      I can easily imagine how a lot of these people on Fake Disorder Cringe might have lived with their conditions, and only knew shame and self hatred. Only to see red, when noticing others expressing themselves in a seemingly lighthearted ( or at the very least non-morose ) fashion, in regards to their condition. And thus decided to lash out in this manner.

    One of the reasons that an autistic person like me might not get a diagnosis is because of discrimination. Both my psychologist & psychiatrist say I am almost certainly autistic, but we decided that it would not be in my best interests to pursue an official diagnosis because my abusive ex-husband would almost certainly use it against me in child custody matters... Sometimes not getting a diagnosis is protective... It doesn't make me any less autistic though.

    • @misspat7555
      @misspat7555 หลายเดือนก่อน +95

      As an AuDHD lady who has dealt with a contentious custody situation for over 15 YEARS now, yes, absolutely, putting yourself in a vulnerable position is a BAD idea! I just got diagnosed, but have not thrown it around out in the world just yet, though I feel I’m safe from any custody challenge at this point. There will come a day when it may be safer for you to get a diagnosis; I got mine to try to ensure my daughter (who is also AuDHD) and myself stay housed, fed, and provided with medical care long-term. Or, you may never choose to pursue formal diagnosis, and that is also fine! Just wanted to reinforce that your instincts here are GOOD! 👍

      Also, many countries don't accept immigrants who are diagnosed autistic! So if you plan to move to a different country, or if you worry you may have to escape your home country, having a diagnosis can prevent you from being able to leave your home country.
      Along with many other forms of discrimination against autistic people. You can be denied jobs, proper medical care (lots of US doctors will ignore autistic patients' health complaints), loss of custody of their children as you've already mentioned, denied gender affirming care, and on the more extreme end some people have been institutionalized or forced into conservatorship (which strips so many rights to autonomy) solely for being autistic. Just to name a few, I am quite possibly forgetting some things.
      If I could afford a diagnosis, I would still probably not seek one out as I am trans and the greater risk of being mistreated by doctors is just dangerous for me. I already have had to deal with enough of that without the diagnosis.

      Hey friend, I just want you to know that I am sorry this happened and I do believe you. Seeing so many people claim others are “faking” their disorder with no evidence is so gross. You do not owe people your medical history or diagnostic status, especially assholes on the internet that will use the diagnosis(or lack thereof) against you.
      I work in a psychiatry clinic and I truly believe the first step to getting help is realizing something is off. You cannot get an autism diagnosis as an adult without realizing something is sort of “off” about you.. that being said, self diagnosis is the first step to getting help and making life more manageable. I would’ve never gotten an ADHD diagnosis at 19 if I didn’t realize for myself that I probably had adhd.
      It has been an incredibly frustrating experience as a neurodivergent woman in their early 20s navigating the workforce in nursing. My coworkers will often get annoyed with me for asking clarifying questions, being “too much”, or getting overwhelmed. i think the reason why people on the subreddit get so angry over autistic /and or adhders talk about harmless traits is because they relate to them themselves. neurotypicals are terrified of being seen as neurodivergent that they have to quickly say that "oh, but i do x, it doesn't mean i'm y". they always take it personally, making it about themselves.

    • @AbiZoey
      @AbiZoey 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +24

      From what I've seen of the subreddit, it's more so autistic people who know they're autistic, but really struggle with it and can't stand seeing other autistic people living their lives happily and authentically, with a side of also wanting an easy target to blame for their struggles. IIRC there's actually a rule on the subreddit that you can't bring up your own diagnosis because so many people were doing that. I've seen a lot of people on there who get very very angry about autistic people finding any sort of joy in the way they are because "if they were actually autistic they'd know it's horrible and awful and there's nothing good about it!" I think a lot of the hate comes from a place of genuine pain (and yes, definitely also internalised ableism).
      I've seen a similar sort of pattern in transmedicalist communities (which have a *huge* user overlap with the fakedisordercringe subreddit) - it's just a whole lot of very angry people flying into a rage over teenagers enjoying exploring their gender identity and coming up with quirky neopronouns, because they can't imagine a way of being trans that isn't just endless suffering. They claim that if those people were really trans, they'd be miserable 24/7 and wouldn't be able to celebrate their identity and have fun with it. It's a whole lot of projection. And then there's also the attitude of "if these fakers just went away then we'd be treated better! They're the reason for all our problems!" - which is obviously just not true in the slightest, but I can see how it's a comforting thought, in a way. When you're struggling, it's easier to blame it on a single cause, because then it feels like there's a light at the end of the tunnel, like if this one thing would change then everything would be okay again.
      It's very sad really once you start thinking about the mentality of those types of people and where it comes from. It's not an excuse for bullying of course, but I can empathise with that feeling of hopelessness and feeling completely disconnected and isolated from others who are more positive about their circumstances.

    As a future social worker I see so many issues in these type of behaviours besides the bullying.
    1. You cannot diagnose a person based on a one minute video! Doesn't matter if you're a trained professional or not. A diagnosis is formed based on many different medical exams (physical tests, interviews of the patiens and sometimes their parents etc.). Such a video is nowhere near enough for a correct diagnosis.
    2. It is possible that some of these people fake a disorder. Faking a disorder for attention is obviously not okay and can cause serious issues for those who actually have the disorder that is faked in the video, mainly because of stigmas and misconceptions. That doesn't give anybody the right to bully said people! You can educate others why that is damaging and the possible consequences of said behaviour.
    3. We also have to keep in mind that faking a disorder for attention means that there are serious issues in these peoples lives (e.g. lack of love and care from parents or supposed loved ones etc.). Faking a disorder for attention can be a symptom of a mental health condition as well (munchhausen syndrome).

      While it may be possible that some people might be actually faking medical conditions, that doesn't mean that someone should accuse a person for "faking it". Fakeclaiming is damaging, no matter what. Come to think of it, isn't fakeclaiming basically slander?

    • @lucyla9947
      @lucyla9947 หลายเดือนก่อน +49

      Also even if they aren't Autistic, that doesn't necessarily mean they're faking.
      It's possible they have some other Condition like ADHD, and mistook their symptoms for Autistic symptoms when it's something else. That doesn't make them a Faker. It's completely understandable for someone who realizes that something is different with them to try and go search for an answer, and sometimes they make a mistake or their sources are unreliable so they wind up thinking that they have something they don't actually have. Most self-diagnosed Autistics don't have the training to fully evaluate their symptoms, and it's perfectly understandable that a few might've gotten it wrong. Those people don't deserve bullying either.

      Exactly! These people on this sub and others who "expose" supposed fakers are literally just armchair psychologists.
      Also, if they think they're all doing this for attention, why are they giving these people what they want? Would 't reposting their video onto a subreddit and trying to make them infamous basically be giving them attention like they want? A person like that won't care if they recieve negative attention, because attention is all they want. If these people really think they're doing this just for attention, they should just ignore them and do something more productive with their lives.

      If for some reason the person really was proven to be faking neurodivergence, at least then they would be better investigators and may use it as a way to “identify people who are faking disorders”, but the cringe part makes it clear that even if they limited their scope to people they can prove are faking neurodivergence they would still mock them. Other comments point out that either way the person is not ok; either they have comorbidities, lack a stereotypical trait, or are lying which itself indicates another mental disorder or a need for attention or is a cry for help. So even if it wasn’t just an excuse for freely mocking mentally ill people and neurodivergent people, at its core it will lead to mockery.

    • @narrowwing
      @narrowwing 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@llynxfyremusic I don't think it's "cringe" alters that are a sign of faking. People can have "cringe" habits relating to a nerodivergence/mental illness they have because that's just how one has adapted or learned to cope. It's the people in their mid 20s (past the time where your brain kinda just solidifies habits and personality traits, not impossible, just a hell of a lot more difficult for people to change past that point) who suddenly have a whole new systems worth of alters, or people who trade their alters.
      There's also a mental illness that you literally just mimic mental illnesses to the point where you believe you have it, and I guess basically do have it in some cases because of just how much you've convinced yourself.
      I don't feel the need to expose, because it could be a different issue that's resulted in faking, but there's signs that makes me wary of a person. I've delt with too many scummy people who fake stuff just to make you feel bad for leaving them so that you stay in that unhealthy/abusive relationship.

    Do they believe that anyone who speaks about their experiences are faking for attention, and therefore are overshadowing the """"real people who struggle""""" or do they not believe that autism exists and that no one actually ever has autism? Why is it the fact of trying to relate to similar experiences the thing that makes it "fake" disorder?
    Can anyone talk about any invisible disability or are they presumed faking until proven real? Does any disability exist? Can anyone talk about anything ever without being shamed for seeking attention?
    Can humans recieve attention without it being a bad thing? Is being a human seeking connection toxic????? (/s on this part)

      The answer is that these people on the subreddit actually want attention and an “in-group” and they’re jealous that autistic people seemingly have one without “much effort” (because look at how bad we look, the idea of acting unappealingly and getting an in-group as a result, that is “easy to fool into accepting you” is preposterous and worthy of shame).
      So, they create an in-group based around that bitterness, spite and jealousy. It’s like bullying the popular kid, but easier because we’re so unconventional and they don’t have to worry about offending anyone who’s actually ‘cool’.
      TLDR, they accuse people of wanting attention because *they* want the attention.

    It's possible that they have some other Condition, and just mistook it for Autism.
    It's perfectly understandable that when someone realizes they're not the same as everyone else is, for them to go searching for an answer. And most people don't have the adequate training to accurately categorize their symptoms, so it's perfectly possible that someone who doesn't have Autism, but is some other variety of Neurodivergent, to make a mistake and self-diagnose themselves as Autistic, when in reality there's something else going on.
    Doctors misdiagnose Patients occasionally, it's not that far fetched that some Patients accidentally misdiagnose themselves. They aren't acting in bad faith, they don't deserve to be bullied. They just made a mistake, and we should still support them.

      This! A lot of ADHDers and Autistic people have some kind of circadian-rythmn dysfunction, i for one have non-24-hour-sleep-wake-syndrome (which basically means my sleeping rythmn is 26 hours instead of 24 hours which makes it always cycle around the clock and i'm unable to change that) as well as delayed sleep wake phase disorder (which means that i naturally fall asleep much later that most people) These disorders are proportionally way more common in neurodivergent folks than in non-ND people. They can't be "healed" and one has to learn to somehow manage them themselves. What i do is i sleep directly after school until midnight, stay awake for two hours to do homework and some other stuff and then sleep again until school. I still struggle tho. I always struggled with this for my whole life. I don't have time left to do much more than trying to get the sleep i didn't get but i still end up tired, a couple other issues i have tend to play into that as well.

      Yikes, that made me remember my own pretty similar experience when I saw a psychiatrist for a referral to an ASD specialist and she just wasn’t listening to me. Essentially said that she felt I was suffering from social anxiety, not autistic, and refused to give me a referral. So, I had to spend a lot of money to go to a non-governmental clinic for my diagnosis instead.
      On the upside, she accepted that she was wrong after I got my ASD diagnosis and showed it to her before I dropped her to change to another doctor, she didn’t even apologise for invalidating me, saying that I was “crying because I’m not getting what I want” or costing me thousands of dollars, and excused herself saying my “autism is so mild that only an ASD specialist would recognise it”. I’m like, you could try *listening to your patients* and taking them seriously when they present you with their experience and medical history.
      Like, it was so easy for the ASD specialist, she looked at all the medical tests, I’d seen a neurologist before, physiotherapist, gastrointestinal specialist, and my mom and partner were able to give comprehensive accounts of my behaviour. She said I was one of the easiest to diagnose as autistic because I had such solid evidence and consistent accounts.
      The rude psychiatrist didn’t even listen to my mom when she talked about how I didn’t grow for 3 months as a baby or my childhood behaviour. My mom was probably more angry at the doctor than I was honestly haha
      Some people are just awful, so don’t feel bad about the breakdown, I hope things go well for you and even if we end up there for some reason, we just gotta keep reminding ourselves that these peoples’ opinions don’t matter because they don’t know jack squat.

You can't be mocking by doing something seriously (like interacting with an object as a person without the intent of doing it to mock people that do that as well). Being seen as strange isn't the same as trying to mock others that are also seen as strange.

    About the sleep problems and autism/ADHD thing. I recently started taking melatonin after struggling with sleep issues my entire life, my therapist suggested i start taking it after she read that autistic people often have low melatonin levels.
    After only 6 days of supplementing I've noticed a huge improvement :) I still have trouble getting up but I noticed that I don't need as much time to 'boot up' as I used to and I don't feel daytime sleepiness as much anymore.

    That one video you showed got to me. ‘Sensory issues are not something you’d ever wish to have’ like no shite Karen and Kevin. I don’t want them. But I have them regardless of what I want so let me post online like every other human being does to share and talk about the issues and sometimes the occasional cool thing being autistic brings. There are many people who have more severe support needs than me, you are correct about that. But you know the societal changes and accommodations many of us are advocating for will help those with higher support needs as well right?! Because I don’t think you get that. If you did you would be happy for your child that others who share a neurotype to him are advocating for people like them and like him. People with lower support needs and who are getting on and talking about these things FINALLY in the general population are the ones making autism more well known and those ‘quirky’ people you hate are making autism less of a mystery to others and more of a reality. That is a good thing.
    Sorry. I’ll hop off my soap box now. It’s not like these people will ever see this.

    I really really want to thank you for what you and your channel have done for the Autistic community and for my growth as a person. I'm someone who was diagnosed very young (i know now that that's unusual, and I was very lucky to start seeing a great mental health team as basically a toddler) so I've lived over 20 years, most of my life, knowing or at least having some concept that I'm Autistic. For so many years in my small town, I didn't think there were other Autistic people around me. None of my peers were talking about being diagnosed and I was regularly given either the "what's that?" response when I told people, or just ignorant misunderstandings they got from Autism Speaks. I think growing up this way really lead me to unintentionally build walls up with the Autistic community I could have now. I've never been a member of "fake disorder cringe" thank god, but I have held similar beliefs about "self-diagnosed" autistic people or even people diagnosed as adults. I kept thinking things like, "i'm so tired of everyone taking my lived experience that has been at times traumatic, and turning it into a trend. these people must be faking because it's 'cool' to be autistic now". But through a lot of your videos i've come to understand how wrong I was for thinking that way. You've pretty much opened my eyes to the drastic underrepresentation of women in autism diagnoses which could lead to them discovering their autism later in life, and so many other things that make me cringe at how I thought a year ago. Anyway, this comment is long af but yeah, thank you.

    Once I checked out this subreddit, one of the top posts was a picture of text and the hand flapping stimming emoji you see everywhere. And it had text saying “no thoughts, only happy hand flaps. Flappy flappy flappy. Happy flapping” etc. and EVERYONE zeroed in on the clear joke of “no thoughts, only happy hand flaps” and portrayed it as the poster thinking autistic people are stupid. When it’s a very common meme phrase 😭 it tells me that they aren’t coming from a good mindset or what to protect the disordered community. They’re just nitpicking everything they see and call it fake or offensive, even if it’s not.

    I used to watch cringe compilations when I was young, around middle school age. And I distinctly remember the point where I went to watch one of those videos and it was just… so distasteful. I found myself relating to the people (often minors) in the videos or feeling sympathy for them more than laughing at them. I think that was a big turning point for me realizing that a lot of what is labeled “cringe” is just an excuse to bully people who are different

    Meg!! :D Just so you know, if you want to have fun coloured hair, you can increase longevity by not using hair products with sulfates and adding a bit of the chosen hair dye into your conditioner. Leave the conditioner in your hair for a little bit longer than usual, maybe 5 mins. You can do longer if you really want to re-up the colour. :) It helps keep a more pastel colour present after initial fading. :)❤

    14:43 I have been saying this!! I think that, perhaps in the next DSM, they may consider either combining the diagnoses, or at the VERY least making note of their high comorbidity rates and common traits, such as special interests, difficulty shifting focus, emotional dysregulation, etc. Afaik, the DSM-V doesn't even mention them as related conditions, which is absurd because they clearly are. I believe we all (as humans) have things we we can add to certain conversations, but no one can add something of value to every conversation. I hope this helps.
