    Seeing you do it and noting stuff about replacement order and where the chain should be, etc. will save somebody's bacon in the future. Could be mine. Thanks.

      Hopefully it will help someone, but they only used this engine through 02 or 03, so they are probably going to the crusher and onto the great parking lot in the sky by the hundreds every day now.

      I think a lot of what you showed and said can be applied to other engines and why the video is so helpful. Things like checking how many links on the chain between the cam gears; putting a rod (drill bit, screwdriver, etc) in the gear so you don't move it accidentally ; checking for stretch in the chain; order of disassembly and being careful to reassemble the same way, locktite and conversion table to GM specs; using an online Chilton's guide to get instructions and specs; the little plunger thing on the tensioner (I never would have thought of that). So, I think it has been a great video series. When you start it up, you could edit in the sound of a 1000 HP engine just to mess with folks. :)

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure. This one turned out not to be the timing chain. I had a cracked ring on cylinder 3. I rebuilt the engine. A common problem on these that causes rough idle though is the vacuum line going to the MAP sensor rots out.

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the mileage a Timing chain and tensioners are probably a good idea anyway, but I would be suspicious of a bad lifter. These engines are known for having some of these types of issues on the top end. I would try adding Rislone with your next oil change and see if it clears up. I don't recommend most additives, if you have a sticky/dirty lifter Rislone is something I have had success with to keep from having to tear it down.

    G'day Tom,
    Yay Team !
    It begins to appear that "Ah, Pontiac problems..., eh (?) ; probably a stretched Timing-Chain...!", may be some kind of Commercial Mechanic's Urban Myth, perhaps often quoted to both casual Enquirers and prospective Customers, in the sure knowledge that in Labour as well as Swearing-Hours it's easier and cheaper to swap the sick Donkey for an Exchange-Engine than to actually replace the Chain with the Engine remaining in place...(?).
    That way they divert Backyard Mechanics off down a complicated and difficult Knuckle-Barking Dry-Gulch which they'll probably make a mess of, and the Customers will happily buy the (now repaired) last Engine which they pulled out of the previous "Mark" whom they skinned on the trot (!).
    Have a good one,
    ;-p
    Ciao !

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't have valve covers. I has cam towers. They are a bit of a job to do. I charge $500 labor to do one. To do them you have to take off the outer timing cover, timing chain, inner timing cover, exhaust manifold, and take off the 3 bolts for water pump. Rotate engine 90 degrees when timing chain is off, before you take of the cam sprockets. Make sure you put a towel in the bottom of timing cover when you get the inner off so you don't drop bolt in the oil pan. If you drop a bolt then you have to remove oil pan. Use Indian head gasket sealant on the new cam tower gaskets, and the white permatex gasket sealant on all of the bolts. If you don't it will leak when you are done. I recently tore this down and did mine again. 3 days of work by the time is was done. th-cam.com/video/knpkbxOV90s/w-d-xo.html

    rhetorical question, why would you design an interference head for an Engine? BTW good video

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Better Compression which equals Better Performance, Higher Efficiency and Fuel Mileage. Better Question though is why design an interference engine with a rubber timing belt instead of a metal chain. I liked my German 2.8 V6 that I had in my Mustang. It was interference (and the Isky Cam and 80 thousanths shaved of the heads made it seriously interfenced), but it had a steel gear to gear timing, with solid lifters. I also loved the offset head and the bottom end was built like a tank. I could wrap that thing up 10,000 RPM's before it would float the valves out of it. The cam's power range was 5K to 8.5K RPM.

    I have to replace my water pump and I was wondering is there anything else I would have to take off to take it out from this point?

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you will need to pull the exhaust manifold off to get to the water pump. Some pull the whole inner timing cover which involve removing the cam sprockets and a bunch more gaskets. It's it tight but you can get the water pump done without removing the inner timing cover.

    Can you change the waterpump housing without changing the waterpump?

    • @frugalprepper
      @frugalprepper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean by the housing. There is a pipe that comes off of the water pump and there is a housing there, and goes to the thermostat. You can get to that if you pull the exhaust manifold. To change the water pump you will have to pull the timing chain and the exhaust manifold though. You can get a better idea how the water pump is setup on my video here where I rebuilt this engine: th-cam.com/video/Hbl4FULhS78/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Tom. Thanks for the video. I'm not familiar with online resources for engines that you show. Can you give a little background, or do a video on getting a subscription or membership to online car data for engines or body work? Looks like Chilton's (chiltonsdiy.com) might be $29.95 a year. If so, not a bad deal. Thanks for the video.

    • @frugalprepper

      It is the Chilton's Library Online. Check with your local library and see if they have it. You can sign in and use it as much as you want if you're a library member. If they don't have it, ask them to get it. It's way less expensive for them than buying all of the Chilton's books and Hyanes manuals for the reference section, and it is s huge benefit to the community.
