I’m 70 now. This song takes me right back to the year it was released. Rented an apartment in a beautiful old house and filled it up with this and other songs from the era. Had a good friend named Tom who I loved dearly. I remember sitting on the wooden floor with him, listening to this song over and over, talking about everything in the world, and making plans for our future. Our plans never panned out but the memories stay strong and this song is the soundscape for them. Preserve your memories, they’re all that’s left you.

I was 18 in 1986 and i can’t describe my feelings when i realise how fast time goes by. Thats just the way it is …
I’m born in 68 too - i don’t feel like I’m in mid 50s but numbers don’t lie
Ditto, where did the time go?
I’m only 31 but feel the same, like early 2010s, 90s feel like lifetimes ago
YOU'RE NOT ALONE. I too am living the same.. But hey, we truly are Blessed beings.. having been there back then. Stay Healthy and Well.
Same here, and 56 now. Although '86 wasn't the best year ever for music, it had some very significant personal milestones
When I was out to lunch with a girl I really liked and scrolling through the car radio for music. I knew we had some different tastes but then i heard the intro to this and stopped. She said she loved this song and I said I did too. We sang it out loud together and held hands smiling. I bought her an autographed piece of sheet music of this song for Christmas and 13 years later it hangs in our bedroom. We still hold hands and sing it whenever we hear it. Its a very special song for us.
God bless you both and every moment you have together. ❤
Nice!
Beautiful story , some songs have so much meaning in your life ❤

beautiful, thank you for sharing
God, the '80s had some of the most amazing talent, ever.
That's just the way it is a classic❤
Your first word is the key one.
In particular, we are talking about God the Holy Spirit, who is ACTIVE in offering signs through Scripture, nature, culture ... and (maybe soon enough) Rapture.
Even in the 80s, He might be more active in British music than American - though the above is a wondrous exception.
Already the corporate control was getting strong in the sad context of 1 John 5:19.
Now music is so much in the hands of the darkness (as we can discern quite clearly), that is much harder for the Holy Spirit to find ways in.
That is the truth.
He is the Spirit of love and truth, but also meaning.
So we mostly keep going back to older pieces of music.
[Elbow's "One Day Like this" came out in 2008]
["If this is it" - Netwon Faulkner, 2009]
[Frank Turner "the way I tend to be" - 2013, so even that is 11 years ago, and that's Indie music]
th-cam.com/video/R_xmJcg1iBU/w-d-xo.html is in the special pandemic circumstances of 2020, though the song (with very religious origins) goes back to '97 - Katrina.

How can Bruce Hornsby not be in the rock and roll hall of fame???? We need to start a grassroots campaign for this!!!

He's a treasure to the world. It's a testament to his incredible talent that his piano playing is so unique and recognizable.

Am I in heaven ? This is one of the best live performances you'll ever hear.
I would agree wit you.
100%.
Went to a concert in the late 1980's in Manchester. Didn't know who the supporting act to Huey Lewis & the News was. A guy slowly walked onto the stage, sat at the piano and began to play....this!! The audience were in stunned disbelief, as the rest of the band 'The Range' joined him on stage...what a performance and one of the best concerts I've ever attended. What an unforgettable evening, thankyou Bruce & Huey.
I was there too! A great gig.
I saw Huey Lewis and the news in the 80's at Birmingham NEC. It will always be held as the loudest gig we've ever been to!
Saw the Hammersmith Odeon show in this tour. Superb.
I was in Stuttgart at the time in 1986 I heard this song on the radio and had to find out more about Bruce. Turns out he was touring that same tour with Huey and we drove up to Frankfurt about a week later to see him/them. Still one of the most memorable concerts I have been to.
I went to the Hammersmith Odeon show way back then, simply the best live piano I've ever seen. Great songs aswell, who can't forget Mandolin Rain
Beautiful work from 1986 thru today-
I was born in 1988, this song came out in 1986. I'm going to see Bruce Hornsby tomorrow in concert, April 4th 2024. What a classic and great artist to stand the test of time.
you must have been in Carmel. Us too ! Fun show and amazing talent on stage
Just saw him in Santa Rosa last night, fantastic as the first time I saw him at Yoshi's back in the 90's I believe.
Seeing him tonight in London, can’t wait.
I was born in 1988-04-06 and I am happy for you that you witnessed Mr Bruce much love and God bless you.
I bought the LP because I immediately fell in love with the way Bruce plays the Piano. This song is still awesome in 2024.
But, genius that he is, it is never surpassed by "The way it is"...
The love and truth in the song was from the Holy Spirit (as all love and truth is), but somehow passed Him on through the song.
As ever was.
Song even defies happy-sad classification as it so far transcends such basis stuff...
Yes, This was one of the first CDs I ever bought in 1986!
Indeed!
Inolvidable!
The LP omg I long for those days to came back.
The saddest thing is, that this song is still necessary in 2024.
The song says it, "Some things will NEVER change". Painful truth. Sadness!!!!!
And for some of us from Africa, it has become a DOUBLE EDGED SWORD. So we run to the diaspora where conditions in a deceptive kind of way, cut the same.
Now our children grow in lands far from their own true culture, their identity. Totally detached from the motherland.
One would say, "Go Back HOME". Like I said before, the double edged sword waits to cut you.
This is "The way it is for some of us"

Hearing this song ALWAYS takes me back 1986...to being a 12 year old...riding with my Grandpa in his 1983 Toyota pickup. We'd hear this song on his truck's lousy 2-speaker radio and I'd ask him to HUSH, so I could hear the entire song! When he passed away in 2016, I went with others to pack up his house. Surreal. As I left his house for the very last time, I got in my car and immediately played this song as I drove away, crying and filled with memories of Grandpa and youthful days that won't ever be again..
Truly beautiful, this life… ❤

Linda história me emocionou aqui
I had the honor to meet Bruce after a big win by LSU basketball where his son Keith played. I got a pic with him and told him this song inspired me to buy a piano and learn to play. He gave me his email and said he would autograph the sheet music to this song and mail it back to me - which he did. I can’t say enough about how gracious he was with us fans.
I always enjoyed this song and especially the message. The meaning has become so much more over the years. I was 24 when this song first came out. I am now 62 and life has greatly changed for me after I lost my dear Rosita 3 1/2 years ago to cancer and I am the primary care giver for my 93 year old mother-in-law. Life takes on so many changes.
I was 24 too when this song was released....and now I'm almost retired and a grandparent.
I just turned 40 this week. Your comment made me think about my wife, my mom, my mother in law, life and how things tend to seem mundane and unchanging until you look back on your life and realize nothing ever stays the same. For whatever it's worth, just know this young man in Denver Colorado respects you and is greatly encouraged by your love and committed to your family. God bless you and I wish grace and peace you
This is so beautiful, what a fantastic performance by an amazing artist. 👏
God bless you.
Hanging in there! Believe in the power of prayer! I was a care giver for my mother during the Pandemic! We became great friends!
I'm in my early fifties, and I have come to the sudden realisation that most of the artists I listened to as a teen are probably in their late 60s or older. Such a plethora is musical geniuses getting older and aging like fine wine. Brilliant rendition of a great song and composition of the orchestra.
You are definitely right!
Bruce Hornsby is a bucket list concert....hoping to make it happen!

Adolph well said . I could not have said it any better.
I watch videos of my favorite stars in the 80s and I view them doing their work now and I am blown away.

I'm about the same age, incredible song. I just played an earlier version when he was younger looking and came across this edition, how fast time flies.
One of THE best songs ever produced. No argument needs to be made. Time proved it a long time ago.
Bruce still has it! Aged like fine wine. Keep playing Bruce, your music will live in our hearts forever. My favorite song, mandolin rain.
And gonna be some changes made…the Home Depot commercial song
If you watch the music video for Mandolin Rain, there's a guy playing bongos. There are no bongos used in that song but it's Bruce's brother playing as a little joke.
Imagine being a member of the BBC Concert Orchestra and getting to accompany such great legends
"Good day at work babe?,.. yeah was alright, was playing with Bruce Hornsby today, usual stuff..how was your day?.."

I always think like this too... It's the same when Ricky Gervais worked with David Bowie ... who is his idol and the fact Ricky wrote a song for Bowie to piss take on 😂
Absolutely brilliant!! as a boy back in 86 i used to play air piano to Mum & Dad to this and have loved his music it every since. Was sat in a hospital car park today waiting for my father-in-law and had tears rolling down my cheeks thinking of those days. Love what music can do....🥺👌👌👌

Muito bom, abertura da minha rádio pirata em 1988
1986. I was just 20 but quickly fell in love with Bruce’s magical voice and piano excellence. It made the 80s a great time to be alive in America.
I was 20, then, too!
before china took control of usa universities, - hear you guys im not american, but really love the america of 1980s
Nothing compares to 80's music. No music today even comes close.
Nothing compares to Holy-Spirit-inspired music.
Love and truth, meaning and inspiration.
He does that - willingly working with human genius, to achieve signs through culture.
Seriously? As a 75 year old geezer, you’re entitled to your opinion….but if we agreed with you, we’d all be wrong ……
well...., the 90's was the TRUE golden age of American pop....., but the 80's was just behind it....,
Gosh, I can’t think of anything well written in the past 5 years,
@@waffles1ca The beloved Holy Spirit is enigmatic, but of course would never deceive. The movie "Don't look up" is pastiche for most of the way until its divinity becomes clear at the near-final "dining table scene" (which also includes Di Caprio's beautiful ad-lib). There is quite a bit of great music associated with the movie, but stunningly great is "Second Nature", which we can immediately see as a clever title, of at least three meanings. The song matches, with many lyrics likewise being parable-like in having 3 meanings simultaneously. Quite a bit is deeply religious in the second layer, and the song is achingly and entrancingly beautiful, as befits the movie. It is sung by Bon Iver (which from French connects with the greeting/blessing "Good Winter" aa used by people in the series "Northern Exposure"). In my view the wondrous "Second Narure" is the greatest song of recent years, and the Holy Spirit's raising of it into transcendence is seen clearly enough. The writer/singer admits to being "inspired" and concedes that it "came easily'. I know that feeling ... I am having it now, as I do whenever I post in reference, directly or indirectly, to Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Probably it is clear to you (as Eurovision a few days ago made clear) that, while the Holy Spirit can inject His love and truth into a song, so the darkness can inject his deception, distraction and destruction ... and that in the 2020s is a more overt process than it has ever been. Of course, "Don't look up" IS a work of End-Times type content, while "Second Nature" features the word "Rapture"...
I was a musician myself until I lost my hearing… can’t determine pitch… when I listen to this song… I can still hear heart and honesty!Thank you.

Bruce and I are both 69 only thing he looks old. I still look 39. ;) He can still sing pretty well.

The sound of the real America I fell in love with when me and my parents moved here from Colombia running away from the drug wars in Medellin. To me this song is the sound of hope, I can smell the maple trees in the Fall. This is my America the beautiful. So when they tell me “ its the way it is”, I don't believe them, I believe Bruce, a real gentleman, a real American, a real brother.
A good tune stands the test of time!!!
A few years ago my wife and I went to see Bruce at the Broad theater on the Santa Monica City College campus for his Solo tour. My wife was a huge fan; I only marginally knew his work.
I was blown completely away. Bruce is an astounding pianist. His left/right hand independence is unmatched. It’s mind bending.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I clicked and turned it up. Two notes in my wife from the next room over announced “It’s Bruce!”
He was in a pressure situation but played without a hint of it on his face.
“It’s Bruce” in a larger sense, usually refers to Springsteen. But your wife’s more local interpretation is understandable.
I used to lay in bed at night and play this cassette. I was about 13 when this was released, so many memories when I hear those opening chords. Reminds me of loved ones and old friend’s long gone. This song still resonates today! Signed a fellow Virginian!
Sorry, "cuts".
What an absolute treasure. Thank You Bruce Hornsby and BBC.

The Legendary Bruce Hornsby...love this classical version.
Massively underrated genius songwriter & musician ❤😊
Bruce Hornsby's first two albums are perfect for driving through the countryside on a crisp autumn day, with the hillsides covered in red, yellow and green, and the eagerness of youth calling you on. I did that many times in the 80s. Can't believe it's been so long.
Every so often a song comes out that will last for decades this is one of them
Forever, in fact
All my hero's from the 80s are getting old Bruce Hornsby,Mark Knopfler, Ann Wilson.... but the truth be told so am I. Life is short it flys by very quickly enjoy it. Great music never ages though.
This took my breath away. Bruce’s piano solo and the gorgeous accompaniment of the BBC Concert Orchestra. Pure magic.
Met Bruce several times…we live in the same town. As talented as he is…he is more so humble. Love his music! Makes me smile and watch in awe as his fingers dance gracefully across the keys. Thanks for the previous memories and the new ones. Cheers!
I am sober and yet as high as a kite after listening to this.
Stunning.
Bruce! Absolutely stunning. No idea why...sat here listening to this...and i have tears in my eyes. Beautiful track, beautifully played... thank you.
Me too…
This was the first track I ever learnt on the piano, I'm 35 now but this song was an extremely important part of my youth. Cheers Bruce, you've given soul and life to the moments that matter.
Piano begins, orchestra follows and magic begins. This video is not just a wonderful piece of art but a beautiful nostalgiac journey. Hats off to you master Hornsby, together with your Orchestra brings me true joy. Amazing
1986, I was 16 attending high school in Edmonton, Alberta from HK. This was the song played almost every morning on the radio. I remember those days with those iconic John Huges movies like Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, etc., and especially Ferris Bueller’s Day Off which still cracks me up every time without failing. Hornsby’s distinctive piano intro just cuts through everything like no other. When the music came on through the radio, it could almost capture your attention no matter how many times you’ve already listened to this tune. The good old days!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.
26 in '86 - What a brilliant version ... Yes I was a fan ... This song was one of those you don't or can't forget.
Incredibly sensitive pianist. Fantastic orchestral arrangement.
Beautiful version by one of the most talented musicians in the world. Bruce is just so cool and I wish he would get the true recognition he deserves as one of the very best to ever touch a piano.
I couldn't agree more with you. 👏
Are you serious? Even in this he plays out of Tune. It’s a super great song. But seriously his vocal is weak. And like I said he played many notes wrong. One of the best who ever touched a piano. What are you tone def?at 3,42min I count 3 notes in a row that’s out of tune.😂 freaking hilarious
@@HowIsThat69 go somewhere else will you
@HowIsThat69 You sound like nothing more than a troll doing what they do best: stir up trouble. If you're going to criticize Bruce Hornsby, it is you who's tone deaf. This was simply a revision of the original version to play with the orchestra. When the hell was he flat? Did it occur to you he may have just been nervous playing in that environment? 🙄 God, how judgemental can one be?
Not one note out of tune dude. Get your ears checked. And at nearly 70, his voice is just wonderful@@HowIsThat69
What a beautiful arrangement of this classic and meaningful song.

My Dad loved this song and would ask me to make compilation tapes and this song was every one on both sides along with Jessica by the Allman Brothers. He loved Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, any boogie-woogie styled piano. He locked into virtuoso pianists. This song always moved me, this version gave me the gift of tears. Thank You Mr. Hornsby on behalf of my Father who loved you. What isn't to love?
I love that you capitalized *Father*
Absolute masterpiece. Well done Bruce your a good man. ❤
This takes me back to when I was a kid and my mother was alive in the 80's. We used to listen to this. Amazing memories, outstanding acoustics, and I loved the orchestra as well in the performance. Thank you, Mom and Mr. Hornsby. ❤️☺️🙏🏼
Dudes voice is still clear and good sounding at 70.. 🥰🥰

He plays like he's the only one in the room, just riffing and casually moving around the piano yet bringing out the most beautiful music. It's incredible to watch
Was 20 and working at a Florsheim Shoes when this came out. Hard to believe it was that long ago. Seems like another lifetime. This was the music and era that was a big part of my life. If I could go back….
Love this song. How he has aged but a timeless song
Song that was playing in University refectory when I met my first and only true love. ❤️ Sadly I bollocksed that up. Never forget her to this day 37 years later.
Sad thing is I never told her how much I loved and miss her 😢
Oh how a song can transport you back to when you heard it. As we age the classics are never forgotten. Wonderful display of a very nimble and beautiful dance across the piano keys. Such talent and good memories.
Sound that lets me travel through my memories.
Bruce was incredible at Southbank Centre this past week. I lived 25 miles away from him for the past 18 years and never had the time to see him perform. I'm the idiot. But happy to have moved to London and fortunate-enough to have heard him play - just seven row away too. Teary-eyed and happy.
Bruce has come a long way from when I saw him play at the Jolly Ox in Hampton Virginia in 1978. The first time I heard him I thought if this guy doesn't make it big there is something seriously wrong with the music business. I got to see him and the Range in Germany in 1986 as the opening act for Huey Lewis and I got a note to him back stage before the show and he remembered me so I got to go back stage. He is truly a gifted musician fluent in many styles. And as near as I can tell he did it his way playing music he wanted to play and not just selling out for the money. He is an American musical treasure.
Magnificent. This album was my first CD when that technology was brand new. I played it over and over, amazed at the way his piano filled the track. This is such a wonderful version.
I remember his beginnings well in the late 70's. Boot Hill Express. Local favorite at Horne's in Hampton, VA.
The piano sounds fabulous. And of course, there is this magnificent musician making it happen. Thank-you for starting my day so peacefully, Bruce and BBC.

Amazing how one single mans thoughts put into words and music can influence and have such a profound effect on peoples lives for years to come. Powerful stuff...
Just sending a what IF moment here. What if God sent his angels to sing and mark your way through out each phase of life if that is what you prayed for? What if when you look back upon each song from how ever long you have been given here upon this land could you not thank The God of this world for walking you through it with his Son??? YOU would consider this moment in the moment and mark it for the precise timing it had and how beautifully God has timed it all!!! 🤗🙏🌻
Hard to grasp fully (and why wouldn't it be?)
But if you are saying this song has divine inspiration, well you are right!
Holy Spirit does this kind of thing ... everything He touches even in this 1 John 5:19 world is this beautiful!
