My wife and I had the chance to see him live about a decade ago ate Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ. Age had not dimmed his mastery of the long-form joke - the timing, the inflections, all were as impeccable as they were hysterical!
He was a master of the one-sided phone conversation. My favorite is the brand-new security guard working his first night in the Empire State Building the night King Kong climbed the building.
Had a record when I was very young, The Driving Instructor? ,I think. As a 10 year old I laughed out loud, and now 60+ years later still laughing at this sketch. Brilliant man.
Bob Newhart was a true original. These monologues where he is the 'straight man' and the clown is the unheard person (usually, but not always, on the other end of a phone) are his unique invention. And they are brilliant. 'Genius' is not a word to throw around, but I don't think it would be out of place talking about Bob Newhart.
My father was a driving instructor, and brought "The Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart" home because of the "Driving Instructor" routine. I was 11 years old at the time. I loved that album then, and 60+ years later I still love it, and all of Bob Newhart's routines. Others have said 'genius'. It is a big word, but I agree with them, Bob Newhart is a comedic genius.
Newhart's album The Button Down Mind Of Bob Newhart was the first comedy album to go to #1 on the pop charts. Also, it won best album at the 1961 Grammy Awards. And, it was the first and only time a comedian won best new artist. Bob put comedy on the map in the recording industry. Credit given where credit is due.
Everyone has a favorite line, but for me it has to be..' If that thing goes off it's me they're going to want to talk to'. Sheer brilliance.
Without Bob’s facial expressions, it’s not as funny.
Bob Newhart: one of the best comedy duos ever.
Clever story telling……no cussing, no accusing, no political BS…..just comic genius

Bob's delivery and timing is probably the best of any comedian, anywhere, ever.... timeless.
Tobacco is my favourite " You put a bunch of leaves in your mouth and what?.... You set fire to it??"
Bob Newhart----a classic and clean comedian. Something you don't see today.
An American Icon.....superb comedy with no swearing or derogatory remarks

This is another brilliant one, this bring backs memories listening to Bob in the 70’s on an LP 🤣
No one can replace Mr Newhart! I'm 70 and I've been listening to him most of my life!
Wonderful that, at 92, this genius is still with us....
The man made the funniest one-sided phone conversations of all time. LOVE his stuff.

"Ah, use a coin then, Willard." Heard it a million times and it still makes me smile.
