  • Clip from 'Hell is for Heroes' 1962. I believe that Bobs dialogue was scripted by him or was scripted specifically for him in this role.

This segment of the movie always made my dad laugh. Dad was an ETO veteran who was involved in the Battle of the Bilge and crossing the bridge at Remagen.
It took Bob Newhart as PFC Driscoll to make dad laugh at what he had seen in Europe during WWII.
Job well done, PFC James Driscoll! You are relieved and stand easy!

Don Siegel must have seen Operation Petticoat. He knew there has to be some humor in war. One of my favorite bits from Bob. RIP.

This scene is the one part of the entire movie, 'Hell is for Heroes' (staring Steve Mcqueen) that contains humor- excellent humor! The Germans had a microphone hidden within earshot and they believed the Americans didn't know about this. The Americans did know about the mic, and they used this to their advantage. The Americans were outnumbered 10 to 1 and an invasion was imminent, so they created a ruse to make it seem as if there were a lot more American GI's than there really were. Bob Newhart didn't have anyone on the line but acted as if he did because they knew the Germans were listening. In the movie, this scene went on a bit longer and was even funnier.
Bob Newhart made this act famous in later years; talking to someone on the phone where you only hear his side of the conversation. It's a very good movie, by the way, and I think it's the only war movie Steve McQueen did. It's a black and white.

Look up "The War Lover" with McQueen and Robert Wagner as B-17 pilots. It's got some great B-17 footage.
