FUJI VELVIA 100: No Kodachrome, No Problem! (Film Review)

  • In this video I review the film Fuji Velvia 100, using many samples. Many including I, love Kodachrome. But Velvia is still on the market, and can be a choice of positive film other than Kodachrome or Ektachrome. We walk the streets of Asakusa, Tokyo, and take photos.
    I use my Leica M6 with a 35mm Zeiss Biogon in this video.

    I am no where near ready to review film so I am *that* much more excited to hear someone like you speak on it! LOOOVE Velvia! It cracks the top five for me and brings this joyful punch to images. Side note: I'll be testing your go-to Ultramax next month (almost a year after you told me to lol).
    Edit: *Laughs in Japanese* DFKM BRO! HAHAHA!

      definitely has a punch doesn't it? it sometimes has that mojo that other films don't have.
      Ultramax was a budget choice for me tbh... but try it out! It's pretty decent.

    Love the review Ulysses. I am still a beginner and still seeing what film stocks I like using. So far I'm happy with Kodak ultramax 400, but Velvia is definitely on my list to try and experiment. Your shooting style is really so stealthy, the quick shots of moving subjects amazes me. Thanks for this review! Looking forward to your next videos.

    Never clicked faster, I always enjoyed Velvia and was pleasantly surprised at its color and looks. I was shooting a roll after taking photos of cherry blossoms in Shinjuku Gyoen, and to finish up the day I had two shots left and bam got some street photos at Shinjuku that blew me away. I can't wait to use it again and nervous at the same time. I also enjoy using Provia as well but there was something about Velvia that Im tempted to use again and just haven't yet, but now Im definitely going to. awesome vid :) I hope I can bump into you one day in Tokyo!

    Would be happy to see more film videos in the future! It looks like someone also pointed out how it's not obvious when the photo's at the end were taken. I really like that feeling of ambiguity especially since color film does evoke a nostalgic quality at least for me.

    Don't be so hard on yourself and feeling like you need to prove anything to the audience, I'm sure most of us that follow you understand that you're a great photographer.
    The images actually remind me of the Ricoh GR positive film presets a lot! Great look and never would've thought to use Velvia in these situations but definitely gonna try it now

      I also just wanted to show the fuller potential of velvia.
      Interesting point with the GR positive film. Perhaps they've taken some traits off of Velvia... 🤔🤔🤔
      I can see how the reds are similar (saturated, but a bit blotchy)

    Awesome video again. Looked like a lot of work! That cinematic EOS R man... Can I call you Ulysses Bloom? haha. It's funny how your Velvia shots come off very magenta because your color grading of your video footage has more green in it :D But the more I look at your velvia shots, the more I like them. Never tried 35mm positive film. Hate that it is so expensive though. You should name that technique at 04:06 before someone else does it haha.

    Very interesting review on Velvia. I’m currently working on my review of Ektar 100. A film I’ve gravitated to, specifically because of my inability to shoot Velvia in a manner I like/expected... like Ken Rockwell’s and other shooters super saturated of Velvia 50. Not sure if that’s ever been the purpose of Velvia 100 or not...

  • @TucsonAnalogWorkshop
    @TucsonAnalogWorkshop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I feel like the mistake a lot of people make with regard to slide film (and Velvia in particular) is to judge it based on the workflow of negative film. Slide film is designed for direct viewing and anything beyond that, such as printing or scanning, requires a lot of acrobatics to reproduce the amazing qualities of the pure projected image. Also, people seem to have the idea that since it is a positive, it will be easier to scan. Actually it's the opposite

    I was never a big fan of Velvia when I was shooting film. Just too punchy. I worked as a director of photography when it was introduced in 1990 and suddenly lots of shooters were using Velvia (Fujifilm did an amazing marketing campaign for the film). Like all positive films exposure is crucial so the skilled photographers knew how to expose and those new to the game usually got very lackluster results from Velvia. When I quit my magazine job and went full-time as a photographer I would shoot 4x5 or RZ. Both for studio and travel jobs. I used the Fuji NPS 160 which I felt was a dreamy film. Like the strange twin to Kodak Portra 160. Thanks for your opinions on Velvia. And your images at the end do justice to Velvia. You can see how the Fuji films love the red spectrum in your shots.

    Pretty interesting video👍! The pics you‘ve shown at the end of the video look as they‘ve been taken sometimes between the 1950s and the 80s🤓. Velvia is not exactly my film, but I can understand that it appeals to some photographers. Recently I purchased two rolls of Cinestill50D. One has to be careful not to underexpose the film, but correctly exposed (or even slightly) overexposed it looks gorgeous😎👍. Anyway, thanks, Ulysses - nice Video. Ah, and by the way, I really like the Asakusa area in Tokyo. Especially the area between Sensoji and Ueno station is pretty amazing (Kappabashi etc.). I really miss walking these streets!

    I began to transition from Kodachrome to Fuji in the late 80s, largely due to the increasingly slow processing times and the scaling back of labs that offered K-14 (Kodachrome) processing. While I was shooting Ektachrome and other E6 slides including Fujichrome 100D but the Velvia 50, well, that blew me away and I was pretty much the Fujifilm that converted me at that point. I now shoot with 3 Fujifilm cameras and while I largely shoot RAW, if I am editing a land/city/seascape image as well as editorial, I will likely process those images in Velvia or Provia.

    I am into, what they call here in Italy, "suggestivo" and as the name implies suggestive. Luigi Ghirri, lowers color saturation to a point that gives the image a retro, or faded-looking appearance. The moodiness I am attracted to is consistent with what color film means to me. While I'm shooting digital, my "vibrance" setting in LR is toned down so I can get those same tones. Tokyo is a wonderful place to try this out.

    I think not a lot of people use Velvia (or slide film in general) because of the combo of the cost (slide film is typically $5-$10 more per roll than c41, in the US at least ), the lack of exposure latitude, it's more expensive to develop, and it's also harder to scan. I've shot a couple rolls of the new Ektachrome recently and the results are really nice, but not worth the extra expense for me personally.

      @@nicolz72honestly, I don't take care of timing. If I like the scene, I take the photo. Of course, with low light you need to take care about the exposure because with 50 ISO you need a tripod. The colors of Velvia 50 are rich, so sunrise and late afternoon look good.

    Hey, I loved the vid. Great to see you review film. But somehow it bugged me that you compared Velvia to Kodachrome. Velvia was intended for Landscape use and as such pretty much doesn't care about skin tones and is pretty saturated. For something like street photography, I think having nice skin tones and no too crazy saturated color is better suited, for example Fujichrome Provia 100f. Sure Kodachrome was similar, but then again it was its own beast. Nonetheless, if you can make it work, which in this case I would say you did, it really doesn't matter which film you choose.

    • @UlyssesAokiPhoto
      @UlyssesAokiPhoto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Wasn't an actual comparison. And the point was that if you shoot Velvia correctly, you don't always get crazy skin tones. I think the Bruno Barbey shots are pretty self-explanatory on this point. Obviously Kodachrome is more "ideal" though.
      I forgot to mention this, but Velvia wasn't intended to be "crazy". Fuji made it more saturated because the weather and colors in Japan are relatively muted. And the skintones are made to be more suited towards Japanese/Asian skin

      @@UlyssesAokiPhoto I love the playful mocking of some other videos that perhaps take themself too seriously :). Also great shots BTW. Especially love the few at the end. I've only ever shot Velvia in Dominican Republic (which worked amazing) but will shoot some street with the rolls I've been saving for beaches. Lol

    It feels like you have a different personality when speaking japanese :D. Maybe its because you talked to the cameraman :D.

      yeah probably because I'm talking to the guy filming, who's a good friend :)
      It's hard to bring that into just a camera staring at me lol

    I really mean it in a constructive way: Your shots do not show what a good lens and Velvia 100 can produce. Most of your shots are underexposed and blurry.

      I would say this: it was a very dark day in general. obviously for video I exposed it so that the scenes look brighter. the photos aren't blurry, some have motion in them, but most of them are pretty "sharp" unless you're watching the vid in low res.
      I would say though that the photos taken that day don't convey the potential of Velvia 100%. Some photos I showed in the beginning that weren't taken that day were probably a better showcase.
