Bought the 16 Pro Max coming from an iphone 13 (regular one). First day I thought I would give it back because it felt huge. Second day I thought I give it a try. Third day I almost forgot about it starting to like it. 4th day I felt the screen and battery to be amazing. Now, 3 weeks later I can’t imagine going back to the smaller size. The Pro Max is just amazing. A pure joy to use every time I touch it.
I feel the same way. My 16 Pro Max brings me so much joy every time I pick it up (especially caseless). The regular Pro is a two handed device to me anyway, so might as well go for the Pro Max!
You’re both convincing me. I still don’t know what I’ll do next year, but I just read another book on the iPhone 16 Pro Max and it was great. Plus the battery life, you’re right. To me, it seems practically ridiculously good.
Yeah, for years, I try to talk my mom into getting the biggest iPhone possible and she would always say that they were too big and she just needed a little one. So on Christmas, I just went ahead and bought the biggest one possible and told her to try it out for a couple of weeks and if she didn’t like it, then we could trade it back in and get a small one. Not only that she want to keep it, she said she couldn’t believe she wanted that little one over the big one all these years.

I just returned the iPhone 16 Pro that I bought. With all the new buttons, there's no where you can put your fingers to hold the phone that won't cause a button to be pressed. I very happily went back to my iPhone 14 Pro Max and apologised to it. So from my perspective, you made the right decision with the max version.
@junyaiwase no, I can see it - although I’m clearly older. I’ve been having some trouble finding the Camera Control button when I mean to. Button placement is taking me a time.
I used my phone for so many things, both work and home related, that I always get the Max for the batter and extra screen size. I don't have huge hands, at least not for a guitarist, but have used large phones for so long perhaps I'm use to it now. I did upgrade from the 14 PM to a 16 PM recently and I love it, I didn't think it would be much of an upgrade but the batter life is definitely better and I love USB-C and the new video options. Very real review, thank you!
I went with a pop socket this year and no case. It’s a brilliant combination and will help with managing the larger size. Get a good pop socket tho, the magnetic type not sticky tape.
Oh? There's a magnetic version? One of the reasons I never even tried Pop Socket was that I didn't like the idea of sticking one on permanently. I'm still not sure about them, but you're making me reconsider.
13:27 boss man! I knew I loved you for some reason 😂 I’m not a writer but I really love your presentation style and look forward to your take on Apple products.
I am in a similar boat, but a few things that have helped me: 1.) Remembering that I had a larger phone before, and it eventually became "invisible" (stopped consciously noticing it) 2.) After getting used to it in the past, it made it hard to switch to the smaller phone, because the large screen was so nice for watching videos/web browsing 3.) The Arc Pulse case (makes it feel caseless, but gives it protection, and the corner bumpers rest in your palm and help with grip). Very unique. Some may find it ugly, but many swear by it after trying it. I was formerly caseless myself though, but it feels a bit risky given the size. I also tend to put my phone in my shirt pocket. 4.) Enabling the "reachability" setting in accessibility options within settings. This allows you to do a swipe down from the bottom of the screen to the bottom edge which brings down things at the top of the screen and lets you reach them making is usable with one hand in a pinch. 5.) Designing my layout with all my most used applications accessible from the side of the phone I typically pick it up with. I've resolved to stick with this one and stop worrying if I made the right choice, as if I still don't like it after a year, it'll have the highest trade-in value. But last night I noticed for the first time it disappeared as I was using it again. The newness sort of wore off and I could tell I was getting used to it.
I forgot about Reachability: thanks. I really did have to send the old phone back right after filming this, to get the trade in, but when I was reaching for the packaging, I actually picked up the wrong iPhone. It was only a moment’s mistake, but I was encouraged. I felt maybe it was becoming, as you say, invisible.

10:37 obviously YMMV, but I think the iPhones stopped being shirt-pocketable with the iPhone 6. Too large (not too large to fit, but too large to be comfortable), too heavy to put in a shirt pocket without a fitted vest or jacket of some sort to keep it from banging around or stretching out the shirt too much, and because of the rounded edges and material choices, too slippery to reliably get a solid grip when pulling out of a shirt pocket (because of the grip necessitated by a flat shirt pocket).
Good points. I always see the iPhone 6 as a low spot in the series, but really because I hadn't wanted to buy one. Couldn't see a great advantage over whatever it was I had then, the iPhone 5 presumably, and couldn't afford it. But my 5 just died irreparably and by the end of that same day I'd bought a 6. No thinking about it, no enjoying considering any options, it was just what's the current iPhone and how cheaply can I get it? I subsequently had much more fun choosing an iPhone a couple of years later so I've banished the iPhone 6 from my mind. Well, apparently not since you just got all of this out of me, but I thought I had.
For what it’s worth, I had some of your same concerns about the size and weight. I decided to go with the max version all the way back during the 11 Pro Max era. Honestly, I’ve never regretted it. I have larger hands, though I don’t consider them to be abnormally or superhumanly largeand I have no issues using the phone with one hand. I kind of rested on my pinky and my thumb can reach probably at least 85% of the screen, all about the very top left corner, which is rarely an issue. Interestingly, I always found the 12 and 13 minis to be rather endearing devices. I even considered switching to them and they have actually done it. Had it not been for the horrendous battery life when compared to the Pro maxes of the years before.
The battery is the killer feature, I’m starting to think. Except earlier today I was using my iPad on a job - and realised that it was the first time I’d switched it on since I got my Max. I love my iPad and it was the right tool today, but it startled me how useful the iPhone 16 Pro Max has been. And I used to fancy the minis, I thought they were great, but I didn’t appreciate the batteries were poor - I should have done, of course, but it didn’t enter my head. I think now going back from the Max to something like that, I’d be very conscious of it.
I had the iPhone 8 Plus (cuz I didn’t need a new one. It still literally works) and went with pro max. It’s not all that much bigger than 8 plus. The area taken by the camera bump is annoying because my fingers keep touching it and the camera control is absolutely terrible.
The camera bump means I rarely put the phone down on a hard surface -- and I won't put it down face-first either, for fear of the glass. It's as if Apple thinks the phone should be in your hand all the time.
Odd: I saw this yesterday, smiled, commented, and TH-cam seemingly said no, shut up William. At least I saw it again today -- and it made me smile once more.

If Apple don’t give us a new iPad Mini this year, I’m looking to upgrade my iPhone to the 15 or 16 Pro or the regular 16. Thanks for the content.
I so loved my iPhone 15 Pro. I did give it to my wife and use hers - my previous one that I’d also given to her - as the trade-in phone, and picking up her/my iPhone 13 Pro, I wondered if I were making a mistake. It still seemed great. But then I did some work on the iPhone 16 Pro Max and I was back to preferring that. I would like to stop changing my mind, please.
William, no case? No screen protector either? And did you go for the 256GB or the 512? I got the 512 but so far only used 100 so the 250 would’ve done. Thanks.
I went for 256GB. I shoot a lot of videos and need space but storage is so expensive with Apple. I spent about £200 on a Lexar Go SSD that lets me plug 2TB into the phone -- and, crucially, then plug the same drive into my Mac for copying off files.
Note 8 >iPhone 13 mini>16 ProMax Loving it! Already filmed massive amounts in a week of ownership. Absolutely flawless device. Samsung....give me log and ProRes (Without motionCap app) and I'll switch back. Writing on a Galaxy Tab S7+
I think Samsung makes the best Android phones but it’s still Android. Every time I use Android, it still feels unfinished somehow. I know that’s just me, but hardware will never be enough to make me move to a different platform, there has to be software too.
@@WilliamGallagher software update support was the reason I switched. Note 8 had 2 years of support and that was total bs. After I made the switch to the mini, I ended up making the switch on the PC side of things as well. M2 MacBook Pro is a perfect 4k editing rig on the go. PC is now all for gaming 😎 16 ProMax for the ProRes and Log was the smart choice for my needs. Love the S24U as well
Yes. I mean it about having doubts and I do suspect I’m kidding myself about the screen looking better as well as bigger, but the call quality and the battery life, I’m relishing those.
Have you had the Max size before? I've really had some doubts and still occasionally do, but overall I think I'm very happy to have stepped up from the Pro.
Loved the review. Getting the Pro Max but I’m treating it as a mini tablet. I liked the iPad mini but the RAM was such a bottleneck and I don’t necessarily want to take my 13” iPad everywhere
Thank you. I'm much the same: I'll be using my iPad on a job tomorrow but right now I'm about to take a tea break and read a book -- and it will be on my Max.
I’m hoping that rumours about an updated iPad Mini are true. Currently using the 5th Gen, and it’s showing its age. If there’s no new Mini by the New Year, I’m probably going for a Pro Max (15 or 16).
I'm still using my iPhone 14 Pro and am hesitant to buy a new one because I don't see any use for it at the moment. However, my triplets are already queuing up, waiting for me to pass on my iPhone. I think I'll definitely wait until Apple Intelligence is available in German, then I'll reconsider. However, if Apple needs a few more months to resolve the differences with EU legislation and implement AI for the German language, I might just wait for the upcoming 17 series iPhones next year. Greetings from Stuttgart, Thomas.
That made me smile, the image of your triplets crowding around you, trying to touch your iPhone. But how would they divide it between them? I skipped the iPhone 14 Pro and so went from the 13 to the 15 and I think that meant I got more in my update. I like the iPhone 16 Pro Max now, but I think there's a very strong argument to wait for the 17 range.
@@WilliamGallagher Yes, three children (one girl, two boys) makes it difficult, because they all love Apple and want an iPhone. So far, my wife and I have the same model and both hand the phones down to the boys. Our daughter has always had a mind of her own and particularly liked the iPhone SE (because of the colours). She's been using the SE2 for a long time and if Apple offers a new one in spring (SE3?), she'll get one from us as a gift. Currently, the boys are using our previous iPhone 12 Pros, but the battery in both of them is starting to wear out.
Why would I want the surfboard model of an expensive iPhone? I have a non fancy iPad with a Logitech keyboard case/cover that I read, write & watch on. My plan is to replace my iPhoneSE with the home button & lightning port for iPhoneSE4 with smartypants chip & a usb-c next March: less expensive but a big upgrade for me without it becoming a surfboard.
I think the 16-inch MacBook Pro is a surfboard. And when I tried an external case and keyboard on a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, I thought it was a windbreaker. So in comparison, even though I think the iPhone 16 Pro Max is big, it doesn't seem that big. Maybe this is the moment when I've decided that yes, I like it. Hmm.
I am still happy to my iPhone 11 pro max to my daily drive and IOS 18.0 update and still great for me. Iphone now a days only little by little upgrade every year and if you hook their tactics man a lot of money will drain...

Because 90% of human beings on planet earth are right handed.
No. It seemed to me that the only virtue of the Plus was the screen size. Every year lately I go through some tussle over whether I actually need the Pro models, but there's always something.
@@newsnetworkz But it doesn't have the Always On display, which I like enormously for some reason, nor the LiDAR Scanner which I don't use much but which is very handy when I do.
I went from a large iPhone XR (I think it was called that) which I liked a lot, to a smaller iPhone 11 Pro and loved it. That kept me on the Pro size for years - but now I’m back trying a larger one, I like it a lot.
Video quality is garbage in low light compared to 13 in 2021 which was clear. No quality difference between 12, 24, and 48 MP photos. Using Pro Res and Raw will not matter and unnecessary storage use. You would be better off with not upgrading until at least iPhone 17 next year to see if the quality issues are corrected.
I didn't know that about video quality. Everything I've shot so far has looked good to me, but it's all be bright sunlight. (Well, I'm in England, so maybe the word bright is a bit of a stretch.)
I have never been an one-handed user on the iPhone, Not on the 3GS, not on the 5S, not on the 6S Plus and not on the X. And since I know, that the 6S Plus had almost the exact same width,i know, that I can comfortably hold the 16 Plus or 16 Pro Max. I am not a two handed user on smartphones anyways. So to me it comes down to the fact, wether I need the Pro features. A bigger display? Nah, thats mostly just spec hyping. Yes, it is bigger, but you only ever notice that, if you have them side by side. A display capable of running at up to 120 Hz, depending on the app and use? Well.. that‘s a gimmick to me. Yes, its sort of noticeable, but its not like I can really feel the difference. As something that would really bother me. And the always on feature, I am certain, i would never use, since I‘d rather not sacrifice battery life for it. An additional GPU core? Not really. I don‘t play games. So it comes down to pro pro camera features. 4K 120 hz is MAYBE nice to have, similarly to the capability to record in Apple ProRES LOG, but mostly, I will not really care about it, as I don‘t record much video material. But Apple RAW? I take it instantly! I tend to post process a good portion of my photos. And each time I do, having a RAW photo, as opposed to JPEG or god forbid HEIC, is pure bliss. But that is me. And generally iPhone 16 speaking, i got to say I‘m glad you can disable the camera control altogether, similar to not use the always on feature.
Damn shame really all that screen real estate on the iPhone 16 Pro Max coming in at 6.9 inch biggest screen ever on a iPhone and Apple yet to have multi task split screen just like they the last company to add a dedicated camera button I guess any year now the waiting is real.
Funny, I'm not fussed about split screen on the phone. I use it only a little on the 11-inch iPad Pro I have now. Mind you, back when I had a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, I did split screen much more because then it was like having two iPads side by side.
Last year I stood in an Apple Store holding both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and decided the same as you. I don't know what's happened to me in the last 12 months, but this time around I was drawn to the Max and I'm liking it a lot.

Note 8 >iPhone 13 mini>16 ProMax
Loving it!
PC is now all for gaming 😎
16 ProMax for the ProRes and Log was the smart choice for my needs.
Love the S24U as well
Did you enjoy the upgrade from the iPhone 15 pro 😮
Yes. I mean it about having doubts and I do suspect I’m kidding myself about the screen looking better as well as bigger, but the call quality and the battery life, I’m relishing those.
@@WilliamGallagher I wasn’t expecting that
16 pro Max is awesome loving mine
Have you had the Max size before? I've really had some doubts and still occasionally do, but overall I think I'm very happy to have stepped up from the Pro.
A very helpful and informative video thank you sir
Thank you, that's very good of you to say.
@@pug_63 it was just announced! A17 Pro… and that’s it. I’d still have my mini if it had 8GB RAM from the get-go
I'm still using my iPhone 14 Pro and am hesitant to buy a new one because I don't see any use for it at the moment.
@SFAutor Your daughter has style and all three have great parents.
@@WilliamGallagherwhat do you think about going from 15 pro to 16 pro max is it worth it 😮
Why would I want the surfboard model of an expensive iPhone?
I am glad I skipped the 14 range because you're right, it made the 15 seem that much more of an improvement from the 13 I had kept using.
I said for years that my perfect iPhone would be 7 inches. 4K Resolution. And have a permanent back button exactly where the galaxy Phones have their permanent back button, which is on the lower right hand side when you’re looking at the phone. Because 90% of human beings on planet earth are right handed.
Are any of the Galaxy phones that size?
Apple has completely overlooked the sales potential of an iPhone 16 Sub-Par.
I think think they would sell well.
Sub-par? A less than par iPhone? Isn’t that Android? (Ducks)
Lovely vid and nice audio too
Thank you: especially about the audio, I’ve been working on that. Much appreciated.
This was great!
Thank you, that's very good of you to say.
Did you try 16 plus
No. It seemed to me that the only virtue of the Plus was the screen size. Every year lately I go through some tussle over whether I actually need the Pro models, but there's always something.
@@WilliamGallagher The reason why I asked was 16 Plus gets good screen real estate(6.7"), better battery and weighs only 199g.
@@newsnetworkz But it doesn't have the Always On display, which I like enormously for some reason, nor the LiDAR Scanner which I don't use much but which is very handy when I do.
@@WilliamGallagher Gotcha, makes sense
I’m so torn between the sizes I prefer the pro size not the max 😅
I went from a large iPhone XR (I think it was called that) which I liked a lot, to a smaller iPhone 11 Pro and loved it. That kept me on the Pro size for years - but now I’m back trying a larger one, I like it a lot.
@@WilliamGallagher 🤯
@@WilliamGallagher incredible you’re right I think my mind dreams of smaller but will miss the bigger
William Gallagher, tell your wife to try the big phone for one year, and I guarantee you she will never go back to the little phone.
She's looking at me right now, I'll build up to it.
Oh, now, I was with you until said that about the Always On feature. I adore that one. I definitely agree about 120Hz, I can't tell the difference.
To me the perfect phone would be iPhone 16 pro with battery life of Pro Max. I tested both and Max is too big and heavy for my purposes.
Last year I stood in an Apple Store holding both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and decided the same as you. I don't know what's happened to me in the last 12 months, but this time around I was drawn to the Max and I'm liking it a lot.
Size matters.
I hear that a lot.
My 15 pro Max is big enough.
I have this urge to say mine is bigger, so there. But that would be childish of me. And the difference is incredibly tiny, isn't it?
@@WilliamGallagher no it’s very little at all but it’s still bragging rights 😜

@@WilliamGallagher haha, no I meant the sudden white screen. But no stress, I was in a dark room sitting way too close to the screen.

I did not know that only 10% of people are left-handed. That's so interesting.
