    You are a legend!!!! I have been searching everywhere with no luck so far. I am aving a problem with black smoke and bad acceleration, figured it might be a skipped timing on the exhaust cam.

    Thanks I just bought a grand am with the twin cam in it. Its my every day car. It has about 190k on it but the water pump is going. I pulled another engine from pick n pull and I'm rebuilding that engine so I can drop it in and not have to worry about engine problems for another 20 years. I'm only about 800 into it and it's almost done

    Thank you for the video. I’m working on the timing chain for a 2001 Chevy cavalier with the GM 2.4L engine. I suspected this car had a timing issue for a while, because whenever you let off the gas it would backfire slightly. Then, all of a sudden it just started running poorly with misfiring randomly. It threw code p0300. I suspected timing for a while and just dove right in. Upon pulling the timing cover and pinning the camshafts in time, I noticed that the crankshaft spur gear looked like it was about one tooth possibly two past the mark for TDC. If the chain had jumped, wouldn’t the cam gears be out of alignment as well? I ask this because when I pinned the cam gear with the pin through the hole in the timing housing, I was able to pin the other cam gear as well. If the timing had jumped a tooth, I wouldn’t think that both cam gears would line up with their timing marks. Is it possible that the crank gear could have free wheeled a bit and the tensioner took out that slack and allowed for the cams to stay in time, at least relative to one another? I’m not sure if it’s the original chain or not but I’m sure it is possible that someone could have installed the chain incorrectly after having not set the crank gear at TDC. Just looking for some input on this. Thanks in advance!

    The Chiltions Online and my factory service manual said to go clockwise 90 degrees and then come back counter clockwise once cams were pinned, which is what I did, but I don't think it would matter because 2 and 3 would be down half way either direction and heading down when you came back to TDC on 1 and 4.

  • @Sonyman34
    @Sonyman34 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question, I'm doing right now what you did on the engine. How did you install the harmonic balancer? I'm having hard time finding a tool to fit the crankshaft to install it back. Or did you use the crank bolt?

    • @LD9user
      @LD9user  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can just use the crank bolt to pull it on. It will slide on easily. Depending on what year or resource you use for torque, it's 129 ft lbs or 133 ft lbs. After that it's another 90 degrees to reach final torque. That can be tough.

    Adam from Poland
    My name is Adam and I live in Poland. My car is a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix. I have trouble with the engine that when starting, when it is cold, rattles very loudly under the timing cover. It takes a few seconds and then it is normal. When the engine is hot, you can hear the sounds from under the timing cover but much more quietly. My timing is type 1, has double gears and the chain is also double. The tensioner is type 1 (BT188). I dismantled the cover and everything is fine, the chain has no play and the wheels are not worn but it all makes a lot of noise. What can I do ? Can I buy a type 2 tensioner? will he help and will it fit? Should I also buy a new chain and sprockets? Or maybe you need to use a new type of chain and sprockets (2nd design)? Will it make it much quieter? I am asking you for help, because I really like this car and I have it for 24 years.

      What other engines do they run in that class ? I have been racing a quad 4 , starting in 1988 when GM sent me a test engine to run in a F/Dragster . I got one of the first 180 hp engines made , and I am still racing it today . I never did put it into the dragster , because NHRA had no idea how small the 4valve OHC engines were . So we could not get down to the minimum weight . So I built a snowmobile around the engine . I have run the engine in many different configurations . Starting with the speed density FI , then changing to sheet metal intake w single throttle body , then dual throttle bodies , but always dealing with the factory rev limiter . So then I changed to Webbers along with a distributor I made to eliminate the rev control . I also built a intake manifold for a Holley 780 carb . On the engine dyno the engine made 233 Ib ft tq @ 5300 and 291 HP at 7400 rpm . I still have a ton of parts for the Quad engines . This is a great engine , the sled weights 1154 lbs with me on it and it has ran 154mph .

      First, you should really check out the Oldsmobile Quad 4 Twin Cam Facebook page. It's a great group with some very knowledgeable folks.
      As far as what motors everyone runs, around here Neon's are everywhere. Longer tracks favor Cavaliers with the ecotec. There are some Honda's too. Most rule packages state: "Must be stock appearing." So it's pretty much open competition for all the Honda guys.

    Hello hoping you see this comment and can lend some advice!! My quad 4 motor has the other style of tensioner where the tensioner and shoe are separate, and I broke the little piece of plastic that holds in the extra spring that yours doesn’t seem to use. Would you happen to have one for sale, or is it even that important can I run it without the spring? It seems like the tensioner and shoe are doing their job and the little spring isn’t helping too much anyway!

    • @LD9user
      @LD9user  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could be one of 3 things. A bad tensioner. Bad lifters. Or, the bottom end is out of it. You should note, these motors often make a lot of valve train noise after a rebuild. It takes a while for the lifters to get pumped up. If you had the head and cams off or you're running new lifters, that could be the cause of the noise.

    What's the difference between a 2.3 L and the 2.4 L and am l correct to say that this engines interchange. I have a 95 2.3 Pontiac Sunfire I am needing to put a 2.4 in the car. Do to a so called cracked block

    • @LD9user
      @LD9user  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 2.4 will bolt right into your 95. The upper motor mount is the same. I believe the lower mount is different so you will need the 2.4 lower engine mounting bracket (the part that bolts to the motor). You will need the 2.4 exhaust manifold and down pipe to hook up the exhaust. The only other thing you'll need to convert a 95 quad 4 to the 96-up 2.4 is to modify the knock sensor mount on the back of the block. They were changed a couple times after 95. My suggestion is to make your knock sensor adapter while the motor is out of the car so you'll have plenty of room to work.
