    This is so informative! The rock with the lines as you said is rainbow obsidian, and the one with the flash of color is labradorite. Thanks for doing this series.

      Hi there Up North Adventures With CCC, thank you for the kind words and encouragement. If you mean the rock at 10:17 another commentor said it was Labradorite, and when I looked up some pics they look very similar, although I am no expert, in fact that is one aspect of this hobby I struggle a bit with, sometimes it's hard to go from a picture in a book or internet to what you have in your hand. That's one of the reasons I bought a hardness test kit, I figured that way I may not know it's name but I can get an idea as to whether it will tumble and how well .Thank you for stopping by.

    You figured out the weight discrepancy at the end. It was the type of rock. Huey and Louie each had two pieces of probably fluorite, the green stuff that wore down to small pieces. I don't think Dewey had any fluorite. The blue rock may be sodalite and the rock with the spot that flashed blue was labradorite. The flash is labradorescence. I'd say you were successful. You might need to work on a tighter seal and forget the veins on the inside. Be happy.

      Howdy there The Dude Rolls Rocks, When I loaded the barrels I used the same rocks and the same size or as close as possible, if you go look at Pt. 1 I show the various piles. Also I don't think any of them were fluorite, but I am no expert so may be wrong, I do have some fluorite and they don't look like what I used though so I am not sure. Thank you for the view and the comment.

    • @MrChubbyHubby.
      @MrChubbyHubby.  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey there Dude, after looking things over more I think you and some others were right, those were pieces of green fluorite, I have some rainbow fluorite and I was basing my earlier answer on that, I also goofed in my assumption that since that was a mix sold for tumbling that it was all Mohs 7, opsie, sodalite is not and neither is that fluorite, so we try again.

    This is the first video of yours that I've watched. Very cool PVC barrels, I'm impressed! I wonder if the little green ones that shrunk so much are fluorite, that is a softer stone. The one with the blue chatoyancy is labradorite, my top favorite stone!😍 I have a couple tumblers and I know that they round better in stage 1 & 2 if you have a variety of sizes of your stones or if you add in some ceramic media. The smaller rocks or ceramic media will help round any parts of your rocks that have any dips or any corners. They really look good, especially for your first time plus experimenting. I'm going to find part 1 of this video and watch it now. Thanks for sharing!✌️🤠

    • @MrChubbyHubby.

      Thank you, Kyla Abegglen, I really appreciate you watching. Others have said they thought those were fluorite also, but I have some fluorite and it does not look the same to me, but I am as I say no expert. And if you watch the next video, I do add in ceramic media to make up some volume. We will see at the end if this experiment was a good one or a fail.

    Passed with flying colors! If I could handle the sound I'd love to tumble rocks :) You had found some very nice specimens to tumble so it was extra nice to see the results! I'm binge watching these now so am not sure if you adjusted any of your system, but I was wondering if you looked at rocks of the same type under the scope and took pictures before tumbling, and then compared the rocks after, if differences between how the different methods affected the rocks might be more obvious? You probably considered doing that and I may have missed you mentioning it - I was listening with headphones while doing some chores and went out of range a couple of times - but made it back in time to see the results of the experiment! I'm looking forward to see what you try next :)

    That rock with the schiller iridescence (you called it "chatoyancy" which is the characteristic shimmer of tiger eye) is likely labradorite or some other plagioclase feldspar such as moonstone.
    NOTE: feldspars have a Mohs hardness between 5 and 6, and you have harder silicates in that batch such as the tiger eye and amazonite which have a hardness between 7 and 8.

    Just finished the video. Noticed that the 4 vane had used the grit and the no vane had some grit left. Might be a little too violent with the vanes and therefore shattering the brittle media instead of slowly abrading the rocks with a more gentle tumble.

      Hello Scott Owens 1535 and I am sorry I missed this for so long. You could be right about the vanes, since I got some real barrels I have kind of left these on the back burner, I had some leaking issues as well. The large sized ones seemed to work well, although being a Noob I underfilled the barrels and kind of messed up a batch, although again that was me. So if you are going to try this, maybe go look at my XL DIY barrel videos.

    the tumbling is supposed to represent what mother does in rivers and creeks.... which you need various sizes of stones to get a smooth tumble. the first two staged grit smooths the stone. the last two stages works the polish on the stone. which is why the makers of the barrels made them out of rubber to keep A: a smooth action with your tumbling. B: to keep the barrel from leaking. which is why they recommend filling your barrel 3/4's full

    Just turned on a 6×6 star/diamond tumbler that had rocks left in half the double ended barrel for 5 years. I opened it and the bottom 2 inches was concrete with embedded Rock's but it had held its water so after cleaning the seal and tumbling for a half hour it looked fine upon opening.
    You gotta kinda think it's concrete Allright but there's no lime or other binders and even if there was your beating rocks into it that are much harder and it goes away quickly.

I bought that one from Pro/Stock metal detectors in Plainwell MI, I think he has an ebay store, otherwise Garrett Metal Detector makes them, or try amazon. Hope this helps although I should tell you I have been having some issues with grit getting stuck on the cross grid under the screen, if you have a outdoor hose to rinse with that might not be a problem, but just pouring water like I do does not seems to rinse it out well.
