HOW TO: Swap a Th350 to an LS engine early vs late flexplate comparison

  • I have made videos before describing how I mate an old transmission to the LS engine. But I've never had both different flexplates side by side. On the early 99-00 4.8s and 6.0s they use a longer crankshaft and flat flex plate to work with the 4l80e. With engines that used the 4L60e Gm used the dished flexplate which required the step bushing style spacer. Fortunately for what I am doing with the 6.0 I need no spacer. The only mod I need to make is to oval out the mounting holes on the factory flexplate..
    Easy peazy.

    Thank you for this video, I have a early 2000 LQ4 I’m mating to a TH350 and was worried the flex plate didn’t quite line up to TC. So, drilling out crossed my mind but wasn’t sure!!! Thank you!

    Appreciate that dawg I had to drill out those holes on the flex plate today putting a built 350 turbo with a 2500 stall behind that ls.

    I used Chevrolet's spacer, longer bolts and a flat flexplate that I got from a 4.8 that had a 4L80. My friend at a machine shop drilled new holes for me. I took my convertor along so he could accurately locate my holes to be drilled. He made some spacers for the convertor bolts so I had the 1/8 inch clearance with the convertor pushed back into the trans. The 1/8 clearance is needed so the convertor doesn't pull out of the pump too much.

    I just put a th350 in a 2000 silverado with a 4.8 only because of your videos ....so a big thanks to you sir ... watched at least 10 times but put it in with no trouble and shifts great..keep them coming

    I have a 5.3 dished flexplate I have the swap flexplate and I have the cockring spacer the converter is all way in Trans and I have a big gap and the end of the converter is not all way in the crank where I put the cockring and pointers

    I have a 1992 454 ss truck with a early 4l80e transmission. I also have a 1998 C5 Ls1 im swapping into it. Do you know if that early 4l80e will work with the ls1 engine? If so what do you think I will need to make it work?. Thanks in advance.

    Just wondering. I got this set up for my Truck. The 350th Im using has a 3600 stall on it. Do you know if these have issue with larger stalls, Motor is just stock 5.3 with Long tubes, straight pipe ,Sloppy stage 2 cam and beehive springs . other than that all stock .

    i just swapped out my sbc/th350 and attached my 5.3 LS to TH350 with the collar/sleeve but the convertor bolts seemed short and i had to suck the convertor away from trannyy about 3/8 of an inch. is that a problem or normal?

    What about a 98 z28 LS1 with 4l60E going to TH400. What do I need if using factory flexplate? Also, I have a 3600 rpm stall TC in the car now.. Do I need to swap to a TH400 torque converter?

    Is there a difference in a TH400 Flexplate and a 700R4 flexplate on a 1982 Chevy 350 engine ? I just swapped the TH400 out of my old 82 Chevy 350 cu.in. Cube van and put in a 1991 700R4. I had the driveshaft shortened and a new 27 spline Slip yoke installed...It bolted right up...but I am getting a rumbling noise near the Torque Converter....not sure what it is... I haven't taken it out on the road yet... as I don't want to make things worse !

    Ok I gott a question I'm not a transmission guy but I have a 2500 stall brand new in box I got a steal for 100 bucks I have a 4.8 ls your converter bolt holes are on the back like mine ..so di I take the flexplate off and bolt it in through the back if I do will converter bolts be hitting anything cus I looked and thiers not much room for a head of a bolt to b sticking out I have looked everywhere this is only video were your converter bolt holes are like mine ..so take flexplate off volt converter to it or what ???? Any help would be grateful..thanks

    So just to be CLEAR & CONCISE, my 2003 Ls 5.3L will bolt up to my 84 cutlass th350 with just that spacer/sleeve thing and probly die grinding the flexplate?

      As long as your th350 has chevy bell.

    Hey man not on topic of this vid but when using the msd 6014 to fire the packs it says it needs to hooked up to a "fused" battery with your 30 amp relay as it shouldn't be hooked up directly to 12 volt source. Are you using on if the "fused" adapters on your battery or the 30 amp relay?

      I'm using the 12v keyed source that originally powered the distributor.

      only 99 and 2000 had the long crankshaft 2001 and up used a spacer

    I have a 2003 6.0 with the longcrank shaft. I didn’t use the cock ring and my th350 isn’t wanting to go into drive.

      Plate? Probably have the wrong converter in, had it happen to a friend, trans didn’t wanna rotate

    so you are saying on an early 6.0 the only mod needed is to elongate the converter bolt holes? ever had an issue with the th350 converter not allowing the bell housing flange to meet up? like the converter is out to far. i think its in all the way, i tried for a good while to get it further in but no luck, trying to figure this out.

      Add bushings. We had that issue with a 4.8

    Does it have to be a non locking th350....because i have the th350c with the lock up that came origonal with my truck and want to keep it so do i just hook back up the factory wirirng or what?

    I hate to be that guy, so if you have a dished flexplate and buy the spacer, can you keep the dished flexplate? Or must you buy the spacer/flat flexplate

      Dished flywheel. Keep the flywheel and the spacer.. Flat flywheel typically found on early 4.8s and 6.0s.. With long cranks. Spacer usually not needed.

      99 used the long crank as did some early 2000s. The 5.3 in all yrs used the shorter crank and dished flex plate

      Not needed.. the Step bushing is all you need. No bolts required
