Love your series. Doing some engine work on my '99 Chevy Cavalier Z24. Recently sub'd. Couple questions for you if you can 😉 The non original (one piece) tensioner and guide...do you have a part #/is it just the one for prev generation ld9's? I have a rattle from right side engine, hence I'm doing timing job. Is there a chance my LD9 has suffered lifter collapse as well? The engine never went out of time.
This is the greatest series of a walkthrough on a 2.4 rebuild on TH-cam! AWESOME! 😎 I have a question though. After doing my timing/water pump job, I'm having a hard time purging the coolant system of air. And gravity is not one of my problems. It seems I have a air pocket trapped in the block of my 2.4 Are there any threaded purge plugs I can pull to evacuate air, and get the sytem to draw in the coolant?
I drill a small 1/16" hole in the outside portion of the thermostat. It allows air and coolant to pass through the system. If you dont feel like doing that, disconnect the upper radiator hose at the head. Slowly fill the reservoir tank and repeatedly squeeze the lower radiator hose. When you see coolant in the top radiator hose, reconnect it to the head. From there, you should be able to start the motor and the air pocket will move. It will still take a small amount if coolant after that but that should get you going.
The single chain was an improvement they made on these motors compared to the double chain.Double chain was so noisy!!! I wish I knew about this upgrade u could do, because my double chain gave me so many problems.Also had to find out the hard way from reading an article from HotRod magazine giving false info on these Quad 4 and TwinCam engines.
Noisy and heavy. They're complete overkill. It's said the later chains aren't as strong. The only ones I've seen with any appreciable wear had 168,000 miles on it. It was stretched as well. I'd swap it at 150k and never look back.
@@LD9user I have actually snapped a double chain.Damaged the oil pan ,the timing casing, the crank sprocket.Spent to much money on those quad 4 motors!
I love you’re videos on these quad 4 rebuilds! I’ve been having some serious trouble with timing chain backlash the last couple years with my race car and have had no luck fixing the problem. Can you please give me any advice to fix this? I’m at a loss
@@LD9user the second design like you show in the video. Under future investigation I realized I have the wrong timing chain and possibly the wrong cam sprockets. Rock auto has the correct ones for 92 grand am on the way so hopefully that fixes my problem!

Thank you for the comment.What type of tensioner are you running? There have been a few different designs.
