much. At least I can still teach others the proper way of doing things with a saw like you are doing.
In a bunch of his videos he says he hits the back of the racker on the back stroke. Seems to be against the saw filing technique if ya know what I mean lol.
@@andrewlafogg4041 i know what you mean but it doesnt do any harm. The file only lightly touches the raker and neither the raker or file are affected. It keeps the file in the slot and lets you immediately have it in place for the next stroke. Lifting it out would be unnecessarily tedious. 😁
Billy, been cutting since 1977 and love the wood heat, but I have always struggled with the sharpening. What I have learned from you over the last couple of days I can't thank you enough. Be aware that you have truly made a difference for me. Your video of that chain with all the different size teeth just blows my mind. Folks, what Billy has taught me is that if each raker is in proper depth to "each" tooth, then there will be different size rakers, but the saw will cut perfectly straight. I had always used the depth gauge that lays across a bunch of teeth, instead of the one that lays on top of the tooth and goes down to the bottom of the tooth in front of it. Plus when the raker is filed, since the gauge is at an angle, the front of the raker gets filed at the same time it is lowered so there is no need to round it. Amazing stuff here Billy, you are the chain dentist. Plus I learned about the point and the gullet of each tooth, and how to do it free hand. Just blowing my mind, if only I had known this 43 years ago. Thank you Billy, thank you, thank you, thank you. I just now tonight bought the depth gauge. Have any tricks for human teeth?

It’s not the best saw but never had use for something on a pro level. Went through the carb and she fired up. Why spend money for something new and shiny when a classic will do the job. Thanks, coworker gave me a saw he couldn't get running. It just needed carb cleaning, but when I started cutting it would just make a fine dust. Thanks for the sharpening tutorial, now it cuts great!
I have to say I spent the 30 something minutes watching this video . after watching multiple videos from others on how to sharpen the chain. I finally got what I needed from your video to make my chain sharp and cut like brand new again. thank you for the time you put in this video. it definitely helped at least one person!
Just a Hillbilly from Kentucky here.. I have been using the 13/64 on my 3/8 chain cause that's what I was told to use but was reading the manual last night and it says to use a 7/32 file but the kicker is it tells me to angle my file 10 degrees in an upward motion and even though I haven't tried it I can already say that's not going to feel like a natural motion due to cutting into the strap of the chain and here I find the only video on TH-cam so far I've watched that explains it all. Getting my saw out today and trying that 7/32 file, thanks Bucking Billy for the helpful information. Your the man!!

I only ever use the one hand to file. I also preffer to run a saw I sharpened myself. I hate cutting wood with most people because once they see me file they always want me to sharpen/straighten there chains up, usually it takes more than a time or two because they are beat or at weird angles and what not. Great video, my last McCulloch, 25 years ago was a 5-49 : steel cable for a starter rope with a rotating carburetor. Lost but not forgotten. It was an experience to hear it run and cut that stays with you. The vexation of sharpening a saw for amateurs like me was gadgets. Always thinking I needed more than a file. Nothing beats you down like self doubt. It prevents you from so many experiences. You saying just get in there and get after it is some great advice. Love your channel.

By watching you on the latest season of Ax Men you taught me 4 things about cutting trees that I had never done before. So I took it upon myself to try them out. I Chop cutted a tree like you guys did. Then I climbed a tree with my chainsaw on a rope and cut the top out of it and went down 3 to 4 feet at a time. As I would cut the tree off I would push it away with my other hand. I was like wow both of those 2 things I seen you all do really work. The other 2 things using the 7/32nds file on my big Stihl chainsaw and a 3/16th file on my little Echo and little Stihl chainsaws. I also throw a weighted rope around trees I need to pull towards a certain way to miss a building etc. I always cut by myself and you guys really helped me overcome the fear of using a chainsaw......THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!!
Yep, this guy is the real deal. I followed my grandpa and my dad around in the Oregon woods from the late 60s and this is how they filed. I still file this way at a relatively young 60 years.

I lent one of my saws to my brother,it had a brand new out of the box chain,when I got it back every edge was rolled like that.This method got it back to where it should be!

I feel like factory/consumer instruction say to sharpen on an angle & with the smaller file, so you lose your gullet after a sharpen or two. That means you gotta buy another chain...😏👌 Sly buggers! I'm an August Hunicke fan and only this year discovered Billy's videos. Watched a few occasionally and not in any particular order. I was looking for info on the Timberline sharpener when I stumbled across this video today. Though old-school in technique, I watched the whole thing and decided to put Billy too on my regular watch list. Excellent camera work, narration, and editing. Very satisfying. PS: Not sure about needing that Timberline anymore (except maybe to use on 1/4" chain). Going to take a look at McCulloch's product lineup too.

I dont even understand why people try to find faster ways to sharpen theyr chains for example: rotary tools , that freakin tool where u attach it to the tip of the blade ( i dont even know its name , its disaster! ) , electric chainsaw grinder, and so on. I always get back to this video to refresh my memory. I don't understand why people run away from hand filing the chain when its really good and easy with proper technique and ofc practice , ive practiced on old chains watching this videos from exact this guy and now i wouldn’t change a hand file for even the best tool in the world! I get goosebumbs when watching his videos regarding sharpening the chain. Cheers!

I'm working with really hard wood "Aussie Iron Bark " and it's not kind to chain saw blades . I need to file befor every job , and if it's been hardened by bush fire , it can be toooo hard to cut and even a newly filed blade , it skips over the iron bark hard wood :) that's freaking hard wood :) I've got a huge respect for anyone with that many chain saws in his cubbord , thats the biggest chain saw collection I've ever seen , and your comment , " I'm so proud and humbled to own a chain saw like this " made me laugh when I saw you have at least 50 in the Cubbord . :) I'll get my file singing and skipping just like that , with some practice . I’ve been cutting Aussie hardwood using his sharpening tips and tricks and it’s been cutting like butter. I now notice my bar is cool to touch instead of hot using the guide and regular sharpening.

Thank you so much for this. I have forever struggled to get it right and have been using an electric one for years and have never been too impressed but it did the job. I took the time to watch this video and followed the instructions. I went and cut a ute load of wood today and my saw cut better than new.
I really do love filing my saws as well buckin! It's a calming task, & if done correctly can increase productivity. I rotate thru my saws & bring them inside after work. I like a clean/sharp saw to start my day😁👌 Some guys like to sharpen before work, but I guess I prefer after. Hope you had a good 2019 buckin! STAY SAFE
I tend to do it after when i don’t feel time pressure. Too often i’ll Tinker away though until i’m Suddenly aware that I should be home cooking and socializing, gotta keep the balance!!
It's true. When I sharpen my chain the way Buckin' teaches, my powersaw cuts faster, easier, better. If I keep practicing, maybe I'll start to get it every time.
Antonio Arellano Exactly! That's what all the nay sayers are missing. He's using the "tickle" of the back stroke to set up his next power stroke. He's NOT trying to cut on the back stroke. The back stroke is keeping him aligned. While he's filing, he's on autopilot, guided by his ears. Takes a while filing chains with damage, but all of a sudden, you're "in the groove" while filing. Your fingers and ears tell you there's a problem long before you see it. I just wish he'd shared more of his knowledge about raker height vs tooth angle. Your teeth can be dead sharp, but if your rakers are wrong, the chain cuts lousy.
Wish i would have never let my McCullough go. But I just learned what I've been doing wrong. My chains allways cut ok, but it seemed they were working too hard. Thks Ray, you're the CHAIN WHISPERER !

"what a saw".i also have and old cs525:clinton just as a show piece."needs a drive belt.Once again thanks so much for being on yourube.

Thanks, coworker gave me a saw he couldn't get running. It just needed carb cleaning, but when I started cutting it would just make a fine dust. Thanks for the sharpening tutorial, now it cuts great!

Just a Hillbilly from Kentucky here.. I have been using the 13/64 on my 3/8 chain cause that's what I was told to use but was reading the manual last night and it says to use a 7/32 file but the kicker is it tells me to angle my file 10 degrees in an upward motion and even though I haven't tried it I can already say that's not going to feel like a natural motion due to cutting into the strap of the chain and here I find the only video on TH-cam so far I've watched that explains it all. Getting my saw out today and trying that 7/32 file, thanks Bucking Billy for the helpful information. Your the man!!

Have a look up a stump vice for the field, $10 tool will save you a lot of frustration away from the shop.
Square tubeing slide right into Reese hitch put on a plate and then vise works great

I only ever use the one hand to file. I also preffer to run a saw I sharpened myself. I hate cutting wood with most people because once they see me file they always want me to sharpen/straighten there chains up, usually it takes more than a time or two because they are beat or at weird angles and what not. Great video, my last McCulloch, 25 years ago was a 5-49 : steel cable for a starter rope with a rotating carburetor. Lost but not forgotten. It was an experience to hear it run and cut that stays with you. The vexation of sharpening a saw for amateurs like me was gadgets. Always thinking I needed more than a file. Nothing beats you down like self doubt. It prevents you from so many experiences. You saying just get in there and get after it is some great advice. Love your channel.

I use the STIHL files also ... 13/64th for 3/8 .050 ... I found the ones that have Germany on the top work the best
You can soak your files in vinegar overbite too to make em last ... the reaction etched the cutting edge of the files

By watching you on the latest season of Ax Men you taught me 4 things about cutting trees that I had never done before. So I took it upon myself to try them out. I Chop cutted a tree like you guys did. Then I climbed a tree with my chainsaw on a rope and cut the top out of it and went down 3 to 4 feet at a time. As I would cut the tree off I would push it away with my other hand. I was like wow both of those 2 things I seen you all do really work. The other 2 things using the 7/32nds file on my big Stihl chainsaw and a 3/16th file on my little Echo and little Stihl chainsaws. I also throw a weighted rope around trees I need to pull towards a certain way to miss a building etc. I always cut by myself and you guys really helped me overcome the fear of using a chainsaw......THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!!!!
Yep, this guy is the real deal. I followed my grandpa and my dad around in the Oregon woods from the late 60s and this is how they filed. I still file this way at a relatively young 60 years.

I lent one of my saws to my brother,it had a brand new out of the box chain,when I got it back every edge was rolled like that.This method got it back to where it should be!

I feel like factory/consumer instruction say to sharpen on an angle & with the smaller file, so you lose your gullet after a sharpen or two. That means you gotta buy another chain...😏👌 Sly buggers! When you explained the gullet over time, it changed my filing for the better & it all made a bit more sense. I appreciate you for that....so THANK YOU👋😂

You can get it back. Just never use a electric sharpened. It goes straight down and gets to hot to. And losses the gusset 👍

I'm an August Hunicke fan and only this year discovered Billy's videos. Watched a few occasionally and not in any particular order. I was looking for info on the Timberline sharpener when I stumbled across this video today. Though old-school in technique, I watched the whole thing and decided to put Billy too on my regular watch list. Excellent camera work, narration, and editing. Very satisfying. PS: Not sure about needing that Timberline anymore (except maybe to use on 1/4" chain). Going to take a look at McCulloch's product lineup too.

I have gotten away from the timber years ago and now getting back to it again. There's no better feeling and peace it brings to me, hope it does the same for my boy.. I dont even understand why people try to find faster ways to sharpen theyr chains for example: rotary tools , that freakin tool where u attach it to the tip of the blade ( i dont even know its name , its disaster! ) , electric chainsaw grinder, and so on. I always get back to this video to refresh my memory. I don't understand why people run away from hand filing the chain when its really good and easy with proper technique and ofc practice , ive practiced on old chains watching this videos from exact this guy and now i wouldn’t change a hand file for even the best tool in the world! I get

In all seriousness: you are indeed very skilled at this, and made it much simpler than I ever thought it to be! I’ve done the double angle and it’s very challenging. I dreaded sharpening it because I couldn’t get it sharp, in spite of a sharpening guide!

Thanks for the advice ! I'm going to be brave and put the file guide away :) and really concentrate on keeping my angles right , and getting that C :) . I'm working with really hard wood "Aussie Iron Bark " and it's not kind to chain saw blades .
I need to file befor every job , and if it's been hardened by bush fire , it can be toooo hard to cut and even a newly filed blade , it skips over the iron bark hard wood :) that's freaking hard wood :)
I've got a huge respect for anyone with that many chain saws in his cubbord , thats the biggest chain saw collection I've ever seen , and your comment , " I'm so proud and humbled to own a chain saw like this " made me laugh when I saw you have at least 50 in the Cubbord . :)

I’ve been cutting Aussie hardwood using his sharpening tips and tricks and it’s been cutting like butter. I now notice my bar is cool to touch instead of hot using the guide and regular sharpening.
This is the most informative and best chain sharpening video i have found. We've got 15 trees down and my chain is so sharp now its cutting through so fast it is amazing. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

Thank you so much for this. I have forever struggled to get it right and have been using an electric one for years and have never been too impressed but it did the job. I took the time to watch this video and followed the instructions. I went and cut a ute load of wood today and my saw cut better than new.

I rotate thru my saws & bring them inside after work. I like a clean/sharp saw to start my day😁👌
Some guys like to sharpen before work, but I guess I prefer after.

I tend to do it after when i don’t feel time pressure. Too often i’ll Tinker away though until i’m Suddenly aware that I should be home cooking and socializing, gotta keep the balance!!
I do it when I have time, either right after cutting, or heading out to cut, but I also have at least 2 spare chains with me at all times!

It's true. When I sharpen my chain the way Buckin' teaches, my powersaw cuts faster, easier, better. If I keep practicing, maybe I'll start to get it every time.

Antonio Arellano Exactly! That's what all the nay sayers are missing. He's using the "tickle" of the back stroke to set up his next power stroke. He's NOT trying to cut on the back stroke. The back stroke is keeping him aligned. While he's filing, he's on autopilot, guided by his ears. Takes a while filing chains with damage, but all of a sudden, you're "in the groove" while filing. Your fingers and ears tell you there's a problem long before you see it.
I just wish he'd shared more of his knowledge about raker height vs tooth angle. Your teeth can be dead sharp, but if your rakers are wrong, the chain cuts lousy.
Wish i would have never let my McCullough go. But I just learned what I've been doing wrong. My chains allways cut ok, but it seemed they were working too hard. Thks Ray, you're the CHAIN WHISPERER !
I’ve been watching your videos for years and I need to say Thank You! Never thought I could sharpen a chain better than a Stihl chain fresh out of the box…I was WRONG! I purchased files for my various chains and I’m impressing myself with how all the saws cut. So thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
