Hasina Has Fled; Modi, India Will Be Unpopular With New Bangladesh Govt; Students the Kingmakers Now

  • Narendra Modi and India will be unpopular with the new Bangladeshi government; a new generation of students will be kingmakers: from Dhaka, Barrister Aneek Haque, to Karan Thapar for The Wire.
In an interview recorded literally as news was breaking that Sheikh Hasina has resigned, her government has fallen and that she has fled the country, one of Bangladesh’s recognized voices, Barrister Aneek Haque, has said that Narendra Modi and India will be unpopular with the new Bangladeshi government. He said the students who had risen like a powerful peoples movement against the Hasina regime view her as India’s puppet.
They have grave and deep reservations about the close affinity between the Modi government and Sheikh Hasina as well as about the Modi government’s treatment of its own 200 million Muslim citizens.
As jubilation and celebration broke out spontaneously on the streets of Dhaka and other cities of Bangladesh, Barrister Haque said he believes a two-stage process is likely in terms of government formation. First, there will be an interim government and he does not believe the student movement will seek to be a part of it. However, shortly thereafter there will be full free democratic elections and he does believe that the students who led this revolt will play a prominent part in that election as well as the new regime that comes to power thereafter. As he put it, they may not be kings but they will be the kingmakers.
This interview conveys a sense of the enormity and the excitement of what is happening in Bangladesh through the eyes of the one of the country’s most observant viewers. If you want to understand what has happened and how the people of Bangladesh feel, I strongly recommend you see this interview.

Bengalis have always been politically aware. Soon after independence of Pakistan, Bengalis understood that imposition of Urdu meant their slavery. They paid with their blood and lives for their freedom.
That precious freedom was hijacked by vested interests.
I hold pro people position on any and every issue. Never pro government. Because, the government is there to work for the people. Not the other way around.
I pray and hope our Bangladeshi brothers and sisters will deal with the present situation with maturity and wisdom.

That is the last vote of the people of Bangladesh. After coming to power, Awami League has used all state forces against the people like party forces. Later in the 2014, 2019 and 2024 elections, the people were not given the opportunity to vote and a mock election was held in which no opposition participated. Government of India has directly and indirectly helped in this election bypassing the people of Bangladesh. A Bangladeshi boy/girl who is 17 years old in 2007 is now 34 years old. But he/they did not get a chance to vote even once Especially the students/youth are very angry with Sheikh Hasina and Indian government for 17 years. India has repeatedly interfered in the internal affairs of Bangladesh. Which everyone in Bangladesh is witnessing. That is also the reason for anger towards Hasina. After Sri Lanka & Maldives this is the third India's neighbour country to have an existing govt toppled. So I absolutely won't rule out what China was upto.
Many of the SH's infra projects were pro India was not well received by China. China and US are the two countries that will go to any extent to have a fair share of their advantage. You surely would not be brave enough to cancel it out considering how IK was calling out external influence for his situation.

Karan, people of Bangladesh are really feed up with consecutive Indian governments behavior towards them. Modi took it to a whole different level. According to my Bangladeshi friends all high paying jobs in most companies especially government linked ones are occupied by Indian citizens, they also believed Hasina had complete support of Indian intelligence agencies in managing and running campaign of fear and oppression against Bangladeshis. Countless people have been missing and many feared dead, all done with on ground presence of Indian intelligence personnel. Bangladeshis do acknowledge and appreciate the support India gave them in 71 but what they don't appreciate is Indians taking all the credit for a hard fought independence. Indian politicians and establishment figures need to understand these feelings with only grow stronger with such behavior. If Hasina is given sanctuary in India this will further antagonise Bangladeshis. Also the passage of Indian transport through Bangladesh without any checks or control to eastern states is an issue that causes much anger.

In a lot of other Indian media outlets the tone is very condescending with most of the accusations made that Bangladesh is the next Pakistan, next Taliban, etc

I m a Bengali with roots in Bangladesh it was funny to listen few things from Mr. Lawyer. This people are such liars and rotten they tend to forget things done to them the very next day. India gave them independence forgot, millions of refugees entered India forgot, the security trainings, officers trainings and million other ways were India wastes its money for this liars forgot . This people remember about riots in India literally forgetting riots on its own country and pretending as if they are the epitomes of peace. Bro, he is talking about the current situation of Bangladeshi people and their frustration over Hasina’s excessive dependency over PM Modi’s decision on all the political issues of our country. Hasina has served India and in exchange it only benefited her to keep her thrown; our people didn’t receive any benefits tbh. And I hope you’ll search through authentic sources to find out how many Indians are employed in BD currently and how much remittance India receives from BD. With two thirds of the majority being represented by young people, they are absolutely frustrated to see themselves getting deprived in the job sector of the country, thanks to Hasina’s dictatorship; she stopped listening to her people and started bloodbath by killing atleast 100k people over the last 15 years. She was the reason for which BD has lost atleast 94billion usd during her regime as her own people embezzled money from the country. In the recent, Hasina has herself said by grinning that her peon has 400 crore taka and has fled the country in an interview. Do you think people will be happy with all of these going on? I hope you understand the people’s sentiment of BD. All in all, being a friendly country doesn’t necessarily mean that all benefits be only given to India continuously from BD when the country’s own people suffer for doing such activities. Nothing was 50-50 between the two countries, it was all India and Hasina, not India and BD. Thus, this reform was required and I believe this new BD shall have better relationship with India if your PM starts to understand our sentiments.
