  • Meet Kshama Sawant, the India born American who steered a historic and much debated legislation in Seattle that officially recognises caste in the anti-discrimination laws of the city. While many have hailed the move, the Hindu American Foundation has protested calling it a decision that amplifies stereotypes and Hinduphobia
Barkha Dutt speaks to the Councilwoman who is the architect of the new statute

What a courageous , clear headed and kind woman kshama sawant is. More power to her in bringing all the oppressors down. Democrats need to learn how it's done from her depth of knowledge of issues and successful templates, unless they want to keep losing over and over again.

Glad to see Burkha shut her down for equating the caste politics in India with the one she's trying to stir up in the US. Clearly, she has no real knowledge and experience of caste discrimination, other than hearsay.
Most people that move to another country shed their ancestral baggage, like it or not! It's unfortunate to see that she is one of the few that did not.

Kshama Sawant is highly respected by the left in America and to some people she is one of the few candidates who have followed their own message of progressive politics. Almost all progressives have sold out or compromised (depending on who you ask), including names such as AOC or Bernie Sanders. She has visibility nationally but her impact beyond the state level is negligible because she's from an independent socialist party and not particularly liked by either democrats or republicans. Don't expect her to become President and send the kohinoor back any time soon. If by some miracle she does become President, count on her to send the kohinoor back because she is that much of an idealist.
