@@bonnie43uk yeah, I still watch Cliffe from time to time but those interactions we had, for me at least, were only for a season. But hey, everyone to their own I guess. You know Tom, since being away from Cliffe, I've looked into evolution a little more in depth (I'm talking humans evolving from monkeys just for clarification). It turns out all those ape/humans transitional skeletons such as Lucy, Piltdownman, Javaman just to name a few were a complete hoax. I really didn't know that. There is zero evidence of it. None. It's just a story. Made up to decive any poor soul willing to buy it.
Just discovered this particular version of WL. He was unquestionably one of the best guitarists that ever lived. This version is stunning, just extraordinarily brilliant, given Glens health at this time. Beyond perfection….Cheers Glen.
I am 61. When I first heard this song, I was 7. I had a 45 rpm single that my brother gave me, and listened on a Symphonic record player. I was 7 years old. I had a Sears junior size guitar. I could not stop listening to it and trying to play it. It took me years to learn to play. I now play guitar and bass and it is still one of favorite. Thank you Glenn Cambell.
I'm a Linesman, and love this song. Here's some revised lyrics for 2024: "When they call you out of hours, And they're paying double time, I'll go to the middle of nowhere, And get their power back online"
Simply awesome. Both, voice and guitar. They don't make 'em like that anymore. The first I heard of Glen Campbell was of him as a singer; later on I found out that he was a GREAT guitarist...
He was just a name on a compilation of Bob Dylan songs album - instrumentals (1965/6) when I first heard him in Singapore. He was ''Don't Think Twice It's Alright - 12 string guitar Glen Campbell.'' In retrospect it was probably something The Wrecking Crew had done.
I can imagine the hair is standing up on their arms, the energy is just so damned good. Sometimes, you know you're doing something that will be remembered.
I worked for the phone company most of my life. I know what it’s like to climb in the rain or snow. Always this song has held deeper meaning for me. One time in Edmonton just outside the city I was up a pole and belted in. There was a field of long wheat that was hypnotizing as the wind moved waves through it. A truck passed by down below and this song was playing. Meant to be I guess.
Possibly the greatest song written in the pop/country genre. Glen Campbell was an incredible guitar player and his voice was perfect on this song. I remember when this song first hit the airwaves and it blew my mind. Still has the power to move me all these many years later.
I’ve heard Glen perform this song hundreds if not a thousand times. I always liked the original guitar break solo he performed on record with his Fender VI bass. But when I heard his solo here I was dumbfounded at how wonderful it was, simply brilliant. What a talent!
This song, without any discussion or debate, was one ‘perfect storm’ of a pop song! From the lush orchestration, ethereal string arrangements and off-world lyrics it had it all!! Glen’s guitar interpretation here was the best he’s ever done. Sweet legacy, Glen!! RIP, mate! 🙏
Saw Glen on the Meet Glen Campbell Tour in Belfast 2008...I went last minute and ended up sitting front row center stage due to a cancellation. It was a privilege to watch a legend at work.
What this song does is let you remember happier times in life, friends long gone and the new being born maybe wipe away a tear or 2 this song is a masterpiece stands alone
God what a great performance especially under the circumstances. He still plays amazing guitar performance. He always seems to love to perform. Rip sir!
Fun fact: the Danelectro Longhorn bass wielded by Glen's bandmate to his left is the model Glen used for his tremolo-enhanced solo on the original 1968 single, which is now in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
@@garyhenson117 The amazing thing is that we're all here from different countries cultures, different class etc, to witness this performance. Just admiration, love and a touch of profound sadness that he is gone. Cheers then. 🥂🇬🇧
Most publications say he used a Fender VI bass, but the direct sources do say it was a Danelectro… but it was a 6 string bass (not the 4 shown here). He used Carol Kaye’s Danelectro 6 Bass… both Glen and Carol do confirm this. I think most publication say it was the Fender VI bass, because that’s what he used when performing. The Fender was much more versatile than the Dan.
@@MoGumboFukUTubeForChngngMyName Thanks for the correction! Man alive. This was in the deep throes of his Alzheimer's disease. He stands on a rug that is familiar to him, and has a screen prompt. He repeated the same vocal on the second and third chorus, and it was clear that Glen was suffering on the odd occasion. Those moments made this performance all the more incredible. As always, his guitar solos are impeccable, despite the horrors of his infliction. I doubt that there has been a single individual more talented as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, actor and entertainer than Glen Campbell within the last 100 years.
@@djavidianmx1832 It was before his illness was made public knowledge. Always brilliant, always under appreciated, Glen was an American icon and a true gift to music. And by the way, this is from a guy whose favorite band is Cannibal Corpse!
There's a great full show here..th-cam.com/video/9FPI6dKOBnY/w-d-xo.html
I'm a metal fan and went to see him in 08 on that tour....the guitarist on the left is Todd Youth Schofield RIP a real hardcore punk guitarist, Chris Chaney is on bass on the gig I linked....he was the musicians musician.
Hiya Bob. Nice reflection on this clip. Never seen it before, but certainly a fine tribute to a artist who I'm not familiar with. Never realised he was a lead guitar player. And the shapes he used on the fretboard are testimony to that. Keep safe. 🎸🤠
Nice post❤
He could front any band. What a talent. RIP. Your memory will always live on.
😢😢🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
One of the greatest guitarists and musicians that ever lived.
Caught it last night on Jools Holland Live. Made me quite emotional. What a great voice and musician.
I was so pleased when this was selected 😀
i have just been diagnosed with dementia and his music, because of me mum, has followed me on my journey through life. ❤️❤️❤️
❤

I actually got goosebumps watching and listening to this.. what an amazing performer. Sadly missed, thanks Jools.. your show is inspirational.
Me too!! I was washing up and this was on in the background. It stopped me in my tracks and just gripped me. Incredible performance. The guitar solo and the amazing vocals at the end were just superb. Considering this legend of a man was knocking 80 it just proves what a talent he had.
@@storageofmylife1644 yes, I loved that guitar solo aswell, he added a little bit of his own freestyling.. clearly he was loving it... fantastic round of applause at the end.
@@bonnie43uk Tom, Glen was a messianic Jew. Bet you didn't know that. As a believer, I'm gonna get to spend eternity with Jesus and Glen. Can you imagine that. I'm going to get Glen to teach me all those cool rifs. The opportunity is open to you too Tom...you know what you need to do.
@@isanna6075 Hey, Isanna, how cool to meet you on here. Long time no hear. Hope you're doing ok, .. no, i wasn't aware of Glen's beliefs, he's free to believe anything he wishes, just as you are Isanna, if you want to believe that Glen is going to teach you all those cool guitar riffs, that's absolutely fine with me. Do you still watch Ask Cliffe videos?, I wondered where you went to?
@@bonnie43uk yeah, I still watch Cliffe from time to time but those interactions we had, for me at least, were only for a season. At the end of the day, we pick the team we want to play for and accept the consequences. How you've argued on there for 10 plus years back and forth is beyond me.
And, the men funding the digs weren't the best of characters either,. just God hating men desperate to prove He doesn't exist. Fascinating. If only the atheist, people like yourself, would follow the evidence, you would have to conclude at the very least, that this monkey to human theory is a lie. A total con job to be more precise. There is zero evidence of it. None. It's just a story. Made up to decive any poor soul willing to buy it.
God blessed this man with talent, uncompromised talent!
His beautiful voice and guitar virtuosity continues to shine. R.I.P. maestro. ✌️💕
That key change at 2.40 is so beautiful
Glen on guitar...one of the best!
Kept the show going as long as he could. Fan for life
Waves hello from February 2023. Still brings a tear. Thank you, Mr. Campbell. Rest in Power.
Just discovered this particular version of WL. He was unquestionably one of the best guitarists that ever lived. This version is stunning, just extraordinarily brilliant, given Glens health at this time.
Beyond perfection….Cheers Glen.
Its great there is a modern performance in colour of this, from 1968
@@williamnunn8847 what's the link?
check out the version with him and the Stone Temple Pilots. th-cam.com/video/HDPuK_tqG-Y/w-d-xo.html
What a fantastic song. It always "takes me there". And makes me miss my dad who was a lineman.
Guitar playing is simply sublime....at one with the guitar!
Hi Jackie
What a sweet story! 🥰
Absolute mastery of the instrument. I could watch that little chromatic run towards the end of the solo on a loop for the rest of my life
Yep. Still coming back to watch it.
I'm a Linesman, and love this song.
Here's some revised lyrics for 2024:
"When they call you out of hours,
And they're paying double time,
I'll go to the middle of nowhere,
And get their power back online"
Strange how a song can make your eyes well , and you don’t know why , such a beautiful beautiful song ❤
Yes, why does this song destroy me (in a beautiful and powerful way)?
The short guitar run during the solo at 2:21 is so cool.
The power of his voice goes straight to the heart. It's delightful to witness such talent.
I was 9 when this was playing on a cassette tape in our car to france 1969
My teenage sons love this song in 2023. They have great musical appreciation.
This song gets in my head and I can't get it out.
Still gives chills up my spine. What a beautiful song ! One of his best !! How lucky we are to have such good music.
One of the best songs ever written. Reminds me of my childhood in the late 1960s in England.
This reminds me of my childhood in California, this song spoke to my soul even as a 10 year old...
“And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time” this has to be the finest lyric every written, gets me every single time 😢❤
Glen Campbell played good music, it didn't matter, one of the best musicians and guitar players that there ever was.
He was one of the greatest as far as music, vocals, and guitar playing. They'll never be another Glen Campbell.
Keep coming back to this... gotta be the most perfect performance of this song out there.
Agree 100%
Me too, I love this rendition, what a singer and what a guitar player…RIP Glen you made this singer your own …
I liked this man, his character, his voice and his fantastic guitar playing
I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time. My favourite ever lyric
That’s maybe one of the best versions, of that song. Brilliant.
It doesn't get any better than this. What a great talent, and a gentleman, too.
Even at that age performing came effortlessly to Glen - wow , just wow .
Every one of his band mates are grinning from ear to ear. Awesome
He is singing this as an older man here (obviously) - but his singing is stunning, then there is his guitar playing. Great artist.
Timeless song and Glenn…and what a superb guitar lead. Cheers.
Possibly the greatest song written in the pop/country genre. Glen Campbell was an incredible guitar player and his voice was perfect on this song. I remember when this song first hit the airwaves and it blew my mind. Still has the power to move me all these many years later.
That was unbelievable, can’t believe I’ve missed this performance
I’ve heard Glen perform this song hundreds if not a thousand times. I always liked the original guitar break solo he performed on record with his Fender VI bass. But when I heard his solo here I was dumbfounded at how wonderful it was, simply brilliant. What a talent!
One of the greatest country songs ever made. There is a incredible sense of realism sang from a soul experiencing the human condition.
This song, without any discussion or debate, was one ‘perfect storm’ of a pop song! From the lush orchestration, ethereal string arrangements and off-world lyrics it had it all!! Glen’s guitar interpretation here was the best he’s ever done. Sweet legacy, Glen!! RIP, mate! 🙏
what a joy that we had such a beautiful man to entertain us ,and ashley his daughter is gifted with his musical genius
That guitar solo was just incredible!!!
How many times have I watched this video in the past few weeks
It's amazing, literally. The solo, his voice, the composition
Saw Glen on the Meet Glen Campbell
Tour in Belfast 2008...I went last minute and ended up sitting front row center stage due to a cancellation. It was a privilege to watch a legend at work.
What this song does is let you remember happier times in life, friends long gone and the new being born maybe wipe away a tear or 2 this song is a masterpiece stands alone
Thank you BBC for posting this Glen Campbell masterpiece ❤️
God what a great performance especially under the circumstances. He still plays amazing guitar performance. He always seems to love to perform. Rip sir!
Fun fact: the Danelectro Longhorn bass wielded by Glen's bandmate to his left is the model Glen used for his tremolo-enhanced solo on the original 1968 single, which is now in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
That's his son playing bass. Most of the band in this era was his kids.
@@brettanderson7832 'Fun fact' squared - thanks! 👍
@@garyhenson117 The amazing thing is that we're all here from different countries cultures, different class etc, to witness this performance. Look at the date the video was put up and people are commenting now. I love that you can scroll the comments on any of Glen's tunes and there is no negativity.
Yeah, I've seen TH-camrs et al conflate the Danelectro Longhorn 6-string Bass that Glen played on the original studio recording of his "Wichita Lineman" solo with the Fender Bass VI that he used for TV performances. [Second reply, as my first one didn't 'post' ...]
Glen Campbell old magic fingers that string work is unreal voice strong skill strong
Before he was a solo artist he played as a session guitarist. So clear when he solos. Awesome.
He was one of The Wrecking Crew.
@@craigphillips6308 Couldn't read a note of music and yet was probably one of the best guitarists that has ever lived.
This was actually a couple years before his alzheimers
@@djavidianmx1832 It was before his illness was made public knowledge. Look at his moments of confusion, his reaction at the start of the song to seeing his family in the upper seats to his left, and his regular glances at the teleprompter. Then, tell us all if you ever saw this genius perform a single live song in such a manner. Further, research and speak to the families of Alzheimer's sufferers. We know it when we see it.
Outstanding! What an an awesome talent he was.
"And I need you more than want you and I want you for all time"
That line has got to be one of the most emotionally powerful lines ever written!🔥
At his age, he totally nails this. An underrated guitarist but a well known vocalist. Legendary indeed.
I’m mesmerised by his skill on the guitar. Incredible.
Goosebumps every damned time!
Glen Campbell 🙏🏻 an absolute entertainer. Brilliant musician, singer 🙏🏻 God love him 🙏🏻
