I remember being obsessed with mine. been a handheld nut since the OG Gameboy but the PSP was the first handheld that gave me a real console experience on the go instead of feeling like I was playing a dumbed down port
Same. To all of it honestly. I've always been super into handhelds, ever since my original grey DMG Game Boy. And the PSP felt as close to a full console experience as you could get at the time.
I always hear comparisons between the PSP and DS, and, while I did really enjoy the DS I had at the time too, it never felt as neat or 'premium'. The PSP felt like a proper 'companion' to the full Sony consoles at the time. It felt almost on-par with the PS2 (it wasn't quite there, but you know what I mean). The DS, honestly, never felt that advanced, it always felt a tad dated, even back then. It felt more like a slightly boosted N64 more than anything else (not helped by the multiple N64 ports). PSP just felt like "the next big thing", like "this is where handheld gaming is going".
Nowadays, I tend to use my Vita more than my PSP though, just because it can play all my PSP games on a bigger screen.
The PSP was way ahead of it's time. I remember fondly playing GTA Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories on the go.
I remember downloading and watching movies, and tv shows to watch on it during my 12 hour shifts back in 2008-2009. Listened to music through it, chatted via aim and the web browser and sometimes used it to look up directions and information when i was close to a free Wi-Fi spot back in the day.
I eventually hacked mine and got free games. This was a great system to have if you were broke and could follow directions to not brick your console.
I got consistent use out of mine from 2008-2012, when I made enough money to console game again.
The PSP was the first console I bought with my own money and when I went to GAME and asked when the launch date was I found out how much I would get for a paper round worked out exactly how many weeks I would have to work to be able to preorder one, started a paper round, preordered a PSP, saved up and then just about managed to buy a train ticket and Medievil Resurrection as well as my preorder came home, and then took it to school to show off on the first day of term. It was like an expertly planned and executed heist. Such a shame you can't simply buy a new console nowadays.
This takes me back to when I first got a PSP. Ken Kutaragi convinced me to purchase one with a UMD of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man film instead of spending that money on rent, stating that my landlord would be so impressed with the system that he'd never charge me a thing ever again if he got to at least hold it.
A few days later I was taking a nap in a bus shelter after being evicted and I thought I'd kill some time by watching that Spider-Man UMD, but quickly realised that the system wasn't charged and there weren't any electrical outlets anywhere nearby. So I gave up. Suddenly Ken Kutaragi erupted from a nearby dumpster and started to beat me with a metal pole for not having the dedication to try and sacrifice my bodies natural electrolytes to charge the handheld.

Oh wow, this reminds of a time long ago when Ken Kutaragi threatened to kick my cat off a cliff unless I spent all my time playing PSP. A week later I got a knock on the front door while I was playing PSP. I paused the PSP and went to go see who was there. It was Ken. And he proceed to do the splits then uppercut me in the balls for stopping my PSP playing to answer the door.

I got mine off of freecycle Seattle, no charger, and found out after charging it, that it was softhacked. Which meant I could load a ton of PSP and PS1 games on it.
I played so many psp and psone games this way. I never owned a psone, so I got to experience so many classics. Final Fantasy 7-9, Parasite Eve 1-2, Tobal 2, Erhgeiz, Syphon Filter, Tekken series, and practically every psp game that was good.
I still have my PSP. I remember working for GameStop when it was released. Someone brought in their PSP a week later to trade in and that’s the one I bought since I was able to use my employee discount on used items.

The memory card prices is what killed it for me.
It was a great system but was crazy overpriced for memory space.
I had one as well as a Vita. Those two devices are criminally underrated. Unfortunately Sony just has no idea how to manage a handheld device

The PSP was crazy impressive especially for something that was released close to the Nintendo DS’s debut.
The fact that a portable video game console that was released in 2004 could also play movies and music is absolutely mind blowing to me.

I still remember that feeling of being on firmware 1.50 to get iso loaders working on the system. And then GTA liberty city stories came out which patched the exploits for a while. But funnily enough they instead found a separate exploit in GTA where you could downgrade from firmware 2.0 back down to 1.50. so during that time, I would update my firmware to play GTA and then downgrade to play my isos.
Then the psp had a second coming for me when I could manage to install psx games on it via a converter at the time before Sony even released official psx games on it.
There was a point where I actually started making custom umd movies for the system by modifying the iso. I was able to make umd menus and everything for the custom movie
But as we all know now, the psp is fully exploitable now
I remember the first time seeing a PSP it seemed like someone literally came back from the future with their game system

And i'm still using it today.
P.S. The PSP and the PS3 are the reasons why today i use Sony consoles beyond the Nintendo ones.
I need to find a new battery for my PSP, the original one still works, but it doesn't hold the charge like some years ago.

Wow the research, the narration, good editing. I'm surprised this channel doesn't have a million subs. This is the only video I've seen so far so maybe I'm jumping the gun but this is great. I hope it grows fast it deserves it
I picked up my PSP at a tag sale somewhere for just $20 over a decade ago, and it had NES and Genesis emulators and games already on it, and I got a GBA emulator added to it later. Ended up playing it a lot when our home lost power for over a week starting on October 29, 2011 due to an unseasonable winter storm.
(I've since gotten a PS Vita at another tag sale several years ago for just $30, and although I haven't found myself playing games very much on it, it has worked pretty well as a way for me to watch TH-cam videos while away from my computer.)
A fantastic console. I was amazed at the graphics when it arrived in the UK. I am on a mission to collect all EU releases.
There is much collecting associated to this device such as ultra rare releases to press kits, a truly wonderful thing to collect for.
Wipeout games are just superb on the PSP.

I LOVE this channel. Every time I need a nostalgia fix, never fails.
Still remember picking my PSP up day 1 and being floored with the pixel density of the screen. Spiderman 2 was free with it and it looked amazing. Hard to really say it was a failure as they sold over 80m units, more than the 3DS, it just was overshadowed by the juggernaut that was the DS. Still a fantastic system to play and the games have held up super well. Spunky little system.

As a kid, the PSP felt more "mature" in a lot of senses. It had the more violent games like GTA and GoW, it had nicer graphics than the DS, it didn't have any touch screen or motion gimmicks. It was as close to a legit portable console at the time as you could really get. The DS had that more "family friendly" and "kid's toy" vibe goin on. The graphics felt a bit cheaper, it had the Kirbys and Marios, even the console design felt like a chunkier toy designed so kids can't break it, as opposed to the sleek modern electronic device look that the PSP had.
I loved my DS, don't get me wrong, but there was something that just felt way 'cooler' about using a PSP to play Burnout or GTA, versus playing Mario 64 or something on the DS.
someone gave me a psp last year and it has aged fairly well. the screen still looks great and it emulates fairly decent as well. the biggest downfall is the lack of L2 and R2 buttons, when playing ps 1 games you wind up using the joystick to cover those buttons which is weird. The graphics are way better than nintendo ds but the nintendo ds was cutting edge with its touchscreen and ips
I remember as a kid everyone wanting a PSP to do everything but gaming. Everyone I knew in school who owned one had one to watch movies or listen to music or stuff like that.
Yeah, I remember when a rich kid in my school brought his PSP along with FF 7 Advent Children. We were all stunned by how great it looked
Never had a PSP... by that time I never did mobile gaming. Last one I had I think was the Atari Lynx when I was a teenager. I do now have the excellent Retroid Pocket2+, which is the sweet spot for me in terms of power and value for money.
I'm so glad the dual micro SD adapter and CFW exists for PSP. It improves the handheld immensely, but it was pretty good to begin with - just limited by original design.
I grew up with the Original GameBoy when it can out and absolutely was in love with it for over a Decade, but when the PSP came out and had all of the amazing games and exclusives I was instantly in love (alot of PS2/Dreamcast games remade for it)
Still have and use a psp. Real gaming on the go at a really affordable price. Love it!

I still consider the PSP to be the best all-in-one handheld out there! I still use mine quite a bit, I even imported a Japanese Tom & Jerry UMD for mine for when we went to South Africa in 2016! My Mom actually bought me my PSP so I could enjoy games, movies and TV shows during the really long car journeys between home and college! A great device, but I feel it is NOT fair to send a special needs person, who DOES NOT LIKE BEING UPROOTED, to the OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY for college! With my iPhone XS having recently broke and Kunt and The Gang having released their 3rd anti-Boris song, I loaded my Bandcamp purchase of the song onto my PSP! A friend is letting me borrow his iPhone 7 Plus and I plan to get an iPhone 14 Pro as soon as possible after release!
Picked mine up at a midnight launch and my DS was quickly forgotten, sold it a month later. Still have my PSP today.
I loved how the psp could output to the tv, that was an awesome feature.
Another great Documentary. Never lets me down. If i had money to support the channel I would.
The PSP had a lot of fun games, but I do think it highlights what people value more in the handheld market. Graphics aren't as be all, end all there; what matters more than anything is battery life, comfort, and *especially* durability. I lost my first PSP after I accidentally bumped it off a table and it destroyed the screen.
Yikes. That is heartbreaking. Given how much those cost. Would assume they made it durable enough to take a hit. 🤦
I like a lot of things about the PSP, but I don't think they had the right software for a handheld. They always wanted to bring the console experience to a handheld, but the screen just wasn't up to that in size or refresh rate. Simple, bright colors just work better on a handheld.
The fuck are you guys on? PSP are fun as hell and the build quality of the 1000 model is TANK level. The PSP literally put me through puberty early.

A friend of mine got a Japanese import before UK release, seeing that Ridge Racer port running on a handheld was amazing, less fantastic was the loading screens which really killed it as a handheld for me. Didn't stop me from owning nearly every model (still have a Go with CFW) but it was obvious Sony didn't understand the handheld market enough to take the top spot.
I'd say partly that and they weren't going with cartridges for space for movies at the time as they wanted movie/tv series studios on board too not just digital as they weren't too keen on it like they are now. Security and regions are still a thing for them now and was definitely back then.
It was fine enough for games and the movies (the 2 I own since 2021/2022 as never ever saw any prior for some reason, not got any tv shows in UMD) but because it was a media device yeah they had to do something. They weren't going for tapes or another solution it seems. Whatever what suitable for both mediums and their respective formats. That and I assume the Diskman worked with disks so why not the PSP. Shrug. I know they exist I wasn't around when they made them only know through research so no idea how bad or good it was with CDs on the go let alone UMDs and the size/fragile difference.
I agree disk on a handheld isn't great at times, it being close to your face making noise, it failing to load in some cases if you don't handle it, but movies were on them too and no one wants to see or was going to experience live action or animated movies/tv series on a cartridge like GBA Video. I don't know if cartridges or flash memory or otherwise was big enough compared to disks then or if they wanted to put the money in to make their own with enough space either. I mean it also seemed like a Mini Disk idea again for Sony to try in some cases.
I made that clear for a PS4/5 handheld to others not to have disks but they can think what they want Sony and customers were smart enough to learn when the PSP used them to know it was not suitable then and now it should be more clear as cartridges or digital on a console would be fine enough I think for both not a big disk in a tablet sized device that's for sure.
At least we didn't get Laser disks on a portable, eh. Can only imagine that not going well at the time let alone Blu rays in a tablet on the go.
The psp was still fairly rugged feeling and lightweight. It might be impossible to do in the modern age. The psvita by comparison felt extremely fragile, you just know you can't drop it. Personally, it's kind of mandatory for a handheld and it's why I can't really buy into the switch and also why I feel the gba sp is the best handheld ever made and the psp is second
I don't think the PSP failed. Its rival was the original DS. Nowadays nobody likes the DS, only the DS lite onwards. The PSP was and is a very cool gaming system. Atari couldn't manage to put out a decent handheld and I'd argue neither could Sega. So Sony bashing out this stonker of a system that only got better with every revision just shows how great the PSP is.
Bashing one out successfully is no mean feat.
I like and still have a PSP, problems at the time were killer titles not coming out quickly enough and Gran Turismo being such a let down. Movies were not cheap for what they were, memory cards are a hassle, Sony have the perfect recipe for a great handheld, then let minor things here and there spoil it.
Hello Lady Decade had a Psp and really enjoyed playing it. The disc drive broke so bought another one which still works. The games on it are amazing. I especially fond of Wipeout Fusion. The DS was awesome also. Always enjoyed the Poffesor Layton games on there and Mario.

I miss my PSP, but I have my Vita if I want to play PSP games!
For the base PSP model, it didn't fail. For whatever Sony tried to do with PSP console and their online platform in PS3 which Sony still allowed downloads for PSP albeit with so much hassle. That one failed hard. As well as the Frankenstein's monster Xperia phone, the Go and Vita.
Well I owned a psp and a 3ds, the 3d effect is nice and everything and some of the first party games are the best on the market, but the psp has better games in general, the third party games on the psp are great and diverse, for each mario 3d land the psp has like ten vice city histories.
What would have been awesome for music lovers would have been the ability to use Sony's MD in the system. Sadly the UMD's design was slightly different and a MD could not fit inside. I wonder if someone has taken a MD Disc out of its case and placed it in a UMD case as was able to have the PSP read media. EDIT: This answers that question - search for this video " MiniDisc vs. UMD 💽 ¿Puede una PSP reproducir un MiniDisc? ¿Y un MiniDisc leer un UMD? " It's in Spanish, but you can have it translated if you need to.

Even now that original PSP is a very nice looking handheld. Was working retail when it came out and was lucky to play with it for a few minutes when a Sony rep came around to show it off just before it launched in the UK, was a day 1 purchase after playing with it. Shame Sony left the handheld market but with the insane sucess of the Switch and the Steam Deck doing very well now would be a good time to try and give the handheld market another go. But if they do they must not use proprietary memory cards again as this was a massive pain in the ass for the original PSP and Vita and more than likely contributed to its downfall.
I bought my first PSP last year. I always wanted one as a kid but sadly never got because it was too expensive for us.
Now I have a PS4 and a Switch but in the last year I barely used them becausse of the PSP.
It's my favourite device to play GBA and PS1 games. Perfect size, low weight, bigger Dpad and face buttons than the Vita's. Just a great device to this day!

I had Star Wars: The Force Unleashed on PSP. It remains the only PlayStation console I mess with. Otherwise, I'm Team Nintendo all the way. I spent so many hours on that game. Good times.

Got a PSP in 2010 and was probably the best handheld gaming device I've ever played imo even over the 3DS and Vita I got afterwards. (had the games I preferred)
Now that Handheld Gaming PCs are a thing and Emulation has advanced I can relive all that again.
I LOVE the PSP! It's in my top 5 favorite handheld video game consoles of all time list, and I love colle ring games for it!!! I have fond memories of bringing my PSP to school with me in my senior year of high school. My friend (at the time) had a model 1000 Vita, and I thought I was gonna be made fun of for still rocking a PSP, but I wasn't! Games I played daily were: Guilty Gear Judgement, Star Wars Battlefront II, Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles, Dragon Ball Z Shin Budokai, etc. I'll never forget showing my friend (who introduced me to Dragon Ball Z) Dragon Ball Z Shin Budokai running on my PSP, and he blown away with how good it looked on a handheld that he asked me if he could borrow my PSP just to be able to play Shin Budokai!

I know that piracy on PSP was super easy compared to other systems, so game sales suffered while system sales were strong.
The PSP was my best friend when I was a school bus driver during my early years from 2007 - 2012 it was go to device for gaming, music, and watching my downloaded TV shows and movies during my layovers and field trips until I got my first smartphone a Samsung Galaxy S2 in early 2013. Nowadays your smartphone can emulate PSP.
The psp still holds up extremely well to this day especially if you have any homebrew knowledge on it.
I loved the Gameboy as an early teen as well as the Megadrive & Snes. Beyond that i couldn't care less about handhelds. I hated Nintendo having great games on handheld only on DS etc. Luckily now we just have Switch and PC that covers all games. Never again will i accept having handheld only games.
The PSP was one of the first consoles I bought on launch day it was the Spiderman 2 package edition, came with the movie on UMD. Has it really been 18 years? 😱
I love the psp so much, it's one of the few handhelds that were on on the same level as Nintendo and probably my favorite sony product. but yeah it didn't live up to the hype and sony and the third parties took a bath on it due to all the pirating we would do.
Same level nah it was far better than any Nintendo handheld at the time or before it. PSP was ahead of it time everything the PSP did was S tier.
@@johndoughnuts The only thing psp did better was having graphics looking closer to a console. And even that doesnt mean its good. For a handheld its better to have graphics that wont saturate your brain with a small screen.
DS was a million times better. If you wanted to have real fun: DS. If you wanted to play multiplayer: DS. If you wanted to feel safe with your device being durable: DS. If you wanted to watch a movie on a train or plane: PSP.

I'm still playing my old psp. I'm doing a 100% play through of Crisis Core before the Remake comes out.

I bought my PSP here in Ireland on launch day. Awesome hardware but just as it was with the Vita (which I've just dug out from the drawer this week to jailbreak and run roms) Sony's obsession with proprietary media destroyed it. The insane costs of expansion cards and Sony's refusal to listen to the player base's calls for better value expansion doomed the PSP and Vita imho.

Psp's hackability was my favorite part. It's homebrew scene was amazing and the ability to play just about any ps1 game with little to no effort *cheff kiss*

I remember the day I got mine. It was 2005 lol! My father took me to the park and when we got in the car to head home he took me to the game store. Good times! I only played pro Evo soccer 2005 on it as well as fight night and fifa 2006 and 2007. Good times! A great console for its time
The PSP is my favorite handheld (PS Vita is a close second). I have three 1000/1001 models, three 2000/2001 models, and two 3000/30001 models.
I still play them regularly (Especially with the HDMI-Out cable I use with the 2000/2001, 3000/3001 models).
I was blown away with The PSP when it first came out (only complaints were some games had ghosting issues, and the flimsiness of the UMD'S). I've never been so impressed with a handheld since then. The games were nearly PS2 quality (Games like the two God of War games, Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection, Soul Calibur Broken Destiny, Wipeout Pure, Wipeout Pulse, Sega Rally Revo, The Ridge Racer games, and others, were/are equal to PS2 quality imo).
When I bought my second PSP (The White Darth Vader 2000/2001 model) I bought it from a guy who modded it, and it had Capcom CPS1, CPS2, Neo-Geo, and MAME emulators/games on it. That was a dream come true for me at the time! I used to have it clipped to my belt loop in my front pocket at work. I would play it on my lunch breaks, and guys would be looking over my shoulder while I was playing. One of my coworkers was so impressed, that he said: 'I want it.' And he bought the same white Darth Vader model a few weeks/a couple months later and brought it to work and showed it to me.
The PSP has a Great, and Diverse library of Quality games. Watching DVD quality movies on it was an awesome feature! I still watch UMD movies on it (Most recently Ninja Scroll). Being able to play PS1 games on it was another awesome feature!
It was my first experience with seeing/playing such high-quality gaming on a portable device. And, like I mentioned, it was the first system to fulfill a childhood dream of having portable/pocketable arcade-perfect versions of games in my pocket, with the emulators that could be put on it. As well as some of the official UMD releases.
Imo, The PSP did Pioneer like the Walkman did back in '80's (The market is now flooded with portable emulation devices). It was a success, but it should've been way more successful than it was.

My PSP is mostly a 16 bit/PS1 emulator. It's very good and its job and still a sleek piece of kit

For me, I actually imported my PSP from Japan as soon as it was released, long before it was available in the States. Before it was for sale here, I already was emulating NES, SNES, and GENESIS games on my PSP with firmware 1.0. It was awesome. I loved it so much. Today, I still have a PSP 3000 model and still love it, though I have no emulators on it. Still, it had great games and I will never give it up.
If it just had a second analog stick, it would have dominated the industry. I still don’t understand why they couldn’t put it in until the Vita.
I had several friends waiting for the dual analog PSP and when the Go came out they lost interest and just started playing mobile games on smartphones instead.
The only reason I bought a PSP was for Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep & Sonic Rivals 1+2.
The PSP sold almost the same of PS3/360 it not fail at all. Of course the DS was gigant in sells. But the PSP give it a good fight and sold well to a handheld that was not from Nintendo.
Also, the PSP library is amazing until today. It's sad the de Vita flopped and didn't keep the good path of PSP.

I liked the Microvision, Game Gear, Lynx, and PSP
I used to have a PSP back in the day. Now I play those games on my Vita and PPSSPP
I had the psp too because during that time a portable video player, especially with a screen of that size was valuable. Then smartphones happened and even budget ones are powerful emulation machines.

I never owned a PSP, but I remember seeing adverts on TV and stores. The array of quality, content library, so many ideas.
Sony is weird sometimes. They had a great idea. But gave up. Due to cost and losses.
I always wondered why the UMD's were fragile. The format seemed interesting. But yikes those prices for storage was insane.
What bites the most, is so many games were never released worldwide. They even had multi language support. From what I read

The Nintendo DS is actually the very first video game system I've ever played. I've had it since I was 4 or 5 years old and I remember playing New Super Mario Bros DS on it. That game actually sparked my interest in Mario and video games in general. The moment I began playing, I immediately became a Nintendo fan. Also just out of curiosity, if the PSP used cartridges instead of discs, would it have been a commercial success?

i have no idea how the original gba was so popular. i bought one and couldn't see what was going on in any of the games. i tried in every different lighting condition, i tried those stupid lamps that plugged into it, and nothing i tried helped, it was literally unplayable to me. now i can understand why the gba sp would be popular, i got it and loved it. it was amazing finally being able to play all of those great games that i couldn't play before. i mostly played ff tactics advance, golden sun, and that castlevania game whose title i can't think of at the moment.
Man I hacked the crap out of my psp back in the day. I made it so I could play the games from the memory card instead of disc . I did this for my Friends psp’s too. I dont remember ever buying a game. I was probably part of the reason it failed.
I loved my psp I got it when me and my mum who sadly is no longer here when we went to Woolworths to pick it up with medieval great memories
Psp and God of war is the only reason that even after not playing games in 12 years I want to purchase a device like PS5 or more preferably modern version of psp in future and follow all about gaming in you tube 😇👌
Just got mine back up and running. Settling in for some FFT: War of the Lions. That and an eventual replay of P3P.
