I get paid very little (I'm only a part-timer while in college), so I was afraid I'd regret shelling out $400 for a Steam Deck, but I've been loving it! It's so much fun to play games from the comfort of my bed, especially since my laptop is too crappy to play games.

Prey is an absolute modern classic, you should probably focus on that first because it's absolutely worth it, and carries on the System Shock style of gameplay.
It's really weird as a longtime Desktop Linux user, as when you guys and gals all talk about gaming on the Deck, I have to remind myself, 'hey, this applies to me too!' So right now I'm catching up on a fifteen year gaming backlog.

  • @cptncutleg

I've had my deck since it was first released (well, 3 months after, when it arrived).
I've got an SD storage device with a ton of USB adaptors, and a dock with a replaceable M.2 SSD.
I carry those in a Jsaux carrying case, along with a spare power block, HDMI cable. In my bag, I have a portable screen, 11 controllers (including a wii-mote).
I take these to college, and occasionally even get to pull them out for work.
I carry a mouse and keyboard and essentially treat it like a more playable laptop.
It is for work and play.
What I love the most about it is that it can be played ANYWHERE. On the bus, in the office, in bed, on the toilet...
It's like the Gameboy I played as a kid, but playing PS1, PS2, GBA, romhacks and mods ON TOP OF brand new games!
    I've been playing Helldivers 2 and it's a BLAST!

Steam Deck is a gaming machine with almost no friction. Playing games on PC sometimes feel like a ritual. You have to sit at that chair that never feels entirely comfortable, boot up the PC, boot up the game, watch loading screen. It may not be much effort, but sometimes you don't feel like going through all that just to play a simple indie game. With Steam Deck, you just push a button and start playing, right from where you left off last time.

  • @ThePatman1980

I think the Steam Deck is the greatest gaming device 🐐 I’ve ever purchased in my entire life and I’ve owned like 20+ different home consoles mixed with handhelds before.
Steam Deck is not my personal favorite, but it’s the greatest gaming device I’ve ever bought. I believe in time, it can be my favorite. I’ve owned the Vita for nearly 7 years and I don’t ever recall gaming on it much as my Steam Deck during the last 12 days I’ve owned it. Same applies to my Switch Lite.
I bring my Steam Deck with me all the time. It’s usually placed in the back of my car and when I have downtime since I’m a delivery driver, I’ll play it. And I don’t just play like 10-15 minutes spurts. I’m talking about using the entire battery life. That’s usually about 3 hours if all my games are set to 30 fps.
Understand that I haven’t really gamed much since the mid 00s. I became more of a casual gamer. I missed out on the PS3 and Xbox 360 during their heyday. During Gen 6, I was working and dated someone. Didn’t have much time to game from 2003-2006. Then when I got a PS4 slim in May 2017, I had games for it but I mostly used it for Netflix and watching videos from an external hard drive.
It wasn’t until I bought a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 did I get back into emulation after my modded first gen iPod touch and PSP phat ran ROMs from 2008-2010. I discovered by Sept 2021 that PSP and Dreamcast emulation became excellent and GameCube and PS2 improved immensely as long as I had a powerful chip like the maligned Snapdragon 888.
Steam Deck is basically taking my PS4 everywhere with me. I know it’s probably closer to an Xbox One but you can still play God of War (2018), Uncharted 4, Spider-Man, and The Last of Us on it. You can play Metal Gear Solid 5 and the FF7 Remake. Each time I turn it off after a gaming session, I tell myself how awesome it is.
Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t wait to open your presents on Christmas? That’s the same feeling I get when playing my Steam Deck. It’s a godsend to middle aged guys like me (Xennial) and new daddies who want to play a quick game of GTA5 while trying to put the baby to sleep.
I don’t plan to own a lot of games for my Steam Deck. I notice when I bombard any handheld with so many games, I tend to play less of it. It’s because there are so many options. My ADHD will prevent me from finishing a game because I’ll keep changing the game I want to play. That’s why I uninstalled EmuDeck. If I’m going to do that, I’d rather do that on my Flip3 or get an Odin 2.
I’ll use my iPhone SE 2022 and Vita for mostly indies. I’ll use my Switch for Nintendo exclusives. Only AAA titles released during the last 15 years will be on my Steam Deck and it’s usually an IP I’m familiar with like Final Fantasy, Uncharted, God of War, and Metal Gear Solid. I’m not familiar with Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Starfield. I’m not even into the GTA but I’m hearing GTA6 will save this gen.
I know the Steam Deck isn’t perfect. Compared to a ROG Ally and Legion Go with the Z1 Extreme, it’s not as powerful as those two. Then sometimes the games won’t launch because those games were originally developed to work on Windows. But I love mines! It’s so nice to game on it and without weaker graphics that the Switch will have. I don’t believe the Switch 2 will be that much more powerful than it when it arrives in 2025.
Steam Deck is surprisingly comfortable to game on. Inexpensive. Easy to repair. Great software and community support. I think Steam Deck will reign supreme until the Deck 2 comes out. It’s become my PlayStation for PC games since Sony isn’t part of the handheld wars anymore and the PS Portal doesn’t count as a handheld.
I do think the Deck is expendable. Once another new form factor or the successor arrives, there is no point keeping your old Deck. No worries of backwards compatibility. Same applies to the Switch if the successor is backwards compatible. It’s not like the Vita which never had a successor. So you never really get sentimentally attached because a newer one will completely replace the older one.
Let’s say a Steam Deck Lite comes out, I’d sell my current one without hesitation. I can praise my current one now as I’m still in my honeymoon phase with it, but I know I can never get emotionally attached because it’s easily replaceable. I may sell my LCD one once the used OLEDs go down to $350. Sell my LCD for $250 and add another $100 to get the OLED. But it most likely happens when Deck 2 is out.
Rather have beefier newer hardware than a more comfortable footprint but still has the same old chip. Steam Deck is already pretty comfortable as is.

I can't play Tekken 8 on it but I play that on the deck almost flawlessly when my internet connection is stable. The device has just been a godsend in my life, and have tried many games I thought I would never get to, with the advantage of being able to sit in bed or on the couch. I am a pretty big Switch fan too, but the deck fumes have me hooked. I had the option of buying a new pc or the deck and I chose the deck, really not disappointed and I don't regret it a bit. I have that same Finn action figure XD.

The Deck was the best purchase ever. I can Emulate everything up to xbox 360 and even Switch. I can download all the roms for free, directly on the Steam Deck. No need to download on pc and then transfer, since the Deck is a pc. I can download torrents, i install quacked Pc games and add them to Steam. Its a one time purchase and you get so much out of it.

I enjoyed playing the Walking Dead Telltale games, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and many others. I grew up on PC gaming before transitioning to consoles as well. The Steam Deck has brought PC gaming back to my #1 platform. Also, Emudeck is phenomenal for playing those 6th and 7th Generation games as well as the true retro games.

I think the main reason I haven't bought this near perfect machine is that it would make my very imperfect, but very nostalgic retroid pocket 2+ superfluous (whatever that means). I don't want this thing to take over, cause it'll outshine the pocket in every respect (except maybe the 4:3 screen ratrio and overall gameboy aesthetic). But it's very tempting cause it is just so dang good.

I can confirm that Prey (2017) is basically a masterpiece. I've played a lot a lot of games and I'm quite critical, but this one I find is very underrated and it was really strange that reviewers back in 2017 gave it a "good but not great or not anything special" type of rating. The original Prey from 2006 was also a great game (and very different than the 2017 one), but bizarrely they've completely removed it from stores online - you just can't find it anywhere.
And this video nails why our Steam Decks are so awesome. My massive Steam libraries waiting for me, mostly courtesy of Humble Bundle's monthly subscription haha, with so many cool indies to try out.

Rg351p and powkiddy rgb10 pro, if you can find them cheap and in good condition or new. Screen (480x320) with 2x integer scaling for gba, but not good for others.
Since you already have a rp3+, I assume you want a dedicated device for some reason, so any of the cheaper widescreen device would work decently too, old ones such as the rg503 or newer one (but the same rk3566 soc) like the rgb 10 max 3 (non pro), or the x55 as recommended above.
