Hi there City Rockhounding, thank you so much for the words of encouragement, so far so good, although all three are showing signs of some slight leaking with stage 3 going in them, so we will see. That was a concern with this, the pvc pipe or cap getting enough wear with use.

Love how they are coming along…. Maybe the grit stuck because there was an evacuation blast in the atmospheric area that had been sent out by the time you went down to the park. If that happens again just make sure the squirrel doesn’t eat the frog skin before the moon shines through the windows and you should be good!!

Hello HCH... Thanks for sharing your adventures tumbling gems. Labradorite is my favorite and I carry a beautiful one in my pocket everyday. Btw that Morning Dove that was in my video has managed to fit himself/herself on the feeder in my backyard and was chowing down today. The feeder is designed for finches, chickadees and smaller birds not even Robins barely fit so it was hysterical watchin it today! Can't wait to see the final results and the see the finished polished stones you have been working on! L&L 2U HCH

I can pretty well guarantee there will be an order placed for some soon, that and sodalite and celestine are some of my favorites. Cool that your dove found a way to get some seed, they are really pretty birds I think, that and the head bob as they walk is funny. L&L to you as well BMB.
It is a good idea to do a clean run in between each grit stage. Use 1 tablespoon of Borax per 1 pound of rock, tumble for 20 minutes up to 1 hour clean well with water then do the next stage of grit.
Rob from 'Michigan Rocks' TH-cam videos has some really good informational videos of rock tumbling. Rob has an explanation for the build-up in your barrel.
Hi there Elaine Bates, thank you for your comment and for stopping by. I now do what my friend Angie Nicholas www.youtube.com/@craftyasNZer/videos calls a bubble bath, which is a run in borax, I usually do mine overnight, then on to the next stage, we learn as we go, or at least I try to.
I have been following him for years, I do need to back and rewatch some of his videos though. I think most of that was caused by too few rocks and low water levels, these barrels failed sadly, they started to leak and got worse as the steps progressed. I had trouble with the larger barrels too, but that was me being dumb! I should have built the small barrels with schedule 35 also, but I had the 4 inch pipe on hand, so here we are. I have since been able to but real barrels and have learned a little bit.

Man HCH nice setup. Great project. Soon you will have several tumblers going with multiple barrels. I don't even know how many barrels and tumblers I have around here anymore. Sad huh. lol You asked several questions about your setup. Oiling your pillow blocks. Tumblers run fairly slow as you know, but the shaft turns a lot to make the barrel turn 1 revolution. The oilers are like small reservoirs and will hold a little oil. You should be able to lift the cap and see some oil, if not add a couple of drops until you see some. You really cannot over oil those bearings, as the oil will leak out over time.
Your rocks are coming along quite nicely. They won't get much smaller from now on. But now scrupulous cleaning is very important in your barrels. Just one piece of larger grit in the mix will leave scratches. Several can leave a lot. You need to look at the stones dry, wet they will always look beautiful. If you can have enough barrels that way you can dedicate a set for each girt size so all you have to do to the stones and any other media is to scrupulously clean them. Then put into the next step barrels. When you get into the pre-polish and polish stages is really when dedicated barrels are a must. Keep the grit out of those. However, there are many people who use a single barrel and just clean the wholly heck out of it before the polishing step.
The polishing step is the most critical, this is where that piece of grit in the mix can be the most frustrating. Use plastic pellets to buffer the rocks from hitting each other during polishing and Ivory Flakes, just a touch, at the end of the polishing and during the washing stage. Which is like a 1-day washing after you have opened, washed the polish and pellets off really well, then put the rocks and pellets back in with clean water and the Ivory flakes soap for a day. You can add it during the polishing too if you like. If you can afford to make them, having dedicated barrels for the polish stage can save a lot of headaches. Also if you have enough plastic pellets, after the polishing is completed instead of using the pellets you used in polishing, dedicate pellets that can be used in the wash stage only.
I thought there was a question about barrel speed. these are rough. Many users have their own best speeds they use. 4" barrel 50 to 60 rpm, 6" 30 to 50 rpm depending on the stage. 50 for fasting grinding, 30 for polishing, 12" barrel 20 rpm.
HCH, this is a very cool project. You got me all excited to get my hind end out into the garage and build my drive for my large barrels. Just wish I could get out there. argh! Can't wait until the next video.

From what I have seen on the tumbling the rotary is very good for,the first stage after that your money and time,ahead to,get a vibratory tumbler less grit less time better result just my observation,I,like you am,piecing together home,aid stuff for a flat,lap and tumbler barrels I do have a vibratory tumbler but have only had some,sandblasting,sand to start,with I,need to,get the appropriate sand to go,ahead thanx I think your pvc barrells are very well made and thought out good job your rocks,are looking,excellent

I think the vibratory tumblers are great, they are just too noisy for my situation, at some point I will look into a sound proof cabinet, but for now I need to keep rolling, LOL. And an update on the small sized pvc barrels, they failed, was having bad leaking issues, not giving up but now have three lortone 3lbs barrels, so stay tuned for more rocks soon.

Hey, bet I know why you had that layer of stuck on gunk in the flat ended barrel. It was the one you put up against the plywood that protects the pullies and belt. Maybe it was rubbing on that plywood a bit, creating some heat which caused the buildup?

the reason they tell to use used ceramic media on your polish stages... is because you'll scratch your polished rocks and you won't get desired results

No,sae 20 is,not appropriate but it is good,enough you would br better off with something thicker and it will only need filled half way as long as it is around half,full no,oil,is needed to be added I dint know,what those flip caps,are,called flip cap seams to,me,to,be a very accurate and appropriate description
