    Interesting that you added depth to collision objects rather than extra geometry. I'll try that. It seems that having higher geometry in the soft body objects is far more key than adding it to the collision objects, (which is kept ridiculously simple). Very handy.

    I found a new kind of trouble! Came back to this tutorial after a couple months ago just to review things, play with settings. Instead of a plane to bounce on, I made a cube, and scaled the Z axis to small, something like 0.01 or so. The falling object did not bounce, but simply slumped down into a flat puddle. I cranked up the softbody Bending, and toyed with the Collision's Inner and Outer Thickness settings for the slab. It wasn't until I moved the bottom face of the slab way down, more like the original cube, that it worked. Softbody objects are affected by both the first surface and the next surface beyond of the collision object, the those surfaces are too close together. Adjusting the Inner and Outer Thicknesses may fix it, but better to just not have a surface close beyond the first-strike surface of any collision object.

    Just one question; for the bouncing balls, I always have some gap between the balls when they collide (so they never touch directly, only with a layer of air between them)
    I couldn’t figure out which factor is responsible for it… :’)

  • @DrunkenUFOPilot
    @DrunkenUFOPilot 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Once the Edges settings are cranked up, for things like this ducky or the balls, the self-collision isn't important (usually) so I turn it off. Simulates faster, see the animated render sooner!

    A really weird thing I just found in Blender 3.3 and have no idea on was that - if you put the 1st soft body object above the 2nd one, the 1st SBO will always bounce on the initial position of the 2nd SBO even if the 2nd object already drops down - and this abnormal collision only happens between soft bodies. I noticed that - unlike rigidbody - the pivot of soft body object is always still and never follow the physical movement during the simulation, but is the soft body really supposed to work in that way or did I just set something wrong?

    When I add softbody physics to any simple character, the character's hands, arms and legs disintegrate.
    So physics as a whole does not work.

  • @Gregory_Harshfield

    I am getting some major lag during the rubber duck portion of it. I used the duck I modeled on the later tutorial. Why do you think it is taking so long to run through an animation? I applied all of the modifiers and made sure that I didn't have repeated vectors. What do you think I did wrong? (Plus, I have an RTX 4070.) But, I also pulled the duck from an asset library. Does that play a factor?

    • @RyanKingArt
      @RyanKingArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmm, the more geometry the model has, the slower the simulation will be. So if you applied a sub-surf modifier, it will be more laggy. I don't think using it from an asset library would effect the simulation baking speed at all.

    • @Gregory_Harshfield

      @@RyanKingArt I resaved the original file, which I started before I installed a new video card, and it worked like a charm. But, I tried to work out of the original file I modeled, and I got the same issue. But, when I resaved the same file in another folder, it was flowing like whiskey. I am wondering if the original file's data was tied to the GTX and wasn't configured for the new card? I don't know. But, it works now. Thanks for the response, Ryan. I appreciate it.

      If I understand, you have a 300 frame animation but the physics stops working after 250? If that's the case... look in the Physics tab, unfold the Cache section. There's a Simulation Start and Stop frame number setting. Should be obvious what to do from here.

    Instead of a plane, I made a box for the duckies to fall into, no matter how thick I make it or how many times I extrude the bottom, they still go through, idk what is happening.
    If it's just a simple plane, it works fine, as soon as i make any changes to it, it fails. Any ideas?

      I wonder what Mr. King is using. I'm using an RTX 3060, 16GB RAM and doing well with that. I'd like something newer and faster, but I'm cheap and the 3060 is doing fine for everyday use. If I had to render a long animation, longer than a minute, at 4K I'd probably look for a pay-for render service online.

      I had weird things happen when playing with softbody. A bad idea is to model the thing in detail, use Subdivision Surface, apply it, have a zillion mesh points and then things go haywire. My mesh was visible all nice and proper in frame one, then vanished for frame 2. Solution: low-poly modeling, like for a game asset. In Modifiers tab, be sure Softbody is applied first (top of stack) and have Subdivision, Bevel and other modifiers like those later (below).

    For some reason, if I try to simulate the duck with self collisions on (I made the duck by following your other tutorial) Blender automatically crashes.

    • @RyanKingArt
      @RyanKingArt  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ahh sorry to hear that. Are you using blender 4.0? Sometimes when a new release of blender comes out, there are more bugs, but after more releases, they do bug fixes. you could try using blender 3.6 instead.

    • @stefanosiclari
      @stefanosiclari 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RyanKingArt Actually I'm using Blender 3.6.5.
      The very first time I tried it, using the ball, it worked perfectly. As soon as I went to the duck, every single time I try it (including with other objects) the object disappears after one or two frames.

      Check if your collision object has a high thickness inner and reduce it to maby a centimeter or higher. You can find the setting in collision tab

    heres a tip you should probably use, instead of duplicating or copy pasting a mesh, press Alt D to create an instance of that object, basically what it does is instead of creating extra geometry it uses the geometry of an existing object which does the same thing as duplicating except it is better for performance, i dont know if it works with soft body sims or any kind of physics sim but it probably does and its generally a lot better as your blender will be a lot less laggy. Ducky 3D has a great video covering everything about instances

    • @RyanKingArt
      @RyanKingArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip. Although I don't think that will speed up the soft body sim, because each object still has to be simulated and calculated. And also you can't use the Alt-D, in edit mode. And I've found that the simulation works better when all of the mesh is within the same object.

      @@RyanKingArt Ducky is good people and love his tutorials. But, at the end of the day, nothing is escaping buying an RTX card for Cycles with more RAM and a motherboard with two PCIe slots. Eventually, the serious 3-D artist must submit.

      @RyanKingArt When you apply the physics to the duck instead of bouncing they will phase through the object. Sometimes they will bounce but they heavily clip through the object. The duck hits the surface like a trampoline, sinking in then bouncing out.
