Using a light meter and filters for slide film - Velvia 50 and Ektachrome

- Using a light meter and filters for slide film is a great way of ensuring you get the correct exposure without blowing out the brightest areas in your scene. In this video, I shoot Fuji Velvia 50 and Kodak Ektachrome E100 for landscape photography on a black sand beach on the west coast of New Zealand.
My camera of choice for this video is my Hasselblad 503CW, which is a medium format film camera, it has interchangeable film backs and it makes 6 x 6 square format images. I use my 50mm CFI and 150mm CFE lenses with my Sekonic 858D lightmeter.

Amazing shots, Stephen. I’ve historically only used Provia and in fact I just shot my first 120 roll of Ektachrome last week. But your results with Velvia are really selling it for me. Well done all around and I very much appreciate the technical side of your videos.

E100 and Velvia 50 are the 2 films that I use almost exclusively so I was curious to see what you got here. Your photos show the same thing I’ve observed with V50 is that it has a strong pink cast which gives strong warm colours but whites can sometimes look pinkish. When I want super beautiful whites E100 is beautiful and I add filters for warmth such as the 81A that I almost always use with E100 and occasionally an 81C and if I want that pinkish cast like Velvia then I use a KR3 filter. I really hope these 2 stocks are around for a long time as I love both of them.

Hey Stephen, really appreciate the time you put into the video and the nice thoughts about the image-making process. As I am also working full time and beeing a fulltime husband and father I know how hard it is to take the time that you need to get some videos done. Really nice that in the end you came up with some wonderfull images. I really liked the comparison between velvia and ektachrome. I defenitely need to shoot in this place in future . This area looked so beautiful and you really put one more topic on my bucket list.
Just one thing and I know what I am talking about. Its more like a style thing. Realted to 0:50seconds - 0:58 seconds: "Dont put to many stuff in the pockets of a slimfit jeans... ;D Dont take that to serious... ;D

I would love go see a compendium video on slide film - all the info in one place, like exposure latitude and characteristics, how they react to over and under exposure etc. Maybe some day you could share knowledge.
Great video as always :) Im going to buy the Sekonic 858, i need a spotmeter. I tried with with a Gossen Sixtomat 2 with mixed results and i would like to try my Velvia 100 but i have just not had the guts for it. Heres hoping the Sekonic will do it for me, just not a cheap one. Thanks for sharing, its your fault i have this problem now. in a good way of course ;)
It’s a great meter. Lol, once you start using slide film it’s hard to stop.

Thank you 🙏 I like love the 6x6 format, the extra 2 shots per roll, interchangeable backs and the ability to see the affect of my grad filters through the viewfinder. I prefer the weight and ergonomics of the Mamiya. I’m thinking of trying the Mamiya 6 out.

Awesome camera man. I had a good year with my Mamiya 7 and then swapped it for a Hasselblad. I miss the lightweight setup and I’m thinking of getting a Mamiya 6. I hope you are creating some great images with your 7.

Great video, shame about the shots that may have come out overexposed, were you able to rescue any? Also the music towards the end was quite loud compared to the narration which made it difficult to hear.

If are were you I would keep the Pentax 67 a great camera for all type of photography, and especially Landscape photography, and the Pentax 67 SMC lenses are just fantastic. For the price of a Hassy, check how many 67,film, and good inspirational books you can buy to get for the same results. At the end, as you might know the quality of a picture depends more on the person behind the camera, the quality of the light, and something called LUCK (being at the right place and a right time, with right weather 🤔🤔🤔). A camera never makes a picture. I know a great Japanese Landscape Photographer, living in the US,who owned a Hassy 500CE if I remember we'll,, but one of his best shot was made with a Canon FT 35mm camera and an Canon FD zoom lens, Not kidding. The choice of a camera, in my opinion, should be more how it can be handled, format, weight, simplicity of operation, availability of parts, cost of repair, etc..as film cameras are all very old, But at the end it is all a question of preference. Said that I wish you all the joy of shooting FILM...
@@roiloubia4483 Actually I now have both , I like my 67 for fast snappy fun shooting but for the kind of photography I do I find the 500 cm a much better machine for a great number of reasons to long to list
@@AustenGoldsmithPhotography Nice that you still managed to keep the 67. I personally own the earlier version, 6x7 with MLU, with another same body as a backup. I am preparing to go back to landscape photography after I stopped 11 years ago. I might have to search for a new good used carbon tripod, my old Gitzo too heavy for a 72 years old man. Why not just pop your filter off and measure through your NDs so you dont’ have to do the math- just shoot what it measures through the grads and ND

Your wide angle lens will need checking. Check on the Nisi website, they have a tool that will tell you. If not, email Nisi and ask them.

Hey Stephen, My family and I made a cruise trip to NZ in October 2019 and made a day trip to the same beach during our in Auckland stopover. I shot a number of scenes with Godzilla (RB67 Pro SD) using Velvia 100. Hell of a walk to car park though!
